Woodson C. Merrell is a New York physician who signed himself, in 2012, Director of the Continuum Center for Health and Healing and Chairman of the Department of Integrative Medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center, and who treated Jeffrey Epstein. Documents released under the Epstein Files Transparency Act record a correspondence running from at least August 2009 to at least December 2018 in which he wrote dated clinical instructions to Epstein on his own letterhead, prescribed for him, recorded a course of acupuncture done at his own office, referred him to named specialists, was invited to and accepted dinner at Epstein’s Manhattan house, sent Epstein a research funding application for a philanthropic foundation, thanked him for forwarding it and then chased him about it, and, four weeks after Epstein’s release from a Florida jail, wrote to him that the press coverage was “a hatchet job on you”.51910611

The earliest document read for this page is that message. On 17 August 2009 Merrell forwarded Epstein a Palm Beach Daily News report under the subject line “FW: Jeffrey Epstein released from jail; won’t have electronic monitoring device during year’s probation” and wrote, in a paragraph that quotes approvingly from an anonymous reader comment, “what were the families thinking while their daughters were running around the city doing who knows what”.5

The second thing the record documents is money for research. In October and November 2011 Merrell sent Epstein a Letter of Intent for a John Templeton Foundation grant and then asked him “did you get a chance to forward this to Mr. (? Sir) Templeton?”; in October 2015 he accepted an invitation to sit in on a meeting at Epstein’s house with a Harvard acupuncture researcher whom Epstein described as “coming to my house tomorrw at 1130 am to try to get me to fund trials”.1112

Nothing on this page is a finding of wrongdoing. No statement by Merrell about these documents has been located for this page, and no request for comment was made by this desk.

How far the record reaches, and how the name is spelled in it

Measured against the full-text index on 17 October 2026, as count(distinct efta_number) over text_content, the phrase “Woodson Merrell” returns 398 documents. That figure is the smallest of the useful ones and it is not this man’s record. The honorific form “Dr. Merrell” returns 1,151, of which 996 lie outside the full-name phrase entirely, because Epstein’s household almost never wrote his forename. The bare surname returns 1,719.13

Floor reached for this page: 1,735 documents. It is the union of twelve name and handle forms, his practice address, the damaged spellings enumerated below, and the household’s own misspelling of his surname. It is a floor and not a population.14

Five things in that arithmetic are worth stating because each of them hid documents:

  • The office address is a key in its own right. "44 East 67th Street" returns 329 documents and 33 of them lie outside every form of the name, the bare surname included. The practice is reachable where the man is not.14
  • The tokenizer collapses four of these forms into two queries, not four. unicode61 splits on ., , and @, so "Merrell, Woodson" and "Merrell Woodson" are the same search and both return 3, and the surname written with a trailing at-sign is simply the bare surname and returns 1,719. None of those pairs is corroboration of anything.13
  • Damaged spellings reach 23 documents the clean forms do not, and two of them carry the clearest statements on the page. Merell reaches an iMessage of August 2017 asking “Will be dr Merell and Dr. Magnani listed as my primary care and dental care doctors?” and a message of December 2010 in which Epstein tells a correspondent that “dr merell, has pulled a ligament”. Merrel reaches a message from Epstein of 28 March 2010 beginning “woody,, sultan is a great friend,,…”. The surname is not damaged on that sheet: at the image its addressee line carries his name spelled correctly, and merrel is the extraction’s rendering of a header line it has torn into fragments. Also productive: Merrel1 with a digit for the final letter, Mcrrell, Merrelll, and =errell, where quoted-printable encoding has eaten the capital M.15
  • Morrell is not him. The generator offers it at 77 documents and every one read is a different person or thing: FedEx delivery signatures, a Palm Beach attorney, and logged rounds at a federal detention centre. It is excluded.15
  • The household spelled his surname with an i, and that is not damage. The honorific phrase "Dr. Merrill" returns 142 documents, and "Dr Merrill" and "Dr merrill" return the same 142 because the tokenizer makes them one query. Every one of the 142 was read at its text layer for this page and five were read at the image; 18 of them print a correct spelling of his surname on the same sheet, and one of those prints both spellings of one appointment. 100 of the 142 lie outside every other component of the floor, which is the difference between 1,635 and the figure given above. The variant generator used for the damaged spellings does not offer this form, because the form is not a misreading: it is how the writers spelled the name.16

Homographs, named and subtracted. Of the 1,719 bare-surname documents, 142 lie outside the floor. Ninety-one of those fall in four named classes: 71 carry Daubert v. Merrell Dow Pharmaceuticals, the Supreme Court citation used throughout the Maxwell motions in limine; 5 are Merrill Lynch rendered Merrell Lynch; 3 are Richardson-Merrell, Inc. v. Koller; and 12 carry the name of another member of the Merrell family, who is not written about on this page. The remaining 51 are unassigned: they were classified mechanically from their text layer, not read at a sheet, and this page makes no claim about them.14 That 142 is not the 142 in the bullet above. The two sets share no document, and the equal figure is a coincidence of this corpus.14

What no method used here can reach. An appointment booked under somebody else’s name; a message that calls him “the doctor”; and a sheet that carries only his office staff or his pharmacy. The floor does not include those.

The practice

His letterhead, in the form used from 2010 to 2016, reads “WOODSON C. MERRELL, M.D. / 44 EAST 67th STREET / NEW YORK, NEW YORK 10065” over a telephone and fax block. The December 2018 letter adds “PLLC”. His office’s own signature block, used by a staff member writing to Epstein’s assistant in 2012, reads “Office of Woodson Merrell, MD / 44 East 67th Street / Suite 1B / New York, NY 10065”.123

He signs his e-mail “Woody” and his letters with his full name. Epstein’s household wrote to him as “Dr. Merrell” and “Dr. Woody Merrell”.617 It also wrote his surname with an i, and “Dr. Merrill” is not confined to one kind of document: it stands in Epstein’s own messages to his office, on the household’s day schedules and the calendar alerts fired from them, in a household contact list, and in his office’s dealings with the practice. The dated sheets among them run from June 2010 to March 2017. That form was not among the spellings searched when the arithmetic above was first built, and the floor given there now includes it.16

Two institutional descriptions of him appear on sheets read here, and they are seven years apart. In April 2012 he signed a circular to his own distribution list “Woodson C. Merrell, MD / Director, Continuum Center for Health and Healing / Chairman / Department of Integrative Medicine / Beth Israel Medical Center”.4 In December 2018 the signature block on his letterhead reads “Assistant Professor of Medicine / Mt Sinai School of Medicine” and “Attending Physician / Department of Medicine / Mt Sinai West Hospital”.2 Both are his own statements of his position; this page does not reconcile them and does not assert which offices he held when.

August 2009: “the main article is a hatchet job on you”

On Monday 17 August 2009 Merrell forwarded Epstein a newspaper report of his release from jail and wrote, in full:

Jeffrey, Hello. You may not be reading any of the diatribes that are being spewed out. I saw this. The main article is a hatchet job on you. But there is a comment (the first one following the article) from “Watch Your Kids” that strikes a chord (and she doesn’t address the issue at all of what you did or didn’t do): what were the families thinking while their daughters were running around the city doing who knows what (and even sometimes with their family knowing they were doing things that couldput them in a compromising situation---and condoning it). I am happy for you that you have more freedom now. I know it will happen best when you can get out of Florida. Enjoy the rest of summer, Woody

The sheet prints “couldput” as one word and “chord” where “cord” might be expected; neither is repaired here. The message carries the article’s headline as its subject line, and below Merrell’s text the sheet reproduces a newspaper “email this” widget carrying the word “FYI.” and the headline as a link. The second sheet of the run prints the article’s own web address, whose date path places the report in July 2009, about four weeks before Merrell wrote.5

Epstein answered the same evening. His whole reply is one line: “i’m fine.. this stuff no longer gets to me”.18

Two things in that paragraph are the document’s and not this page’s. The parenthesis “and she doesn’t address the issue at all of what you did or didn’t do” is Merrell’s own qualification of the comment he is passing on, and it is quoted here because it is on the sheet. And the view about “the families” is given as the commenter’s, endorsed by Merrell in the words “strikes a chord”. The sentence that follows carries no qualification at all.

September 2010: the break-fast

On Friday 17 September 2010 Groff asked a member of Merrell’s office staff to “pass along the below invite to Dr. Merrell”. The invitation read: “Jeffrey Epstein is hosting a Yom Kippur Breaking of the Fast dinner at his home in NY on Saturday Sept. 18th. He understands this is a very special day and hopes you could attend the dinner…however, if you could not make dinner, possibly you could join for dessert.” It closed “Please let me know if you and your guest can attend.”19

Merrell answered that evening, in a message timed Fri, 17 Sep 2010 18:17:22 -0400: “Dear Lesley, and Jeffrey, / I just got his. It sounds great; thank you for the invitation. Kathy and I would love to come (I assume Kathy can come?). But we need to see if we can rearrange something else for tomorrow night and will not be able to tell you for sure until Sat AM. / I hope this is OK. / Thank you, / Woody”. The sheet prints “I just got his.”6

He wrote again the following afternoon: “Kathy and I have a dinner tonight we cannot change. I will try to leave early to come for dessert. I hope I won’t feel like I am interrupting an intimate gathering by the time I get there. / Regards, / Woody”.6 Groff forwarded that to Epstein with the note “I let Dr. Merrell know he is more than welcome to arrive late…that others will be arriving for dessert as well…”6

Nothing read for this page records whether he went. The documents are an invitation, an acceptance in principle and a partial withdrawal; the searches run for a reply, a thank-you or any later reference are listed in the footnote and returned nothing of that kind.20 The dinner was fourteen months after Epstein’s release to home detention, and Bernard Kruger, who was invited to the same dinner, is recorded on his own page as having attended.

The instruction sheets, 2010 to 2016

The largest and most regular body of material under his name is a series of dated, bulleted instruction sheets printed on his letterhead and headed “Date:” and “Patient: Jeffrey Epstein”. Twenty-five of them are reachable through the letterhead text, dated from 4 March 2010 to 19 September 2016; some are filed more than once.21 Four were read at the image for this page.221109

They are written in the first person and in the imperative. The earliest opens “Jeffery the following is an addendum to yesterday’s email instructions”, misspelling the patient’s forename, and runs through a tuberculin skin test, two named herbal sleep preparations, an increase in a prescribed drug, a three-day juice cleanse followed by a ten-day vegan diet, and a list of reading. One item on that list is his own: “My book, “The Source” (paperback title, “Power Up”)”.22

They record him prescribing. The sheet of 19 September 2016 says “I have sent in the prescriptions to your pharmacy” and names two.9 They record him performing procedures: the sheet of 15 October 2015 opens “Continue acupuncture series (done here Oct 14 and 15)”.10 They record him keeping the file: the same September 2016 sheet instructs “Have full body MRI report sent to me (and reports in general when you see specialists to keep a master record)” and “I will send labs to Rony and Mechanick.”9

The household’s own calendar carries an appointment on the date of the last of those sheets. An alert timed 9:30 a.m. on 19 September 2016 reads “September 19, 2016 9:30 AM : 9:30-10:45am Annual Appt w/Dr. Merrill (75 minutes) 44 East 67th Street (between Park & Madison) Suite 1 JOJO TO DRIVE YOU OR WALK?”, and a message to Epstein the evening before carried the subject line “Drive or walk to Dr. Merrell tomorrow for 9:30am? THUNDERSTORMS expected…”. Those two documents record an arrangement. No document read for this page records that the appointment took place, and the instruction sheet of that date is dated, not timed.16

This page does not reproduce the laboratory values printed on those sheets. Nothing it says turns on them.

The referrals

The sheets are also a referral list, and the referrals go outward from him to named specialists. On 1 August 2011 he wrote: “I don’t recommend treating it, but if you want to have a consultation about low testosterone, my favorite consultant for this is senior Columbia urologist, Dr. Harry Fisch”. The bullet continues with the practice address, which Harry Fisch’s own page already prints, and a telephone number this page does not reproduce.1

The sheet of 15 October 2015 names the same man again, under the heading “For low testosterone, see one of”, with “Urologist Harry Fisch, MD who uses mainly Clomid (occasionally HCG)” first and “Endocrinologist Jeffery Mechanick, MD (less enthused about Clomid)” second, and adds Merrell’s own view: “(my preference is Clomid one tablet daily---induces your body to make more of its own testosterone”. The same sheet says “See your cardiologist Rony Shimony, MD to review further”.10

The sheet of 19 September 2016 refers him to “expert endoscopic , minimally-invasive neurosurgeon Saad Chaudhary, MD” for spinal stenosis and to “Jeffrey Mechanick, MD (now running a new center for Eva)” for testosterone.9 One further name appears away from the sheets quoted above, and it does not come from his paper: a message of 18 December 2014 from Epstein’s office asks whether to book “the hair specialist Dr. =errell suggested: Dr. Michael Reed”.23

That is the direction worth stating plainly. The Epstein medical network records that in this file the usual first step to a specialist is Epstein or a member of his staff rather than a physician. These sheets are the other arrangement: a named doctor, in writing, on his own paper, sending Epstein to four named specialists (Fisch, Mechanick, Shimony and Chaudhary) and asking that their reports come back to him. The Reed enquiry above is not one of them: it reaches this page from Epstein’s office, not from his paper.

October 2011: the Templeton letter of intent

On 12 October 2011 Merrell forwarded Epstein a grant Letter of Intent drafted by his Center’s research director, Benjamin Kligler, with the message “Thank you for forwarding this to Templeton. This proposal seems directly on target for what they look to fund in spirituality”. That message and the application it concerns are set out at the John Templeton Foundation and are not repeated here.

What is not on that page is what Merrell did three weeks later. On 2 November 2011 he wrote again, with the same attachment, under the same subject line:

Jeffrey,

Hello. You missed all the snow.

I was curious---did you get a chance to forward this to Mr. (? Sir) Templeton? Any idea as to the process from here?

FYI shortly after I sent this to you my Center also submitted a copy online through the usual LOI grant submission process to the Templeton Foundation.

Did you start the therapies per Jeff Mechanick?

The attachment line on this sheet reads Templeton_Foundation_LOIfinal.doc, read at the image.11

Three things stand in that message at once. He is chasing a philanthropic introduction. He is disclosing that his Center had also applied by the ordinary route. And in the same six lines he asks his patient a clinical question about a treatment another named physician had started. The page makes nothing of the juxtaposition beyond recording that it is on one sheet.

October 2015: Harvard, acupuncture, and “someone Dr Merrell thinks Jeffrey should meet with”

On Monday 12 October 2015 at 12:34 Epstein wrote to Merrell: “Weidong Lu from Harvard this accupuncturist is coming to my house tomorrw at 1130 am to try to get me to fund trials. if you have time , you are welcome to stop by. just us. . otherwise hope everything is great”. Merrell replied the same day: “Thx for the offer. I will join you tomorrow at 11:30. I can stay until just before 12:30.”12

Epstein’s schedule for the following day carries the appointment, with a second Harvard name. That sheet was not rendered, so it is quoted here as the extraction carries it, damage and all: “11:30am Appt w/Pmfessors Qiufu Ma and Weidong Lu from Harvard”, and beneath it “11:30-12:30pm Di: Merrell to join the meeting w/Professors”.24

Two days later, on 14 and 15 October, he saw Epstein at his office for acupuncture, and the instruction sheet of 15 October records it. In the weeks that followed he sent Epstein acupuncture research material under the subject lines “RE: acupuncture”, “RE: FW: acupuncture studies” and “FW: Acupuncture Lit Review”.1025

Ten days after that letter, Epstein’s office asked Merrell’s office to get him in to see the urologist the letter had named. On Sunday 25 October 2015 Lesley Groff wrote to Merrell’s address: “Good morning Dr. Merrell…sorry to bother you on a sunday! ..but Jeffrey is asking if he could see Dr. Fish tomorrow”.17 At 7:57 the next morning she wrote again, this time to a member of his staff and copying him: “Good morning Matu. Jeffrey is hoping he could see Dr Fish today. This is someone Dr Merrell thinks Jeffrey should meet with. Could you help in facilitating an appointment today?”26

Merrell answered at 12:45:25 UTC, correcting the office contact rather than the request: “Lesley, / FYI Matu is no longer in my office (for the last 18 months)---so anything you sent her in the last year did’t make it. It is Inessa: ▮ / Great to meet you the other day. / W”. The bar after the colon is the producing party’s.26 Later the same morning he wrote once more under the same subject line, “Appt made yet with Dr. Fisch??”.27

The identification of “Dr Fish” is this page’s, and here is its basis. Groff’s two messages give only that spelling. The instruction sheet of ten days earlier names “Urologist Harry Fisch, MD” as the consultant Merrell preferred for the condition under discussion; Merrell’s own follow-up message of 26 October spells it “Dr. Fisch”; and Harry Fisch’s page records that Epstein himself wrote “dr harry fish” elsewhere in this correspondence. The sheets do not state the identification and this page does not treat it as stated.

The office as a booking desk, and third parties sent to the practice

Epstein’s staff booked his appointments with Merrell, chased the results, and were told when he could not be reached. A staff member in Merrell’s office wrote to Groff on 27 November 2012, “Can Dr. Merrell give him a call later on today about the results?”, and later that afternoon, “I just emailed Mr. E the results. Dr. Merrell said he can speak at 5:00. Would Mr. E be able to call the office at that time?”328

Traffic also ran the other way. On 3 October 2016 Epstein’s office wrote to Ariane de Rothschild: “you are confirmed to see Dr. Merrell on Thursday at 8am”, gave the practice’s address and suite, and added: “They are asking if it is possible for you to fill out the paperwork they have sent you prior to your appointment if you have the time…but if not, Dr. Merrell can go over it all with you on Thursday…”.29 The sheet says “the paperwork”; it does not say what the paperwork was and this page does not supply it. A blank form headed “Checklist for New Patient Inquiries” on Merrell’s letterhead is itself in Epstein’s files, and nothing read for this page connects that form to this booking.30 And in January 2017 Merrell wrote to Epstein, “No problem. I arranged to see her today. My pleasure”, the “her” being a person the sheet does not name on its face.31

2018

The correspondence continues to the end of the period the release covers.

On Tuesday 11 September 2018 a member of Epstein’s staff wrote to Merrell: “Good morning Dr Merrell. Jeffrey is asking if he may speak with you today? Jeffrey is in Paris but will make himself available to speak anything you have! He is also asking if he could please have you take his blood this Saturday morning? He will arrive late Friday.”32 Four seconds later an automatic reply came back from the address, signed “Woodson Merrell, MD”, saying he was away. That reply is a message generated by software and not an act by a person, and this page treats it as one: its own text says he would be away “until Tuesday Sept 11th” and refers to office closures in August and early September, so it was stale on the day it fired.33

Nine days later, on 20 September 2018, the office was still being chased: “Morning! Following up to see if you have had any luck in facilitat”, the line running on past the point quoted.34

Laboratory reports for Epstein were transmitted by facsimile from his practice in September 2018. This page reproduces nothing else from them.35

The last document read for this page is a letter of 11 December 2018, on his letterhead, to another named physician. It concerns a patient of his other than Epstein, and nothing from its body is quoted on this page. It is the only instrument read for this page that carries an ink signature: a cursive mark of varying stroke width running across and past the ruled line, over the two title blocks quoted in the infobox.2

December 2018: “He has only ever been kind to us”

At 9:23 on the morning of Thursday 6 December 2018, Kathy Merrell wrote to Eva Andersson-Dubin:

Dear Eva, I just want to say how sorry I am about whatever is going on with Jeffrey right now. I don’t understand how he got all mixed up in the nasty political environment. It must be very painful to be dragged through the mud in such an ugly way. He has only ever been kind to us and generous to the Crohn’s and Colitis Foundation. Please let him know that [a family member] and I (and of course Woody) are thinking about you guys and hoping you just simply don’t look at the news!!

Andersson-Dubin answered four minutes later, at 9:27: “Thank you Kathy!!! / Jeff is ok… thick skin … He really ignores most of it as do most of his friends” with two folded-hands emoji, “I will let him know you emailed me” with two kissing-face emoji. She forwarded the exchange to Epstein, who replied at 14:32:32 UTC, which is 9:32 Eastern on a December morning, with the whole of his message: “thx. oy”.36

Two things about that message are worth separating. The sentiment attributed to Woodson Merrell is attributed by his wife, not written by him, and nothing read for this page records him saying anything about the coverage. And the dates sit together: Kathy Merrell wrote on 6 December; the last letter read for this page, signed by Merrell, is dated five days later.362

What the LinkedIn traffic is, and what it is not

Five of the e-mails in this record were sent by LinkedIn, across six filed identifiers, and they are the weakest material on the page.

On 1 June 2013 an invitation went from “Woodson Merrell, M.D.” to an Epstein address; on 4 June a reminder arrived headed “Woodson Merrell, M.D.’s invitation is awaiting your response”; on 2 January 2014 a notification reached Epstein reading “Jeffrey, Woodson has accepted your invitation”, under the title line “Woodson Merrell, M.D. / Chairman, Department of Integrative Medicine, Beth Israel Medical Center, NYC”; and his profile card appears inside two network-update digests sent to Groff.37

These are evidence that a platform sent an e-mail. The title they print is LinkedIn’s rendering of what the profile said, not a document of his office, and the phrase “has accepted your invitation” is boilerplate: the exact string returns 202 documents across this release. Nothing on this page rests on any of them.

The title is nevertheless independently supported for the period, and from a document Merrell wrote: his own circular of 20 April 2012 signs off “Chairman / Department of Integrative Medicine / Beth Israel Medical Center”.4 That circular is the one act of his on this page addressed to a distribution list rather than to Epstein. It invites its recipients to “a special ceremony to bless the beginning of construction of the Continuum Center for Health and Healing’s new space” at 245 Fifth Avenue, led by “Alex Stark, the Center’s consultant feng shui master”.4

Every row says what its own document says and nothing more. Several rows record an arrangement rather than an event: the 13 October 2015 meeting is evidenced by his own acceptance of the day before and by a schedule stamped that morning, and no document read for this page records that it took place.

What this page does not do

Where a quotation is set inline rather than in a block, a line break on the sheet is written /. That notation is this page’s and is not on any sheet, so an inline quotation carrying it will not resolve against the index as one string. Each footnote states for itself whether its sheet was read at the image.

It does not reproduce telephone numbers, facsimile numbers, e-mail addresses, dates of birth, or patient, specimen or control identifiers from any sheet it cites, including from his own letterhead and from laboratory reports transmitted by his office.

It does not reproduce laboratory values or clinical particulars concerning Epstein beyond what a referral or a prescription instruction requires, and where a document read here concerns the health of a third party it neither names that person nor reproduces the particular.

It does not say whether Merrell knew anything about the conduct for which Epstein was convicted in 2008 or charged in 2019, and no document read for this page bears on that question. The August 2009 message is his view of the press coverage, written in his own words, and it is given here as that and nothing else.

Excluded after reading: Morrell (77 documents, of which the 76 lying outside the floor were classified from their text layer and 6 were read in context; all 6 are a different person or thing, and none of the 77 is added here), Merrll (2, Merrill Lynch), Merreli (1, inside the floor already), and six of the errell/Merrel returns which are a Texas place name, a marketing e-mail, a bond schedule, handwriting damage and a different person of a similar name. The bare token Merrill returns 1,995 and is useless here, being overwhelmingly Merrill Lynch; the honorific phrase is what separates them. The returns were grouped by sheet before any total was read: 142 documents, one matching sheet each, the largest 1,865 characters, so no container row is in the set. Every one of the 142 was then read at its text layer, in a window around each occurrence. By what the sheet is doing: 42 are copies of one household day schedule, for Monday 19 September 2016, together with the calendar alert fired from it; 45 are Epstein instructing his office about an appointment, a test or a call of his own; 10 are a household contact list; 8 concern a prescription; 5 concern a charity; 4 are his office being chased by Epstein’s office; 26 concern an appointment or a medication for somebody other than Epstein, and nothing from that class is reproduced on this page; and 2 are Epstein writing to a correspondent. 18 of the 142 print a correct spelling of his surname on the same sheet. Among those 142 text layers, read for this page, no document was found to denote a different Dr. Merrill; that is a statement about those 142 readings and about nothing else, and it is not a claim that no such document exists. Five of the 142 were read at the image on 2026-10-18. Three of those five are cited here, and nothing on this page rests on the other two.
