How the released files identify himHis own signature block: “Joel I. Klein / Chief Executive Officer, Amplify / Executive Vice President, News Corporation”12
Office he no longer heldHe was New York City schools chancellor until January 2011. Every message in the correspondence below post-dates that by more than two years; no document on this page shows him corresponding with Epstein while in public office3
Correspondence with Epstein in the released filesApril 24 to November 25, 2013, as sender on 81 distinct sheets. A separate exchange of May 8, 2013 places an earlier conversation between them at “about 2007-8”456
How the relationship is recorded as beginning on paperEpstein’s scheduler wrote on April 11, 2013, of the dinner two days before his first recorded thank-you: “We knew about Joel Klein already…but add in Barak!”7
What Epstein did for his businessIntroduced him by email, on a single morning in May 2013, to two people he then pitched: “would love to talk to you about what we’re doing at Amplify”89
What he did for Epstein’s tableCanvassed a mayor’s attendance at an Epstein dinner, offered himself and his wife in the mayor’s place, and proposed other guests: “Mary and David Boies? Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump?”1011
Invitation to Epstein’s propertiesInvited on June 2, 2013 to “come to the caribean for a weekend after june 25 .. or santa fe after aug 1”; he replied “Let me check and get back to you.” No document in the released set records a visit12
Press about Epstein, raised with him by EpsteinOn September 24, 2013 Epstein sent him a link to a blog item whose own address called Epstein a “child sex creep”. Klein asked “What caused this?” and the exchange turned to tabloids131415
The Zuckerman trustAn estate memorandum records that Mortimer Zuckerman “decided to appoint Joel Klein as a co-executor and co-trustee of the Management Trust”, with a limitation. On August 5, 2014 Epstein wrote to Zuckerman: “do not put restritctions on joel klein, at the same time you are relying on his integrity”1617

Joel Klein is a lawyer and education executive. He was chancellor of the New York City Department of Education until January 2011, and in the period covered by the documents below he was chief executive of Amplify, News Corporation’s education division, a role his own signature block states on fifteen sheets in the release.12 Emails released by the Justice Department under the Epstein Files Transparency Act record a dense seven-month correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein in 2013, breakfasts at Epstein’s house, introductions Epstein made for Amplify, dinner guest lists Klein helped assemble, an invitation to Epstein’s Caribbean property, and an exchange in which Epstein himself showed Klein how the press was describing him.

A separate thread places their acquaintance earlier than 2013. And a document of August 2014, outside the correspondence, records Epstein intervening in the terms of a trust instrument that named Klein a fiduciary.

No statement by Klein answering these particular documents is recorded on this page.

Several of the emails quoted below carry transmission damage in the print itself, an ”=” standing where a character was lost. Supplied characters are given in square brackets, and nothing the print actually carries has been altered.

The scale of the record

Nine spellings of his name appear across the release, including four that are plainly scanning or typing errors for the same man, “joel kein”, “joel kline”, “jocl klein” and “joel kleine”, one of which carries the document that dates the first dinner.18 Taken together they appear on 795 sheets across 737 containers. He is the printed sender on 81 sheets bearing distinct send times, from April 24 to November 25, 2013.19

Those are floors, not totals. Duplicate copies of a single email are counted as the separate sheets they are, and a name that failed to scan in a form not listed here would not have been found at all.

How it begins on paper

The earliest dated reference is not from Klein. On April 10, 2013 Epstein wrote to his scheduler, Lesley Groff: “joel kein and ehud also on the 23, with new chef”.20 Groff forwarded it the next morning under the subject “April 23 Dinner” with her own note: “We knew about Joel Klein already…but add in Barak! (which probably means Nili too) We are up to (9 pp including JE).”7

That sentence does two things. It places Klein on the guest list before Ehud Barak was added, so he was the prior fixture and Barak the addition; and it means his invitation pre-dates the earliest email he is recorded sending.

The dinner took place. At 3:16 p.m. the following afternoon, April 24, 2013, Klein wrote to Epstein’s address under the subject “Thanks”:

Really enjoyed last night. Like that your mind is anything but conventiona[l]. Thanks for including me. (Sorry Nicole couldn’t make — Japanese video[ ]conferences take place at inopportune hours.) Hope we find a time to do it[ ]again. Best, Joel4

The page for Ehud Barak carries the schedule for that evening, which lists Woody Allen, Bob Kerrey, Mortimer Zuckerman, Klein and Nicole Seligman among those expected. Klein’s letter is what converts that schedule from a plan into an attended dinner, and it also establishes that one person named on the schedule did not attend. Klein identified her himself to Epstein’s office three weeks later: “Her name is Nicole Seligman.”21

Later the same day, in a second message, Klein answered something Epstein had sent him about the brain and an article:

As for the brain, have you spent time with Kandel? As for the article, the intersections are amazing. I was Dershowitz’s research asst in 1971 at Stanford Center for Behavioral Sciences. He fixed Nicole and me up.22

Alan Dershowitz was one of Epstein’s lawyers. Klein’s sentence is the documented origin of that connection in his own hand: a 1971 research assistantship, and an introduction to the woman he married.

An earlier conversation, about Zuckerman

On May 8, 2013 Epstein wrote: “If my memory is correct , you and I have spoken in the distant past , when I was concerned regarding morts emotional”, the sentence runs on past the fragment captured on the sheet. Klein replied “Possible, but I’m not recalling.” Epstein came back: “I recall his state , vividly - her name murky”. Klein then answered: “About 2007-8? If so, you’re right about his state.”6

Klein’s “About 2007-8?” is the only date either man puts on the earlier contact, and he puts it as a question. It places an acquaintance concerning Mortimer Zuckerman some five or six years before the 2013 correspondence. A woman is referred to in the exchange and neither man names her; she is not named here.

What Epstein did for Amplify

On the morning of May 24, 2013 Epstein made introductions. Within three minutes Klein sent two near-identical replies to two different recipients:

Thanks, Jeffrey. Steven, would love to talk about what we’re doing at Amplify. If you’re interested, let me know a good time to talk.8

Thanks, Jeffrey. Joe, would love to talk to you about what we’re doing at Amplify. Let me know if you have plans to be in NYC, otherwise, happy to come up there.9

The first is addressed to Steven Sinofsky; the second to a recipient the document gives only as “Joe”, and this page does not supply a surname the sheet does not carry. Two months later Klein wrote again about Sinofsky: “Impressive. What’s his wife’s name ( also impressive). Thanks for brkfas[t]”.23

Epstein also introduced him to Joi Ito, then director of the MIT Media Lab. On July 13, 2013 Klein wrote: “For intro to Joi Ito. Just had breakfast. Engaging, interesting mind. See you Friday.”24

Alongside the introductions runs a steady exchange on education technology, in which Klein is the practitioner and Epstein the correspondent with opinions. “This is what we’re doing, both with curriculum and with games. Happy to discuss when I see you,” Klein wrote on May 2, 2013, and four minutes later added: “Btw, don’t agree shitty teachers will work, but that’s another story.”2526 He sent Epstein a TED lecture, a Washington Post column headed “What Is the Value of Algebra?”, and an Economist briefing on education technology.272829 On May 24 he wrote, in a message whose entire body is five words: “You are a great teacher”.30

Breakfasts, and the house

The meetings are recorded in Klein’s own confirmations and in the office’s arrangements. “Confirming 8[:00 at your] house,” he wrote on May 5, 2013.31 On June 24 he negotiated a time with Epstein’s office, “Thanks, tough week. Would tomorrow at 5-6[ or] Thursday work?”, and was answered: “3:00 on Thursday would be super. Please come see Jeffrey at his home: 9 East 71st Street between 5th and Madison.”32 That is Epstein’s Manhattan townhouse.

A calendar page from the same period lists “Breakfast w/Joel Klein” on a morning that also carries “Appt w/Leon Black” and, in the afternoon, “Go See Mort Zucke[rman]”.33

On September 2, 2013 the two men fixed a meeting in five messages inside eighteen minutes, “Yep”, “After 3?”, “See you at 4”, and Epstein forwarded the last of them onward two minutes later.34

The invitation to the properties

On June 1, 2013 Epstein asked “tues wed thurs? free? breakfast” and Klein answered “Australia. Back Friday.” Epstein wrote the next morning: “shame. why don’t you plan to come to the caribean for a weekend after june 25 .. or santa fe after aug 1”. Klein replied: “Let me check and get back to you.”12

The documents elsewhere identify those two places as Epstein’s Caribbean island, Little Saint James, and his New Mexico ranch. No document in the released set records Klein visiting either property, and no later message in the 2013 correspondence returns to the invitation. That is a statement about what this release contains, over the window the correspondence covers; it is not a finding that no visit occurred.

Declines

Several of Epstein’s invitations were refused. On September 10, 2013 Epstein asked whether “the morning of the 21 work[s] for a breakfast with me and [E]hud Barak”. Klein: “Thanks, but it doesn’t work. In Sag Harbor then.” Epstein tried again, “should we try for a different day? or not interested”, and Klein answered “Different day if poss”.35 Eight days later Epstein asked: “you have any time tomor[row] night? ehud terje rod larsen. me”. Klein: “Don’t, got some opening to do. Thanks for trying.”36 Epstein had written to someone else on September 6: “lets have Joel klein meet with me and ehud when he is here”; Klein’s reply in that thread reads “Thanks, always stimulating being with you.”37

The Woody Allen birthday dinner was also declined, and it is a separate event from the April gathering seven months earlier. On November 25, 2013 Groff wrote that she would let Klein know “the date of the Woody Allen dinner will change to either the 3rd or the 5th”; Epstein had already written to Klein at 10:38 the previous night, “will need to move woodys dinner, either 3 or 5th. let you know tues.” Klein’s reply, at 12:08 that afternoon, is the last message he is recorded sending in the release: “Tied up both nights, sorry.”538

The guest lists

In November 2013 Klein was working a different side of the same table. Epstein had asked him on November 13 whether he wanted to come to dinner; Klein’s answers run through who else would be there. “Thanks. Nice thoug[ht]. [My w]ife may be in Tokyo, if here, she included? Same q for mayor re diana so I know who to invite,” he wrote, and then: “Let me see if mayor is good. Could influence mix.”3940 Epstein’s reply in that thread reads: “as you know your wife is exempt from the normal . obviously, . michaels as well”, a sentence this page quotes without interpreting it.41

Three days later: “Re invite? Waiting [to] hear from mayor. Will goose Monday.”42 Then, on November 18:

Mayor’s people just called to say he’s out of town. You can have me, possibly my wife (if no Tokyo) or pass on the lot of us. What works for you. JK10

Epstein forwarded that message onward under the subject line “woody dinner”.43 Asked for other names, Klein proposed:

Don’t know who he […] most people are ponderous, I fear. Mary and David Boies? Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump?11

Jared Kushner and Ivanka Trump have pages here; David Boies, a litigator who later represented Epstein accusers, does not yet. The documents do not record whether any of the three was invited.

What Epstein showed him about himself

On September 24, 2013 at 10:57 a.m. Epstein sent Klein a link. The item was about Woody Allen, and the link’s own address described Epstein as a “child sex creep”. One minute later Klein replied: “What caused this?” Epstein: “a walk … lucky they didn;t see Bill go in first”. Klein: “So[rr]y”. Epstein then passed along a line he attributed to Woody Allen, who had quoted Truman Capote on the tabloids, “they were like dogs barking at the carava[n]”, and Klein answered: “Yup, or as mike said, eventually people wrap dead fish in them.”131415

The forename “Bill” is left as the document leaves it, and “mike” likewise; neither is expanded here.

Eleven days earlier Epstein had raised a different press item, writing that a “Huffing[ton] post article from years ago is a distraction”. Klein replied: “Doubt. It, not the thing they do. Which article. Google showed quite a few on Huff Po.”44

These two exchanges are the clearest documentary evidence of what Klein was told about Epstein’s public characterisation, and when. In both, the subject was introduced by Epstein, and in both the correspondence continued.

A third exchange, on October 9, 2013, is less legible: Epstein wrote “I know you are trying to help our friend. anything I can do , count me in”, and Klein answered “Thanks, got it.”45 Neither message names the person referred to, and this page does not supply a name.

The Zuckerman trust, and Epstein’s objection to its terms

The last document is not correspondence with Klein and he is not shown a copy of it.

An estate memorandum in the release, written to Epstein, reports the state of a will and a trust being prepared for Mortimer Zuckerman and the plan to execute them in July. It records:

Mort decided to appoint Joel Klein as a co-executor and co-trustee of the Management Trust, but Joel will not automatically serve as co-trustee of the subtrusts arising under the Management Trust. Mort will discuss compensation with Joel.16

On August 5, 2014, from the address [email protected] and addressed on the sheet to Mortimer Zuckerman, Epstein sent eleven numbered criticisms of Zuckerman’s own will. They open “wills are public documents. trusts are not. your will should state nothing but I give all to trusts,” run through bequests and trustee compensation, and include, as item 8:

do not put restritctions on joel klein, at the same time you are relying on his integrity17

Item 8 answers the limitation the memorandum records. The restriction that the memorandum describes a co-trusteeship of the Management Trust that does not carry through to the subtrusts, is the thing Epstein is pressing the testator to drop. Three copies of the message are in the release, two timed 1:28 a.m. and one 5:05 p.m. on the same day.1746

What the documents establish is this: Klein was named a fiduciary in another man’s estate instrument, on terms that limited his role, and Epstein wrote privately to that man arguing the limits should be removed. The documents do not record whether Zuckerman changed the instrument, what Klein knew of Epstein’s letter, or whether the two things were connected other than in Epstein’s own account. Nothing on this page records a payment in either direction between Epstein and Klein.

What this page does not contain

A single sheet in the release carries the words “victim”, “minor”, “underage”, “massage”, “complainant” and “trafficking” alongside Klein’s name. It is a book-length manuscript held in the corpus as one undivided page of over a million characters, its only reference to Klein is the 1971 research assistantship he describes in his own email above, and it carries material about a complainant that is not quoted or cited anywhere on this site. Across the other 794 sheets on which any form of his name appears, those terms do not occur at all.

A telephone number he gave Epstein, and a third party’s address, appear in the correspondence and are not reproduced here.

Method note

Claims on this page are drawn from the released documents cited in the footnotes. Each footnote pins the sheet and page where the quoted words appear. The nine name-forms were searched as a union; the counts given are floors. Where a sender, forename or surname is not printed on the sheet, it has not been supplied from elsewhere. One widely-quoted line, a remark about enjoying the island, has been checked against every sheet in the release that carries it and belongs to a different correspondent writing about construction equipment; it is not Klein’s, and is not used here.
