Karyna Shuliak appears throughout the released Epstein files as the person who told tradesmen, vendors and property managers what Jeffrey Epstein wanted done to his buildings. Most of the documents gathered here are her own outbound messages: an instruction, addressed to the man Epstein wanted to do it, that a mobile-signal unit be installed in a kitchen; a request that painters be scheduled for one of his apartments; a drawing sent out with the finish specified; a demand that every step of a storage build on Great St James be reported to her and every purchase cleared with her first; a furniture and statuary order placed with vendors in Bali and chased through deposit, quote, customs paperwork and sailing date; and a decision on cabana countertops carried from a correspondent on the islands to Epstein and back again. Nothing on this page is a finding of wrongdoing.

What this page covers, and what it does not

Four pages already published on this wiki carry parts of her documented activity, and this page does not repeat them. Dental office on Little Saint James holds the dental story whole: the equipment orders, the chasing, the form of address “Dr. Shuliak”, her Virgin Islands dental licence, and the island room list she received from Ann Rodriquez. Tom Pritzker holds an April 2018 trip on which she was the traveller and on which his assistant undertook to work with her on the reservations. Kathryn Ruemmler carries an incidental mention of her. Vitaly Churkin carries a document that bears on this page’s subject directly: on 7 October 2016 Lesley Groff wrote to her, “Morning Karyna. Jeffrey would like you to be in charge of the important lunch today”, naming Peter Thiel and Churkin as the guests, and she answered, “Yes, thanks Lesley!” It is Epstein’s wish relayed by Groff rather than Groff’s own instruction: Groff had asked him “Who to organize?”, his answer was one word, her forename, and Groff forwarded that answer to her along with the instruction. That is the relay shape the messages set out below run in, pointed towards her instead of outward from her. The exchange is set out on the Churkin page and is not among the twenty documents cited here.

This page is about a different body of correspondence: what she sent outward, to people who were being asked to do work.

Identification, and the size of the file

A search of the corpus index for the phrase “Karyna Shuliak” returns 35,274 pages across 31,255 documents, all of them in the EFTA production; the surname alone returns 44,883 pages and the forename alone 52,400. A rival spelling does exist: the same index returns 1,131 pages for “Shulia” and 676 for “Karyna Shulia”. The variants searched were “Karyna Shuliak”, “Shuliak”, “Karyna”, “Karyna Shulia” and “Shulia”. Unlike the q-and-g problem on Ann Rodriquez’s page, where the release’s own spelling is the unexpected one and a search on the other form returns about one and a half per cent of her, the dominant form here is the obvious one, and the shorter variant accounts for about two and a half per cent of the surname’s volume. The volume means that finding her name on a sheet establishes almost nothing on its own. Of the twenty documents cited below, seventeen are messages sent out under her name, one is a reply addressed to her, and two are disbursement spreadsheets rather than messages.

Her sign-off varies between “Karyna” and “Karyna.” with a full stop. The shorter form “Shulia” is not on any document cited here: a whitespace-normalised search of the text layer of all twenty for any word beginning “Shuli” returns thirty-three matches, and every one of them is “Shuliak”.

Instructions to trades at the New York properties, 2013–2019

The earliest document cited here is from March 2013. Writing to Scott Denett, she gave an instruction and named its source: “Mr. Epstein is asking that you please install the MCELL in the kitchen on the ground floor, currently there is no AT&T service in the kitchen area. He would like you to do it on Monday if possible please.” The sheet’s subject field is empty, not blacked out but simply blank, and both parties’ addresses are covered by the producing party.1 Denett answered the same day, in short paragraphs separated by blank lines on the sheet: “Please tell JE”, then “I WILL BE THERE MON AROUND 11am”, then “Thx you scott”. She replied, “Thank you Scott, I will do.”8 The two sheets together date the exchange: the header on each is stamped in UTC, and her quoted message is timestamped 12:56 PM in the reply, which places the original at midday in New York.

The pattern of the March 2013 message, an instruction issued in her own words with Epstein named as its author, recurs. In May 2014 she wrote to Richard Kahn and a second recipient whose name the producing party has blacked out, copying Erin Cunningham. She named the instruction’s source: “Erin would like to meet with the painters to discuss the work for my apartment (8H). Jeffrey said we should use our painters (he said Michael will be back on Monday)and he wants me to coordinate with you. Can we arrange some time next week please?” A name in the greeting of that message is blacked out on the image and is not supplied here.9

In May 2016 she sent Janusz Banasiak a drawing with dimensions: “We need 2 shelves like that in white lacquer (high gloss) finish. As for the distance between them, I can not tell for sure right now, but they can start making the shelves anyway and I can tell that distance later before they install it. Let me know if you have any questions and keep me posted once you see the carpenter.” The message names an inline image in its header field; the drawing itself does not print on the released sheet, which carries a broken-image placeholder where it sat.3

In October 2017 she followed up a repair with Merwin Dela Cruz: “I understand you had a contractor at the house last week trying to fix the leak from the ceiling in the catering kitchen. Was he able to resolve the issue?” He answered “Yes.” and she wrote back, “Great! Thank you very much.” The exchange runs on 16 October in New York local time; the top-of-thread header is stamped 03:02:03 UTC on the 17th. One recipient’s name on that sheet is blacked out.10

Through the summer of 2018 she chased a floor repair in one of the apartments with Anthony Barrett. The thread on the sheet runs from 21 June to 23 July 2018. On 21 June she wrote, “Just wanted to follow-up if you received my email this morning about the floor issue in 3M?”; Barrett asked for building access for the floor contractor on the 27th; she answered, “I can not reach her either. Leo could you please let Anthony in?”, and Barrett reported back that “i reached her - the contractor came in and will order the wood. He did not give me a date yet,but will schedule with” (a redaction follows on the image) “directly.” On 23 July she was still asking: “Just wanted to follow-up… Do you have a date scheduled for it yet?” Two names inside the quoted body of that thread are blacked out on the image and are not supplied here.4

The island projects: supervision, specification, and the principal’s decision

In September 2016 she wrote to Ann Rodriquez about a storage building on Great St James and a housekeeping renovation on Little Saint James, and set out what she required:

I need you to communicate with me each step that is being done with the GSJ storage please and send me pictures. What are the guys working on right now? Did Mr. Epstein advice on where to install the staff bathroom? All the purchased for that storage should be reviewed with me before you buy them.

She added, “Regarding the LSJ housekeeping renovation, I also need to see pictures please. What is being done there at the moment?”5

In August 2018 the same relationship runs in the other direction, with her carrying a technical objection up and a decision back down. A correspondent writing from an account named for the two islands reported that “Ken (granite installer) who just installed STC countertops has noted that the selected material is brittle and has a tendency to crack”, and asked whether the same material and colour as another building would be acceptable. She checked her understanding, asking “are you talking about the countertop material that we selected for the cabanas, the nice thick off white sample that Brice had, that we all liked, is brittle? and the one at STC is ok?”, was told “Local word is we should go with what STC is using”, and then answered: “I passed the message to Jeffrey, he still wants to proceed with the granite we chose initially please.” The exchange runs across 10 August 2018 in island local time, with the header on her closing message stamped 02:23:20 UTC on the 11th.6

Later that month she asked Daphne Wallace to book rooms in St Thomas: “Mr. Epstein needs your help please with arranging an accommodation in St. Thomas for two architects who are coming to the island. They will be staying for 2 nights… Could you please reserve the nicest option that is available?” One recipient of that message is blacked out.11

In March 2018 she put a name to Epstein for the island’s landscaping, sending him a magazine link and then asking: “Would it be possible to hire Madison Cox to do the landscaping for the island?” Epstein replied the following morning in four words: “i met with him.”1213 His answer records a prior meeting, so the message was a suggestion rather than an introduction; the documents read for this page do not record whether anything followed from it. Disbursement sheets in the release appear to carry the name beside a property heading in entries dated years before 2018, which would put the designer in the office’s records already, but those sheets are UNVERIFIED, from a search hit: they were not read at the image, and nothing on this page rests on them.14

The Bali order, May to June 2018

The most fully documented sequence in this page’s material is a furniture and statuary order placed in Bali for Little Saint James. On 3 May 2018 she circulated the proposal to Bella Klein, Richard Kahn, Daphne Wallace and Paola Rengifo, and she set out the commercial risk in her own words rather than a purchasing department’s:

I have found some furniture and wood statues in Bali, that Mr. Epstein would like to order for the island. Please note, these are not the kind of stores we would normally deal with. It is quite disorganized, prices are negotiated, and sometimes, as I was told by Mr.Epstein, the items might just never arrive (hopefully this won’t happen). I have done my best to put all the information together. I assume the invoices might need to be changed.

She directed the work onward, writing “Paola, Mr. Epstein would like to to arrange the shipping. Please work with Daphne, Bella and Rich on that”, and closed, “Please let me know how I can help.” Five days later she pressed for money: “Please let’s have the remaining deposits paid. The vendors keep asking me. Paola, do you have any updates on the shipping?”2

Both answers came the same day. Rengifo, whose signature block on the sheet gives her title as “Senior Design Associate”, wrote: “Yes, i spoke with all of them (except Benny Bob- He hasn’t answered yet). They are waiting for payment and will give me the information for shipment/cargo information.” Klein wrote: “I will send 2 wires today 50% deposit to Miroku and Nikini Art.”15

On 21 May she wrote directly to Benedictus Banamtuan in Bali, copying the same four colleagues: “Paola has informed me, that you are arranging the shipping of the furniture and statues. Please send us the quote for review. We need to arrange the shipping date ASAP. How much longer do you need to finish producing the tables we ordered? Please advice.” She added a postscript explaining the distribution list: “I have copied our team in this email, so that we all are on the same page.”16

On 20 June she reported completion and assigned the remaining tasks: “Benny has informed me that all the furniture and statues has been picked up and are ready to be shipped. Daphne, could you please kindly follow up with Benny to insure all the paperwork for shipping and customs is in order? Benny, I understand that everything will be shipped after the holidays, that end this week. Could you please provide the exact date?” Two recipient names on that sheet are blacked out by the producing party.17

Travel administration

One document cited here places her in the office’s travel chain in October 2013, four and a half years before the April 2018 trip covered on Tom Pritzker’s page, and it is a different trip with a different traveller. On 18 October 2013 she forwarded an American Express Centurion Travel confirmation to Lesley Groff and to Epstein, copying Bella Klein. The confirmation is headed “Travel arrangements for JEFFREY E EPSTEIN traveling on 10/26/2013” and gives him as the traveller. It sets out two flights, not one. The first is a United Airlines service from Newark to St Thomas on 26 October; its block runs across the page break, and at the top of printed p.2, after that flight’s arrival date and time, the sheet prints “SERVICE IMMEDIATELY ABOVE IS WAITLISTED”. The second, printed below that line, is an American Airlines service from New York JFK to St Thomas on 27 October, with a seat assigned against it and no such line under it. She is the relay, not the traveller and not the booker: the confirmation was issued by the travel service, and she passed it on. The booking reference codes printed on these sheets are not reproduced here.18

Her own account of what she was and was not in charge of

The clearest statement of her position in the record is one she made herself, and it cuts against the picture the rest of this page builds. On 28 June 2019 Richard Kahn wrote to her: “Merwin says that you are in charge of painters at 71st / Do we have a quote / invoice for work? / Who will be directing them while you are away? / Please advise”. She answered:

Hi Rich, I am not in charge of this project. Jean (from Pinto’s office) has texted me once asking if the painters could start on Monday, June 24th. I asked Jeffrey, he said yes, I told Merwin. That is all I know. Would you like me to ask Jeffrey?

Kahn’s reply closed it: “if pinto is involved then i assume they are overseeing..so no need to bother jee”. Kahn’s signature block carries his name, HBRK Associates Inc. and its Lexington Avenue office address as printed type; his three telephone lines are blacked out.7

That answer describes the mechanism the rest of the documents show working: a question arrives from a trade or a manager, she puts it to Epstein, and she relays his answer onward. It is also the account she gave when a colleague attributed authority to her, and it should be read beside the messages above rather than instead of them.

A second document shows that expectation running the other way, with someone writing from one of Epstein’s other properties treating her as the person who would fill a gap in the mechanism. In June 2017 she asked a correspondent at Zorro Management LLC, whose signature block gives an address at Epstein’s New Mexico ranch, to come to New York “to help us with the house organizing as we spoke”. The reply set out the ranch’s own work schedule, reported that “since JE has approved the renovation of the staff cottage, even thought we have had no direction from Rich, we are moving forward”, and told her: “The NYC house will need to have someone ‘in charge’ if changes are to be made, hoping that you are moving forward with looking for someone that fits this position”. She answered, “Of course, I understand. I will talk to Mr. Epstein about other possible dates.” The correspondent’s name is blacked out on this sheet at every point it appears, and no name is supplied here; the company’s own signature block prints in the clear.19
