Gary Kenneth King (born September 29, 1954)1 is an American lawyer and Democratic politician who served in the New Mexico House of Representatives from 1986 to 1998, was Attorney General of New Mexico from January 1, 2007 to January 1, 2015, and was his party’s nominee for governor in 2014.125 He is the son of Bruce King, the three-term governor who, with his brothers, sold Jeffrey Epstein the ranch that became Zorro Ranch in 1993.7 Epstein, and people and companies associated with him, contributed to King’s campaigns for Congress in 2004, for attorney general in 2005 and 2006, and for governor in 2014.39 King’s office arranged a meeting with Epstein in Santa Fe for August 28, 2010, which King later told Reuters took place, nine days after the state’s Department of Public Safety told Epstein that he was not required to register as a sex offender under New Mexico law, while adding that he might be required to register under federal law while he resided temporarily in New Mexico,10118 and in September 2014 he flew to Washington with his running mate on a charter arranged through Epstein’s staff and paid for by his campaign.121314 New Mexico’s Survivors’ Truth Commission reported in August 2026 that it had found no evidence, to that date, that King took any action concerning Epstein as attorney general.2

The King family and Zorro Ranch

The 1993 sale

On March 1, 1993, Epstein acquired the property he would name Zorro Ranch from Governor Bruce King and his brothers Don and Sam King; then-Representative Rhonda King acted as realtor for the family.7 The purchase agreement, dated February 25, 1993, names the sellers as three King family entities: King Brothers Ranch, King Land & Cattle Company and Pine Canyon Ranch, Inc.15 Epstein’s limited power of attorney for the closing was given to John J. Kelly, who served as U.S. Attorney for the District of New Mexico from 1993 to 2001.157 Gary King’s name does not appear on the sale papers in the released files, and whether he was personally a party is not established by them.15

Water and easements, 2002

A June 21, 2002 status report on Epstein’s properties records, under the heading “Water,” that “Godec agreed to easment. King agreed to easement,” in connection with a new water system; a September 6, 2002 weekly report to Epstein describes the ranch’s existing pipeline as “installed by the Kings.”1617 Neither report says which member of the King family is meant, and neither names Gary King.1617

The State Land Office, 2004–2006

The ranch includes state trust land held under agricultural lease GR-2122.18 On March 2, 2004 a State Land Office field report addressed to Jerry King, an assistant commissioner at the office, recorded that heavy machinery had been preparing a level pad for a caboose at the Comanche Gap and Creston petroglyph panel sites inside the ranch; the report found no documented evidence of theft of or damage to the archaeological resources, and said the inspectors could not definitively place the site on state trust land.18 A June 8, 2004 letter to Epstein enclosing an approved improvement application, on which “the Commissioner has chosen to grant you 25% of the value for the improvement,” named Jerry King as a contact and is signed over the office’s Surface Resources Division, which was Jerry King’s own division as assistant commissioner in 2004; the routing of both documents to him was accordingly ordinary line supervision rather than a special assignment.18 In April 2006 the ranch manager submitted sublease applications for two state leases, GR-2088 and GR-2122.19 Gary King is not named in any of these State Land Office records.1819 Jerry King is Gary King’s first cousin,20 the son of Bruce King’s brother Don King and so Bruce King’s nephew;21 the Santa Fe New Mexican reported in 2026 that the released files “don’t allege Jerry King was operating in any capacity beyond his professional role.”21

Contributions from Epstein and associates

2004, U.S. House

Federal Election Commission records for King for Congress (committee C00393702) show contributions of the $2,000 legal maximum, twice each, from Jeffrey Epstein (June 22, 2004, listed as “retired,” St. Thomas), Darren Indyke (August 24) and Ghislaine Maxwell (September 1, listed as “retired,” St. Thomas), and a single $2,000 contribution from Eric Gany, whose employer is given in the filing as NY Strategy Group LLC (August 31).3 A separate record in Epstein’s files states that Gany worked for him.22

2005–2006, Attorney General

State records show two contributions from Epstein personally to King’s attorney general campaign: $10,000 on December 5, 2005, from 457 Madison Avenue, New York, and $5,000 on June 19, 2006, from 6100 Red Hook Quarters, St. Thomas.9 After Epstein’s Florida indictment became public in August 2006, King told the Santa Fe New Mexican he planned to return the $15,000 “to avoid any appearance of impropriety,” and said, “I don’t think I’ve ever met him personally. He knows other members of my family better.”23 In September 2014 the same newspaper reported the $15,000 as having come from “an Epstein company called The Zorro Trust”; the state contribution records name Epstein himself as the contributor on both entries.249 In March 2026 King told Reuters he had not returned the money, because in 2006 he was not aware of any reports of wrongdoing by Epstein.8 State records for the 2009–2010 attorney general campaign contain no contribution from Epstein or his associates.9

2014, Governor

King won the Democratic primary on June 3, 2014.5 On June 5 Epstein wrote to his assistant, “i would like to speak to gary king today”; she reported back that she had spoken with King’s assistant, and that afternoon the campaign emailed a letter addressed to Epstein over King’s signature: “Thank you for the opportunity to speak with you today … I also want to thank you for your personal commitment to raise $50,000.00 for my campaign.”2526 A version dated June 13, re-addressed “C/O Darrin Indyke,” added that under New Mexico campaign finance law individuals, PACs and corporations could give up to $5,200 per election cycle and that “Each separate corporation is considered to be a separate giver and can give up to the maximum allowed, as long as the entity was not formed solely for the purpose of giving.”27 On June 17 Epstein’s lawyer Darren Indyke emailed him a copy of the issues page from King’s campaign website, headed “CRIMES AGAINST CHILDREN,” and asked, “As the issues highlighted below appear to be part of Gary’s platform, do you risk additional news coverage regarding his accepting of your contributions?” Epstein replied, “good catch, lets use co s or trusts.”28 That evening the campaign sent the letter a third time under the subject “Information on PAC contributions,” and it was forwarded to Indyke and Richard Kahn the following morning.2930 King told Reuters in 2026 that he had personally told Epstein the campaign would not accept contributions from him; none of his recorded statements set out below addresses the corporate-giving passage in the letters sent over his signature.8

The seven contributions from companies at 6100 Red Hook Quarter, St. Thomas, total $35,600; with the Indyke and HBRK contributions the total is $46,000.93133 The Daily Beast reported the Indyke and HBRK contributions in 2019.35

On September 9, 2014 the Santa Fe New Mexican reported that King had received more than $35,000 from businesses at an address in the U.S. Virgin Islands listed for Epstein on the New York sex offender registry, naming JEGE LLC, Maple Inc., FT Real Estate, Laurel Inc., Nautilus Inc. and Neptune LLC; a campaign spokesman told the paper, “If anything is found to be improper about any contribution, they will be returned or donated to charity.”24 The Associated Press reported that King’s campaign was returning the money, put the total at $35,600 from six companies with Virgin Islands addresses, and reported King as saying in a statement that his fundraising staff had missed the connection between the contributions and Epstein.36 Barry Massey of the Associated Press had telephoned for Epstein on September 9; the message was passed to him by Cecile de Jongh.37 A fact-check dated September 3, 2026 read the campaign’s next filing directly and recorded seven “Refunded Contribution” entries dated September 12 totaling $35,600.14 Two of those refunds are in the released files as consecutively numbered checks, both drawn on the “Gary King 2014” account at Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., New Mexico, both dated September 12, 2014, both for $5,000, and both posted by First Bank in the Virgin Islands on October 27, 2014: check #1631 to Laurel, Inc. and check #1632 to Nautilus, Inc.3839 The same fact-check found no refund to Indyke or to HBRK Associates recorded in the campaign’s October 14 or October 30 filings.1440 King lost the November 4 election to Susana Martinez.5

The August 2010 meeting

On July 23, 2010, the New Mexico Department of Public Safety wrote to Epstein that it had been notified by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement that he was a convicted sex offender who met the requirement to register in New Mexico, and that failure to comply with the Sex Offender Registration and Notification Act would result in a fourth-degree felony.41 His lawyer replied on July 27 that he did not read the Florida offense of procuring a person under 18 for prostitution as falling within the offenses enumerated in the New Mexico act,42 but that Epstein would register with New Mexico local authorities to satisfy federal requirements.43 In a further letter on July 30 the lawyer recorded his understanding that the July 23 letter was a form letter sent to every offender about whom the state receives notice, that it did not reflect a determination that Epstein qualified under state law, and that Epstein “has only recently been released from service of his sentence and has not visited NM since his conviction in Florida.”44 On August 17 Epstein completed a New Mexico sex offender registration form describing him as a temporary New Mexico resident at Zorro Ranch.45 On August 19 the department wrote that “under the current NMSA 29-11A you are not required to register with the State of New Mexico at this time for your 2008 Florida conviction of Procuring Person Under 18 for Prostitution,” adding: “However, while you reside temporarily in New Mexico you may be required to register per Title I of the Adam Walsh Child Protection and Safety Act of 2006.”10 The Survivors’ Truth Commission concluded that Epstein was not convicted of any offense specified in the New Mexico statute but “would appear to have been subject to federal SORNA requirements.”46

On August 20 a staff member of the Attorney General’s office, writing from an nmag.gov address, set out for Epstein’s assistant “the arrangement we spoke about on the telephone just awhile ago”: “AG King can meet with Mr. Ebstein at 3:30 p.m. on August 28th,” at Jinja Bar and Bistro in Santa Fe’s De Vargas Shopping Center. A follow-up message gave King’s mobile number, which is redacted in the released copy.11 On August 26 King’s assistant telephoned Epstein’s office to move the meeting to 4:30 pm.47 Epstein’s aircraft flew Phoenix to Albuquerque on August 25, 2010 and Albuquerque to Teterboro on August 30, with Epstein listed on both manifests and the names of most other passengers redacted.4849 King told Reuters in 2026 that he met Epstein only once, at the restaurant, where “they drank tea and Epstein expressed his condolences after King’s father died,” and that they briefly discussed Epstein’s dealings with the Santa Fe Institute.8 King was re-elected attorney general on November 2, 2010.4 In May 2012 Indyke wrote to a detective in the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s Office that Epstein maintained a vacation home in the county that he “visits (albeit very infrequently),” and that Epstein had attempted to register with the sheriff to comply with federal requirements.50

The September 2014 charter

On August 21, 2014, an email to Epstein, whose sender is redacted in the released copy, reported that King had called, that “he was returning your call” but also wanted to speak with Epstein “about possibly using your plane” to get him from Santa Fe on the evening of September 8 to a breakfast in Washington on September 9, and that “he says he can pay for the fuel and landing/airport fees.”51 Epstein’s staff chartered a Hawker 800XP through JEGE LLC; on August 25 Epstein wrote to Richard Kahn and his pilot, “lets orgainze the jet for gary king he can pay 11.6 we can arrange to pay through two diffent entities 10 4.”52 The same morning a correspondent whose name is redacted supplied King’s office address, “Attorney General Gary King, 408 Galisteo Street, Villagra Building,” which is the address of the Attorney General’s office, and Richard Kahn replied, “i will take care of gary king office and $.”1353 The operator’s trip information sheet for September 8 lists King, running mate Deb Haaland, the campaign’s finance director Chris Khoury,26 and two others, on an 8 p.m. departure from Santa Fe Municipal to Dulles; the same fact-check recorded the campaign’s filing reporting payment of $22,060.90 to the operator on September 5.1214

In the same weeks, Secretary of State Dianna Duran ordered King to forfeit $10,900 in post-primary contributions ($10,400 from a Taos couple and $500 too much from a Santa Fe retiree) as exceeding the $5,200 primary limit; King sued in the state Supreme Court on August 4, and on August 14 Duran reversed herself and allowed him to keep the money on conditions.5455 That dispute concerned individual New Mexico donors and did not involve Epstein or any company connected to him.5455 See the charter flight.

  • February 2026, to KOB: “The campaign leased a plane that we needed, and we paid fair market value for it. I found out two days ago that it was a plane that belonged to Jeffrey.” He also said, “I talked to him once then and told him that I wouldn’t accept campaign contributions from him anymore.”57
  • March 2026, to Reuters: “I personally told Mr. Epstein that the campaign would NOT accept contributions from him as a result of his admitted criminal activities,” and “If I had known of Mr. Epstein’s involvement at the time, I would have asked my staff to use another charter company to conduct the flight.”8

Haaland’s spokesperson said in February 2026 that “Deb never had any interaction with him and the way in which the plane was chartered was never communicated to her.” That statement is about Haaland and is not a response by King.58

Official records

  • Survivors’ Truth Commission, August 2026. The interim report states that King “admits to having met with Epstein at his request for lunch” and that “the Commission, to date, has discovered no evidence that King took any action as Attorney General to investigate or prosecute Epstein.” It also records that King’s successor, Hector Balderas, initiated an investigation of Epstein, that it is not clear when it was opened, that “one account suggests” May 2019, and that “by July Balderas had deferred further investigation of Epstein and sex trafficking at Zorro Ranch at the request of SDNY.”2
  • Federal prosecutors, February 2020. A privilege-screening term list run for the Southern District of New York over the Epstein document set, a list otherwise made up of attorneys, law firms and firm email domains, included the proximity term “Gary w/2 King” and the firm name “Gary King Law.” The report records 151 documents with hits for the proximity term, which matches any occurrence of the two words within two words of each other and so also captures other members of the King family, and none for the firm name.59
  • Deutsche Bank, 2017. The bank’s due-diligence file on JEGE, LLC preserved the September 2014 Santa Fe New Mexican story as negative media.60
  • SDNY entity table. A table in the grand-jury production describes FT Real Estate and Laurel Inc. as entities that appear to be Epstein-controlled, citing the newspaper’s report of their contributions to King for FT Real Estate and referring back to it for the rest; Maple, Inc. and Nautilus, Inc. are described the same way on the following page.61
