Named inJeffrey Epstein’s will of August 8, 2019, as successor Executor5
Correspondence with EpsteinAt least October 2009 – April 2019678910

Boris Nikolic is a physician and venture capital investor who was science adviser to Bill Gates at Gates’s private office, bgC3, from about 2010 until the end of 2013, and who co-founded the Seattle life-sciences firm Biomatics Capital Partners in 2015.2341 Emails released by the Justice Department under the Epstein Files Transparency Act record two-way correspondence between Nikolic and Jeffrey Epstein from at least October 2009 to April 2019; the earliest two-way exchanges found, from October 29 and November 8, 2009, are themselves replies, so the correspondence predates even them.678910 Asked to characterize Nikolic’s relationship with Epstein after being told by the interviewer that Nikolic had introduced him, Gates told the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on June 10, 2026 that Nikolic “had met him before I had” and “was kind of organizing the visits that took place,” and that he had not known until the January 2026 release that Nikolic “had quite an extensive relationship with Mr. Epstein.”11 Gates said his first dinner with Epstein, in January 2011, came about because Nikolic, “who worked for me, said that since I was out in New York I might be interested in having a dinner with him.”12 During Nikolic’s departure from Gates’s office in 2013, Epstein drafted correspondence in Nikolic’s voice addressed to Gates and, on Nikolic’s account to Gates, was involved in the exit discussion.13141516 Epstein’s will, executed on August 8, 2019, two days before his death, named Nikolic as successor Executor if Darren K. Indyke and Richard D. Kahn did not serve.5 The New York Post reported on August 20, 2019, quoting a statement he gave Bloomberg, that he had not been consulted and would not act; he told Fortune in March 2026 that “Epstein was a master manipulator, and I deeply regret associating with him.”1718 Fortune noted that he has not been charged with wrongdoing.18

Career

A profile of Nikolic in Biomatics Capital’s fundraising deck, as produced in the released files, lists his education as an MD from the University of Zagreb and a postdoctoral position at Harvard, his experience as “Chief Advisor for Science and Technology to Bill Gates” and “Faculty at Harvard Medical School,” and his notable transactions as Editas, Foundation Medicine and “Shrodinger” [sic].1 Gates told the Oversight Committee that Nikolic “worked at the Gates Foundation on the diagnostic strategy for a period, then he left the Gates Foundation and came to work in my private office, which was one time called bgC3,” where “I think his title was science adviser, from something like 2010 until … the end of 2013.”2

On February 5, 2014 Nikolic forwarded Epstein a biography that Larry Cohen of Gates’s private office had cleared, writing “Larry checked with all teams and I got approval for what I did – below.”3 The approved text reads: “Most recently, Dr. Boris Nikolic served as Chief Advisor for Science and Technology to Bill Gates at bgC3 (the private office of Bill Gates) and at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation (BMGF). Boris is now focused full time on the DST healthcare fund.”3 It records that at the foundation he “co-managed BMGF’s $1.5 billion strategic investment pool” and led its biotechnology investments, and that on the for-profit side he led investments in Foundation Medicine, Research Gate, Schrodinger and Nimbus.3

Correspondence with Epstein

The earliest two-way exchange quoted in full here runs over February 15 and 16, 2010: Epstein asked “where are you?” and Nikolic replied that he was in Toronto after a board meeting and that “Nyc was great. Few shows.”8 (The release also carries direct correspondence between them from October and November 2009, discussed above.) On February 10, 2013 Nikolic wrote to Epstein under the subject “pics”: “Please send me few pics of your island – both the island and the house. / Include also a picture of two of hot girls (preferably nude or semi nude) at the island ;)”.19 Bloomberg reported the content of this email on March 27, 2026; Nikolic’s statement to Fortune that “Epstein was a master manipulator, and I deeply regret associating with him” was published on March 10, 2026, seventeen days earlier, and was not a response to it.1820

On July 21, 2013 Nikolic wrote, “Yes. I know too many people at this party. It is fun but my mood is not there. Tmr morning I am going to Berlin. Will call you from there. How are you?”21

On August 12, 2013 Epstein asked Nikolic about coordinating “re bills dinner” and who “woudl be good for you to be there”; Nikolic replied: “Leave it to me. / Pls lets think whom to have. / Lets try two different mtgs. / Can we get David gaffen. Bill asked me to organize an additional mtg w him as well”22. The name is spelled “gaffen” on the page image; this email does not identify the person or the meetings further, though the name recurs elsewhere in the release in material not drawn on here.22

Gates and Epstein

Lesley Groff’s schedule for Epstein circulated on the evening of Monday, January 31, 2011 lists “7:30 DINNER WITH BILL GATES AND BORIS NIKOLIC” that night and, for the following evening, “8:00 Dinner w/Bill Gates, Boris Nikolic and Peter Mandelson.”23 Shown a similar email referring to dinners on both nights, Gates told the Committee he did not recall meeting Epstein on two consecutive nights in January and that, to his knowledge, the reference to both nights was inaccurate; he said the January 31 dinner was attended only by himself, Nikolic and Epstein.24 Gates also told the Committee that Nikolic “was kind of organizing the visits that took place.”11

Asked whether he had come to believe that Nikolic had conspired with Epstein before that first dinner to draw him in, Gates answered: “I don’t believe that happened,” and “No, I don’t think Dr. Nikolic was part of the broad set of things that you described.”25

Departure from Gates’s private office, 2013

Gates told the Committee that Nikolic had decided to move into venture capital, that Gates had extended his stay by authorising him to make up to three investments on their mutual behalf, and that the timing of his exit was “somewhat accelerated” after Gates told his then wife that Nikolic was aware of affairs Gates had had.226

On May 12, 2013 Nikolic forwarded Epstein an email from Gates on the subject “Compensation,” adding: “I need your help in thinking through. Will call you when I land 7:30pm PST (10:30EST).”27

On June 16, 2013 Epstein sent Nikolic a draft statement written in the first person and addressed to Gates. The Committee entered the email as its first exhibit and read the draft into the record; it includes the lines “I have asked Jeffrey to oversee and negotiate for me and have given him power of attorney to act on my behalf,” and “He has agreed to act as my financial and legal representative.”1328 Nikolic replied ten minutes later: “this is great. My only worry is whether I should send him now or tell him when I see him on Monday,” and asked Epstein to “hold this for 8 days.”1329 Gates told the Committee he had never received anything of the kind and had not seen the exchange before the Justice Department released it, but that “Eventually, Dr. Nikolic did communicate to me that he was involving Epstein in the discussion of … Dr. Nikolic’s exit.”282916

On July 4, 2013 Epstein sent Nikolic a numbered list of ten points on the negotiation. Three of them set the terms of the departure: that severance was “a bad idea. too many quesitons, cannot resign and get three years makes no sense”; that “moving in order to get compensated , is a good story”; and that “you will agree to resign as of Jan 1, announcment on sept 1.” Two further points concerned reputational exposure, and one offered to lend him the money to buy a holding in Foundation Medicine, noting that “there might be restrictions on selling his shares or even transfereing ownership.”30

Epstein also wrote drafts in Nikolic’s voice. On July 18, 2013 he emailed his own address a resignation letter in that voice, containing allegations about Gates’s private conduct and about things the writer said he had been asked to do; a second, longer version followed the same day.1431 On August 10, 2013 he sent Nikolic a short draft in the same voice, beginning “Dear Bill, It is with a great deal of mixed emotion, that i write to you to tell you that I have decided that i should transition to the private sector.”15 Gates told the Committee that “none of those messages were ever sent to me,” that he had never had a sexually transmitted infection (“I never had an STD”), that he had never asked Nikolic to do anything illegal, and that Nikolic had never assisted him in acquiring drugs.323334 Nikolic told Fortune in March 2026: “Regarding my separation from BgC3, Epstein inserted himself as a mediator and then used lies to pursue his own agenda,” adding that he realised this as his transition was completed and continued without Epstein’s involvement or investment.18

The released files include settlement instruments between Gates and Nikolic. A letter agreement dated September 3, 2013, headed “CONFIDENTIAL DRAFT FOR PURPOSES OF SETTLEMENT DISCUSSIONS ONLY,” records the purchase by Gates of Nikolic’s interest in a partnership formed on April 1, 2013 under which the two “discussed potential investment in a range up to $100 Million in certain investments discovered and researched by Dr. Nikolic”; it states that “Only two of such investments, totaling Twenty Million Dollars … were ever made.”3536 A second draft, headed “Letter of Agreement Regarding Investment in the Life Science Fund,” provides for Gates to purchase a “$10 Million to $20 Million interest” in a fund and identifies the two earlier investments as Foundation Medicine, Inc. and ResearchGate GmbH.37 Gates told the Committee that Nikolic “ended up making two investments on our mutual behalf” and that the terms for paying him his share, and the termination agreement, “was all known before he engaged Epstein in the exit” discussion.16

The DST fund, 2014

The biography Nikolic circulated in February 2014 described him as “focused full time on the DST healthcare fund,” the venture vehicle associated with the investor Yuri Milner.3 Epstein asked to see the fund’s offering document and commented on it. On the morning of April 6, 2014 he wrote, “plase send me last ppm”; Nikolic replied that afternoon attaching “a last draft of PPM (version 25 or 26th)” and noting that the draft did not include Milner on the investment committee but that “He is now added back in.” Epstein answered the same evening: “the ppm is troubling … I could/ would not put any of my clients in. … so why not try yourself. the numbers don’t work for you.”38

On March 28, 2014 Nikolic wrote that he was “very much confused and frustrated with time passing,” that he had been told a memorandum was only a draft “that they wanted to get some input from Yuri first,” that he had pressed the point on a call the previous night, and that “I also sent a message to Yuri asking for a resolution asap as you suggested. … What should I do next?”39 On April 14 Epstein wrote, “No more. I don’t understand / No more I’m disappointed Be prepared to stay up late tonite”; the next morning Nikolic replied, “Will call you in 3-4h. Badly slept. Not well. All was staged. Caught him in few lies. Yuri called off deal on Saturday. I canceled my flight to Seattle.”4041

On April 16 Epstein asked, “we have to know what yuri will tell people really, not what he says to you.////// was there some investemnet that he was thinking of making with you that woudl cause him to keep you on hold for 4 months.”42 At 5:51 pm on April 19 Epstein wrote a message whose addressee is redacted in the production and whose body opens with the word “yuri”. It states that “I relied on your word, Bill relied on your word and larry bills chief of staff, confirmed your commitement to move forward only two weeks ago,” and proposes that “for the next two year s I could use DST as a back office” and that the addressee “be a special limted partner. being charged no fees.”43 Nikolic’s reply, printed with that message in the same produced document, was sent to Epstein at 11:08 pm the same evening and opens by saying it was sent: “sent it. / We will se shortly. / I can’t thank you. / Ifeel so horrible for dragging YOU FOR SO LONG into my neverending problems.”43

At 2:38 am on April 20, 2014 Nikolic forwarded Epstein a thread under the subject “FW: Time for a quick call?” with the note: “Yuri contacted Larry to talk. / I think that email I sent made him think. / Unfortunately I do not feel that the outcome will be good.”44 The forwarded messages beneath identify the parties: an email from Yuri Milner to Larry Cohen sent at 3:01 pm on April 19, and Cohen’s forward of it to Nikolic at 10:29 pm the same day with the line “I can tell him I’ll be back Monday (?)”.44

Biomatics Capital, 2015–2016

On March 14, 2015 Nikolic reported the terms of his separation to Epstein and added: “Sadly he insists of me not using Biosys name - so I changed name Biomatics, registered it as Biomatics Capital Parners, and Biomatics Capital Partnership and am moving forward.”4 He sent Epstein the firm’s pitch deck on May 24, 2016, and again on August 7, 2016, writing: “I am on a boat around Naxos so my connectivity is not the best. / I sent you the slide deck before - but here is most up to date deck. / It would be great if you could help me bring additional 10-20MM.”4546 The deck describes a “$150-200mm venture fund investing at the intersection of healthcare and technology” and lists among the firm’s advantages “Global investors as LPs, including Bill Gates.”1

Later contact, 2017–2019

Epstein’s office scheduled appointments with Nikolic at Epstein’s Manhattan house on January 30, 2017 and on the morning of April 20, 2017.4748 The correspondence continues into 2019. On April 6, 2019 Epstein wrote, “can you call me , id like the best real estate guy in s.fl”; shortly after midnight the next day Nikolic emailed an introduction to a friend of his who headed a division of a national brokerage and specialised in high-end property.910

Epstein’s will

Epstein executed a will on August 8, 2019 in New York, two days before his death on August 10; Erika A. Kellerhals, of the estate’s Virgin Islands counsel Kellerhals Ferguson Kroblin PLLC, swore that she did not know of any other will or codicil and that she had received it from Epstein himself.5 Article THIRD provides: “I appoint DARREN K. INDYKE and RICHARD D. KAHN to serve as the Executors of this Will. If any one or more of my Executors fails to qualify, is unable or unwilling to serve or ceases to act, I appoint BORIS NIKOLIC, as successor Executor.”5 The same Article’s next sentence provides for that contingency in turn: “If any successor Executor fails to qualify, is unable or unwilling to serve or ceases to act, I authorize the last acting Executor to designate his or her successor. Such designation shall be made by written instrument delivered to such designated successor Executor.”5 The will directs that each Executor be paid $250,000 “as compensation to each Executor for serving as Executor hereunder,” payable “upon the completion of probate,” leaves the residue to the trustees of The 1953 Trust, and revokes all prior wills and Codicils.5 Indyke and Kahn filed it for probate in the Superior Court of the Virgin Islands and each swore an oath of willingness to serve.5

Earlier wills named other people in that position. A will executed in June 2017 appointed Indyke, Kahn and Terje Rød-Larsen as Executors and named Eva Andersson Dubin, then Kathryn Ruemmler, then Stephen Hanson as successors; that copy is marked “REVOKED.”49 Wills executed on May 8, 2018 and January 18, 2019 each appointed Indyke and Kahn with Ruemmler as successor Executor.5051

A compilation of press clippings circulated within the Southern District of New York on August 20, 2019 preserves the New York Post’s report of the same day, “Ex-Bill Gates adviser ‘shocked’ to be named one of Jeffrey Epstein’s executors,” which quoted Nikolic’s statement to Bloomberg: “I was not consulted in these matters and I have no intent to fulfill these duties, whatsoever.”17 Asked about the designation, Gates told the Oversight Committee that he had seen it only in press reports, had no firsthand knowledge of it, and that it surprised him “a lot.”11

An FBI confidential human source reporting document, form FD-1023, dated November 23, 2021 and filed from the San Francisco field office, records a source’s report that Nikolic, described as managing director of “bng0” and Biomatics Capital with an MD from Zagreb Medical School, was interested in investing in a United States artificial-intelligence company that was seeking funding from DARPA and other government sources, and notes that “Nikolic was designated a executor of Jeffrey Epstein’s estate.”52 The document records no allegation of wrongdoing by Nikolic.52
