Named on the documents as”Joscha Bach” in the sender and addressee fields of his own e-mail; “Bach, Joscha” in one 2018 message header and in a bibliography; “BACH/JOSCHA” on airline itineraries; and “Joscha” alone across the office’s day sheets and scheduling traffic. Epstein’s own typing and the scanning together produce many further spellings123
What a document in the release calls him”A young German AGI researcher with a psychology background”, in the list Ben Goertzel sent Epstein on 17 January 20134; and, in a bank’s September 2019 presentation to federal prosecutors, “an artificial intelligence expert who previously worked for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab”5
Earliest dated document read here17 January 2013, a list of researchers sent to Epstein by someone else, on which his name is the first entry; his first recorded message from Epstein is three days later46
Latest exchange between them read here9 June 2019, a Skype exchange with Epstein’s account arranging a call7
What the documents record Epstein doing for himInstructing payments to him and on his behalf: wire authorisations naming him as beneficiary, school fees a bank later recorded as paid, air tickets booked on Epstein’s travel account, and an accounting bill89101151213
What he has said publiclyThat from 2013 to 2017 part of his work at two universities was funded by Epstein, that he met Epstein through scientists he respected, and that he was assured Epstein had reformed14

Joscha Bach is a German cognitive scientist and artificial-intelligence researcher. He corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein from January 2013 to June 2019, writing to him and receiving messages from him about cognition, machine intelligence and consciousness, and, in the same mailbox, about salary, accommodation, flights, school fees, immigration lawyers and tax.

This page keeps two kinds of material apart, and says which is which in every paragraph. One kind is what Bach has published under his own name, which is a legitimate source for who he is and what he does. The other is private correspondence held in Epstein’s files and produced in litigation, which is a record of acts: a message sent, a message received, an instruction given, a fee paid. Nothing on this page is a finding of wrongdoing by him. A third category needs naming too: a substantial share of the documents that carry his name are other people writing about him. What a third party said about him is a fact about that person, and this page marks it as such.

The public record, in his own words

Bach’s account of the relationship is public and recent. In a post titled “On the Jeffrey Epstein Affair”, published 28 November 2025, he wrote that “during the years of 2013 to 2017, a part of my work at the MIT Media Lab and the Harvard Program for Evolutionary Dynamics was funded by Jeffrey Epstein”, that “I met him through several well-known scientists from the fields of AI and psychology, whom I deeply respect and admire for their contributions to the field”, naming Ben Goertzel, Stephen Kosslyn and Roger Schank, and that “many people whose judgement I trusted assured me that he had reformed himself and was committed to staying on the good side of the law”. He also wrote: “I have not met a single person from his network of academics who was aware of any instance of him breaking the law after his conviction”14.

The released documents corroborate the route he describes. They do not speak to what he was told about Epstein, and this page makes no claim on that question.

Four days in January 2013

The file opens with a list. On 17 January 2013 Ben Goertzel sent Epstein a message headed “Re: List of some interesting people ;-)” whose body, under a row of asterisks, is headed “CLEANED-UP LIST OF INTERESTING PEOPLE…”. The first name on it is Bach’s:

Dr. Joscha Bach … A young German AGI researcher with a psychology background. His AGI system is called MicroPsi, and it’s the inspiration for OpenCog’s emotion/motivation system. He had a couple academic post-docs but is now working in industry developing a new version of MicroPsi and applying it to practical problems… Very deep thinker, though he’s kind of an AGI pessimist (he thinks it’s 30-50 years off)

The four dots after “problems” are printed on the sheet; the text extraction of the same page drops them4.

Three days later, on 20 January, Epstein wrote to Bach directly. The whole message is “this weekend for a chat?”6 Bach proposed a time; Epstein answered with his Skype handle15. That evening Epstein wrote to Barnaby Marsh: “you aroind this week, ? joscha bach, artificial intelligence and motivation, i really like him”16.

The next morning, 21 January, after a long message from Bach on machine deception and the false-belief task, Epstein replied in full:

lets start. is there a 501 in the us. that i can give you 25k to start. ben uses humanity plus?

That message was read at the image17. Four days separate the list from the offer.

The salary, and who was to make up the difference

By October 2013 Bach was taking a position at the MIT Media Lab. The arrangement is set out inside a single thread. Joi Ito had written to him:

I talked to Kevin and then Jeffrey about your fee/salary. … Unfortunately, I don’t have much flexibility at MIT regarding your fee/cost at MIT. $60K is a pretty standard price for the post-doc sort of position that you’ll be taking. Jeffrey said that he’ll figure out a way to cover the difference outside of the MIT relationship. Can you talk to him directly about that?

Bach then wrote to Epstein on 30 October 2013, under the subject line “your salary”. After the salutation the message reads:

this is a difficult issue for me to ask. I have asked Martin about the cost of living in Boston; he suggested that about 100K would be necessary to keep the family fed. Is that somehow possible, please? (Our normal burn rate in Berlin is about 5000 Euro/month, which is about $82K/year, and I gather that Boston is quite a bit more expensive.)

Epstein’s reply, printed on the same sheet, is two words: “no problem”. Bach answered at 01:32 the following morning: “Thank you so much!”18 “Martin” is Martin Nowak, whose Harvard programme Bach also joined.

Four days before that exchange, on 27 October 2013, Epstein had sent Bach a single line with no subject: “make sure you apply for green card lottery tomoorw”19

Money: the instruments, and what a bank later told prosecutors

The released financial paper falls into two kinds, and they carry different weight.

The first kind is instructions. Deutsche Bank “Authorization for Asset Movement” forms drawn on the account of “J. Epstein Virgin Islands Foundation Inc.” name Bach as ultimate beneficiary. One directs a wire of ”$ 35,000.00” to a German bank, with the line “Additional Instiuctions: Travel & Moving Expenses”; the spelling is printed on the produced sheet and is not repaired here8. Another directs ”$ 115,000.00” to the MIT Federal Credit Union through EasCorp Federal Credit Union in Burlington, Massachusetts, with the beneficiary printed as “JoSCha Bach”9. These are authorisations. This page does not assert that any individual authorisation was executed, because the forms do not say so.

The second kind is settled movement. A wires, checks and ACH report dated 12/27/2016, produced under a Deutsche Bank Bates stamp, carries a row against MIT Federal Credit Union with the reference “REF: CONSULTING FEE”, the beneficiary “JOSCHA BACH”, and a net amount of 20000.0010. That row was read at the image, which matters: the text extraction of the same sheet runs two adjacent rows together and produces a phrase, “DONATION JOSCHA BACH … 10000.00”, that the paper does not contain. The word “DONATION” and the figure 10000.00 belong to a different beneficiary on the line beneath.

The strongest evidence that money actually moved is a bank’s own account of it. On 12 September 2019, a month after Epstein’s death, Deutsche Bank made a presentation to the Office of the United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York. Its Exhibit R, headed “TUITION PAYMENTS ON BEHALF OF CHILDREN / WOMEN”, has a row for a Cambridge day care whose background note reads, after a redaction, “Bach is an artificial intelligence expert who previously worked for the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Media Lab. Epstein has made numerous other payments to or on behalf of Bach.” The row records a payment of $12,480 on 7/10/2015 from an Epstein account5. A second row, for the German International School Boston, notes that the redacted beneficiaries “appear to be the children of Joscha Bach” and lists three payments: $4,713 on 6/25/2015, $16,850 on 4/14/2016 and $14,280 on 7/13/201720.

That middle figure closes a loop that is otherwise only an instruction. On 12 April 2016 Bach had written to Epstein under the subject “Tuition for schoolchildren”: “The tuition for ▮ and ▮ for this year will be 16,850.00. It needs to be paid to the German International School, 57 Holton Street Boston, MA 02134”. The producer has blacked out the two names, and this page does not supply them. Epstein forwarded the message to Richard Kahn the same morning with the invoice attached; Kahn asked “Shall I pay from JEE =ersonal? Please advise”; on 14 April Bach wrote back to Epstein “Thank you!!!”112122. The bank’s table puts a payment of exactly that amount on exactly that date.

The pattern repeats at the end. On 1 February 2019 Bach asked Epstein for help with a tuition deposit at a school in Palo Alto. On 4 February Kahn wrote to Epstein, over three short lines, “please advise if ok to pay”, “if so =rom jee?” and “thank you”. Epstein’s entire reply, sent that evening at 6:18 PM, is one word: “foundation”23. Bach thanked him the next day24.

Other money in the file runs through third parties. On 3 July 2014, forwarding an accounting of workshop costs that Bach had sent to Kahn the night before, Epstein instructed: “send martin novak 50k for joscha use . from enhanced”25. “Enhanced” is Enhanced Education, one of Epstein’s foundations. In November 2018 Kahn sent Epstein a message headed “Joscha accounting bill”13.

Lawyers, a visa, and a question about Darren

On 27 May 2015 Bach wrote to Epstein a message whose entire body is: “Dear Jeffrey, thank you for the lawyer support! This takes a big weight =ff me!” The broken word is printed on the copy read at the image; another copy in the release prints it undamaged26.

Two years later the legal help had a specific subject. On 29 March 2017 Bach forwarded Epstein an estimate from an attorney at Mintz, Levin, Cohn, Ferris, Glovsky and Popeo: “I’ve discussed with Susan and our estimate for the green card =rocessing is $6500 - $8000 in legal fees for the extraordinary ability =reen care petition”. The equals signs are printed on the sheet27. In the covering message Bach put a question to Epstein directly: “Is it better to handle the green card via the lawyers, or would it be =ossible/better to do that via Darren?”28 The sheet gives only the forename, and this page does not identify the person it names. A separate strand of the same period, documented on this site’s page for Ben Goertzel, concerned an O-1 petition with Humanity+ as sponsoring employer.

Where the file places him

The office booked him more than once, and the itineraries read in full for this page show air tickets issued through Epstein’s travel account, rooms, cars and standing entries in the day sheets12. A booking is not an attendance, and most of these records show only that an appointment existed. Two categories are different.

The first is his own after-the-fact writing. On 26 December 2014 Lesley Groff asked Epstein: “Joscha Bach is asking me to purchase a ticket to your island from Puerto Rico on jan 5 or 6 and then on to Berlin”29. On 7 January, from Berlin, Bach wrote to Epstein under the subject “Landed.”:

thank you =or the chance to visit you in your lovely Caribbean home. I arrived =ack in the Berlin winter. It was also very good to =alk to Barnaby; I find him to be incredibly insightful. … =erhaps you should have one on Little Saint James! :)

The equals signs are printed on the sheet. That message, in his own hand and after the event, records that he was at Little Saint James30.

The second is access rather than attendance. On 3 June 2015, confirming a lunch with Epstein at Nowak’s institute, Groff offered to have someone come down and let him in. Bach replied: “No need, I work there and have a key. :)”31

Otherwise the day sheets simply place his name in Epstein’s diary over six years, mostly in Cambridge and New York32. One entry is worth printing because a different page on this site turns on it. Groff’s schedule for Friday 29 April 2016, sent to Epstein and marked Importance: High, reads “3:00pm Appt w/Joscha Bach and Reid Hoffman at the Media Lab”33. Two days earlier the office had written to Bach that Epstein “says he may come meet with you and Reid”, and told Epstein’s staff he “may go over to the Media Lab around 3pm … but not sure…I think he will play that by ear”34. The diary records the appointment. The messages around it do not establish that Epstein attended it, and this page does not say that he did.

The office was still arranging his life in 2019. A day sheet for 21 February 2019 carries the reminder “Joscha Bach and family to move to San Francisco”35. Epstein’s files also hold a Massachusetts certificate of title issued 15 May 2015 in his name for a used car bought the previous month, and a Cambridge garage invoice of the same week36.

What other people said about him

Nine of the sixty first sheets classified for this page are other people’s prose about him. Those documents are evidence about their authors.

On the two occasions read here where Epstein described him to a third party, he did it in terms of what he had brought in. To Larry Summers on 10 December 2014: “anytime , try early jan. . ito great. joscha bach my AI guy i brought to martin from berlin. smart but unpolished”37 To Misha Gromov on 1 December 2016, listing the day’s visitors by subject: “joscha bach, machine learning.”38

Joi Ito, on 22 October 2013: “BTW, getting going with Joscha. He’s smart.”39 Groff, on 27 October 2014: “Joscha Bach says the symposium sounds wonderful and would love to go.”40 Groff again, on 21 July 2016, arranging lunch: “I know Joscha Bach is a vegetarian”41

None of these is evidence about Bach’s own conduct. They record how Epstein and his staff spoke about a man they were paying.

The correspondence itself

Thirteen of the sixty first sheets classified for this page are his own writing to Epstein, and most of that is about minds. He wrote on 26 November 2014: “I currently spend a lot of time thinking about how to model and =onceptualize love, and I am starting to have a bunch of ideas.”42 On 5 June 2015, after an afternoon with Epstein and Nowak, he wrote about “the ‘mobjects’ that =ou have been talking about”43. On 6 March 2017, answering Epstein on octopus cognition: “Virus =ntelligence is an emergent thing, over many viruses. The individual =irus either succeeds or fails. A virus is like a thought, not like a =ind.”44 The = characters are quoted-printable damage printed on the produced sheets.

He also wrote about Noam Chomsky, whom Epstein was courting in the same years, and about Roger Schank, one of the men he credits with the introduction4546.

On 12 December 2018 he sent Epstein a long assessment of a meeting he had attended, including the line “Her taste in funding scientists is a bit less discerning than yours”, and closed: “As always, thank you so much for all your support.”47 Epstein’s reply that morning was “read the paper. , lets skype today”47 Two weeks earlier the office had introduced him by e-mail to a man named Neil Serebryany, at Epstein’s request; the next day Groff reported to Epstein, “Joscha and Neil are ‘talking’ via email!“4849

2019

Four Skype transcripts between Bach and Epstein’s account were located for this page, covering January, April and June 2019.

On 12 April 2019 the subject is tax. Epstein wrote at 10:52 am: “I will need to check on which entity was the transferor . You MUST be perfect with taxes. I will help. I just have no information for the moment. I suggest you file an extension. I wish you would have told me earlier” Bach replied at 11:32 am: “Is it better to pay the estimated taxes on time with the tax day, or does all of this have to wait until October?” Later that afternoon he added: “I would have needed to be more situationally aware and proactive (I told Rich about the problem last autumn, while he still had way more important and urgent things on his hands).” The string ' in the transcript’s rendering of his contractions is printed on the sheet5051.

The last dated exchange in the material read for this page is on 8 and 9 June 2019. It is entirely about finding a time to speak. Bach: “just left the house for a school event, I can in 2h”; Epstein: “tomorw better”; Bach: “Do you already know what time is good?”; Epstein: “anytime after 7 am?” The transcript then logs an outgoing call of fifty-five minutes and fifty-two seconds7.

Epstein’s office had already bought his July travel, and the July 2019 day sheets carry reminders of flights in his name52. Epstein was arrested on 6 July 2019. No document read for this page records any contact between them after 9 June 2019.

What the documents do not show

  • They do not show what he knew. Searches across the documents bearing his name for “conviction”, “sex offender”, “registered offender”, “plea agreement”, “indictment”, “grand jury”, “allegation” and “subpoena” returned nothing on any of those terms that concerns him: the hits for “conviction” are about rhetorical conviction and about a guitarist, the single “sex offender” hit is a footnote citation in a bank’s memorandum, and the “deposition” hits are unrelated lines on day sheets that happen also to name him. No document read for this page records Bach discussing Epstein’s offences, his conviction or his registration. His public statement addresses this; the corpus does not.
  • They do not show a contract. No agreement, engagement letter, consultancy contract or grant instrument between Bach and Epstein or any Epstein entity was located.
  • They do not close the wire authorisations. The Deutsche Bank authorisation forms are instructions. Except where a bank’s own settled report or its 2019 presentation records a payment, this page does not say a particular sum reached him.
  • They do not show what MIT or Harvard were told. The internal university record of how his funding was approved is not in this release. A published university report exists and is not a document of this corpus.
  • They do not show him on a flight manifest. No aircraft log or passenger manifest naming him was located; his air travel appears as commercial itineraries booked on Epstein’s account.

How this page was compiled, and what it judges

Sixty documents carrying his name were drawn at random from the population and each one’s own first sheet was read and classified by hand. This is a judgement, not a measurement, and the buckets are printed so a reader can disagree:

bucketof 60
he is in the sender field13
he is in the To or Cc field26
third-party prose about him9
roster, diary, calendar or attendee list10
financial instrument or ticketing record2

By that reading he carries a header role, as sender or addressee, in 39 of the 60. The two ambiguous edges are worth naming: documents whose outer header is staff-to-Epstein but which carry a message of his beneath were counted as third-party prose, and a ticketing thread naming him as the traveller was counted as a record rather than as prose.

Twenty sheets were opened as images. Every quotation on this page that carries an image footnote was checked against the rendered page, and one text-layer artefact was caught that way and is described above in the section on money.

What this page withholds

Contact details for living non-survivors are publishable at this desk, but some are withheld here by editorial choice. This page does not print his e-mail address, his telephone number, his home address, his date of birth, his passport details, a vehicle identification number or a registration plate, or any bank account, routing or IBAN value.

This page carries nothing about his children beyond what is necessary to describe a payment, and nothing at all about any family member’s health. A member of his family appears in the correspondence under her own name; she is not named here. Where the producer has blacked out a name inside a passage quoted above, the gap is marked and is not filled from any other copy.

Some of his own private writing about his own cognition, and one third party’s characterisation of it, were read and are not reproduced; that is an editorial choice, not a producer’s.

Footnotes

  1. The release renders his forename in many broken forms, among them “joshca”, “joshcha”, “josha”, “joseha”, “loscha”, “joscba”, “jocha”, “joacha”, “jaosha”, “josccha”, “jopscha” and “J0SCHA”, and his surname as “Bac”, “Bachl”, “bath”, “Hach” and “BpCh”. Some are scanning damage and some are Epstein’s own typing: the form “joshca” occurs inside messages Epstein composed, as at EFTA01927648 p.1, and “joshca bach” appears in his hand at EFTA00648555 p.1.
