What this page does and does not contain

This page is about a New York restaurateur who wrote to Jeffrey Epstein for a decade and who was named as a successor Executor in a will Epstein executed in June 2017 - a will Epstein revoked in May 2018 - and in two of his trusts. Stephen Hanson ran the restaurant group BR Guest Hospitality as its chief executive; Epstein, declining in 2018 to take sides in a quarrel between him and a third man, wrote that he wanted to stay out of it because both men were friends of his and always would be.1 Nothing in the record read for this page suggests he is a complainant, a survivor or a witness of that kind, and this page makes no such suggestion.

He is among the twenty largest correspondents in the index by sender volume, and until now he had no page. The index records 2,817 documents whose sender field carries a form of his name; only nineteen sender strings in the whole index carry more. A union of thirty spellings reaches 7,968 documents. Both figures are floors.2

The index records his name in three unconnected shapes - Steve Hanson, Stephen Hanson and the mail handle Shanson900 - and they are one man. The first section below gives the evidence. A fourth form in the index, David Hanson, is a different person and is excluded.

No medical, clinical or family detail about any person is reproduced here, and the documents in his correspondence that carry such material were set aside entirely: they are neither cited, quoted nor described, and this page is silent about what is in them.

No electronic address, telephone number or account identifier of any private person is reproduced here. Jeffrey Epstein’s own address is reproduced where it stands in a header that is quoted.

Being named in a will is not an office held. The instruments make a successor’s appointment effective only when the successor signs an acceptance, and no acceptance signed by him is in the files read for this page. This page does not say he was an executor or a trustee.

Stephen Hanson built and ran one of New York’s larger restaurant groups, took a private-equity firm in as a partner, fell out with it, and left under a separation agreement after a termination his lawyers called a nullity. Through all of it he was writing to Jeffrey Epstein - for a decade, about restaurants, hotels, staff, aeroplanes, money and dinner.

He is a large correspondent who has been invisible for an arithmetical reason. The project’s index splits his mail across three unconnected sender strings. No screen of any one full name reaches the other two, and no variant tool generates the mail handle from the name. Counted together, his 2,817 sender documents are beaten by nineteen other sender strings in the whole index. Counted apart, his largest single string is beaten by fifty-four.2

He is one man, and here is how that is settled

The index carries four Hanson sender forms of any size: Steve Hanson (1,196 documents), Stephen Hanson (1,035), Shanson900 (449) and David Hanson (51). The last is a different person and is dealt with at the end of this section. The first three are one man, and the proof is not that they appear together - two people appear in one thread all the time - but that single sheets carry one form signing, receiving or forwarding what another form sent.

First, a signature block, read at the page image. A message of 23 April 2013 carries the header From: Steve Hanson and is signed, three lines below the body, Stephen Hanson, above a restaurant group’s standard footer. Epstein’s message beneath it reads:25

lets go out tomorw night, not one of your places, mayne 15 of us

and Hanson’s reply opens:25

I can join you after 845pm, just tell me where.

This is not an isolated sheet. Across the index, 135 documents whose sender field is a Steve form also carry the string Stephen Hanson somewhere in their text, and 40 run the other way.26

Second, one address under two names, read at the page image. On 3 December 2014 Lesley Groff forwarded a message to Epstein under the subject line Steve Hanson. The forwarded header inside it reads From: Stephen Hanson at a personal address. One sheet, one message, both names.27

Third, the mail handle. On 21 September 2016 a message whose sender field the index records as Shanson900 forwards a hotel-projection thread. Inside the forward, the message being passed on is addressed To: Stephen Hanson. The handle forwarded what the name received.28 On 8 December 2013 the same handle - the index renders it shanso, the quoted-printable soft break having cut it - forwarded a message from Barry Sternlicht of Starwood Capital addressed To: Stephen / brg / Hanson.29

Fourth, and independent of all the e-mail: the instruments. Two trust agreements drafted for the same settlor name the same man in the same role-chain, one spelling him STEPHEN HANSON and the other STEVE HANSON, each time immediately after David Mitchell or Kathryn Ruemmler and before Eva Dubin.2021

Stephen P. Hanson is the same man again, and one document proves it in a single address block: a Starwood letter of 4 November 2013 is addressed to SPH Family Holdings, LLC (successor-in-interest to Stephen P. Hanson) over the lines Stephen Hanson / President & CEO and Attention: Stephen P. Hanson.30 SPH is his initials, and the family holding companies that held his stake carry them.

David Hanson is pruned, and the test that prunes him

The roboticist David Hanson of Hanson Robotics corresponded with Epstein through Ben Goertzel and is a different man. The cheap test is the one that settled the forms above, run against him: of the 51 documents whose sender field reads David Hanson, not one carries the string Stephen Hanson - against 135 for the Steve forms in the same measurement.7 A message of 20 May 2013 from Epstein’s office names both men in one sentence as separate invitees to the same lunch.31

Thirty spellings, and what the damaged ones add

The union used on this page is thirty forms. The full names and the inverted form account for most of it; the rest are damage shapes taken from the index’s own sender column and tested one by one. The whole H is lost in some of them - eve anson, tep en anson - and Hanson truncates to Hanso in a field-label slot across 228 documents.8

Two of the damage shapes carry material no spelling of the full name reaches. Steve Hansen, with an e, is how the pilot Larry Visoski wrote the name in his own messages to Epstein about aircraft for sale, how a message to the New York house manager spells it, and how this project’s flight index transcribes it on four of its five rows. It returns 50 documents, 37 of which no other form on this page reaches.32 And sieve hanson - 21 documents - is the shape Epstein’s own extraction produces for his hurried lower-case steve hanson in office notes.33

The bare surname was not mined. Hanson alone returns 8,264 documents and is a common name; 1,059 of them fall outside this page’s union, and they include an academic, a chief executive of an unrelated firm, a hospitality consultant quoted in a press clipping, and the robotics company. The one surname-only form that was admitted is Mr Hanson, 124 documents, whose bearer was checked: of the nineteen it adds, eighteen are house-staff logs and vendor correspondence addressed to him and one is a press clipping about a different Hanson.34

What he did for Epstein

He recruited Epstein’s household staff. On 12 August 2011 Epstein’s office asked him to find a chef. His replies are a working recruiter’s:12

In December 2012 he was running the search for a general manager of Little St. James through a private-staffing agency in Milwaukee. The agency’s consultant sent him seven questions; they were passed on from his own office over his name. Two of them show where he sat in the arrangement:13

  1. Current staff in place, 17-20 (Steve mentioned). Do you have breakdown of job titles etc?
  1. Who will interview our candidates on behalf of JE?

On Christmas Day 2012 Epstein wrote to him about the post in one sentence:35

new gm will have to get his hands dirty, not merely oversee.

By the end of January 2013 he was vetting the placement terms themselves. Epstein’s office told Epstein that Hanson had looked over a document from a yacht-and-estate crewing agency covering placements on Little St. James, and said it was good to show him; the agency’s own revised terms were attached.14 A separate run of letters from the same agency is addressed Dear Mr. Hanson.36 The candidates named in that correspondence are private individuals and are not named here.

The smaller errands run continuously. He sent plates, cutlery and cutting boards to Epstein’s New York house in March 2012.37 He collected Epstein from a Hamptons airport.38 In December 2013 he ordered food down to Palm Beach ahead of a visit.39 In April 2016 he offered to pick up electric candles.40 On Thanksgiving 2017 he asked whether to bring turkey.41 Epstein, in December 2012, recorded a different kind of errand in one line to a correspondent:42

Epstein used him as a second opinion on business. In May 2013 Epstein sent him a trading proposition to look at, and he answered on the merits:43

risk management is the KEY. How large can u scale the traders is the question

And he was in the diary. Epstein’s office schedules carry appointments with him from 2011 to 2019 - a Palm Beach appointment at 2pm on 25 January 2014, between a Skype call with Reid Hoffman and an appointment with Ehud Barak;44 an 11:30am appointment on 6 May 2019, the morning of a filming session at the New York house.45 In July 2015 a legal assistant at Darren Indyke’s firm sent Epstein a message whose entire subject line was Steve Hansen is here to see you! - the third professional in Epstein’s own orbit to spell it that way.46

BR Guest, Starwood, and a partnership that ended badly

The business story runs on paper, and each document cited in this section is in the released files.

The 2007 agreement. An employment agreement dated 23 February 2007 between elevenseven Holdings, L.L.C. and Stephen P. Hanson (the "Executive") provides that he shall serve as Chief Executive Officer and President of the Company and shall be the most senior officer of the Company, reporting exclusively to a Management Committee. The parties to the governing LLC agreement include B R Guest, Inc. and SOF U.S. Restaurant Co-Invest Holdings, L.L.C. - the Starwood Capital vehicle.3

The 2012 memorandum. On 9 October 2012 he wrote ten sheets to Barry Sternlicht under the heading Just Some Thoughts. It is the fullest account of the partnership in his own voice anywhere in the release:15

I accepted the $10 million in notes as a courtesy to you!

I will lose most, if not all, of the $57+ million of capital I left in BRG when SCG became my partner. The $57+ million was my money; your loss, while unpleasant, was that of your investors, not you.

As to the budget, I agree; we have not met budget in any year we have been partners.

You have no grounds to fire me; thus, you get no credit for not doing so.

The memorandum names the losses one by one, including Kibo was a $3.4 million loss for which, as president of BRG, I take responsibility, but you assisted in creating the loss.15 It offers, in terms, to go: Please let me know if you wish to discuss termination of my employment and my exit, after which you would own 100% of BRG.15

The termination, a year later. On 30 October 2013 Starwood served a Notice of BRG Trigger Event asserting that the company had terminated his employment for Cause and that all BRG Representatives are automatically and hereby removed. On 1 November his lawyers answered:16

the Company’s decision to terminate Mr. Nathan’s employment for Cause, without providing him an opportunity to cure his alleged misconduct, is devoid of legal or factual support, breached the plain terms of the Hanson Employment Agreement, and is a legal nullity.

Mr. Nathan's is what the letter prints. The page image was rendered for this page and the paper says it too, so it is the instrument’s own text and not a fault of the released extraction. The sentence that disputes his dismissal names a different man, and no document read for this page explains who that is.47 The same letter demands that Starwood act to reinstate Mr. Hanson as the Company's Chief Executive Officer and President.16 Three days later Starwood notified both of his holding companies that Dan Yih is hereby hired as the interim CFO of the Company, effective immediately.30

December 2013, and Epstein is in the room. On the evening of Sunday 8 December Sternlicht wrote to him:29

Our cash basis in BRGUEST is now $128 million!!! You really should be ashamed of yourself demanding more money to behave after we have been friggin idyllic partners for 7 years and will lose a fortune. Amazing chutzpah.

Within hours the message had been forwarded to Epstein and to Hanson’s lawyer, with a one-line covering note saying he would answer in the morning.29 Nine days later a second letter from Sternlicht reached the same two addressees:48

My goal in our divorce was to ensure that we could not be further embaressed/humiliated after we split. After all, with the 128m we have invested, paying another 2m and having you work against our interest would be, at best, embarrassing and I cannot let happen.

One quick question for you is liquor licenses. I presume they are mostly in your name. Will we be able to keep these licenses in every BRG outlet? I see u are walking from every document.

He told Epstein it was over on 22 December 2013, in five words at the end of a message about a laptop: Retired. Not feeling it yet.49

The money, six months later - and the memorandum says so itself. On 26 June 2014 he sent a one-page memorandum to Sternlicht and Yih:17

Six (6) months have flown by and the term of my covenants will soon expire. I have honored my commitment to BR Guest and will continue to do so through the end of the covenant period. Pursuant to the Separation and Mutual Release Agreement, I am requesting payment of $500,000 be made on July 1, 2014.

It closes: Sorry I missed you in Florida, but I hope to see you in Nantucket this summer.17 The payment instruction that follows directs the money to his lawyers’ attorney trust account. No part of that instruction is reproduced here.

A hotel, a restaurant, and Epstein’s exit

After BR Guest, Hanson and Epstein were in business together. The documents read for this page do not give the venture a corporate name, and none is supplied; what they give is a hotel that had to be sold, a restaurant that opened late and lost money, and a third party Epstein calls david.

That david is David Mitchell of Mitchell Holdings, and one sheet settles it. At 10:19 on the morning of 6 November 2017 Epstein asked Hanson are you going to the hotel . david is waiting. you ok?; Hanson answered At lawyers five minutes later; and at 3:25 that afternoon Epstein forwarded Hanson’s answer, with his own question quoted beneath it, to David Mitchell.50 The day before, Mitchell had sent Epstein a message of Hanson’s addressed to him by name and copied to Hanson’s lawyer.51

The earliest piece is from September 2016, before the restaurant existed. Forwarding a set of hotel projections to Epstein, Hanson wrote:52

Punch line for me is I knew davids $ was bs +high on hotel so I low balled the restaurant - so we can actually meet these net $ projections

By October 2017 he was asking Epstein to hold Mitchell steady:53

Just keep talking him off the ledge Ever get restaurant and lobby complete - we have a great shot

Epstein’s answer was a sentence and a word: David has to choose his own debt levels. sad.53 Sixteen days later Hanson was At lawyers, and reported that he had Gave david an outline of cash needed.54 His message to Mitchell of the previous afternoon put it plainly:51

Let’s let the lawyers take over - I’ll try to see howie Monday

You have massive amounts of detail you have had for months -

Mitchell’s reply to him, quoted beneath it on the same sheet, reads I think you misunderstood what is being asked for and why this is a requirement , not as you call it a stall.51

January 2018: the opening. The restaurant had opened late, and the two men argued about how late:55

Yes was to open by nov lack of payment stopped construction for a total of 8 weeks

They are not out of the range of a Hot restaurant

Epstein: It was four weeks longer . Not 8 and the projections are not even close with weather season or others .55

7 April 2018: Epstein withdraws. The thread runs through a Saturday morning under the subject im not involved /. Hanson first:1

There is zero communication on what’s going on with sale - like to help but have zero ability

Then FYI the partners have asked for a audit, and then:1

Threading to quit - I have said we are out of money and need to close what do you do when your out of money

Epstein set out what he had heard and what he had spent:1

one potential said that it appears the restaurant monies have no oversight , and have been threatened with you quitting repeatedly. I really want to stay out as both of you are friends. and no matter what will alwasy be. .

I have ignored the valuation guys questions. as they are too provocative. the benefit of spending over 600k . since dec. . nothing to show for it.. 200k per month of revenue - half of projections not off 10 , 20 or 30 percent. . .but 50 .

His last message in the thread is three words:1

sorry , im out.

It was not over. In November 2018 Hanson was still chasing the hotel’s sale. A message of his of 2 November, carried inside a reply to Epstein the next day, reads I know you said you are working on the sale of the hotel - but you have not sent the requested information; David Mitchell is among the names on that message. Asked by Epstein the following day whether a peace between them had held, he answered Not at all not true have him send you the e mail - I'm having big issues with 24 others.56

Named in the 2017 will, removed from the two that followed it, and named in the trust signed two days before the death

A will executed in June 2017 appoints Darren K. Indyke, Richard D. Kahn and Terje Rod-Larsen as Executors and provides that if any of them cannot serve, I appoint EVA ANDERSSON DUBIN, as successor Executor, followed by KATHRYN RUEMMLER, as successor Executor, followed by STEPHEN HANSON, as successor Executor.19 The day of the month is not legible in the released text of that instrument and no day is supplied here.

The sheet that carries that clause is struck through. On the copy cited here, the first sheet - the sheet on which the appointment clause stands - carries, in freehand ink across the face of the text, the word REVOKED and a large X stroke. It was read at the page image for this page; the typed clause beneath the ink is fully legible and is quoted above exactly as it stands. Nothing read for this page says who marked the sheet, or when. It records what the sheet carries.19

That will did not stand. Epstein executed a further will on 8 May 2018 and another on 18 January 2019. Each declares itself made hereby revoking all prior Wills and Codicils made by me, and neither names Stephen Hanson in any form. In both, the Executors are Darren K. Indyke and Richard D. Kahn and the sole successor Executor is KATHRYN H. RUEMMLER; the chain through Eva Andersson Dubin and Hanson is gone. The May 2018 will bears the same date as the 2018 Trust he is also absent from. Nothing read for this page explains either removal.18

A trust agreement dated January 2017 names him in the same position one step down: after Ruemmler, thereafter STEPHEN HANSON shall next be appointed to fill any vacancy.20

He is absent from the next instrument. The Jeffrey E. Epstein 2018 Trust of 8 May 2018 contains no occurrence of the surname in any form, in either released copy.22

And then he is back, in the last one. The 1953 Trust, made as of August 8, 2019 - two days before the date of Epstein’s death - restates the 2019 Trust and sets out a chain of seven successor trustees at Article VI §6.1. Read at the page image:21

If DAVID MITCHELL is unwilling or unable to serve, then STEVE HANSON shall be appointed to fill such vacancy. If STEVE HANSON is unwilling or unable to serve, then EVA DUBIN shall be appointed to fill such vacancy

He is sixth of seven, after Boris Nikolic, Barnaby Marsh, Anthony Barrett, KATHY REUMMLER as that sheet spells it, and David Mitchell, and before Eva Dubin.21

Being named is not an appointment. The same article makes a successor’s appointment effective only when such successor Trustee signs an acceptance of the trust, and no acceptance signed by him is in the files read for this page. He is a name in a chain that would have had to run through five people before reaching him.

Two gaps in that timeline are worth naming. Between the $500,000 memorandum of June 2014 and the hotel projections of September 2016 the personal correspondence continues but the business record read for this page is silent; nothing read here says what he did for those two years. And the 2018 Trust sits between a will that names him and a trust that names him again, naming him in neither - this page records the sequence and does not explain it.

What this page does not establish

This page is built on 68 documents read in full out of a union of 7,968 - under one per cent. The other 7,900 were measured, screened and sampled, not read. No sentence here rests on a document that was not opened.59

It makes no allegation against him and records none. It does not cover any document whose subject is a complainant or a survivor. Several documents in his correspondence carry medical or family detail about private individuals; they are not cited, quoted or described here, and the page is silent about their contents. The number of distinct messages behind the 2,817 sender documents is not stated, because two attempts to measure it failed their own controls and the result is reported as no result rather than as a figure.59

The sampling was four-part and reproducible: a seeded random sample of 40 drawn from the union in sorted order with seed 20261106 (sample md5 94ac86735d332c86a5a9a8d4d98c76fb); the documents at the extremes of the project’s own date field, including every outlier; the instruments and corporate letters that name him; and the documents reached only by the damaged spellings. Ten page images across nine documents were rendered at the native 96 ppi of the route that serves them, eight of those documents being cited here, and nothing is certified from an image that was not rendered. No claim on this page rests on a document that was not opened. Every quoted span on this page was re-extracted from the file as it stands after the last edit and put to the released index: the spans that return no document at all are the four read at the page image which correct the extraction, the index’s own sender-field and document-type values quoted as such, and the spellings this page reports as returning nothing. No quoted span is unaccounted for. Two documents in the read sample were set aside and are not cited anywhere on this page, on the standing rule that governs them. A measurement of how many distinct messages lie behind the 2,817 sender documents was attempted twice and failed its own control both times - a known pair of duplicate sheets did not collapse to one key - so no figure for distinct messages, and no figure for the share of short messages, is given here.
