How he appears in these documentsWriting to Jeffrey Epstein in his own voice, signing “roger schank” over a link to his own website. He is the sender of record on 803 of the 1,616 documents the surname token reaches1
Described in the released files as”CEO of Socratic Arts and Managing Director of Engines for Education … Chief Education Officer of Carnegie Mellon West … Chief Learning Officer of Trump University … He founded the renowned Institute for the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University, where he is John P. Evans Professor Emeritus in Computer Science, Education, and Psychology”, in the author note of his own book, a complete copy of which sits in Epstein’s files2

A documented meetingThursday 24 April 2014, New York: “6:00pm Appt w/Roger Schank” on Lesley Groff’s day sheet. On the evening of that same day Epstein was sent a confirmation that he had enrolled in a Socratic Arts online course. The two clocks are unzoned and no interval is computed1011
A visit recorded outside the correspondenceA Palm Beach Post report on Epstein’s jail visitor log, reproduced as an exhibit in a Florida public-records action, states that Schank “paid one visit to Epstein”12
What the record does not showAny payment or transfer between them after 2002; any appearance by him on a flight manifest, at Little St. James, or at any Epstein property; any deposition, subpoena or grand-jury material naming him13

Roger Schank was an artificial-intelligence researcher. The account of his career in the documents is his own: the author note of his 2011 book Teaching Minds: How Cognitive Science Can Save Our Schools, a complete copy of which sits in Jeffrey Epstein’s files, describes him as chief executive of Socratic Arts, managing director of Engines for Education, founder of the Institute for the Learning Sciences at Northwestern University and John P. Evans Professor Emeritus there, a former chief learning officer of Trump University, and the holder of a doctorate in linguistics from the University of Texas, having taught at Yale, Paris VII and Stanford. The same note calls him a fellow of the AAAI, the founder of the Cognitive Science Society and a co-founder of the Journal of Cognitive Science, and the author of more than twenty-five books.2

Documents released by the Justice Department under the Epstein Files Transparency Act record a relationship running from at least 2002 to 2018. It begins with money: two grants from Epstein’s private foundation to Schank’s non-profit. From 2009 it becomes one of the densest correspondences in the release. Epstein and Schank wrote to each other about schooling, artificial intelligence, federal research funding, Epstein’s own reading, the people around Epstein, women, and Epstein’s travel. Schank asked Epstein for money for a school and was refused in ten minutes. He asked Epstein to have a woman ride at the New Mexico ranch, and Epstein’s assistant arranged it. He visited Epstein once in the Palm Beach County jail. In 2018, nine years after the correspondence began, Epstein was still recommending him by name to other people.

This page makes no allegation of wrongdoing against him. Nothing read for this page suggests any knowledge of or involvement in the conduct for which Epstein was charged. Schank died on 29 January 2023;14 the page names him because the documents do, and reproduces no telephone number, e-mail address, home address or other contact value belonging to him or to anyone else on the sheets it cites.

Three things to get right before reading further

First, the surname is not one person, and the page says how it was separated. The token schank reaches 1,616 documents. Of those, 1,553 also carry the phrase "Roger Schank"; the remaining 63 were each opened and read in context. Fifty-three are him under a different rendering: a courier receipt signed R.SCHANK, Epstein’s own shorthand lists, a contact list of Epstein’s on which his surname heads a block, address-book extracts taken from Epstein’s own devices, professional-network digests, messages in which third parties discuss “Schank” without his forename, academic writing about his work, and ten court filings that reproduce the newspaper article carrying his jail-visitor entry. Two are not him: a bibliography citing the biologist J. C. Schank, and a Federal Bureau of Investigation news briefing naming Hana Schank of New America. The remaining eight are sent by a second Schank, who writes to Epstein under her own name and relays Roger Schank’s movements to him, and they are counted as her acts, not his.15

Second, the sender field is the strongest thing on this subject and it still has to be read. 803 of the 1,616 documents carry a sender value containing the surname, across fifteen distinct sender strings; 1,475 of the 1,616 carry any sender value at all. That gives an act rate of 49.7% of the population and 54.4% of the documents that carry a sender value, and both figures are printed here because a rate quoted on one denominator alone is not comparable with any other subject’s.16 But a high sender rate says he wrote, not that what he wrote matters, and the documents behind these numbers are heavily duplicated: the same message is often produced in four or five copies.

Third, the subject line “Jeffrey Epstein” is the office’s, not his. It is the second-commonest subject shape in the population, on 36 documents, and on the ones read for this page it is a scheduling formula: Epstein’s assistants headed messages sent on his behalf with his name, so Re: Jeffrey Epstein is an answer to a meeting request and not a discussion of him. It is a good index of when Epstein’s office was actively trying to reach Schank and a bad index of what either man thought.17

2002: the foundation money, and a package

The earliest transaction between them in the release is not a message. The C.O.U.Q. Foundation, Inc., Epstein’s private charitable foundation, filed a Form 990-PF for the year ending 28 February 2003. Statement 2 to that return, headed “CONTRIBUTIONS PAID / UNRESTRICTED - CASH”, lists eighteen payments totalling $1,245,000. Two of them are to Engines for Education: $62,500 on 14 May 2002 and $62,500 on 20 June 2002.3

Engines for Education is Schank’s non-profit. He says so himself, in the book in Epstein’s files: writing about who will pay for the kind of schooling he wants, he says “The health sciences curriculum that we built was funded by the Ewing Kauffman Foundation. We built it using our not-for-profit com-pany, Engines for Education.”18 The company’s letterhead confirms the pairing from the other direction: a member of his staff signs her messages “Socratic Arts, Inc. / Engines for Education, Inc.”19

$125,000 in a single tax year places him, in 2002, in the same schedule as Harvard, MIT, the Santa Fe Institute, the Dalton School and the Edge Foundation. The release holds no correspondence from 2002, no grant application, no report to the foundation and no later grant to him: "Engines for Education" returns nine documents in the whole index, and no schedule of any other year names it.18

One further 2002 record survives. A courier manifest records a package delivered on 3 April 2002 from sender J EPSTEIN, at Epstein’s 457 Madison Avenue office, signed for by “R.SCHANK”. The sheet records a delivery and not its contents; nothing on it says what was sent.20

The correspondence, 2009 to 2018

The dated documents in the population run from 10 April 2009 to 2 March 2018 and are heavily concentrated in the middle: 352 documents dated 2009, 233 in 2010, 270 in 2011, 176 in 2012, 253 in 2013, 132 in 2014, 73 in 2015, and then 15, 8 and 6 in 2016, 2017 and 2018.21

The subject lines are short and mostly bare: 248 documents carry the subject Re: and nothing else, and 542 distinct subject shapes appear in all. What survives of the substance, in the documents read for this page, is a two-man conversation of unusual range: schooling, the failures of the American education system, artificial intelligence and its history, federal research money, Israel, Saudi Arabia, Epstein’s health, Schank’s health, and Epstein’s own reading.17

18 July 2010: the ask, and the refusal

On Sunday 18 July 2010, at 13:47:58 +0000 by the produced header, Schank wrote to Epstein under the subject “after yesterday”:

I have said I don’t want your money but I changed my mind after yesterday; I have been trying to build my first grade on volunteer labor and it isn’t working; I need it to be ready to go in Brooklyn by Sept 2011; I realized yesterday that, although your fantasy island commune is just that, you will in fact someday do something like it; and then you too will need the school I want to build: but I need it now: first grade will cost about 150K to build which is within your normal academic contribution range I think; so I am asking you for it;

Below it, under the heading “First Grade” and his own name, he set out the school: “Twelve boys each paying $12,500 per year, meet with one teacher in a rented room in Park Slope. The curriculum they study is entirely project-based.” The activity list runs to fifteen items, from robot building to trip planning.6

Epstein answered at 13:58:17 +0000, the same clock, ten minutes and nineteen seconds later, with three words:

Not for me

and nothing else above the quoted message.7

Two things in Schank’s message are worth separating from the request. The first is the phrase “your fantasy island commune”, written by a correspondent to Epstein’s face in July 2010. The page does not assert what Schank understood that phrase to mean. The second is the sentence that opens it: “I have said I don’t want your money but I changed my mind”, a statement, in his own words, that declining Epstein’s money had been his position until that day. Both stand as he wrote them.

The school proposal was not new. Seven months earlier, on 18 December 2009, he had sent Epstein an almost identical “First Grade” description under a subject line the sheet prints as “I decided thaw (who is now 4) and moving back to Brooklyn should attend Grandview”. The earlier version has the twelve boys going to Grandview Prep in Boca Raton, Florida.22 The release holds no document showing that Epstein ever funded either version, and the phrases "first grade" with "park slope" return three documents, all three copies of the July 2010 exchange.13

What Epstein asked of him

The traffic runs the other way at least as often. In the documents read for this page, Epstein used Schank as a reader of other people and of federal money.

On 15 July 2009, Schank told Epstein he was going to Washington to speak to the Army about artificial intelligence. Epstein wrote back: “the armyis not intersted in smart, they are intersted in leaders, strategists, i want you to get your funding„ so i would ask more questions of them first..” Schank’s reply accepts the framing, “the idea is to talk about leaders while actually talking about AI; I dont much see the difference anyhow”, and asks “anyone I should meet in DC while there?”23

On 21 September 2011, Epstein sent him a bare link to a federal business-opportunities solicitation under the subject “is this your stuff”. Schank: “no; it certainly is derived from my stuff, but I have learned not to apply to arpa and instead let arpa come to me i dont know the folks at at iarpa darpa is funding me on my story stuff”.9

In February 2013 Epstein asked him a “weird question” and Schank canvassed his own former students on Epstein’s behalf, writing “my billionaire friend now wants”. That episode is already carried on ben-goertzel, where the canvass and Schank’s four-line rebuke of Epstein for forwarding it badly are set out in full.8

In April 2017 the cognitive scientist Marc Hauser wrote to Schank out of the blue: “We met a while back at Jeffrey Epstein’s house in Florida. I have been reading your Teaching Minds over the past month and think it is terrific.” Schank forwarded it to Epstein with “I really dont recall meeting him; why did that happen? is he ok?”. Epstein’s entire reply is one word, and he spells it as printed:

Plagerism

Hauser’s message, quoted in full on the sheet, describes leaving academia in 2011 and founding a company working with about seventy-five schools.24

January 2011: Zorro Ranch

On Wednesday 5 January 2011 Schank wrote to Epstein under the one-word subject “zorro”. The message is four lines long and concerns a woman then travelling to Santa Fe who wanted to ride at the ranch on the Saturday. The producing party has covered her name with a bar at the head of the body; this page does not supply it and does not assert who she is.25

Epstein forwarded the message the same minute.26 The following morning Schank wrote again, the whole message being “ok?”, and Epstein forwarded that too. Sarah Kellen answered Epstein directly: “I am coordinating with Roger and the ranch..”27

That is the whole of the exchange in the documents read for this page.

Meetings

Schank appears in Epstein’s own schedule. On Wednesday 23 April 2014, Lesley Groff sent Epstein the next day’s New York diary; the last line reads “6:00pm Appt w/Roger Schank”, following appointments with an Apple consultant, a tentative lunch with Leon Black, and three further appointments involving five other people.10

At 6:54:12 PM on that same Thursday, 24 April 2014, a message from “Student Support” reached Epstein’s own address:

Dear Jeffrey,

Thank you for enrolling in Introduction to Website Development from Socratic Arts.

Neither timestamp carries a zone, so no interval between them is computed here; what the two sheets establish together is that Epstein had an evening appointment with Schank in New York and was enrolled in a course sold by Schank’s company on the same day.1011

Other meetings are recorded in passing. On 20 April 2014 a message to Epstein asked “What would you like for dinner tonight with Botstein and Schank”.28 On 3 March 2013 Epstein wrote to Joscha Bach “are you free to skype now.. im sitting with schank?”29 A message on a separate document records that a caller “is confirmed to come see you at 2:00 along with Mark Tramo and =oger Schank”. The forename is printed with export damage and is reproduced here as the sheets print it.30

Women

Two exchanges in the population are about women and are quoted here because they are the men’s own words.

On 4 January 2010 Schank wrote to Epstein under the subject “there is a simpler explanation about women and intelligence”:

intelligence comes about in part from real focus (goal-directed behavior); (this is why you have the absent minded professor caricature)

it is a rare woman who is not first and foremost focussed on what others are thinking and feeling about her

hard to be brilliant if you are worrying if you look fat or why another woman hates you or why you dont own a kelly bag

Epstein replied the same day:

It’s the tail of distribution , no really smart women ---none

Schank’s answer to that pushed back on the absolute and then withdrew the objection: “wrong; one; my very best PhD student was female; smartest woman I ever knew”, followed by an account of her leaving the profession.31

On 21 June 2011, under the bare subject “women”, Schank wrote a single line: “i get it now; you have been right all along”. Epstein’s reply asks where he is; Schank answers “corfu”; Epstein then writes a line about a person he wants reminding of on Schank’s return. Nothing in the thread says what proposition Schank was conceding, and this page does not supply one.32

The island and Brunei

What the release records here is mostly what was written to Schank about the island, and one phrase he wrote back. On 7 February 2013 Epstein wrote to him “island ., be home week of 21 see you ?”33 Three months later, on 7 May 2013, Epstein forwarded him a reply he had just received from Joel Klein in an exchange about core curriculum; Klein’s message closes “Enjoy your Island!” over “Sent from my iPad”. Those words are Klein’s, not Schank’s. Schank’s own message on that sheet is a disagreement about reading, “wrong; complex texts are beyond most kids”, and says nothing about an island.34

His own reference to one is earlier, and he made it to Epstein’s face: the July 2010 message quoted above, in which he wrote that “your fantasy island commune is just that”. This page does not assert what he understood either phrase to mean, and no document read for it records him visiting any island; the island and travel searches behind that statement are printed in full below.13

Earlier, on 5 November 2009, the two of them ran a short exchange, and the line that matters most in it is not the one that reads best. At 7:46 that morning, on a clock quoted without a zone, Epstein wrote to Schank: “no travel allowed , at least for now sorry”. At 9:27 Schank wrote “i was invited to brunei” and, on the next line, “something tells me you know the main dude there”. Epstein’s answer, timed 14:33:07 +0000, is the whole of his message:

an island of incest creations

The page does not assert what he meant by it, and does not assert that the phrase refers to any place other than Brunei, to which Schank’s message refers.35

schank AND "little st james" returns 0 documents; schank AND gulfstream returns 0; schank AND (flight OR manifest) returns 25, all 25 inside the floor and all 25 opened, and every one is an office day sheet on which the travel lines belong to other people.13

The Palm Beach jail visit

A Palm Beach Post article, reproduced as an exhibit in the Florida public-records action CA Florida Holdings, LLC, Publisher of The Palm Beach Post v. Dave Aronberg, as State Attorney of Palm Beach County in the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit, lists people who visited Epstein in the Palm Beach County jail during a July while he was serving his 2008 sentence. Its entry for Schank reads, at the image:

Roger Schank, 62, founder of the Institute for Learning Sciences at Northwestern University and an expert on artificial intelligence, paid one visit to Epstein. Schank has written numerous books on that subject and has a doctorate degree from Yale University in linguistics. He was one of 19 people who applied to be president of Florida Atlantic University in 2003. He became “chief learning officer” at the online Trump University in 2005. Schank listed his address as being in Stuart, and records show he also owns a home in Lake Worth.

This is a newspaper’s account of a jail visitor’s log, not the log. The underlying record is not in the documents read for this page, and no document read here carries Schank’s own account of the visit. The entry is quoted to its end. Its closing sentence is the only part of it that places him anywhere, so stopping before it would drop the one line running against him while keeping the rest; the two Florida place names it gives are printed in a newspaper article inside a public court filing, and no street address appears in the entry or on this page. On the copy cited here the corpus text layer renders the entry’s first reference to him as “Schenk”; at the image the sheet prints “Roger Schank”, and the image is authoritative.12

The same entry places him, in 2003, among nineteen applicants for the presidency of Florida Atlantic University, and, from 2005, as chief learning officer of Trump University, the second of which his own book states as well.2

After the sentence

On 14 July 2010, six days before the ask and the refusal, a member of Schank’s own staff wrote to him: “NY post article said next week he’s a free man and will be moving to Dubai! Did you know he was moving there?” Schank forwarded it to Epstein with one word, “dubai?”, and Epstein answered:

after i get married

Schank’s reply is “aha”.19

The last dated contact in the population is not between them. On 2 March 2018, at 03:04:07 +0000, Epstein wrote to a third party, Michael Link, about arranging a date and added:

maybe around th 18th, did you read roger shcank on education.?

The sentence is preserved in fourteen copies across the release. Every one of the fourteen carries the surname transposed as shcank, and on the copy read at the image the transposition is printed on the sheet. It is Epstein’s own typing, not a scanner fault, which is why no query on the correct spelling reaches any of them.5

What the record does not show

No document read for this page shows any payment, wire, invoice or transfer between Epstein or any Epstein entity and Schank, Socratic Arts or Engines for Education after the two 2002 foundation grants. schank AND (wire OR "wire transfer") returns 2 documents, both read, both messages about a machine Schank wanted to buy. "socratic arts" AND wire returns 0. schank AND invoice returns 2, both read, neither an invoice to or from him.13

No document read for this page places him on an aircraft, at Little St. James, or at any Epstein property. schank AND deposition, schank AND subpoena and schank AND "grand jury" each return 0 documents.13

schank AND massage returns 12 documents; all twelve were opened. Every one is a copy of, or a court filing reproducing, the same Palm Beach Post jail-visitor article quoted above, including EFTA02735689, the copy this page cites for that entry. The token schank in them is his own surname in his own entry, and the token massage does not occur in that entry. The conjunction is a document-level match between two tokens; it is not evidence of anything about him, and no document read for this page connects him to the conduct those filings concern.15

No response by Schank to the release, and no public statement by him about Epstein after 2019, was located in the documents read for this page; this page does not assert that none exists.

How the population was measured

The floor is 1,680 documents, and the arithmetic behind it is stated here rather than asserted. It is the surname token’s 1,616 documents plus 64 documents that no clean name form reaches, each of which was opened and read: 55 of them were identified from the context printed around the matched token, and the remaining nine carried no such context and were opened page by page before being assigned. One further document was opened the same way and is not him, and is not counted. Eighty-three documents outside the base were returned by the probes in all; nineteen of them belong to other people and are described in the note below.

The floor is the reach of the search forms, not a count of documents about him. Inside the 1,616 sit two documents that belong to J. C. Schank and to Hana Schank, so 1,678 is the number of documents in the floor that concern him or his office, and eight of those are the second Schank’s acts rather than his. No convergence is claimed. The bounds on the floor are: the enumeration was run over prefix ranges and not over the whole index, so a term with two errors in its first two characters is outside its reach; the forename was not mined as a population; and no arm was run against the House Oversight production’s images. The forms and their counts, including the zeros, are in the notes below, and the method is reproducible from them.13637

  • jeffrey-epstein
  • couq-foundation: the foundation that made the 2002 grants
  • ben-goertzel: the February 2013 canvass of Schank’s former students
  • bruce-moskowitz: Schank’s October 2011 message about his own hospital admission
  • charles-harper: a June 2010 message from Harper to Schank copied to Epstein
  • lesley-groff: the day sheets on which his appointments appear
  • sarah-kellen: the January 2011 ranch arrangement
  • marvin-minsky: named beside Schank in third parties’ assessments of artificial intelligence

Notes

Footnotes

  1. Population measured 2026-09-16 against the full-text index pages_fts, counted as distinct efta_number values with no LIMIT applied and with every query scoped to text_content. Clean name forms and their returns: schank (bare token) 1,616; "Roger Schank" 1,553; "Schank Roger" (field-reversed) 38; roger (bare forename) 3,431; "Roger C. Schank" 13; "Roger C Schank" 13; "Schank s" 20; schanks 2; "Professor Schank" 1; "Dr. Schank" 0. The bare forename is not usable as a population here — it is a common word in this corpus and returns more than twice the surname — and no document was taken from it. The surname token is the base. 63 documents carry the surname and not the phrase "Roger Schank"; each of the 63 was opened and read in context (see [^homograph]). Floor: base 1,616 plus 64 documents reached only by damaged forms or by harvested identifiers and individually read, = 1,680. Production split of the 64: 62 EFTA, 2 HOUSE_OVERSIGHT (HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_023960 and _023967). This is a floor. It is not a convergence claim, and the bounds are: no whole-index enumeration was run, only prefix ranges; the forename was not mined; and the ten-document residue described in [^homograph] is the only class read exhaustively. 2 3

  2. EFTA01120099 p. 239 of the run, which is the book’s own printed p. 223. Read at the image at 400 dpi. The document is a complete 240-sheet copy of Roger Schank, Teaching Minds: How Cognitive Science Can Save Our Schools, in Epstein’s files. The sheet is headed “About the Author” under an ammonite device and prints the note in a single justified paragraph with “Roger Schank” in bold at its head and the journal title in italic; the quoted span is transcribed from the image and no character of it is repaired, because the image carries no damage in it. The corpus text layer of this sheet does carry damage that the image does not — it renders “Trump University” as 'frump University — and that damage is recorded here as a finding aid, since a query on the correct spelling does not return this sheet for that phrase. (The literal sCHANK corruption occurs on run p. 3, the title sheet, and not on this one; it is recorded under the sheet it is actually on.) The publisher’s imprint is taken from the copyright sheet, p. 4 of the run, UNVERIFIED at the image, whose extraction reads “Published by Teachers College Press, 1234 Amsterdam Avenue, New York, NY 10027” and “Copyright … 2011 by Roger Schank”. Two single-sheet copies of these pages exist in the House Oversight production: HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_023969 carries the author note and HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_023960 the funding passage. 2 3

  3. EFTA00224262 p. 80. Read at the image at 400 dpi. The sheet is headed “THE C.O.U.Q. FOUNDATION, INC.. / FORM 990-PF Y/E 2/28/03 / STATEMENT 2 / PART I, LINE 25 AND PART LINE 3 / CONTRIBUTIONS PAID”, with the column headed “UNRESTRICTED - CASH”. Eighteen rows, with “Engines for Education 62,500” at 5/14/02 and again at 6/20/02. The eighteen printed amounts sum to exactly the printed total of 1,245,000, which settles the count without reference to anyone’s eyesight; the text layers of both copies carry the same eighteen rows and render the column heading UNRESTRICTED -CASH. No value on the sheet is barred and no bar appears anywhere on it. The foundation’s own page already carried this schedule before this page was written and cites the second copy, EFTA00192298 p. 140. 2

  4. The earliest dated correspondence located is EFTA00748681, 10 April 2009, subject “Q2 research plans; embodied NL disambiguation”, in which a third party discusses Schank’s views without writing to him. The earliest message he sends is EFTA00748777, 14 April 2009, subject “pesach in stuart”. Both UNVERIFIED at the image; both dates are from the producer’s date field and not from a header read on a sheet, and the body of this page prints no date from either.

  5. EFTA00871775 p. 1. Read at the image at 400 dpi. From: "jeffrey E." <[email protected]>, To: Michael Link <▮>, Subject: Re:, Date: Fri, 02 Mar 2018 03:04:07 +0000zoned. The sentence quoted is the whole of Epstein’s message above the quoted reply; the sheet sets a run of spaces after the comma which the blockquote above renders as one, and nothing else of it is altered. Only the two address values in the header and the quoted header are barred. The transposition shcank is printed on the sheet: it is the sender’s own typing and not an extraction fault, which is what makes the fourteen copies uniform. Fourteen copies of it are in the release and every one prints the transposition shcank: EFTA00866078, _00866148, _00866164, _00866176, _00871775, _00871796, _00871799, EFTA02512546, _02512955, _02513429, _02514046, _02518995, _02519165 and _02519184. Thirteen of the fourteen are returned by the phrase "roger shcank on education"; the fourteenth, EFTA02512546, carries quoted-printable damage across the forename (ro=er shcank) and is reached only by the bare token. This is the transposition described at [^variants], and it is the reason the last thing Epstein is recorded saying about him is invisible to every correctly spelled query. 2

The header carries an explicit zone and is directly comparable with the reply. The body is printed in black to “description below”, then the heading “First Grade” and the name “Roger Schank” in black, then the school description in blue. The sheet prints races if contests, which is the sender’s own typing and is not repaired here. The activity list runs across two continuation sheets and comes to fifteen items: Robot building, Airplane building, Bridge Building, Kite Flying, City Planning, Food Preparation, Map Drawing, Football, Basketball, Soccer, and Baseball, Newsletter Writing, Computer Use, Diagnosis of Illness and Treatment of Animals, Orchestra, Spanish language, Movie Making — fourteen on p. 2 — and Trip Planning, which stands on p. 3 over his name. 2

Both this header and the one at [^ask] carry +0000, so the ten-minute-nineteen-second interval is a measurement on one clock. The quoted header inside the body reads “On Sun, Jul 18, 2010 at 9:47 AM” and carries no zone; it is not used here. “Not for me” stands alone above the quoted message, and nothing else of Epstein’s appears on the sheet. 2

  8. The February 2013 canvass is set out with its documents on ben-goertzel, which cites EFTA00641693 and EFTA01906408. Nothing is re-derived here and this page adds no new claim about it. 2

  9. EFTA02021249 p. 1. Read at the image at 400 dpi. From: roger schank, Sent: Wed 9/21/2011 11:25:32 AM, unzoned, Subject: Re: is this your stuff. Schank is the sender of the sheet and the quoted words are his; below his message the sheet prints On Sep 21, 2011, at 7:11 AM, Jeffrey Epstein wrote: over a bare fbo.gov solicitation URL and no other text of Epstein’s. Schank’s reply is quoted as it prints, including at at iarpa; it stands on the sheet as three short lines and the hard line breaks are not reproduced here. No value on the sheet is barred. 2

  10. EFTA00662791 p. 1. Read at the image at 400 dpi. From Lesley Groff to Epstein, Subject: Leon Black, Date: Wed, 23 Apr 2014 14:06:49 +0000zoned. The diary block below is headed “Thurs. The clock times carry no zone. No contact value from this sheet is reproduced here. 2 3

  11. EFTA01929981 p. 1. Read at the image at 400 dpi. To: [email protected], From: Student Support, Sent: Thur 4/24/2014 6:54:12 PMno zone on the sheet, and none is supplied hereSubject: Thank you for enrolling in Introduction to Website Development from Socratic Arts. The body opens “Dear Jeffrey,” and names the course in bold. No value on the sheet is barred. A companion notification creating the account is at EFTA01929942, Sent: Thur 4/24/2014 6:54:12 PM, also unzoned. The two sheets establish the date, not an interval: the day-sheet clock at [^daysheet] is unzoned as well, and no arithmetic is done across them. 2

  12. EFTA02735689 printed p. 77, Bates EFTA02735765. Read at the image at 400 dpi. The document is a 160-page filing in CA Florida Holdings, LLC, Publisher of The Palm Beach Post v. Dave Aronberg, as State Attorney of Palm Beach County, Circuit Court of the Fifteenth Judicial Circuit in and for Palm Beach County, Florida, and the sheet is stamped “NOT A CERTIFIED COPY” across its face and footed “FILED: PALM BEACH COUNTY, FL, ▮ ABRUZZO, CLERK. 3/28/2023 1:04:39 PM”. The image prints “Roger Schank” in the entry’s first line; the corpus text layer renders it “Roger Schenk”, and the image is authoritative. The quoted entry is the last of several on the sheet, is set off by a dash, and carries no bar of any kind; the entries above it concern other people and are not reproduced, characterised or connected to this one here. The article gives no year for the July it describes and this page supplies none. This is a newspaper’s account of a jail visitor’s log; the log itself is not among the documents read for this page. 2

  13. Absence tests. Each test’s disconfirming document was described before the query was written, and the forms are printed so the tests can be re-run. Would a later payment look like a wire instruction, an invoice, a grant letter or a contribution schedule? schank AND (wire OR "wire transfer")2 documents, both inside the floor, both opened, both messages about a piece of equipment he wanted to buy in Canada. schank AND invoice2, both opened, neither an invoice to or from him. "socratic arts" AND wire0. "engines for education" AND (grant OR contribution)1, the foundation return already cited. Would a school payment look like the school’s own vocabulary? "first grade" AND "park slope"3, all three copies of the July 2010 exchange. Would travel look like a manifest, a tail number or a property name? schank AND "little st james"0; schank AND gulfstream0; schank AND (flight OR manifest)25, all 25 inside the floor, all 25 opened, every one an Epstein-office day sheet whose travel lines concern other people and other days; schank AND island18, all 18 inside the floor, all 18 opened, and they are the six exchanges described in the body plus their copies. Would legal process look like a deposition, a subpoena or a grand jury? schank AND deposition0; schank AND subpoena0; schank AND "grand jury"0. schank AND massage12, all 12 opened, every one a copy of, or a court filing reproducing, the Palm Beach Post jail-visitor article quoted in the body — including the copy this page cites for that entry — in which the token schank is his own surname in his own entry, and in which the other token does not occur in that entry (see [^homograph]). schank AND birthday3, all opened, none a birthday-book entry. 2 3 4 5 6

  14. Outside source, fetched and verified against the fetched text. A syndicated reprint of an obituary carried by dtnext on 22 February 2023, https://www.dtnext.in/edit/2023/02/22/in-memoriam-roger-c-schank-theorist-of-artificial-intelligence-dies-at-76, reads: “Roger C Schank, a scientist who made influential contributions to the field of artificial intelligence and then, as an academic, author and entrepreneur, focused on how people learn, died on Jan. 29 in Shelburne, Vt. He was 76.” The University of Texas at Austin’s linguistics department carries a notice headed “Roger Schank (1946-2023)”, which agrees on the years and gives nothing further; it was fetched and its body carries no further biographical text. No date of birth is reproduced here. This is the only fact on this page taken from outside the release.

  15. How homographs were separated, 2026-09-16. Of the 1,616 documents reached by the token schank, 1,553 also carry the phrase "Roger Schank" and 63 do not; all 63 were opened and the context around every occurrence of the token was read. Fifty-three are him: a courier delivery receipt signed R.SCHANK; Epstein’s own bare-forename shorthand lists; two sheets of one of Epstein’s own contact lists, on which his surname heads a block whose values are not reproduced here; three address-book extracts taken from Epstein’s devices, in which his name stands as a contact record; six professional-network digests in which his name appears among suggested connections; eight messages in which third parties discuss “Schank” by surname alone, among them Ben Goertzel and a correspondent writing “your semi- senile friend Schank”; four copies of one correspondent’s line “Schank will back me up”; office messages about dinner, about a Skype call and about a request made to his office; academic and technical writing discussing his published work; export-damaged renderings of his forename as =oger; and ten court filings that reproduce the Palm Beach Post jail-visitor article carrying his own entry. Two are not him: (i) J. C. Schank, cited in a bibliography of cooperation modelling; (ii) Hana Schank of New America, named in an FBI public-affairs news briefing of 20 July 2020. The remaining eight are sent by a second Schank, who writes to Epstein under her own name; those eight are counted as her acts and not his, and this page names her in no other connection. No document among the 63 is a case in which the token is scanner damage, and the ten Palm Beach filings are in the first class and not the second: the token in them is his surname, correctly printed, in the entry this page quotes. The classification sums to its population: 53 + 2 + 8 = 63. A count is not an identification, and these 1,616 were not treated as one person until the 63 were read. 2

  16. Act rate measured 2026-09-16 over the 1,616-document surname base, from the doc_search.sender field, case-folded, with both denominators printed because a rate on one denominator alone is not comparable across subjects. Documents in the base carrying any sender value at all: 1,475. Documents whose sender value contains schank: 803, across fifteen distinct sender strings — Roger Schank 741, roger schank 43, Annie Schank 5, annie schank 2, Roger Schank via Linkedln 2, and ten further strings at one document each, of which four are export damage (roger schankMMINIMEMM, roger schanIc, roger schank . I, roger schank .: ,•), one is a header run into the sender field, two are “on behalf of” renderings of his own name, one is annie schank via Linkedln, and one is a 32-name mailing list on which his name is the seventeenth. Act rate: 803 / 1,616 = 49.7% of the population; 803 / 1,475 = 54.4% of the documents carrying any sender value. Subtracting the eight documents sent by the second Schank and the one mailing list gives 794 / 1,616 = 49.1% and 794 / 1,475 = 53.8%. Epstein himself is the sender on 490 documents in the same base. (The lead triage that commissioned this page gave 784 sending documents, from the two exact-case forms Roger Schank and roger schank alone; the case-folded field match is 803, and the difference is the thirteen further sender strings enumerated above.)

  17. Counted 2026-09-16 from the doc_search.subject field over the surname base: 542 distinct subject shapes across the 1,373 documents that carry one. The commonest are Re: (248), Re: Jeffrey Epstein (36), Re: Re: (30), Re: ?? (13), Re: how (12), Re: you (11), Re: Re: Re: (11), Re: fyi (11), Re: Dinner w/Jeffrey Epstein April 20th? (11), Jeffrey Epstein (10) and zorro (10). The Jeffrey Epstein and Re: Jeffrey Epstein shapes were read before being characterised: on the documents read for this page they are Epstein’s office’s own scheduling formula, not a discussion of him. 2

  18. EFTA01120099 printed p. 230, and the single-sheet House Oversight copy HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_023960 p. 1, which prints the same passage with proper typographic quotation marks where the EFTA copy’s extraction gives plain ones. UNVERIFIED at the image; quoted from the text layer with its line-break hyphen (com-pany) preserved as it prints. The complete return of the arm: "Engines for Education" reaches nine documents — the two foundation returns, the prospectus at [^prospectus], two copies of the Dubai exchange at [^dubai], the book, its two House Oversight sheets, and the House Oversight row _023731, whose corpus row is a container merge of about 484,000 characters rather than a page: it holds a further copy of the book and is not a separate copy of the funding passage. Nothing on this page rests on its text layer. 2

  19. EFTA00739159 p. 1. Read at the image at 400 dpi. Produced header: From: roger schank <▮>, To: Jeffrey Epstein <▮>, Subject: Re: Jeffrey epstein, Date: Wed, 14 Jul 2010 10:50:17 +0000zoned. Schank’s word “aha” stands alone at the top. Below it, quoted and unzoned: “On Jul 14, 2010, at 6:49 AM, Jeffrey Epstein wrote: / after i get married” and “On Wed, Jul 14, 2010 at 6:48 AM, roger schank <▮> wrote: / dubai?”. Below that, the forwarded original, in bold on the sheet: From: Patti Perrelli <▮>, Date: July 14, 2010 5:41:28 AM EDT (CA)zonedTo: roger Schank <▮>, Subject: Jeffrey epstein, reading “NY post article said next week he’s a free man and will be moving to Dubai! Did you know he was moving there?” over a signature block giving her name and both company names in printed type. The page names the sender because her name and her employer are unbarred in her own signature block on this sheet, and takes nothing else from it. 2

  20. EFTA00217535 p. 6 of 10. Read at the image at 400 dpi. A FedEx Express payment-type detail dated 15 April 2002. The entry reads Delivered Apr 03, 2002 14:41 … Signed by R.SCHANK, with Sender J EPSTEIN / JEFFREY E EPSTEIN / 457 MADISON AVE. No reference, tracking or account value from this sheet is reproduced here. The sheet records a delivery and a signature and says nothing about contents; this page asserts nothing further from it. The recipient name prints unbarred as ROGER SCHANK; the document sits outside the "Roger Schank" phrase population because the extraction renders that name with damage, not because the forename is absent from the sheet.

  21. Counted 2026-09-16 from the doc_search.email_date field over the 1,616-document surname base. 1,525 of the 1,616 carry a date value. By year: 2009 352, 2010 233, 2011 270, 2012 176, 2013 253, 2014 132, 2015 73, 2016 15, 2017 8, 2018 6. Seven further rows carry values that are not dates of correspondence between them, and they are enumerated here because the arithmetic has to close: three reading 1990-01-01, one reading 4501-01-01, one 2020-07-20 (the FBI news briefing naming Hana Schank), one 2023-01-04, and one 2007-09-24 on EFTA00184224, a 982-page court filing in Jane Doe 1 and Jane Doe 2 v. United States. The ten years above sum to 1,518, and 1,518 + 7 = 1,525. The field is the producer’s, not the sheet’s, and the body of this page takes no date from it.

  22. EFTA02433065 p. 1, Sent: Fri 12/18/2009 9:16:57 PM, unzoned, subject printed as “I decided thaw (who is now 4) and moving back to Brooklyn should attend Grandview”. UNVERIFIED at the image. The subject line is damaged in the extraction and is reproduced as it prints; a name appears to be missing between “that” and “(who is now 4)” and this page does not supply one. "Grandview Preparatory" returns 0 documents; the bare token Grandview returns 36, of which 15 lie outside the surname base and were not read.

  23. Two copies of a 15 July 2009 exchange: EFTA02440033 p. 1, read at the image at 400 dpi, and EFTA01829687 p. 1, UNVERIFIED at the image. Produced header on the sheet read: To: Jeffrey Epstein[[email protected]], From: roger schank, Sent: Wed 7/15/2009 1:28:37 PM, Subject: Re: back in the ussr. The sheet carries five messages, not three, and it reads bottom-up: Schank at 9:05 AM, Epstein at 9:13 AM, Schank at 9:17 AM, Epstein at 9:23 AM, and Schank’s own message at the head at 1:28:37 PM. All five clock times are unzoned and no interval is computed here. The two quotations above are taken from the fourth and fifth of those messages respectively, each a contiguous run on the sheet, in the order the sheet prints them; Epstein’s is quoted as printed, with armyis run together and the double comma after funding intact, and Schank’s two quoted fragments are separated on the page by its own prose rather than joined inside one pair of quotation marks. The two earliest messages are not quoted here.

  24. EFTA01049549 p. 1. Read at the image at 400 dpi. Produced header: From: "jeffrey E." <[email protected]>, To: roger schank <▮>, Subject: Re: connecting on education, Date: Wed, 12 Apr 2017 14:32:01 +0000. Epstein’s reply is the single word Plagerism, spelt as printed, on the first line of the body. Schank’s forwarded line sits below it, and Marc Hauser’s message below that, in blue, dated on the sheet April 11, 2017 at 6:57:50 PM GMT-4zoned — with the sender address and one recipient value barred. The signature block reads “Marc Hauser / President, Risk-Eraser”. This page states no conclusion about what Epstein meant by the word.

  25. EFTA00628313 p. 1. Read at the image at 400 dpi. Produced header: From: roger schank <▮>, To: jeffrey epstein <▮>, Subject: zorro, Date: Wed, 05 Jan 2011 12:42:16 +0000zoned. Both address values are barred. A short solid bar stands at the head of the body, before the first legible word, and the sheet is otherwise clear. The message closes “thanks / roger” over his signature block. The body of this page paraphrases rather than quotes this message, deliberately: the message’s own wording is a handle to its other copies, and the page declines to supply one.

  26. EFTA00879070 p. 1, Epstein’s forward of the same message, Date: Wed, 05 Jan 2011 12:44:01 +0000zoned, two minutes after the message it forwards, on the same clock. UNVERIFIED at the image. The recipient value is not printed in the extraction and this page does not say who it was sent to.

  27. EFTA00560436 p. 1, Date: Thu, 06 Jan 2011 15:47:40 +0000zoned — from Sarah Kellen to Epstein, quoting his 07:31 forward of Schank’s second message. UNVERIFIED at the image. Her sender name prints in the extraction as Sarah K fr, which is export damage on the surname; a second copy at EFTA00560437 also prints only the forename and initial, with the address barred. She is identified here from her live page on this wiki, not from a surname printed on either copy. Schank’s second message, the whole of which is “ok?”, is at EFTA00676317 p. 1, read at the image at 400 dpi, Date: Thu, 06 Jan 2011 12:30:21 +0000, zoned. The sender address is under a bar; the recipient value is unbarred; the body carries no bar. The whole body is the word “ok?” over his signature block.

  28. EFTA00696173 p. 1 and EFTA00988445 p. 1. UNVERIFIED at the image. The second copy carries the quoted date “April 20, 2014”; the first carries a produced header timed 03:06 +0000. The other person named on the line is given as “Botstein” and this page does not identify him further.

  29. EFTA00955398 p. 1, Date: Sun, 03 Mar 2013 15:32:41 +0000zoned; a second copy at EFTA01901100 gives the same moment as Sun 3/3/2013 3:32:41 PM, unzoned. Both extractions print the recipient, who is named on the sheets.

  30. EFTA01803455 p. 1, EFTA02545472 p. 1 and EFTA02694664 p. 1, three copies of one message. EFTA01803455 p. 1 read at the image at 400 dpi; the other two copies UNVERIFIED at the image. The sheet prints the forename with quoted-printable damage as =oger Schank, and the body quotation above reproduces that damage rather than repairing it. On this index = is a token separator, so =oger Schank resolves to the same token run as oger Schank, which returns 16 documents — a narrower set than the clean phrase, and the reason the damaged form is recorded here as a finding aid rather than treated as the reading.

  31. Three documents, 4 January 2010. Schank’s message: EFTA02432182 p. 1, read at the image at 400 dpi, To: jeffrey epstein[[email protected]], From: roger schank, Sent: Mon 1/4/2010 12:15:13 PMunzonedSubject: there is a simpler explanation about women and intelligence. No value on the sheet is barred, the sender field carries the name and no address, and the three quoted paragraphs are set in a monospaced face with the internal double spaces the sender typed. The body quotation is transcribed from this sheet, not from the quoted block on the reply. Epstein’s reply: EFTA02367904 p. 1, read at the image at 400 dpi, Sent: Monday, January 4, 2010 12:28 PM, unzoned, the body reading “It’s the tail of distribution , no really smart women ---none” above “Sent from my iPhone” and the quoted original. Schank’s answer: EFTA02432170 p. 1, Sent: Mon 1/4/2010 12:53:33 PM, unzoned, UNVERIFIED at the image. The reply sheet also carries the original inside a >-marked quoted block; the words agree with the original sheet character for character, and the hard line breaks of neither are reproduced here. No clock arithmetic is performed across these sheets because none of the three stamps carries a zone.

  32. EFTA00635387 p. 1, Date: Tue, 21 Jun 2011 10:21:59 +0000zoned — the whole message being “i get it now; you have been right all along”; EFTA00913797 p. 1, Epstein at 11:11:44 +0000; EFTA00629451 p. 1, Schank at 10:56:30 +0000 answering “corfu”. All UNVERIFIED at the image. Epstein’s 11:11 line names a person and asks to be reminded of her; that name is not reproduced here and this page asserts nothing about her. One copy of the thread, EFTA01986388, carries a telephone-shaped value in the body position where the other copies carry a word; no value from that sheet is reproduced.

  33. EFTA01906866 p. 1, Sent: Thur 2/7/2013 7:59:13 PM, unzoned, subject “Re: still in saudi”; the same message is quoted in three further copies as “On Feb 7, 2013, at 10:59 PM”, also unzoned, which is a second clock and is why no time is printed in the body. UNVERIFIED at the image. The surrounding thread includes a line about a member of Schank’s family in hospital, which is not reproduced.

  34. EFTA00960063 p. 1. Read at the image at 400 dpi. EFTA01975025 p. 1 is the forward itself, produced separately and UNVERIFIED at the image: To: roger schank, the sender field rendered by the extraction as Fran: Jeffrey Epstein, Sent Tue 5/7/2013 1:31:30 PM. It carries Epstein’s 8:44 message and Klein’s reply under the same “Klein, Joel … to me” label, and it does not carry Schank’s answer — which is why the two quotations from that answer resolve against the sheet below and not against this copy. Two independently produced copies therefore show the same direction: Epstein to Schank, forwarding Klein. The sheet is a four-message chain and it reads bottom-up. Produced header: From: roger schank <▮>, To: Jeffrey Epstein <[email protected]>, Subject: Re:, Date: Tue, 07 May 2013 13:33:38 +0000zoned. Reading upward from the foot: Epstein to Joel Klein at 8:44 AM, asking about core curriculum; Klein’s reply, printed under the label “Klein, Joel 9:04 AM (26 minutes ago) / to me”, ending “Enjoy your Island!” over “Sent from my iPad”; Epstein’s forward of that reply to Schank at 9:31 AM; and at the top of the sheet Schank’s own answer, beginning “wrong; complex texts are beyond most kids” and closing “books are dead except for intellectuals” over his signature block. The sign-off is Klein’s. Schank is the last writer on the sheet, and the only words on it that are his are the three lines at its head, none of which mentions an island. The name “Joel Klein” is printed unbarred in the label on the quoted reply; this page takes nothing else from him and makes no claim about him beyond what this sheet shows.

  35. EFTA00741658 p. 1. Read at the image at 400 dpi. From: Jeffrey Epstein <[email protected]>, To: roger schank <▮>, Subject: Re: ??, Date: Thu, 05 Nov 2009 14:33:07 +0000zoned. Epstein’s five words stand alone above the quoted thread. The thread below runs, on quoted and unzoned clocks: Schank at 7:42 AM (a signature block only in this copy), Epstein at 7:46 AM (“no travel allowed , at least for now sorry”, with the sender’s own spacing), Schank at 9:27 AM. Schank’s address is barred at each of the three places it stands on the sheet — the To: line of the produced header and the two quoted headers below it. Epstein’s own address is unbarred in the From: line and again in the footer. A second copy is not cited. The sheet gives no reason for “no travel allowed” and this page supplies none.

  36. Damaged-form enumeration, run 2026-09-16 with a Damerau–Levenshtein ≤ 2 metric rather than a substitution table, so that insertions, deletions and transpositions are covered as well as replacements. The index was enumerated with CREATE VIRTUAL TABLE temp.v USING fts5vocab('main','pages_fts','row') on a mode=ro connection — nothing was written to the corpus and select count(*) from main.sqlite_master returned 54 before and after — over 107 two-character prefix ranges built by one edit to the head of schank, with a length window of 4 to 9 characters (target −2 to +3), the window printed here because a negative is only as wide as the search that produced it. The scan completed in 525 seconds and returned 403 terms within DL ≤ 2. Twenty-three were tested against the base and are him, with their outside-base contribution: shcank 15 documents / 15 outside; schan 47 / 13; schanki 8 / 4; chank 25 / 2; schankl 5 / 2; schanil 3 / 2; schanl 7 / 1; schanlc 3 / 1; schanks 2 / 1; schankt 2 / 1; schanli 1 / 1; scltank 1 / 1; schanf 1 / 1; schanh 1 / 1; schanic 3 / 1; aschank 1 / 1; schane 1 / 1; schanck 1 / 1; sthank 2 / 1; schankal, schankla, schankm, schanll, sischank, rschanl, sehank 1 each / 0 outside. Reported as zeros, because a zero is a claim about the form and not about the subject: "Roger Sc hank" 0; "Sc hank" 0; schank1 0; "Dr. Schank" 0. Rejected after reading: schenk 33 / 15 outside — a mixed token that carries at least five other people (an AutoFi officer, a serving officer, two legal academics, and a column of names in a commercial background report) as well as six documents that are him, including two office messages and a LinkedIn capture reading “Roger Schenk / Founder at XTOL Corp.”; schant 2 / 2, a courier sender field; schanch 1 / 1, a bank board list; shank 116 / 114, overwhelmingly “thank”; schen, chenk, shenk, scnant, sehabk, sliank, schnnl — none him. The largest single gain is a human transposition, not an optical fault: shcank is h and c swapped, 15 documents, every one outside the base, and fourteen of the fifteen are copies of Epstein’s own 2018 sentence recommending him. A substitution table cannot generate a transposition, and no edit-distance pass generates a word break; the split forms were probed explicitly and returned nothing.

  37. Spider arms, every one harvested by reading a document he appears on rather than generated from the name. "Socratic Arts" 145 documents / 11 outside the surname base — the company he ran; the eleven are courier manifests addressed to a member of his staff at Epstein’s office, two Socratic Arts course notifications sent to Epstein’s own address, and five LinkedIn captures naming a Socratic Arts officer. "Engines for Education" 9 / 4 — the non-profit that took the 2002 grants; the four are the two foundation returns, a prospectus for an online high school, and one of the two HOUSE_OVERSIGHT copies of his book. socraticarts 41 / 1. rogerschank 404 / 2 — the run-together token from the web address in his own signature block. xtol 40 / 2 and "XTOL Corp" 18 / 0 — a later company of his. "John Evans Professor" 264 / 1 — his signature block’s title line. "Institute for the Learning Sciences" 10 / 2. "Teaching Minds" 124 / 103 outside — his book title, but the outside documents are not about him and were not counted. "Patti Perrelli" 9 / 0; "Tammy Berman" 21 / 1; learningbydoingtools 1 / 0; gbstool 1 / 0; "Risk-Eraser" 7 / 1. Reported as a negative, by name, with its count: no arm returned a document of his that the name forms and the damaged-form enumeration had not already reached, except the Socratic Arts and Engines for Education arms, which together contributed thirteen of the sixty-four documents outside the surname base. A person’s e-mail handle was not searched as a published form and is not reproduced here. The institutional-key search that mechanism 10 prescribes found no opaque institutional code for him: he was self-employed through his own companies for the whole period, and the nearest equivalent — his company’s name — is the arm above.
