Melanie Spinella

⚠ what this page is about, and what it is not

Melanie Spinella was Leon D. Black’s executive assistant at Apollo Management, and hers is the twenty-second largest sender set in Jeffrey Epstein’s released e-mail metadata.1 This page records what she wrote, what was written to her, and one authority over Black’s money that a third party described in writing. She appears nowhere in the litigation or investigative record in this release: the surname returns nothing alongside “deposition”, “subpoena” or “Dechert”. No allegation against her was found in the material reviewed for this page and none is made here. Her e-mail addresses, telephone and fax numbers are not reproduced, and neither are any bank account identifiers.

Melanie Spinella was the executive assistant to Leon D. Black, chairman and chief executive of Apollo Global Management, through the years in which Black paid Jeffrey Epstein $158 million for advice on trusts, estates, tax, philanthropy and the running of Black’s family office.211 She is the channel through which a very large part of that relationship ran. Epstein’s released mailbox holds 5,219 messages sent by her, across 4,267 documents, dated between December 2010 and December 2018.645 The traffic is overwhelmingly her own free-text writing: short notes proposing a time, relaying what Black had said, chasing an answer, or asking what Epstein wanted done. None of it is a system-generated notice. The messages carry no template, no fixed field set and no machine signature; each is composed prose over her own Apollo signature block, and the four sheets read at the image for this page are all of that kind.21293

What lifts her above scheduling is a single sentence written by Black’s own family office, and one ledger line written by its finance man. Both say she held power of attorney over Leon Black’s personal bank accounts and used it.

Identification, and the name forms

Her signature block states the identification directly. A message of Friday, 11 October 2013 to Epstein, read at the image at 700 dpi, carries a block in which her name sits beside “Apollo Management”, above the firm’s address at 9 West 57th Street, New York, then a barred telephone line and a barred e-mail line, then the line “Executive Assistant to Leon D. Black”, closing on the boilerplate of “Apollo Global Management, LLC”.2 Eighteen months earlier the same block gave her name, then “Assistant to Leon D. Black”, then “Apollo Management, LP”, without the word “Executive”.3

⚠ The text layer fabricates her employer’s name. One copy of the block renders the title as “Executive Assistant to Leon D. Slack”.13 The sheet read at the image says Black.2 A second copy renders it “Executive Assistant to Leon D. B ac”.14 Neither error is visible to any search, and a reader who trusted either would have the wrong man.

Name forms were measured against the corpus before anything here was written, because a base form has understated a subject’s file on this desk by as much as 39%.

The base phrase understates the reachable set by 5.0%. The "Melanie M Spinella" and "M Spinella" middle-initial forms return 0 and 1, so the middle-initial mechanism that has multiplied other subjects’ files ninefold does nothing here.7

The surname is nearly clean but not wholly hers. 128 documents carry “Spinella” without the full phrase. Twenty of them were sampled at random and read: nineteen are hers, reached through her e-mail address or through a stacked header that separates forename from surname; one is a film listing naming the actor Stephen Spinella, who returns 2 documents in all and has nothing to do with this subject.15 The surname is therefore a usable key and the full name is not a ceiling on it.

What the traffic is

The subject lines are a census of the relationship. Of 5,219 rows, 1,891 carry no subject at all and another 1,200 or so are bare reply and forward markers.16 Of the rest the largest single group is the man himself: “Leon” 107, “meeting with Leon” 19 and 18, “call with Leon” 16, “RE: Leon” 19, “Re: Leon” 38, “lunch with Leon” 10.16 “Jeffrey Epstein” and its reply forms account for several hundred more.16 These are appointments being arranged, and an arrangement is not an occurrence: nothing in a message proposing a time establishes that the meeting happened.

The volume peaks in 2013 and declines steadily thereafter.

Power of attorney over Leon Black’s personal accounts

On Friday, 14 November 2014, Heather Gray of Elysium Management LLC, Black’s family office, wrote to Epstein under the subject “art purchases - who arranges payment”.9 The whole exchange is on one sheet, read at the image at 700 dpi.

“I’ve been asked by Eileen to tell Melanie that payment for all art purchases - whether made by Leon for his personal collection or by Leon on behalf of the children’s trusts - should be handled by the family office.

Currently, Melanie is paying for Leon’s art purchases for his personal collection directly out of his bank accounts on which she has power of attorney. She sends the family office invoices for purchases being made on behalf of the children’s trusts so that we can arrange payment for those.

I just want to confirm that you and Leon want payment for all art purchases to be handled by the family office.”9

The word “all” in the last sentence is in bold on the sheet.9 “Eileen” is Eileen Alexanderson, who worked on the Black account from Black’s side: her sign-offs read Black Family Partners c/o Apollo Management and then Elysium Management, Black’s family office, and the trust’s wire advices are addressed to her personally. ⚠ This page previously said she worked “from Epstein’s side”, which was wrong, and the correction is recorded here rather than made silently.17

Eleven minutes later Epstein forwarded it to Spinella with nothing added.9 She replied: “Is this the way we are doing it now?”9 Epstein answered: “leon should decide . I think the new partnership and family office should pay, its his decision”.9

Three things sit in that exchange. The family office states in writing, as an existing fact, that Black’s assistant was paying for his personal art out of his own accounts under a power of attorney. The family office does not tell her so directly; it asks Epstein to confirm the change, and Epstein is the one who forwards it to her. And Epstein, an outside adviser, is treated by both sides as the node through which a change to the household’s payment architecture has to pass.

The authority is corroborated independently. On Sunday, 9 August 2015, Epstein asked Richard Joslin which entity had bought a particular work and from what account.18 Joslin’s reply, read at the image, lists the 2015 acquisition against one U.S. Trust account and the 2014 acquisition, named “Easels”, against a second, which he marks “(Spinella POA)”; he adds that the 2013 acquisitions were “most likely” from the same second account, writing that he needed “to double check records in office”.18 The account identifiers in that thread are not reproduced on this page.

⚠ What this does and does not establish. Two people inside Black’s financial apparatus, writing nine months apart and for different reasons, describe the same authority in the same terms. No power of attorney instrument is in the material reviewed for this page, and neither document is signed by her. The claim here is that the authority was described in writing by the people who administered the accounts, which is a documented fact about what they wrote; whether an executed instrument exists is not settled by these sheets.

The Black children’s trusts, December 2012

On Friday, 14 December 2012, a chain about the use of gift and generation-skipping transfer tax exemptions by Leon Black’s four children reached Epstein from Eileen Alexanderson, who asked him “Are you good with this as a plan?”17 Below her line sat an exchange between Ada Clapp, a managing director and wealth strategist at U.S. Trust Bank of America Private Wealth Management, and Elyse G. Kirschner, a partner at McDermott Will & Emery, arguing over whether the children should create an LLC and exchange promissory notes for interests in it, or instead take distributions from existing non-exempt trusts and re-gift them.17 Clapp’s objection is that the Internal Revenue Service would not view notes from children with no assets as a bona fide loan.17

Epstein forwarded the whole chain to Spinella at 1:23 PM.17 Her reply, timed 18:25:08 UTC and read at the image, is one line:

“Jeffrey – do you want me to print this for Leon -??”17

That sentence is the smallest and clearest statement of her position in the record. The tax planning of Black’s children was being settled between Epstein, Black’s in-house staff, a private bank and a law firm; whether Black himself read it on paper was a question put to his assistant, and she put it back to Epstein.

The $500,000 to the MIT Media Lab, May 2014

On Thursday, 8 May 2014 Joi Ito, then director of the MIT Media Lab, sent Epstein a sample letter and transfer instructions for putting money into his discretionary account at MIT, writing that it “was written assuming that it would be coming from Leon Black, but please have someone edit it if necessary”.19

Five days later, on Tuesday, 13 May 2014 at 14:35:20 UTC, Epstein forwarded both named attachments to Spinella. The message, read at the image, is nine words:

“please have leon send 500k, from the foundation, to the attached”20

The attachment field on this copy names two files: a gift-information document dated 7 May, and a letter document carrying Black’s name.20

Sixteen days later, on the morning of 29 May 2014, Ito wrote to Epstein: “I just got notice that $500K came into my slush fund account. Thanks! Should I thank Leon Black?”21

The instruction to Black’s side went to her, and it went to nobody else on that sheet. What she did with it is not in the material reviewed for this page; the payment’s arrival is documented from Ito’s end only.

Woody Allen and Black’s aeroplane, March 2012

On Wednesday, 7 March 2012 Spinella wrote to Epstein’s office, under the subject “Woody Allen”:

“Jeffrey asked if Leon would give Woody Allen a ride back from Paris on March 25th – it’s tentative, I understand, but do you think I could have the following info for him – our plane needs it”3

Beneath it she set out five items the aircraft required: name, address, date of birth, passport information, and city and state of birth.3 She closed “Thanks so much. I am going on vacation Friday and would like to have this in place!!” and signed “M”.3 The recipient’s name is barred on this sheet, in the To line and again after “Hi”.3 None of the requested values appears on it, and none is reproduced here.

The reply that afternoon was “working on this!! Have half the info…as soon as I get the rest will send it all over in one email for less confusion!”22 Twelve days later she wrote again: “With respect to the passports – I need the date of issuance, place of issuance, date of expiration.”23 On 22 March she reported a schedule change, “They are now leaving Paris at 3:30pm on Sunday instead of 3pm”, and asked to confirm that Woody Allen had transportation on landing at Jet Aviation.24 The answer came back that his assistant would.25

This is an arrangement, not an occurrence. Nothing cited here records the flight taking place.

Two and a half years later the same pairing recurs in a different register. On Wednesday, 10 September 2014 she wrote to Epstein, copying Lesley Groff: “Just spoke with Leon – he said he could do 5:30 tomorrow at your house. Also September 23r° is good for Alex and Leon at 3 for Woody Allen. Thank you”.14 On 22 September, chasing it, an Epstein-side correspondent asked her “and may I ask…is this so that Alex can go with Jeffrey to watch Woody Allen edit his movie? I didn’t really ever catch what this is all about…”26 Her reply, on the same sheet, was one word: yup.26

A request routed through her, September 2011

On Tuesday, 27 September 2011 a correspondent signing “Dana” wrote into Epstein’s office under the subject “email addy for Leon Black’s office”:

“Ghislaine asked that I send an email to Leon Black’s assistant but we don’t seem to have an email address for Melanie Spinella. Do you have an email address for her or is there a generic office email I could send to?”27

The reply from Epstein’s side that afternoon opened “This is for Melanie:” and supplied one.28 The address itself is not reproduced here.

What this establishes is narrow and should be read narrowly. It records that a request attributed to Ghislaine Maxwell was to be sent to Black’s assistant, that the sender did not have her address, and that Epstein’s office supplied it. Nothing cited here shows a message reaching Spinella, or any reply from her.

The last dated traffic, after the relationship is said to have ended

The Dechert LLP memorandum to Apollo’s conflicts committee states that, over a fee dispute, Epstein’s difficulty, an unrepaid $20 million and the discovery that Epstein had mischaracterised his fees as deductible, “Black severed relations with Epstein by October 2018.”29

Her traffic does not stop there. The latest dated messages in her sender set are about a gift from Epstein. On 19 November 2018 she wrote “So nice of him!!” and gave the specification of an Apple Watch Series 4, under a subject line reading “GIFT from Jeffrey Epstein-Apple Watch Series 4”.5 The thread runs through a 17 December query from Epstein’s side asking her to confirm it had arrived, and closes on 18 December 2018 with her reply, timed 11:21:22 UTC:

“So sorry - I came back from Florida and it was waiting for me! Got crazy at work! Such a thoughtful gift!!!”5

Richard Kahn is among those copied in the chain.5 This is the last dated row in her sender set.6 A comparable gift four years earlier drew a longer note: on 18 December 2014 she thanked Epstein “for the beautiful Sweater --- one of my favorite stores!!”30

⚠ What the sequence shows, and what it does not. Two dated facts sit side by side: a severance placed in or before October 2018 by Black’s own commissioned investigators, and a gift from Epstein to Black’s assistant acknowledged in November and December 2018. The Dechert statement is about Black, not about his office, and nothing cited here shows Black knowing of the gift. The question the sequence raises, and does not answer, is how far into Black’s household the severance actually reached.

What the release does not show

These absences are scoped to the material reviewed for this page and to the searches named.

  • No litigation or investigative record. The surname with “deposition” returns 0 documents, with “subpoena” 0, and with “Dechert” 0.10 She is not named in the Dechert memorandum’s account of Black’s dealings with Epstein, which describes the family office and its staffing without her.
  • No power of attorney instrument. Two people describe the authority; no executed document granting it was found.
  • No record of what she did with the $500,000 instruction. The instruction to her is documented and the money’s arrival is documented; the step between them is not.
  • No message from Maxwell to her, and no reply. Only the request for her address, and the address being supplied.
  • Nothing after 18 December 2018. Whether her employment continued, and what she did when Epstein was arrested seven months later, is not in the material reviewed for this page.
