Andrew Albert Christian Edward Mountbatten-Windsor (born 19 February 1960), known for most of his public life as Prince Andrew, Duke of York, is the second son of Queen Elizabeth II.1 He stood down in July 2011 as the United Kingdom’s Special Representative for International Trade and Investment; ABC News reported that he had held the role for ten years and was leaving it amid coverage of his friendship with Jeffrey Epstein.3 Between July 2010 and March 2011 Andrew and Epstein exchanged emails directly: Epstein acted as an intermediary in a private financial claim against Andrew’s former wife, and Andrew forwarded Epstein his press office’s private dealings with a newspaper.689 In August 2021 Virginia Giuffre sued Andrew in the Southern District of New York, alleging that Epstein had trafficked her to him when she was 17; the parties settled in February 2022 and the case was dismissed with prejudice in March 2022.4105 Andrew denied the allegations through his press secretary in February 2011, and Buckingham Palace said in October 2025 that “he continues to deny the allegations against him.”911

The contact book

The Mail on Sunday reported on 13 March 2011 that a print-out of Epstein’s contact book had come to light after being subpoenaed for use in a civil case against him, and that “The list included 16 numbers for Prince Andrew under his title The Duke of York.”12 The same passage recorded that “His ex-wife, Sarah Ferguson, was entered under the Duchess of York and there were 18 numbers for her and her associates as well as an email address.”12 Epstein’s crisis-communications adviser Mike Sitrick forwarded the article to him the next day with a proposal to seek a correction from the paper on an unrelated point.13

Earlier press

A New York Post gossip column of 1 December 2000, preserved in a JPMorgan due-diligence compilation, reported that Ghislaine Maxwell had “had so much adverse press over her relationship with Prince Andrew, Fergie’s ex,” and that the relationship “is said to be platonic.”14

Little St. James

The Mail on Sunday’s 13 March 2011 article, based on interviews with the couple who managed Epstein’s island Little St. James from 1999 to 2007, describes Andrew as the first guest to visit during their tenure and reports at least one further visit, with Maxwell and Epstein.15 The article states that Epstein was “a close friend of Prince Andrew (who visited the island at least three times).”15 It also records that during the couple’s initial visit they were woken at night and told to leave the island “because a VIP was making an unexpected visit,” and “were later told by staff that the guest had been Prince Andrew.”16

2010

On 24 July 2010 Epstein emailed Andrew, copying “ferg,” to say “I will be in paris starting tomorrow”; Andrew replied the same day: “Congratulations! DS told me you were allowed out from yesterday.”6

On 11 August 2010 Epstein wrote to Andrew proposing that he have dinner with a friend of Epstein’s, whose name is redacted in the released document; Andrew replied the following morning that he “would be delighted” and asked Epstein to “give her my contact details to get in touch.”17

On 30 August 2010 an email forwarded to Epstein quoted an invitation to “come down to Royal Lodge on sept 1st .. Wednesday.. To a big meeting of the way ahead of ME! Prince Andrew is calling it for 10.30am and then lunch afterwards.”18

December 2010, New York

On 6 December 2010 Epstein forwarded to the publicist Peggy Siegal a New York Post Page Six item reporting that Andrew “regaled a bevy of media heavyweights at billionaire Jeffrey Epstein’s Upper East Side townhouse the other night.”19 Epstein’s covering line was: “Not good for andrew, not good for me -not good for you.”19 The item asserted that Epstein “has stayed at Sandringham and vacationed with the prince in Thailand, while Andrew has visited his Manhattan home many times”; Epstein wrote to Andrew on 28 February 2011, “Ive never been on a boat in thailand.”197 In February 2011 Lloyd Grove of The Daily Beast put it to Siegal that she had been “helping him re-enter NY society, as with the dinner you helped organize for Prince Andrew.”20

On 7 December 2010 Andrew emailed Epstein: “Thanks again for a great week with my family!”21

On 14 December 2010 a JPMorgan banker asked Epstein’s assistant Lesley Groff for the Duke of York’s email address, because “Jes is going to be in London next week and would like to schedule some time with him if he’s around”; Groff referred the request to Epstein.22 See Jes Staley and JPMorgan Chase.

A private claim, 2010–2011

Between December 2010 and March 2011 Epstein acted as an intermediary in the settlement of a private financial claim against Sarah, Duchess of York, corresponding directly with Andrew and with Andrew’s private office.8 Andrew thanked Epstein for arranging it, writing “Thank you so, so much for sorting this last thing out for me”, and on 28 February 2011 asked him: “Can you send me the details of where I should send the money and to whom and I’ll get it done.”237

February–March 2011

On 26 February 2011 the Mail on Sunday put allegations concerning Andrew to Buckingham Palace, relying in part on a photograph.9 Andrew forwarded Epstein the letter his press secretary, Ed Perkins, had sent the paper, which stated that “The Duke of York categorically denies all of the allegations made about him.”9 Andrew’s covering line was: “This is what we’ve sent to the MoS. We will see the photograph when they send it.”9 Later the same day Andrew forwarded Epstein his continuing exchange with his press secretary.24

On 27 February Epstein wrote to Andrew, “sorry,, —on a more postive note. jes staley will be in london on next tues afternoon, if you have time,”; Andrew replied the next morning, “Good morning from a very dull London,” said he had not read the Mail articles, and asked, “Jes is coming on 1st March or next week?”7 Later that morning he told Epstein his office was “somewhat at a loss as to how to deal with this as it is now innuendo rather than substantive allegations, notwithstanding anything false they have said about you or Ghislaine,” was in “discreet discussions with the Press Complaints Commission,” and would write again to the Mail Group’s lawyers over what he called its “accuracy and innuendo failures.”7 When Epstein wrote, “THe press is piling on me in the states.. nothing to do. just want to make sure you’re ok,” Andrew answered: “I’m just as concerned for you! Don’t worry about me! It would seem we are in this together and will have to rise above it!”7

On 4 March 2011 Andrew forwarded Epstein a draft response prepared by his private office for the Epstein side to use, setting out two aims: to state that the account was a fabrication, and “to distance me from any of this if you can.”25 On 7 March 2011 the Daily Mail reported that Andrew had promised to sever his links with Epstein, quoting a source that “The duke recognises now that the meeting in December 2010, after Epstein’s conviction, was unwise.”26 On 21 July 2011 Epstein circulated the Daily Mail’s report that Andrew was standing down as the United Kingdom’s trade envoy.27

After 2011

On 16 April 2013 Sultan Bin Sulayem of DP World wrote to Epstein under the subject “Prince Andrew lunch in London”: “Prince Andrew invited me for lunch on 1 st of May at a function he is holding for the president if UAE who’s is on an official visit to UK.” Epstein replied, “Greatv.”28 On 28 June 2013 Steven Sinofsky forwarded Epstein a note from Andrew’s private secretary thanking Sinofsky for a meeting, saying the Duke “found the discussion incredibly stimulating” and that there was “lots to think about in terms of HRH’s aspirations.”29

On 22 March 2014 Epstein’s search-optimisation staff wrote to him about pushing down unfavourable coverage; the chain carries a forwarded Google Alert of 20 March 2014 whose headline read “Bill Clinton links to Prince Andrew’s billionaire friend Jeffrey Epstein.”30 The document is the internal reputation-management exchange, not the article it refers to.30

Allegations recorded in official files

A Federal Bureau of Investigation briefing deck on the Epstein investigations includes a page headed “PROMINENT NAMES,” listing allegations against public figures drawn from victim statements and complaints.31 Prince Andrew appears on that page with three entries; the complainants’ names are redacted in the released document.31

Giuffre v. Prince Andrew

Virginia L. Giuffre filed suit against “Prince Andrew, Duke of York, a/k/a Andrew Albert Christian Edward, in his personal capacity” in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York on 9 August 2021, before Judge Lewis A. Kaplan.4 The complaint pleaded two counts under New York common law, battery and intentional infliction of emotional distress, and alleged that “Prince Andrew committed sexual assault and battery upon Plaintiff when she was” 17 years old.4 On 11 January 2022 Judge Kaplan ruled that Andrew’s “motion to dismiss the complaint or for a more definite statement is denied in all respects,” adding that nothing in the opinion “properly may be construed as indicating a view with respect to the truth of the charges or countercharges.”32

NPR reported that on 13 January 2022 Buckingham Palace announced that the Duke of York’s military affiliations and royal patronages had been returned to the Queen, with her “approval and agreement,” that he would no longer be addressed as “His Royal Highness” in an official capacity, and that he was “defending this case as a private citizen.”33

On 15 February 2022 the parties filed a joint letter advising the court that they had “reached a settlement in principle.”10 The one-page statement attached to it records an out-of-court settlement whose sum “is not being disclosed,” an intention by Andrew to make “a substantial donation to Ms. Giuffre’s charity in support of victims’ rights,” and his acceptance that Giuffre “has suffered both as an established victim of abuse and as a result of unfair public attacks”; it states that he “regrets his association with Epstein” and contains no admission of liability.10 On 8 March 2022 the parties stipulated to dismissal “pursuant to Federal Rule of Civil Procedure 41(a)(1)(A)(ii), and the parties’ settlement agreement dated February 12, 2022,” and Judge Kaplan ordered the action dismissed with prejudice, each party bearing its own costs.5 The Daily Telegraph reported in February 2022 that Andrew was to pay £10 million to Giuffre and £2 million to a charity for victims of sex trafficking; those figures come from the newspaper, not from the court record.34

Titles and public roles

Andrew gave the BBC’s Newsnight an interview about his relationship with Epstein, recorded at Buckingham Palace on 14 November 2019 and broadcast on 16 November 2019; PBS NewsHour reported that he stepped back from public duties four days later.3536 In February 2020 The Daily Beast reported that Geoffrey Berman, then United States Attorney for the Southern District of New York, had said Andrew refused to cooperate with the investigation, that Andrew said no request had been received and he was ready to talk, and that Berman’s office “stood by” his remarks.37

Al Jazeera reported that on 30 October 2025 Buckingham Palace announced that the King had “initiated a formal process to remove the Style, Titles and Honours of Prince Andrew” and that he would leave Royal Lodge, and that the palace said these steps were necessary although “he continues to deny the allegations against him.”11 The London Gazette of 5 November 2025 published the Crown Office notice: “THE KING has been pleased by Letters Patent under the Great Seal of the Realm dated 3 November 2025 to declare that Andrew Mountbatten Windsor shall no longer be entitled to hold and enjoy the style, title or attribute of ‘Royal Highness’ and the titular dignity of ‘Prince’.”2

Named in the House record

On August 31, 2026 Representative Thomas Massie of Kentucky was recognised for one minute in the House of Representatives, under the heading “Bring Epstein Perpetrators to Justice.” He said that a year after the Epstein Files Transparency Act was signed “the government continues to withhold over 3 million files,” and that a second bill, the Epstein Files Transparency Act II, had been introduced. He then said: “We want perpetrators of these crimes to be investigated and prosecuted, men like:” and read a list of thirteen men and one woman; of Andrew he said, “Prince Andrew, who committed sex crimes in the United States, too.” He closed: “Perhaps hearing these names will shame the Department of Justice into delivering justice.”38 The other thirteen names are not reproduced here. That Andrew “committed sex crimes” is Massie’s own assertion, made under privilege on the floor of the House; it is not a charge, a referral, an indictment or a finding, and being named in it is not evidence of anything. Buckingham Palace said in October 2025, as recorded above, that Andrew “continues to deny the allegations against him”; no response from him specifically addressed to Massie’s remarks appears in the sources cited on this page.
