Ehud Barak (born Ehud Brog, February 12, 1942) is an Israeli former general and politician who was Chief of General Staff of the Israel Defense Forces from 1991 to 1995, Prime Minister of Israel from 1999 to 2001 and Minister of Defense from 2007 to 2013.1 Documents released by the Department of Justice record correspondence between Barak and Jeffrey Epstein from at least 2013 to 2019, meetings and dinners in New York arranged through Epstein’s office, an arrangement in December 2014 to bring Barak to Epstein’s Virgin Islands island, a charter flight booked on Epstein’s account in September 2015, and a sequence of business dealings beginning with a $1,000,000 payment in March 2015 from Epstein’s Southern Trust Company, under the reference “Reporty Investment,” to Ergo Ltd., a company Epstein’s correspondence describes as “solely owned by EB.”4563 Reporty Homeland Security was later renamed Carbyne; Barak signed himself its “chairman and leading investor” in a January 2019 email to a Qatari contact copied to Epstein.7 Barak has spoken publicly about the relationship; the Jerusalem Post reported on February 12, 2026 that he apologised for having met Epstein and said the documents would show “no crime, no criminal act, nothing improper.”8

Correspondence and meetings, 2013–2017

Epstein’s office corresponded about Barak’s New York visits with a contact recorded in its address book as “Barak & Associates, L.L.C.”2 On January 13, 2015, Epstein’s assistant Lesley Groff told household staff that “Ehud Barak will come see JE on Thursday at 10:30am.”9 On April 26, 2016 Groff wrote to Barak directly, copying Barak & Associates: “Hello Ehud…Jeffrey is available to speak …we have tried your cell a few times but it goes to voicemail.”2

Barak wrote to Epstein on May 27, 2014: “Jeff Hi / We will be in NY from June 1-June 7. / Looking forward to see you. Let me know if you have some idea re further meetings.”10 Epstein asked “yes what time on the 1st ? dinner?”; Barak replied “June 1st 5am. Dinner OK,” and Epstein answered, “Hopefully PM not AM I am not that anxious.”10 In a thread dated May 1–2, 2014 Epstein asked Barak whether he was “flying directly to wash or will you be in new york on the 7th 8th”; Barak replied, “Jeff Hi / Directly to Wash DC. / I’ll be in NY April 9th afternoon. And then April 17-18,” and Epstein wrote back, “ok, see you on the 18th. send terje the paragraph for mongolia today,” a reference to Terje Rød-Larsen.11 On April 14, 2014 Epstein sent Barak a one-line message reading “happy psover.”12

A schedule for April 21–24, 2013 carries the reminder “Ehud Barak in NY” and, for Tuesday April 23, a “7:30pm Dinner w/Ehud Barak … Woody Allen … Bob Kerrey, Mort Zuckerman … Joel Klein … Nicole Seligman,” with a chef engaged to cook.13 A January 2014 schedule records “Noon Fly Ehud Barak to Tampa” on January 26, 2014.14 On January 19, 2014 Epstein declined an invitation from Andrew Farkas to fly to the US Virgin Islands on January 27 for the governor’s State of the Territory address, writing, “can’t . have ehud barak with me.”15 A schedule sent by Groff on June 8, 2014 lists “3:00pm Appt w/Ehud” that Sunday and, for Monday June 9, “8:00pm DINNER w/Peter Thiel and Ehud Barak.”16

A five-page schedule for September 20 to September 30, 2014 lists Barak on three days: in the “People To See” list for Monday September 22, at “12:00pm Lunch W/Ehud” and a 1:00pm appointment “to join you and Ehud” on Tuesday September 23, and as “TBD Ehud Barak” on Thursday September 25.17 On September 2, 2014 Groff wrote to Kathryn Ruemmler, the former White House Counsel, that “Sept 25th Ehud Barak will be at Jeffrey’s home, might you be available to join?”, and Ruemmler answered, “I will be in NY on the 24th and 25th and would love to join.”18 On September 18, 2014 a member of Epstein’s staff wrote to Ruemmler under the subject “Jeffrey Epstein/Ehud”: “Might you be available to come see Jeffrey and Ehud Barak at 1pm on Tues Sept 23rd.” Ruemmler replied, “Yes. I can do Tuesday.”19 See Kathryn Ruemmler.

On September 21, 2013 Epstein wrote to Barak and to a second recipient whose address is redacted: ”… chief of staff of outara, he arrives tomorw, try to coordianate, i am flexible. if you decide you have time.” A member of his staff forwarded the message back to him three days later under the subject “Ehud/Chief of staff of Outara…”, asking, “Did I need to do anything for you with this?”20 In August and September 2016 Epstein’s assistant asked Stephen Wolfram’s office whether Wolfram “might be interested in meeting with Jeffrey and Ehud Barak the week of Sept 18th,” and a September 14, 2016 list of people to see at Harvard that Saturday includes “Ehud Barak (flying back to NY with you).”2122 A schedule for Monday August 29, 2016 records “12:30pm LUNCH w/Ehud Barak, Tom Barrack and VitalyChrukin.”23

On March 7, 2013 Epstein asked his flight staff about customs at Nashville, writing, “we would be picking up ehud barak and geroge mitcehll then flying to teerborol we would pre clear , land pick them up around 9 and then fly to ny?”24 In a message exchange with Steve Bannon dated September 5, 2018, Epstein wrote, “Im in paris thurs, back for the 17th , ehud barak with me in palm beach . woodward book fun.”25

Barak told the Daily Beast on July 15, 2019 that “the man who introduced me to Epstein about 17 years ago was Shimon Peres,” and that he had seen Epstein “more than 10 times and much less than a hundred times, but I can’t tell you exactly how many”; the Times of Israel reported on February 12, 2026 that he said he regretted “the moment I met him in 2003.”2627

The New York apartment

Epstein’s office referred to a New York apartment used by Barak as “Ehud’s apartment” and arranged and paid for its upkeep between at least 2015 and 2017.2829 Drop Site News reported on February 18, 2026, on the basis of the Department of Justice release, that the Israeli government installed and maintained security equipment at the building from early 2016 and that the arrangement was in place for at least two years.30 The same report notes that under Israeli law former prime ministers and other senior officials typically receive security services after leaving office, and records that Barak and the Israeli mission to the United Nations did not respond to its requests for comment.30

Barak’s recorded statements about the apartment go to his use of it rather than to the security arrangement. The Times of Israel reported on February 12, 2026 that he said it was “the right of every citizen” to stay in an apartment belonging to someone they know, and that “from time to time, when we visited the U.S., we stayed in an apartment belonging to Epstein… It was not a financial matter. It was about convenience.”2731 Asked about his stays there in August 2019, he told the Daily Beast that he was “not going to address these questions because in the current political environment in Israel, the mere fact of my response to such a question is churned up as spin in the political game.”32

Little St James, December 2014

On December 12, 2014 Epstein wrote to Barak, “you are being picked up at 4 . and brought to my island if that is ok?”4 Barak asked to move the pickup to 5pm, then wrote, “I’m coming now. Where can I get the driver?”; Epstein gave him a number and said the driver “will be there in 5 minutes.”4 Barak added, “I’ll come with one of my Sec guys. Is this ok?”4 Barak had written earlier that afternoon, “We are in the Hotel. Thx. Great place. When will we see you?”4 Barak told the Daily Beast on July 15, 2019 that he had been to the island “once, for several hours—and years after the publications about sex parties or orgies there,” and Haaretz reported on February 13, 2026 that he said, “There was one visit to the island, during the daytime, for three hours … On the island, there was only Epstein and a number of local employees who worked in gardening and maintenance.”2631 See Little Saint James.

Reporty Homeland Security and Carbyne

The 2014 approach and the investment

On December 18, 2014 Barak emailed Epstein under the subject “Reporty”: “Good conversation yesterday. To be continued on Monday after the CEO and his team will prepare more material. Darren & Nicole could also share impressions with you. / My accountant in Israel insists that from IL tax code perspective it’s important we will established our partnership as a US LLC. Can I introduce him to Darren so that we’ll be well coordinated on this issue? / Secondly, I assume that by Monday evening we will be ripe for decision on the investment. Most probably a positive one.”33 Epstein replied, “less than would hoped for,” and Barak asked, “Should we talk over the phone?”33 “Darren” is Epstein’s lawyer Darren Indyke.3 On December 23, 2014 Barak forwarded a request to Epstein: “Can we have a Skype telco this evening with Pinhas Buchris of Reporty? I propose around 330pm LSJ time.”34

On March 16, 2015 Southern Trust Company Inc. issued a wire memorandum over Darren Indyke’s signature instructing that One Million Dollars be sent to ERGO Ltd. at Bank Leumi le-Israel, Tel Aviv, under the reference “Reporty Investment.”6

The following day, March 17, 2015, the day of Israel’s Knesset election,35 Epstein sent Barak his lawyer’s comments on the loan documents. They record that “Borrower is Ergo Ltd., which is solely owned by EB and will be the general partner of the LLP that will invest in Reporty,” that the note would be assigned to the partnership once formed, and that Barak’s lawyer wanted Southern Trust to commit in writing to transfer “the additional $500K within 10 days” once an undefined “milestone” was achieved.3 The comments object that “they are insisting that your company, which has already funded $1MM to a newly formed entity without any signed documentation, to provide a document obligating itself to fund the additional $500k.”3 Barak replied the same evening: “Hi Jeff / Tense elections evening. / Would you like Udi to call you re this and then we will talk?”3

An Israeli lawyer wrote to Indyke on December 1, 2015 under the subject line “Reporty - Sum (E.B.) 2015 - Limited Partnership,” and told him that “the partnership is required to provide additional investment amount of $0.5M by the end of January, 2016.”36 Epstein forwarded the message to Nicole Junkermann, writing, “i think it is good with good timing.”36

Introductions to investors

On February 4, 2016 Epstein wrote to Andrew McCormack, copying Barak: “ehud barak former defense minister of israel has an interesting project called Reporty, you might want to take a look, ehud is copied on this email.”37 McCormack replied, “We’d love to hear more about Reporty, are you in NYC in the near term or would a phone call make more sense?”, and Barak answered, “I’m in NY from Feb 1[5] to March 3. Ready to meet here.”37 On May 21, 2018 Epstein wrote to Peter Thiel, “FYI trae is meeting carbyne Ehud Barak co.”38

On October 31, 2016 Epstein asked Barak, “reporty? news?” Barak replied on November 1: “Reporty moves on very good. / Dramatic developments in your elections make everything possible. / Worth a phone discussion.”39

The 2018–2019 warrants

On September 26, 2018 Barak emailed Epstein under the subject “Carbine/Reporty - SUM warrants”: “following our discussion please find attached the documents you’ve mentioned. Please let me know if any further information is needed for you to clarify the situation and the possible options. I’ve raised the other option and found both the CEO, CFO an[d] Carbine lawyers strongly rejecting it.”40 The same message reported that after an announcement at InterCure “the share price (in Tel Aviv stock exchange) jumped up 40% in two days,” and offered “further updates on political situation, better over a phone call.”40 Epstein and Barak exchanged messages about calling each other about it on October 4, 2018.40

An Israeli lawyer set out the structure to Indyke on February 28, 2019: “At the time of the initi[a]l investment in Carbyne Ltd. (formerly Reporty Ltd.), SUM (E.B.) Limited P[a]rtnership received Warrants to purchase additional 61,251 Preferred A Shar[e]s of Carbyne for an aggregate exercise price of US$ 3,500,000.”41 Exercising them would raise the partnership’s holding in Carbyne “from about 13% [t]o about 26.33%, on a fully diluted basis,” and the limited partners were asked to contribute their shares of the price: Southern Trust Inc. 66.67 per cent, or $2,400,000, and Montilla International Corporation 33.33 per cent, or $1,200,000.41 On March 12, 2019 Indyke wrote to Epstein, “Not sure how to respond. I thought we did not want your name associated with this Investment?”; on March 14 he asked whether “I may confirm that you are the controlling person of the STC,” and Epstein answered, “Yes.”42

Barak’s recorded statements go to the structure of the partnership and to his exit from it, not to that exchange. He wrote on Facebook on July 14, 2019: “For close to five years, a firm linked to Epstein has been an passive investor in a limited partnership registered in Israel under the law and controlled by me,” adding that “right after the current accusations in the Epstein case became known, I instructed my lawyers to look into the possibilities before us to remove the company tied to to Epstein from the limited partnership.”43 The Jerusalem Post reported on February 12, 2026 that he said he had severed the relationship in 2019, once the “true extent and depth of his disgusting crimes” emerged.8 Carbyne announced in April 2020 that Barak would step down from its board effective May 1, 2020, and that its founder Amir Elichai would replace him as chairman; Barak said that “after nearly six years involved with Carbyne, it is time for me to focus on my other endeavors.”44

The Qatar approach, 2019

On January 1, 2019 Barak wrote from his own address to Jabor Al Thani, copying Epstein, under the subject “Fwd: Qatar Presentation <> Carbyne 911”: “Please find attached sh[o]rt presentation of Carbine. Public safety company of which I’m the chairman and leading investor. / We are interested in participating in the security effort fo[r] the 2022 Games. We can work through a European company of your choice and minimize Israeli profile. Please consider.”7 Al Thani replied on January 20 that “Our security services compan[y] would like to commence a discussion” and asked also for help “with any anti-drone services or technologies.”45 Barak answered on January 21, “I’ll come back to you in few [d]ays. Overwhelmed in Davos,” and on February 3, “Israeli politics is complicated and time consuming and I’m a little bit involved,” naming Carbyne’s chief executive Amir Elichai as the contact and signing “Ehud Barak / Carbyne, Chairman.”45

Other ventures put to Epstein

The earliest of these exchanges runs the other way, with Epstein carrying a proposal outward. At 10:32 on the morning of Monday July 22, 2013 he wrote to Elon Musk, under a blank subject line: “chud barak, former defense minster of israel, former prime minister and head of the munich team, would like to discuss taking tesla to israel. he is very clever about many things that you have in the past shown interest in, when you are next on my coast let me know.” Musk answered at 12:36 the following morning: “Not a week passes without a request from someone important in Israel (and other countries) wanting to bring Tesla there. What they don’t appreciate is that Tesla is production constrained, not demand constrained. When production has increased to the point of addressing the major markets, then we will start shipping to tiny markets.” What Barak wanted is Epstein’s characterisation of it; nothing in the exchange is written by Barak, and no response from him is recorded on it.46

On October 23, 2014 Barak emailed Epstein, subject “letter to Renova.rtf”: “Hi Jeff / Pl find attached the letter I’ve sent to Viktor’s people. / Pl call me in three hrs to discuss further steps.”47 The attachment, a one-page letter addressed “Dear Yakov” that carries no header or date of its own, states that it encloses “the description of the Oil and Gas Company I have proposed to Renova”: “an independent oil and natural gas development, exploration and production company” with “approximately 70,000 net acres” of leases in the Rocky Mountains region, with a proposal “to sell either 25% of the Company for US$ 400 millions with a call option on the rest 75% - or, alternatively, to sell 100% of the Company - for US$ 1.6 Billion.” It asks that the description “be shown … to Viktor and the proper people in Renova,” and states, “There is a need to reach an understanding re my bonus, in case there is a deal which is being executed.”48

In April 2015 Barak sent Epstein a “5th Dimension Executive Summary.pdf,” writing, “Pl find under here a short summary of the Co. Will call you tomorrow?” and, two days later, “How do you like it?”49 In April 2016 Barak forwarded material on an Israeli radar company: “If you find it interesting enough, I propose we have a si[m]ilar arrangement to the one we had in Reporty. I believe Udi can nego[t]iate even better terms than what they proposed.”50 Epstein replied, “interested, both pa[rti]es exhibit little financial experience. , have you s[e]en a demonstration?”, and Barak wrote back that if Epstein agreed “I will send Udi to negotiate better financial te[r]ms with them. Based on the same construct we used in Reporty. You or Darren, and me will be updated along the way.”50 In July 2016 Barak forwarded the draft term sheet for the same company with the line, “We move forward. Please be ready.”51

Travel booked on Epstein’s account

A JetSuite reservation numbered 172186, on the account “Jeffrey Epstein” with Richard Kahn as contact, records a Citation Jet 3 from Washington Dulles to Boston Logan on Wednesday September 16, 2015, departing 11:00 am, with three passengers of whom “Barak, Ehud” is marked “Lead Passenger.”5 See Richard Kahn.

The Wexner Foundation payments

On August 26, 2019 the FBI’s Cleveland Field Office received an email from a member of the public; the bureau logged it on an FD-71A form titled “WEXNER FOUNDATION - financial connection to JEFFREY EPSTEIN” under the Epstein child sex trafficking case file, and attached the email.52 The email states that “During the years 2004[–]2006, the Wexner Foundation transferred at least 2.3 million USD to the Israeli former Prime Minister Ehud Barak,” that “Mr. Epstein signed personally on few of the transfers’ forms,” and that the amounts “were described as ‘research’.”53 It sets out the writer’s own suspicions of a “forbidden political contribution” and of money laundering; those are the writer’s allegations, and the FBI form records them as such.5253 See Les Wexner.

The Wexner Foundation has confirmed the payments.54 In a statement reported by the Times of Israel on July 9, 2020 it said Barak had completed and delivered a 267-page study on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and had delivered research and an abstract but not a full paper on a second commissioned study of leadership; its management had decided the work delivered “was enough to end the project and justify the payment.”54 A spokesman for Barak said in the same report that during the relevant period he “dealt with research and consulting for many bodies as a private person.”54 Barak told the Daily Beast on July 15, 2019: “I did what I committed to do.”26

Ynet reported on December 29, 2020 that the Supreme Court of Israel, sitting as the High Court of Justice, had dismissed a Likud petition seeking to compel a criminal investigation into the payments.55 JNS reported on March 17, 2026 that the Attorney General had declined to open one, on the stated basis that Barak held no public office when the money was paid and that limitation periods had run.56

JNS reported in the same article that Likud member of the Knesset Avihai Boaron and the Israeli NGO LAVI had filed a criminal complaint with the Israel Police on March 1, 2026, contending that documents published by the Department of Justice on January 30, 2026 show that Barak and the foundation “lied” to the High Court in 2020 about Epstein’s involvement in the payment, and characterising the funds as bribery of a public official.56 Those are the complainants’ allegations.56 The same report records the foundation’s position before the High Court in 2020, that Epstein was not involved in the decision to make the payments to Barak, and records no response from Barak or from the foundation to the complaint.56

The January 2016 photographs

The Daily Mail published photographs in 2016 of a man entering Epstein’s New York townhouse with his face partly covered; the subject was not then identified.57 The paper reissued them in July 2019, after Barak confirmed he was the man.57 Barak told the Daily Beast on July 15, 2019: “It is me in the picture. It was so cold the Middle Easterner had to put on a hat. I was there, for lunch or chat, nothing else.”26 His party said he “rejects with contempt the sordid insinuations in the story” and that “the reports and hints in the article are baseless,” and he said he would sue the paper for defamation.57 The Daily Mail said it stood by the article.58

The Giuffre allegation

The Times of Israel reported on June 24, 2020 that a filing by Alan Dershowitz in his defamation litigation with Virginia Giuffre stated: “Giuffre has also alleged that she was forced to have sex with former Israeli prime minister Ehud Barack [sic].”59 The account the filing refers to is in depositions taken in Giuffre’s litigation and held under seal; the same report records that Dershowitz’s counsel told a Florida hearing his team had obtained them, and the allegation reached the public record through Dershowitz’s filing.59 The response reported at the time came from associates of Barak, not from Barak himself: they told Channel 12 that his name was being “scrawled in the news in order to repel the allegations made against Dershowitz.”59 Speaking in February 2026 of his dealings with Epstein generally, Barak told N12: “I never, in all the 15 years that I knew [Epstein], never saw any unreasonable occurrence, or any unreasonable behavior.”27 No statement by Barak addressing this allegation is recorded on this page, and the Jerusalem Post headline of July 18, 2020, “Dershowitz: I don’t believe Virginia Giuffre’s claims on Ehud Barak,” records Dershowitz’s view rather than a response from Barak.60
