On Saturday, August 28, 2010, Jeffrey Epstein met New Mexico Attorney General Gary King at a restaurant in the De Vargas Center in Santa Fe.1 The meeting came nine days after the Department of Public Safety wrote to Epstein that he was not required to register with New Mexico for his 2008 Florida conviction, but that he might be required to register under the federal Adam Walsh Act while residing temporarily in the state.2

How it was arranged

The meeting was set up through Epstein’s own office, and the three scheduling documents show how. The thread carries the subject line “MEETNG WITH AG GARY KING IN SANTA FE”, as it is typed, and within it a message forwarded by Lesley Groff, timed “Tue, Aug 24, 2010 at 3:52 PM”; Epstein forwarded the whole chain, driving directions to the venue included, at 17:48 UTC on the morning of the meeting itself.1 Two days before it, a member of his staff wrote that “Gary Kings assistant called and said” King could meet him “this Saturday in Santa Fe at 4:30pm”, “not 3:30pm as was originally scheduled”, and that the address had been passed on so that the ground arrangements could be made; Epstein’s reply, the same day, is the single word “ok”.98 The staff on both sides are left as the messages leave them, by forename or not at all, and no one is identified here beyond the sender the sheet names in full.

This is a statement about who arranged the meeting and not about what either man did at it. Nothing cited here records what was said.189

Accounts

The Commission’s interim report records that King admits meeting Epstein at Epstein’s request for lunch,12 and he told Reuters in 2026 that they met once, for tea, and discussed condolences on his father’s death and the Santa Fe Institute.13 A search of the released files’ machine-read text for the phrase “gary king” returns 109 pages across 101 documents, most of them 2014 charter and campaign-contribution material unrelated to this meeting. That search is a floor rather than a count, because the machine-read text of these files is unreliable and misses pages whose names it cannot read. Restricted to messages dated in 2010, three scheduling documents remain, the three listed in the Sequence above. None of them records what was said at the meeting.
