Richard Joslin

⚠ what this page is about, and what it is not

Richard Joslin was the chief financial officer of Elysium Management LLC, Leon D. Black’s family office, from the autumn of 2013. He signed as “CFO, Elysium Management LLC” and, before that, as “Richard Joslin, CPA” of the accountancy firm Rothstein Kass.123 This page records what he wrote and what was written to him and about him. He appears nowhere in the litigation or investigative record in this release: the surname returns nothing alongside “deposition” or “subpoena”. No allegation against him was found in the material reviewed for this page and none is made here. Jeffrey Epstein’s letters to Black contain sharp personal criticism of him; where that criticism bears on who controlled his work and his pay it is given below, framed as Epstein’s own account, and the remainder is not reproduced. No bank account identifier, telephone number, fax number or e-mail address appearing in these documents is reproduced on this page, and no member of his family is named.

Richard Joslin was the finance man of Leon Black’s family office through the years in which Black paid Jeffrey Epstein $158 million for advice on trusts, estates, tax, philanthropy and the running of that office.9 He is the person who knew which account had paid for which painting, what the trusts owned, what tax was owed and when, and what an aircraft was worth. His file is not a file of transmittals. Across it he values companies, instructs appraisers, negotiates an aircraft purchase in his own words and to his own number, tells three trustees that a deliverable they had asked for will be late, and reports to Epstein on a notice from the Internal Revenue Service about one of Black’s children.

The line that brought this desk to him is one he wrote himself.

The ledger line

On Saturday, 8 August 2015, Epstein asked him from a personal address whether he had access to QuickBooks from home, saying he wanted to know which entity had bought a particular work of art and what entity it had been paid to.10 Joslin answered that night with the invoices. The following morning Epstein pressed the question: “paid by leon from what account.”10 At 7:10 that Sunday morning Joslin sent back a three-line list. Read at the image at 700 dpi, it sets the 2015 acquisition, named “Kelly’s Slough”, against one U.S. Trust account; the 2014 acquisition, named “Easels”, against a second, which he annotates “(Spinella POA)”; and the 2013 acquisitions as “most likely” that same second account, also annotated “(Spinella POA)”, adding that he needed to “double check records in office”.10

“2015 acquisition (Kelly’s Slough) paid by US Trust account ▮

2014 acquisition (Easels) paid by US Trust ▮ (Spinella POA)

2013 acquisitions – I need to double check records in office but most likely US Trust ▮ (Spinella POA)”10

The bars in the quotation above are this desk’s, not the producer’s. The account identifiers in this thread are not reproduced on this wiki. Later that morning he added one more line, that the first account “is joint US trust account that family office pays invoices”.10

Three things about that list. It is composed prose in his own hand, not a system envelope: there is no template, no field set, no machine signature, and the annotation in brackets is his own judgement about whose authority stood behind an account. It is the corroboration that Melanie Spinella held power of attorney over Black’s personal accounts, written by the man who kept the books rather than by the family office that first described it.11 And it is Joslin, not Black and not the family office, who is asked the question and who answers it.

Identification, and the name forms

His own signature block makes the identification. A message of Thursday, 24 July 2014 to Epstein, forwarded on by him in December of that year and read at the image at 700 dpi, closes on four lines giving his name, the title “CFO”, the firm “Elysium Management LLC” and a Park Avenue address in New York, with the contact lines beneath covered by a bar.1 An April 2014 message to the trustee Barry J. Cohen closes on the same block.2 Ten months before either, on 30 September 2013, the signature reads “Richard Joslin, CPA” over the name of the accountancy firm Rothstein Kass.3

The name-form measurements, and they do not behave the way a longer form usually does.

Neither full form contains the other. The base phrase misses 835 documents that the familiar form reaches, and the familiar form misses 4,438 that the base phrase reaches. A pass keyed on either alone would lose between a sixth and four fifths of the file.

The 760 documents carrying only the surname are the ones in which other people write about him, and they are the operational record: Epstein instructing that Joslin oversee payments, Epstein telling Black what he thinks of Joslin’s work, colleagues asking who is responsible for a valuation. A page built from the full-name forms alone would have missed all of it.

"John Joslin" returns 27 documents and is not a second person. In every instance read for this page the string is the extraction welding the end of one line to the start of the next in Epstein’s own list of instructions, which reads “fire john” on one line and “joslin stays for a year” on the next.12 No second Joslin was found in the release.

One date in the metadata is wrong in a way the brief for this page predicted. The earliest sender row for him is stamped 6 April 2011. The document is a forward Epstein sent on Monday, 6 April 2015, and the enclosed message is of the same day; the derived year has lost a digit.13 Treated as a date, that row is an artefact. His first dated appearance in the release is 30 September 2013.3

Arrival, September 2013

At 3:23 pm on Monday, 30 September 2013 Joslin forwarded a message under the subject “Signed offer letter.” to Eileen Alexanderson of Black’s office, from his address at Rothstein Kass, over a signature reading “Richard Joslin, CPA”.3 At 7:37 that evening Alexanderson forwarded the whole thing to Epstein under the subject “FYI”, with a PDF attached.3 The hire of Black’s chief financial officer was reported to Epstein on the day it closed.

Epstein’s own later account of that hire is set out below. It is his account and no other party’s.

What he did

He built and kept the art inventory. On Monday, 21 April 2014 he sent Barry J. Cohen, one of the Black trusts’ trustees, the current art portfolio for two entities, writing that “the vast majority of the items have been checked and verified” but that records were still being reviewed “to ensure we have precise cost, description, etc. for all items, particularly items acquired many years ago”, and that “Fair value is based on an appraisal performed by Sotheby’s in June 2013.”2 Two days later he sent the underlying spreadsheet, describing an extract from a larger file that would shortly go “onto a database so that it can be accessed by my multiple end users at all times”, and explaining which classifications he had inserted himself where the Sotheby’s cataloguing did not yet cover them.14 Epstein was copied on the whole exchange.2

Epstein put him over the payments. On Sunday, 27 April 2014 Epstein wrote to Alexanderson, Spinella, Joslin and Ada Clapp setting out a reorganisation of Black’s banking: trading accounts to be opened at three banks, three banks to bid on the art, boat and plane loans, accounts to be in Black’s name alone. The sentence that assigns the work reads: “the joint checking acct will be serviced by melanie and except for household acct , joslin will oversee payments.”15 In the same message Epstein calls an all-hands meeting for 8 May and tells “eileen and rich” to interview a bookkeeper.15 This is Epstein, an outside adviser, allocating responsibility for the movement of Leon Black’s money between two of Black’s own employees.

He negotiated an aircraft purchase. Between December 2014 and February 2015 Joslin dealt directly with Jon P. Conlon, a senior market analyst at the aircraft broker Avjet, over a Boeing Business Jet identified by serial number.16 On Thursday, 5 February 2015 he wrote: “The earlier model in your note below is older and will sell for less. I understand that it is now under contract to sell for $23MM. That said, we would be willing to increase the offer for 30751 to $28MM / Please advise / RJ” (the line breaks are the sheet’s).16 Conlon replied that he was recommending the seller’s board lower its expectations below $30,000,000 and thanked him “for the revised offer”.17 Joslin forwarded that reply to Epstein with the single word “fyi”, and Epstein answered: “Im sure you have verified the other sale contract. our offer is only good until next wed. ( I was told today that the actual price might be closer to 22m , what has happened to the market??”17 Epstein calls it “our offer”. ⚠ The buyer is not named on either sheet; Conlon refers only to “your principle”, and no document read for this page states who the principal was or whether the aircraft was bought.1716

He handled an Internal Revenue Service notice about one of Black’s children. On Thursday, 24 July 2014 he sent Epstein four documents concerning a gift tax return, listing them in a numbered list, and added two short lines of his own: “I have confirmed the address on the notice to be a bona fide Treasury office.” and “30 days to respond.”1 When he forwarded the same message to Epstein again on 11 December he added: “IRS contact is Lindeman. Do you think Alan is best person to handle? Or Tom?”1 He is not transmitting; he is verifying, timing and asking who should be put on it.

He ran the valuations, and defended his handling of them. Through 2014 he instructed Empire Valuation Consultants over the valuation of an entity carrying Black’s initials, telling its managing director in June that “I need to go back to Sotheby’s and get a better valuation” and in August that the engagement letter was under review.18 On Thursday, 14 August 2014, after Ada Clapp, Elysium’s chief legal officer, questioned the status of the work, he replied at length that he was “conversing daily with the Empire team”, that “Your last question seems to infer I am not organized or on top of this effort”, and that he would have preferred she tell the valuer “that this was my responsibility and ask that he speak to me directly.”18 Clapp answered: “I did not speak with Scott. He left me a voicemail. As you know, I already told him that you were responsible for valuations which is why I have not returned his call.”18

He reported to the trustees, and told them when Epstein had decided to wait. Notes of a trustees meeting of 21 November 2014, circulated by Barry J. Cohen to Alexanderson, Joslin, Clapp, John Hannan, Richard Ressler and Leon Black, record four tasks against Joslin’s name, among them looking into what selling one holding for all the trusts would entail and adding appraisals of Chinese bronzes to the art inventory.19 Five days later Joslin wrote back to the three trustees, copying Alexanderson, Clapp and Brad Wechsler:

“Barry, John and Richard: At the meeting last week, there was discussion of the provision of a comprehensive funding estimate and investment theses for Artspace, Regan Arts and Phaidon by today. In consultation with JEE, we need to defer until we can be certain that we can provide a precise estimate. Have a safe holiday. RJ”19

“JEE” is Epstein. The initials are how Epstein’s own mail footer names him throughout this release, and Joslin uses them to the trustees without explanation.19 A deliverable the trustees of Leon Black’s family trusts had asked for was deferred, and the family office’s CFO told them the deferral had been settled with Epstein.

He asked Epstein’s permission before a bank saw Black’s personal financial statement. On Friday, 10 April 2015 an accountant sent Epstein draft personal financial statements for Black as of 31 December 2014, noting they had been reviewed by “Rich J & Brad”.20 Four days later Joslin wrote to Epstein: “Jeffrey: / The bank is asking Melanie. Please advise if you are OK in submitting. / Thanks”.20

And the ordinary business of the office ran through him too. He asked Elysium’s chief legal officer for standard non-disclosure agreements before engaging per diem staff to photocopy records. Epstein answered: “in what role .? careful. nda= are useless in real life with the wrong person.”21 Joslin replied: “Role is clerical/ staffing agency to =hotocopy Raiche records. If NDA not useful here, I will make other e=forts to secure/ protect info.”21 Epstein closed it: “take a para from paul weiss. dn’t worry about th= money”21 The damaged characters are printed on the sheet itself, not introduced by the extraction; they are reproduced as they stand.21 In April 2014 he told Epstein that an entity “may own an item worth $48MM” and that nobody in the office had known, calling it “a de novo question

  • who owns this work?”22 In December 2013 he put to Epstein a reconsideration of the family office structure at an initial discussion figure of $2MM a year, which Epstein met with “yes,, again lets put numbers on all.”23 In April 2017 he sent Epstein tax returns for four Black trusts and a limited liability company together with a schedule of tax payments owed and an income tax projection.24

Who paid him, on Epstein’s account

In the small hours of Tuesday, 15 November 2016 Epstein wrote a long letter addressed to “Leon” and sent it to his own address.25 Thirteen hours later he sent a revised version of the same letter to Melanie Spinella.26 The revision is where the compensation claim appears. Read at the image at 700 dpi, the later version says:

“joslin was chosen from a pool of 2 people. each that would be limited by a salary of 250k. ( yes i personally augmented his comp in order to get him ) I did say hire both Lisa to do the bookkeeping and joslin tax,”26

The parenthesis is not in the version Epstein wrote the night before. That earlier copy reads “joslin was chosen from apool of 2 peopl. each that would be limited by a salary of 250k. I did say hire both lisa to do the bookeeoing and joslin tax,” and stops there.25 Two other sentences harden between the two drafts in the same way.2526 The two sheets are the same letter at two stages, not two letters, and the sharper claims are in the second.

What this does and does not establish. It is Epstein’s own written assertion, in a letter whose purpose is to argue with Black about money, that he personally topped up the pay of the man who kept Black’s books. It is a credible allegation and not a documented fact: no payment record, payroll entry or agreement supporting it was found in the material reviewed for this page, and Joslin’s own account of his compensation is not in that material either.

The same letter says that Black told Epstein he had “in essence fired” Joslin and that “it then turns out that he didn’t consider himself fired at all he just received less money”.26 The list of tasks at the end of the earlier version reads “fire john .. joslin stays for a year. or so.”, and the same words stand in the revised version.2527 Those are Epstein’s statements about another man’s employment, made to that man’s employer, and nothing in the material reviewed for this page corroborates or contradicts them. The traffic is consistent with the timing and no more than consistent: his sender rows fall from 1,036 in 2015 to 292 in 2016 and 96 in 2017, with a single row in 2018.5

An education invoice, and a question this page cannot answer

On Friday, 27 March 2015 Richard Kahn, Epstein’s accountant at HBRK Associates, scanned a document and sent it to Epstein under the subject “Joslin Education Request”, then sent it again fifty minutes later under the subject “Joslin Education Invoice” with the note “Previous email did not have all pages”.28 Ten minutes after that Epstein replied: “ask joslin if he sent the march 13 payment already?”28

The attachment is not in the release and the invoice itself has not been read. Epstein’s question is capable of two readings, one in which Joslin was the payer and one in which he was not, and nothing read for this page settles which. The last dated message from Joslin in the release, on 7 June 2018, is a short personal note of thanks sent to Brad Wechsler, Epstein and Melanie Spinella for help with a family member’s education; it names no sum, no payer and no arrangement.4 The sequence is stated because it is in the record. No conclusion is drawn from it.

Gaps in this page, stated

  • No instrument. No employment agreement, payroll record, compensation schedule or power of attorney instrument for anyone named here was found in the material reviewed for this page.
  • No account statement. The art ledger names accounts; the statements behind it were not located and are not cited.
  • The aircraft. Whether the offer was accepted, and on whose behalf it was made, is not established by any sheet read for this page.
  • Provenance is mixed and is stated at each footnote. Twelve sheets were rendered and read at 700 dpi: EFTA00849135 p.1, EFTA00689059 p.1, EFTA01003171 p.1, EFTA00647932 p.2, EFTA00710053 pp.1 and 2, EFTA00663612 p.2, EFTA00667037 p.1, EFTA01062060 p.1 and EFTA00837953 p.1 and EFTA02593272 p.1 and EFTA00693922 p.1. Everything else cited here was read at the extracted text layer only, and that layer is unreliable: on EFTA00710053 p.1 it renders the subject line “BBJ SN 30751 Offer” as “SDI SN 30751 Offer”, which the image refutes.17
  • This page said no wiki page existed for Elysium Management LLC, Ada Clapp, Eileen Alexanderson, Brad Wechsler or Barry J. Cohen. That is now partly out of date, and the correction is recorded rather than made silently: Eileen Alexanderson is published, and Ada Clapp has been written. No page exists for Elysium Management LLC, Brad Wechsler or Barry J. Cohen, each of whom appears repeatedly above. ⚠ An absence claim decays the moment someone acts on it, which is why this desk records when a page was checked and does not leave a bare “no page exists” standing.

  5. Counts taken 21 September 2026 from the released e-mail metadata at epstein-data.com, over emails_merged. sender_normalized = 'Richard Joslin': 3,579 rows across 2,640 distinct identifiers. All sender forms containing the string “oslin”: 3,807 rows across 2,764 identifiers across 124 distinct spellings, the damaged ones including “Richard loslin” and a dozen forms in which a mail-header fragment has been swept into the name field. The raw, un-normalised sender field containing “oslin”: 3,881 rows across 2,803 identifiers. The base form understates the sender set by 6.4% in rows and 4.7% in documents. Year distribution of the base form: 2013, 76; 2014, 2,017; 2015, 1,036; 2016, 292; 2017, 96; 2018, 1; with 58 rows carrying no year and one row whose derived year is an artefact.13 2

  6. Counts taken 21 September 2026 against the full-text corpus, FTS5, phrase queries scoped to text_content, counting distinct documents. “Richard Joslin” 4,607; “Rich Joslin” 1,004, of which 835 return no instance of “Richard Joslin”; the union 5,442; the bare token “Joslin” 6,202, which is 760 beyond the union; “Joslin, Richard” and “Joslin Richard” are one query under this tokeniser and return 103; “R Joslin” 14; “rjoslin” 87; “Richard A Joslin” 0; “Dick Joslin” 0. The strings queried are printed here exactly as they were run. 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9

  7. Measured over all 4,607 documents returned by the phrase “Richard Joslin”, classifying each document from its own first sheet: sender-field act 2,028 (44.0%); addressed only 1,763; header-less but authored 25; header-less press item 2; neither 709; parser refused 80. The second denominator in the infobox, 4,500, is the population less the 27 header-less documents and the 80 the parser declined. Both figures are floors, because a declined document is not a non-act and because a person can act on paper that carries no sender field at all.

  8. Measured 21 September 2026 over the full-text corpus: the token “Joslin” with “deposition” returns 0 documents and with “subpoena” 0. This is a claim about those two queries and about the material reviewed for this page, not about the release as a whole.

EFTA00849135 p.1. Read at the image at 700 dpi. The account identifiers in this thread are not reproduced anywhere on this wiki; the ▮ marks in the quotation above are this desk’s and are not producer bars. Two sender addresses are covered by bars on this copy. The same sheet is cited on Melanie Spinella. ⚠ The extracted text layer of EFTA00849135 p.1 renders Epstein’s line as “paid by Icon from what account.” The image reads “leon”. This is why a checker searching that text layer reports the quotation above as unresolved; the pin is correct and the extraction is wrong. The extraction also renders the dash in the third ledger line as an em dash where the sheet carries a shorter one. 2 3 4 5 6

  12. The string “John Joslin” returns 27 documents. Those read for this page are copies of one Epstein letter whose task list reads “fire john” at the end of one line and “joslin stays for a year. or so.” at the start of the next; the extraction joins the two. Richard Joslin to Jeffrey Epstein, Fri, 06 Feb 2015 14:06:22 +0000, subject “RE: FW: BBJ SN 30751 Offer”, carrying Epstein’s reply of Thursday, 5 February 2015 at 7:41 PM and Joslin’s forward of Jon P. Conlon’s message of the same day at 3:48 PM. EFTA00710053 p.1. Read at the image at 700 dpi. ⚠ The extracted text layer of this sheet renders the subject line as “SDI SN 30751 Offer”; the image reads “BBJ SN 30751 Offer”, and the sheet at p.2 of the same run reads “BBJ” three times. The quotation of Epstein above is the image’s text, spacing and spelling included. 2 3 4 5

  18. Ada Clapp to Richard Joslin, copying Eileen Alexanderson, Lawrence Delson and Jeffrey Epstein, Thu, 14 Aug 2014 13:38:33 +0000, subject “RE: LDB 2011 LLC”, carrying beneath it Joslin’s reply of the same morning at 9:25 AM, Clapp’s message of 8:50 AM, Joslin’s message to Scott Nammacher of Empire Valuation Consultants of 13 August at 10:43 AM, and Joslin’s messages to Nammacher of 24 June 2014 at 3:45 PM and 5:15 PM. EFTA00693922 p.1 for the exchange of 14 August 2014, read at the image at 700 dpi; pp.2 and 3, which carry the messages of 13 August and 24 June, at the text layer only. The entity’s name is given here as the subject line gives it. Clapp’s sentence is given whole: a shorter form of it would drop her reason for not returning the valuer’s call. 2 3 4

  19. Richard Joslin to Barry J. Cohen, John Hannan and Richard Ressler, copying Eileen Alexanderson, Ada Clapp and Brad Wechsler, Wednesday, 26 November 2014 at 3:16 PM, subject “RE: Notes from 11/21/14 Trustees meeting”, beneath Cohen’s circulation of the meeting notes of Saturday, 22 November 2014 at 1:46 PM to Alexanderson, Joslin, Clapp, Hannan, Ressler and Leon Black. EFTA00647932 p.2. Read at the image at 700 dpi. Contact values appearing on this sheet are not reproduced. The run’s p.1 carries a later exchange of 2 December 2014 between Ada Clapp and Brad Wechsler about the same matter and is a different message from the one quoted; it was read at the text layer only. 2 3 4

  20. Richard Joslin to Jeffrey Epstein, copying Richard D’Agostino, Tue, 14 Apr 2015 12:55:21 +0000, subject “RE: BofA Personal Financial Statements”, carrying D’Agostino’s message of Friday, 10 April 2015 at 6:23 PM. EFTA00667037 p.1. Read at the image at 700 dpi. The attachments are named in D’Agostino’s text and are not in the release. 2 3

  21. Jeffrey Epstein to Richard Joslin, Thursday, 30 October 2014 at 5:02 PM, subject “Re: per diem staffing”, carrying Joslin’s message of the same day at 12:44 PM, Epstein’s of 12:21 PM and, on p.2, Joslin’s original request to Ada Clapp and Heather Gray of 11:34 AM. EFTA02593272 p.1. Read at the image at 700 dpi.The quoted-printable damage in these three messages is printed on the sheet, which reads “=hotocopy”, “e=forts”, “nda=” and “th=” exactly as reproduced above; it is not an artefact of the extraction, and this was settled by rendering. Ada Clapp’s signature block on the same sheet gives her title as chief legal officer of Elysium Management LLC; her direct dial line is covered by a bar. p.2 of the run was read at the text layer only. 2 3 4 5

  25. Jeffrey Epstein to his own address, Tue, 15 Nov 2016 03:35:54 +0000, forwarding his message of Mon, 14 Nov 2016 at 11:07 PM, a letter addressed “Leon,”. EFTA01062060 p.1. Read at the image at 700 dpi. This sheet and EFTA00837953 p.1 are two stages of one letter, thirteen hours apart, not two letters, and they were compared line by line before the difference above was asserted. The earlier version was addressed to Epstein’s own address; whether Black received either version is not established by these sheets. ⚠ The task-list line quoted above stands on EFTA01062060 p.1 and was read there at the image; that sheet’s extracted text layer breaks it across three lines and drops the two full stops, rendering it as “fire john” / “joslin stays for a” / “year. or so.”, so a checker searching the text layer of p.1 will not find the string and will report the pin as wrong. It is not wrong. 2 3 4 5

  26. Jeffrey Epstein to his own address, Sat, 07 Apr 2018 21:35:23 +0000, forwarding his message of Tue, 15 Nov 2016 at 12:13 PM to Melanie Spinella, a letter addressed “Leon,”. EFTA00837953 p.1. Read at the image at 700 dpi. The spellings, spacing and punctuation in the quotation are the sheet’s. The same letter also carries Epstein’s characterisations of Joslin’s health and conduct, which are not reproduced on this page. Twenty documents in the release carry the phrase “augmented his comp”; ten of them are HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_* items, which this desk’s renderer cannot reach. 2 3 4 5

  27. The same task-list line stands in the revised version of the letter at EFTA00837953 p.2, which was read at the text layer only; p.1 of that run was read at the image.

  28. Richard Kahn to Jeffrey Epstein, Fri, 27 Mar 2015 13:40:53 +0000, subject “Joslin Education Request”, and again at 14:24:25 +0000, subject “Joslin Education Invoice”, each with a scanned PDF attached; and Epstein’s reply at 14:34:56 +0000. EFTA00861275 p.1, EFTA00861276 p.1 and EFTA00861287 p.1. Text layer only; not rendered for this page. The scanned attachments are not in the release and have not been read.
