Brad S. Karp (born July 25, 1959) is an American lawyer at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP, where he chaired the litigation department from 2000 to 2007 and served as chairman of the firm from 2008 until February 2026.31 Documents released by the Department of Justice record correspondence and meetings between Karp and Jeffrey Epstein from late 2013 to April 2019, including appointments at Epstein’s house at 9 East 71st Street in Manhattan, telephone calls arranged through both men’s assistants, a dinner at Epstein’s house at which Woody Allen was among the guests and which Karp attended with a family member, and exchanges about legal, tax and business matters.6789 Paul Weiss has said that the contact arose out of the firm’s retention by Leon Black, then chief executive of Apollo Global Management, to negotiate a series of fee disputes with Epstein; that “[t]he firm was adverse to Epstein, and at no point did Paul Weiss or Brad Karp ever represent him”; and that Karp “never witnessed or participated in any misconduct.”1011 Karp resigned as chairman on February 4, 2026, days after the correspondence was published, remaining a partner at the firm, as the Boston Globe and NBC News reported; Scott Barshay succeeded him.4512
The Leon Black fee dispute
Paul Weiss’s account of how the two men came to be in contact is that the firm was retained by Leon Black “to negotiate a series of fee disputes with Jeffrey Epstein that spanned several years,” a representation the firm dates from 2013.1011 Contemporaneous documents are consistent with that account. In February 2016 Karp asked Epstein by email, “How did Thursday’s meeting with Leon go? Progress? Happy to catch up whenever is good for you.”13 A week later Karp wrote to Epstein that he had received a message that Black had called and that “[m]y instinct is not to say anything about what you mentioned to me. I presume that’s right. I don’t know if you told him that you mentioned it to me, but I certainly don’t want to say anything I shouldn’t.”; Epstein replied, “Your instincts are correct. I did tell him that I thought the fee was very unfair and suggested you hear both sides.”14
On January 4, 2016 Epstein sent Karp a draft of a letter to Black setting out his own account of the fee arrangement, under the subject line “for your eyes only. thnx i have not sent this yet.”15 A version of the same letter circulated in Epstein’s office in December 2017 states that Epstein had learned “after a number of conversations with brad karp that a total of only 20m would be paid,” that he “wondered whether brad even knew of our prior agreement. I called him and he said he was never told,” and that he had asked to “send him this email, with your consent of course.”16 The Dechert LLP report commissioned by Apollo’s conflicts committee records that Black paid Epstein $158 million for work performed between 2012 and 2017.17 See Leon Black.
Meetings and telephone calls
The earliest appointment cited here is an entry on Epstein’s schedule for Thursday, November 7, 2013, “2:00pm Appt w/Brad Karp at Paul Weiss,” with the address given as 1285 Avenue of the Americas.6 A calendar reminder for the same appointment gives the slot as 2pm to 3pm Eastern time.18 Epstein had proposed the date on October 27, 2013, writing to his assistant, “brad karp ? 2 on the 7th. …”19 A calendar reminder on November 4 read “double check address for Brad Karp for Nov. 7 appt,” and on the day itself Epstein’s assistant reported that “Brad Karp is chairing the firm lunch from 1-2pm today…his assistant doesn’t believe he will be able to meet earlier (1:30 or 1:45), but said she will ask just in case it is possible.”2021
Later meetings took place at Epstein’s Manhattan house. On April 25, 2014 Epstein’s assistant circulated the day’s schedule with the note “Brad Karp will come see JE today at 2pm,” listing the appointment after a noon meeting with “Rich and Darren”; the appointment was moved to 3pm the same afternoon.2223 On October 3, 2016 Lesley Groff wrote to Karp, “Might you be available to meet with Jeffrey this Wed. Oct. 5th? Perhaps 3:45pm? … Jeffrey’s home address is 9 East 71st Street between 5th and Madison.” Karp replied, “Hi, Lesley. If others are free, I can move the meetings I’ve got on Wed afternoon. I need to be back in my office for a board meeting at 5.”24 The meeting was reset for 9am on Friday, October 7, described in Epstein’s office as “just be coffee.” At 2:33am that morning Karp wrote, “I’ve just been asked to present on a board call tomorrow at 8:30 and I’ve got to be down at the NY DFS at 11. Any way we can turn our meeting into a call and can I call you the moment my board call ends, probably around 9:15? … I can probably swing by later in the day, but maybe it’s best to speak in the morning and compare our schedules in the later afternoon, after your meetings. Would that work?”25 At 11:53am Karp wrote to Epstein’s assistant, “Jeffrey and I have been exchanging notes. I got stuck in a board meeting and will be calling Jeffrey this morning instead.”26 Three minutes later Epstein’s office circulated an internal message: “Brad Karp cancelled 9am … Brad Karp will not be coming at 9am anymore! Cancelled!”2728
On October 16, 2016 Epstein’s assistant asked Karp, “will you be joining the lunch today with Jeffrey and Ehud Barak at noon at Jeffrey’s home?”; Karp answered, “Hi, Lesley. I’m out of town at a wedding, and unfortunately haven’t been able to get back to nyc in time.”29 Calendar alerts record a 2:30pm appointment with Karp on July 11, 2017, and a question that morning about whether Epstein wanted “snacks at the 2:30 meeting with Brad Karp.”3031 On August 9, 2018 Epstein’s assistant reconfirmed an 11am meeting at 9 East 71st Street; Karp replied, “Just got off a call with a judge. I’m running about 10 minutes late. I apologize and hope that’s ok.”32 A June 8, 2018 alert asks, “when will we receive Brad Karp package by hand today?”33 On October 12, 2018 Groff wrote that “Brad Karp is confirmed to come see you on Thursday Oct. 18th at 3:30pm.”34
Telephone contact ran through both offices. Messages from Epstein’s assistant read “Please call Brad Karp” (December 20, 2013), “Brad Karp returned your call. He will be in the office for next 5 hours and should be reachable” (January 31, 2014) and “Please call brad Karp” (May 13, 2014).353637 A call list of January 31, 2014 names Karp among those Epstein “wanted to speak with,” annotated “(he has not called back).”38 On December 1, 2016 Karp’s assistant Selinda Munzell emailed Epstein’s assistant: “Jeffrey called this morning to speak to Brad, and Brad was unavailable at the time. Jeffrey asked me to call you to schedule a 5 minute call today”; she wrote later the same day, “Good news — he just called and they are speaking at the moment.”3940 In July 2015 Epstein’s office twice circulated a contact card file, “Brad Karp.vcf,” on July 17 and July 20.4142
Dinners and screenings
Epstein’s office arranged a private screening of a Woody Allen film for May 21, 2014, handling it through an assistant to Allen at the Manhattan Film Center; Karp and a family member were among those proposed to attend.43 On May 15 Lesley Groff told Epstein that “Brad Karp is thrilled about the Woody Allen screening,” and asked whether a family member of Karp’s could also be included.44 Karp confirmed by email on May 20 that he would attend, writing, “Thanks, We will. Brad,” in reply to an instruction to “please arrive the screening room tomorrow along with your kids.”45
Epstein’s office arranged a dinner at his house on the evening of Tuesday, July 21, 2015, with Woody Allen among the guests; the schedule lists Karp as attending with a family member.9 The day before, a legal assistant at Darren K. Indyke, PLLC asked Epstein’s staff for Karp’s contact details: “He’s coming to the house for dinner tomorrow night and need to confirm.”46 At 5:49 the next morning Karp wrote to Epstein:47
I can’t thank you enough for including me in an evening I’ll never forget. It was truly “once in a lifetime” in every way, though I hope to be invited again. You are an extraordinary host — and your home…!!! Thanks, again. See you soon.
Epstein replied, “you are always welcome. . there are many many nights of unique talents. you will be invited often,” and Karp answered, “You’re amazing…and thank you!”47 Later that morning Epstein wrote that he had been “just talking to larry summers about you and telling him that he needs to meet you when i get back.”48
On March 28, 2016 Groff asked Allen’s assistant to arrange a further screening: “Jeffrey says he spoke with Woody and Woody says it is ok for Brad Karp plus 4 can go screen his movie on Wed.” She replied that the print was being sent back to the lab “to get it ready for Cannes.”49 Epstein’s assistant then asked whether a family member of Karp’s could join the rescreening, and Karp replied that his family member “would love to be there,” copying him on the reply; the screening was held at the Film Center on Park Avenue the following afternoon.50
Legal, tax and business exchanges
On December 6, 2013 Epstein sent Karp a numbered list beginning “1. Hope you can convince Kathy Ruemmler” and continuing with a proposal that Paul Weiss create “[a] personal wealth division” serving billionaire clients across “securities law. trust and estates. income tax, litigation matrimonial. maritime ( boats and planes ), state and local . bankruptcy, art expertise. etc.”; the fourth item named the Apollo co-founder Josh Harris as “another perfect example. - he will contact you.” Karp replied just after noon: “Thanks, Jeffrey. Still working on 1. 2 is compelling and we’re working on 3. I’ll speak to Josh. Hope all is well.”51 In January 2014 Epstein asked Harris directly, “have you spoken with brad karp. or leon?”52 In May 2014 Groff reported that Karp’s assistant would help arrange a call with Paul Weiss partner Greg Ezring.53 In June and July 2014 Epstein recommended Karp and Paul Weiss to Bill Gates and to Connie Collingsworth, general counsel of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, in connection with a donor-advised-fund project, writing to Gates that “it would be helpful if at sometime in the very near future if Bill would call Brad Karp. senior managing partner of Paul Weiss, and tell him how glad he is that Russo and Ezring are working on the complications of this future DAF project,” naming two Paul Weiss lawyers already engaged on the matter, and writing to Collingsworth, “I suggest you call Brad Karp, and tell him you are calling at my suggestion, Brad is the managing partner.”5455 Collingsworth had already told Epstein, “I plan to continue to consult with Morgan Lewis as counsel for the foundation. You are of course, free to use whoever you want as your counsel.”55
On October 3, 2014 Epstein asked Karp to remind Paul Weiss real-estate lawyer Kathryn McCormick that Leon Black “is an important client”; Karp answered, “Ugh. I’ll follow up immediately.”56
On July 26, 2015 Epstein consulted Karp about a potential legal claim by a woman against a man, arising from a “cancer” text message; Karp replied that he did not think she had a “legal” claim, “there have been no promises made, no stalking, no threats,” but that he had told the man that the filing of a baseless lawsuit “would be devastating to him and his world and he should do everything he can to avoid that.” Neither person is named in the document.57
On August 26, 2016 Epstein asked his assistant to “set a call this morning with brad karp. and pat fenn”; Karp answered the invitation, “Works for me. Can we add Brad Wechsler to the call as well?” The call was set for 11am with Epstein, Karp, Patrick B. Fenn of Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld and Brad Wechsler.585960 On September 1, 2016 Epstein wrote, “when you have a minute or two i can bring you up to speed on the 8865 issues”; Karp replied, “Of course. On your cell?”61 On November 7, 2016 Wechsler emailed Epstein: “I got a download from jc and rj on the 8865 call earlier today and there’s an issue I’d like to discuss with you. Also, are you interacting with brad karp on the ‘reasonable cause’ cover note or do you want me to? Finally, is PW writing for all three guys?”62
On December 3, 2016 Karp wrote to Epstein: “John Suydam is looking into this; he was not aware that Apollo has paid Deloitte. Turns out that PwC was not retained by Akin; it was retained directly by Josh. I told Pesner he had to retain the firm to create the privilege. Akin says it is representing Marc and Josh.” Epstein had asked, “did we get the bills?”, and forwarded Karp’s reply to Leon Black the same day.63 Other exchanges were brief and personal or commercial: Epstein asked on August 29, 2016 whether “Caesars [is] getting better or worse,” and Karp answered “Slightly better”; on October 6, 2017 Epstein asked “how bad does the harvey weinstein story get?” and Karp answered, “I think it gets pretty bad — and a little bit worse every day.”6465 In May 2018 Karp reported that a tolling agreement had been signed by “A’s bookeeper … without A’s knowledge.”66 On November 30, 2018 Epstein wrote “fyi , i settled with boies”; Karp replied, “That is great news.”67
Kathryn Ruemmler
Epstein’s December 2013 message to Karp opened with “Hope you can convince Kathy Ruemmler,” and Karp answered that he was “[s]till working on 1.”51 Kathryn Ruemmler served as White House Counsel from 2011 to 2014.68 On July 22, 2014 Larry Summers asked Epstein by email, “Btw. How have u come to know Cathy Ruemmler,” and Epstein answered, “did she call you? brad karp, head of paul weiss initially.”69 On December 29, 2015 Epstein wrote to Karp, “if you are really interested in Ruemmler we should talk sooner rather than later”; Karp replied, “I’m certain we are.”70
On May 18, 2017 Epstein’s assistant asked Karp, “Jeffrey is asking if you would like to join him and Kathy Ruemmler tomorrow at the house at 5:30pm..might this work for you? 9 East 71st Street between 5th and Madison.” Karp replied, “I can join for about an hour. I need to introduce someone at a dinner in midtown at 6:45. Would that work for Jeffrey?”71 See Kathryn Ruemmler.
2017 to 2019
On April 20, 2017 Epstein asked Terje Rød-Larsen, “can we invite brad karp and michael wolfe [Wolff] to oslo”; Rød-Larsen answered the next morning that the two would be invited but that he needed email addresses, and Epstein replied that morning with Karp’s address.72 On December 5, 2017 Karp proposed moving a meeting because of a “Mt Sinai bd meeting.”73 On April 27, 2018 Epstein wrote, “i hope your evening was at least 25 % as much fun as mine. woody the left and bannon the alt right. funny funny funnny did you get leon?”; Karp answered, “Well, Schindler’s List isn’t a barrel of laughs, though Spielberg was interesting. Your night must have been wildly fun. I’ve got a call into our friend.”74
The correspondence continues into 2019, in the months in which Epstein was litigating over the 2007 non-prosecution agreement. On February 9, 2019 Epstein wrote, “exciting times. when you are free to catch up. let me know. phone”; Karp answered, “Yes, for sure!”75 On February 28, after Epstein wrote “thoughts? fyi kathy coming to my house tomorw . morning,” Karp replied, “Let’s talk.”76 On March 2 Karp wrote, “Thanks. And thanks for your help yesterday. I hope you’re staying calm. let me know what I can do to help,” and Epstein answered, “your judgment and friendship. . i m thinking that the defense team should sign a direct response to the editorial. . thoughts?”77 The same weekend Epstein wrote “will need tough civil attny” and Karp replied, “I’ve got some ideas.”78
On March 3, 2019 Karp emailed Epstein about a draft court filing, under a message thread subject-lined “ATTORNEY CLIENT”; like most of the emails quoted on this page, the messages in this exchange carry a footer describing their contents as privileged, and the exchange appears in a document production that is now public:79
The draft motion is in great shape. It’s overwhelmingly persuasive. Truly. Wish there was a different case name than “Fokker,” but we can’t have everything. In all seriousness, I don’t see a credible counter to our arguments. The case law is totally stacked in favor of our position. Even the equities are — I particularly liked the argument that the “victims” lied in wait and sat on their rights for their strategic advantage, knowing you were in prison, before they came forward. The amici letter is well done as well. I’m wondering if it makes sense to attach to the amici request a close-to-final draft of the legal analysis, which is more persuasive than the summary in the amici letter. I do think it may be difficult to persuade amici to wade into this issue because of the controversy.
Epstein forwarded the message at 9:27 that morning to Kathryn Ruemmler, his criminal defense lawyer Martin Weinberg and Darren Indyke.79 Weinberg replied that “I don’t see a compelling reason not to share the legal analysis. Brad can ask the potential amici not to widely disseminate it except for the purpose of deciding whether to help, but under the worst of circumstances the Jane Does get an advanced view of some of our evolving legal positions, no great damage, many of the arguments are already in the CVRA record through the Government’s prior pleadings.”79 Paul Weiss has not addressed this exchange specifically; it has said more broadly that the firm was adverse to Epstein throughout and that neither the firm nor Karp ever represented him.10
On March 5, 2019 Epstein wrote that “not public yet, but doj is moving the defense of the case to the N[.]D[.] georgia. . so the southern district attnys might end up being fact witnesses”; Karp answered, “Love it!”80 On March 30, 2019 Epstein asked, “is your go to investigators kroll?” and Karp replied, “I use Nardello, who I think is better at these types of matters.”81 Correspondence continued into April 2019: Epstein wrote to Karp about breakfasts and visits at his house with Steve Bannon, and on April 7 the two discussed whether Kathryn Ruemmler could “rep FB from inside PW.”8283 Epstein was arrested on July 6, 2019.84

Resignation as chairman
On February 3, 2026 Reuters reported a statement from Paul Weiss that “[d]uring the course of that representation, which spanned several years, Mr. Karp never witnessed or participated in any misconduct. Mr. Karp attended two group dinners in New York City and had a small number of social interactions by email, all of which he regrets.”1185 The firm also said that it had been “retained by Leon Black, then the CEO of the firm’s longtime client Apollo, to negotiate a series of fee disputes with Jeffrey Epstein that spanned several years,” that “[t]he firm was adverse to Epstein,” and that “at no point did Paul Weiss or Brad Karp ever represent him.”10
The Boston Globe and NBC News reported on February 4 and 5, 2026 that Karp stepped down as chairman that Wednesday, February 4, effective immediately, and remained a partner.45 In a statement issued through the firm he said that “recent reporting has created a distraction and has placed a focus on me that is not in the best interests” of the firm.45 Scott Barshay, chair of the firm’s corporate practice, succeeded him.12

Epstein to Terje Rød-Larsen, Apr 20, 2017, and Rød-Larsen’s reply of Apr 21 asking for email addresses, both carried on https://epstein-data.com/EFTA02210485 p.1. At 600 dpi that sheet prints “michael wolfe” — the final letter a closed bowl with a horizontal crossbar, against the open
cof “michael” on the same line — with two spaces before “to”; the corpus extraction reads “michael wolfc”, and the bracketed gloss above is this page’s, not the sheet’s. The sheet’s own top-level message, at aSent:field of “Fri 4/21/2017 11:42:00 AM”, lists three names each followed by a barred address value, but itsFrom:line is barred in full and this page does not identify its sender; an earlier version of this page attributed that message to Epstein. The message that does record Epstein sending Karp’s address is his own, and it is a different sheet: aFrom:line naming “jeffrey E.” in the clear, aSent:field of “Friday, April 21, 2017 9:59 AM”, aTo:line reading “Terje Rod-Larsen; Michael Wolff” and a subject of “Re:”, replying to Rød-Larsen’s request with Karp’s and Wolff’s contact details beneath it, above the quoted request and Epstein’s own message of the night before.EFTA02210485p.1 was read at the image at 600 dpi andEFTA02651364p.1 at 400 dpi. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA02651364 p.1 ↩ -
