what this page is about, and what it is not
The Deutsche Bank markets officer who ran the day to day trading side of the Epstein relationship after it moved from JPMorgan in 2013, and who wrote the agenda for the bank’s October 2013 meeting with the client. No allegation against her was found anywhere in the release read for this page, and none is made here. She is a banking professional and this page treats her as one. This page complements The Haze Trust, which records the trust instrument and the bank’s onboarding of it; it does not repeat that page and should be read beside it.
| Who | Tazia Smith. Director, Key Client Partners - US, Deutsche Bank Securities Inc., Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management, 345 Park Avenue, New York, per her own signature block1 |
| An earlier title on the same block | Director, Markets Coverage Group, on her sheets of August and November 2013; Key Client Partners - US replaces it by September 2013 and runs to the end of the record1 |
| In the release | She writes in the release herself, and is not merely a name on other people’s lists. On a hand sample of forty documents carrying her name she is the sender in twenty one of them2 |
| Her own dated messages | 20 August 2013 to 7 December 2017, concentrated in 20142 |
| The act, 9 Sept 2013 | ”we’re on it Paul. You, Caroline and I need to review an accurate list of the positions that can/cannot/wouldn’t come.” She is one of three named people reviewing what can move, and in the same message she sets the order of the next steps3 |
| What the bank said she was | ”Paul Morris is the banker (from JPM) and Tazia is managing the relationship/ trading given her Capital markets KCP focus.”4 |
| The document she wrote | ”Epstein Meeting 10/22/13 Agenda”, revised twice in one evening, printed on bank letterhead in six copies the next morning5 |
| Where the trust touches her | She is added to the Southern Financial valuation statement distribution in December 2013, and in October 2014 books a completed share order “to the Haze account”67 |
Identification, and a title that moves
Her signature block is the only self description in the record. On her earliest sheets it reads
Director / Markets Coverage Group / Deutsche Bank Securities, Inc. / Deutsche Asset & Wealth
Management / 345 Park Avenue - 26th Floor / New York, NY 10154. From September 2013 the same
block reads Director | Key Client Partners - US, sometimes over DB Securities Inc rather than
Deutsche Bank Securities Inc, and by 2017 over Deutsche Bank Wealth Management rather than
Deutsche Asset & Wealth Management.1 The address is a bank office, not a residence.
Two colleagues describe her in the third person in August and September 2013, and both call her a Director. Amanda Kirby, arranging a first meeting, wrote that “Paul would be bringing Caroline Kitidis who is the Head of the Key Clients Partners Group and Tazia Smith who is a Director in that group.”8 Days later Lesley Groff relayed the same thing to the client, calling her “Tazia Smith (Director of Key Clients Partners Group)”.9 The group’s name is spelled both ways across these sheets and the desk does not resolve which is correct.
August 2013: she asks for the meeting
Her earliest dated message in the release is 20 August 2013 at 8:02:28 pm, the offset carried in the sheet’s own RFC header. It goes to Kirby, copying Paul Morris:
While Vinit is in NY Sep 3-4 and Sep 9-10, we’d like to get him in front of Epstein. Have you reached out to check Epstein’s schedule? Let me know. I’m happy to reach out to coordinate if that simplifies things for you. Just let me know what’s best.
She calls the client “Epstein” here. In everything she later sends him directly she writes “Jeffrey”.10
A week later the meeting was being arranged around her. On 27 August at 9:11 am Morris forwarded the client’s scheduling request to Kirby with one line: “Pls see what works with tazia and caroline, call it southern trust company, let me know, thx”. The sheet prints no terminal mark. What “it” refers to is not stated anywhere on the sheet, and the desk does not supply a reading; the sentence is printed because the instruction to name something “southern trust company” sits inside the arrangement of a client meeting and a reader is entitled to see it.11 Kirby answered at 10:02: “All set. Next Friday, September 6 at 1pm”.11 Groff had asked that everyone come to the client’s Manhattan home; the desk does not reproduce the street address.8
September 2013: the transfer out of JPMorgan
On 9 September 2013 at 5:49:17 pm she wrote to Morris under the subject Re: ACATS for Southern Financial/Trust [I]. It is the clearest single statement of what her job on this relationship
was:
we’re on it Paul. You, Caroline and I need to review an accurate list of the positions that can/cannot/wouldn’t come. Based on our conversation Friday, JE knows not all will be coming over (proceeds from proprietary product and OTC options will move once matured). We just want to be sure that list of positions that cannot move, is accurate. Jay should have that for is in the morning (he has to check with Pershing, ACAT, etc…various groups); some positions will be a discussion for you, Caroline and I (eg. we agreed novating the FX options wasn’t realistic).
Sit down in the morning and then go back to Jeff with this info as part of our note of thanks for Friday’s meeting?
⚠ The typing is hers and is preserved: “that for is in the morning” is what the sheet prints.3 The reference to “Friday’s meeting” is the only evidence read for this page that the 6 September meeting happened at all, and it does not say who was in the room.
Ten days later she put an ISDA discussion in the diary herself, sending a calendar item headed
Southern Financial/Trust ISDA Discussion for 2 pm on 19 September 2013.12
October 2013: the agenda she wrote
On 21 October 2013 at 5:51 pm she sent Morris and Caroline Kitidis a document headed
Epstein Meeting 10/22/13 Agenda, copying Kirby and Vahe Stepanian.
At 6:00 pm Kitidis, who signs as Managing Director | Head of Key Client Partners & Wealth
Investment Coverage - Americas, sent it back with one instruction: “Monica please put together a
professional version of this on DB letter head, 6 copies, by 10am. Thanks.” At 8:57 pm she
circulated a second draft: “…more client friendly version of the same. Monica, please use this
one.”5
The agenda is the structural document of this relationship, and three of its six sections are assigned to her. Its first heading is “Entity Transfer and Position Update - [Paul/Tazia]”, under which it lists “Remaining positions to be transferred”, “Sum total left at JPM” and “Sum total at DB”, and then runs an Investment Objectives Discussion across six named holdings:
i. SFLLC ii. STINC iii. Haze iv. Jeepers v. Foundation vi. Personal
Section III is hers alone and is headed “Coverage - Stylistic Clarifications - [Tazia]”, with sub-items “Frequency/incremental moves”, “Preferred medium” and “When unreachable”. Sections IV and V, “Investment/Trade Ideas” and “Other Investment Opportunities”, are also hers. The closing appendix is a paperwork checklist that repeats the same enumeration as “all 6 entities - SFLLC, STINC, Jeepers, Haze, Personal, Foundation”.5
⚠ The desk does not expand SFLLC, STINC or Foundation from this sheet, because the sheet does not. Southern Financial, LLC, Southern Trust Company, The Haze Trust and Jeepers Inc each have their own page and the reader may compare.
Writing to the client
From late October 2013 she writes to the client directly, to a personal address of his, usually copying Morris and Stepanian and later Richard Kahn, Daniel Sabba and Stewart Oldfield. The register is market commentary and execution, and nothing else. A message of 7 November 2013 at 1:27:59 pm, copied to Harry Beller, is representative:
I’m sure you know that the ECB cut rates to 25bps this morning. EURUSD broke down to a 1.33 handle.
Just wanted to check in on the european equity basket you have away from DB - I’m sure you’ve realized nice gains (names like JCDecaux, for example, which was one of our top picks here too).
While the accomodative ECB should be supportive for the markets nearterm, the ECB doesn’t have the same firepower as the Fed and the risk-reward for european equity indices is not as clearly to the upside. Vol is still relatively low, but I’d favor something like an absolute return note, rather than being delta-one.
Call you shortly on TWTR allocation, as you saw, it priced at 26.
⚠ “accomodative” is the spelling on the sheet.13 Two things are worth marking. She is advising on holdings the client keeps at another firm, “away from DB”; and the last line records that Deutsche Bank was offering him an allocation in a new issue.
12 November 2013: a warning that goes back to JPMorgan
Five days later she sent a warning about a position she says came from the old bank.
You’re long 1mm USD each of BRL step up notes in Southern Trust from JP. The notes have a 15% barrier and BRL is presently down ~17% vs. USD from your initial strike. The notes are marking down more than 20%. Barrier is European. Final valuation date on the notes are 3/20/14 and 4/14/14.
Posting you and would like to get your view given the move and mark-to-market (vs. your -10% rule).
The sheet that carries this message carries what happened next. The client forwarded it the same day to Paul Barrett, whose signature block on the same sheet reads “Managing Director | Global Investment Opportunities Group | J.P. Morgan Securities LLC | J.P. Morgan Private Bank”. Barrett answered at 10:43:56 pm:
The notes have an at expiry barrier. So we sit tight until expiry and hopefully finish in the buffer zone. Do not sell.
⚠⚠ What this sequence documents, and only this, is that three months after the accounts moved the client was putting his new bank’s warning in front of his old bank’s officer and taking the old bank’s answer. Nothing read for this page records what was then done with the notes. ⚠ The clocks on this sheet do not reconcile: the forward is stamped earlier in the afternoon than the message it forwards, which the desk reports rather than repairs.14
23 November 2013: the out of office
She went away and the client noticed. Her automatic reply reached him on Saturday 23 November; he forwarded it to Morris with a body that is, in full, eight question marks. Morris forwarded that to her at 7:37 am with “Did u tell him?” and, on the next line, “Thx”. She answered at 8:31:49 am:
I just clarified. I should have been more specific earlier this week, my mistake. I had prepped Vahe and had intended my travel seamless/not-disruptive for him.
⚠ The text layer of this sheet reads the eight question marks as digits and renders her sentence with a full stop where the sheet prints a comma; both were corrected at the image.15 A month earlier her own agenda had put “When unreachable” on the list of things to settle with the client.5
December 2013: added to the statement distribution
On 19 December 2013 at 8:57:25 am Vahe Stepanian replied to an automated valuation statement for Southern Financial and asked two colleagues to widen its circulation: “please add Tazia Smith, Paul Morris, and Amanda Kirby to this distribution. Thank you.”6
⚠⚠ This is the origin of the largest single class of documents that carry her name, and it matters for reading her footprint: a standing machine distribution list is not correspondence. A reader who counts her appearances will be counting that list unless they exclude it.2
January 2014: how the bank described her
On 10 January 2014 at 20:31 Caroline Kitidis wrote an internal note to a London colleague after a client call. It is the fullest description of her role anywhere in the release:
Dario, by way of background, this was a KCP account (new) that we opened and brought over from JPM, $200mm of new assets, to trade capital markets - onboarded in past 2 months. Paul Morris is the banker (from JPM) and Tazia is managing the relationship/ trading given her Capital markets KCP focus. He’s started to do some trading but he really wants institutional service and ideas. Vinit and Tazia reviewed his holding today at the client meeting, and gave him advice on what to do with the existing portfolio as well as new ideas.
⚠ This is Kitidis reporting, not a record made in the room. The colleague replied the next morning: “Thanks Caroline. Am glad it went well. Kudos to paul for bringing over the account and tazia was all over it, both well prepared and punchy.” ⚠ A reply saying an event went well closes the event and not anyone’s presence, and this desk does not read that sentence as placing its writer, or her, in the room. What the sheet establishes is that a managing director told her superiors that she was managing the relationship and the trading.4 Further passages of the same message concern other clients and are not reproduced here.
2014: the year of the traffic
Most of her record falls in 2014, and it is execution work. Trade reports, indicative levels,
FX option term sheets, oil and emerging market commentary, and a steady stream of Trade Report
subject lines addressed to the client and copied to the team.
The one that reaches the trust is the Citigroup preferred order of 28 and 29 October 2014. On the afternoon of 28 October she reported a partial fill and asked where to put it: “Your other Citi pfd is held in Haze.”16 The next morning at 8:39 she asked “Good Morning Jeffrey - Re-enter order? / Use limit and/or participate % volume?” and was answered, four minutes later, with two words: “vwap ok”.17 At 4:34:36 pm she closed it:
Today you executed the following:
B 150,967 C at $24.2528
This completes your position of 200,000 shares (24.20 avg cost, 6% yield). We have this booked to the Haze account, where your other Citi 6.875% preferred is held. Let us know if you would like to change that.
⚠ Of the documents read for this page it is the only one showing securities being placed into the Haze brokerage account by name, on an instruction taken from the client the same day, and it belongs beside The Haze Trust rather than on it.7
Two further 2014 items are worth recording because both show her name being carried into rooms she is not writing in. On 14 March a colleague told the head of Wealth Management Americas that “Tazia has conveyed that KCP-client Jeff Epstein will indicate for the Paylocity IPO, which is this coming Tuesday night/ Wednesday morning.”18 And on 16 September, in an internal dispute over a different client’s allocation, a managing director wrote that “I turned this over to the designated KCP representatives, Tazia and Vahe, to handle the trade for your benefit.” ⚠ That dispute has nothing to do with Epstein and the other client is not named here.19
8 July 2014: a nomination list with one name fewer
Deutsche Bank was the lead corporate sponsor of the Metropolitan Opera’s opening night gala of 22 September 2014, and the bank asked its desks for client nominations. At 3:43 pm the organiser wrote to Kirby: “Here are the details for the event / Tazia had mentioned, Epstein, Gottesman and Black.” The same circular states the rule: “Once approved by management and compliance, you will be notified. Only at that point may you extend an invitation.”20
⚠⚠ Thirty-one minutes later Kirby submitted the nominations, and the list she submitted names two people, not three. It gives Leon Black and Noam Gottesman, each with Morris as the bank contact. Epstein is not on it.21 ⚠ The desk states the difference and stops there: no document read for this page says why, whether a nomination for him was made elsewhere, whether any nomination was approved, or whether anybody attended. A nomination is not an invitation and an invitation is not an attendance.
2015 and 2017: the tail
Her record thins sharply after 2014. A February 2015 thread under the subject
Reinsurance deal carries a short message from her to Morris and others.22 Then almost
nothing until May 2017, when she appears across a fortnight of messages under the subject
Rothschild, working an equity order for Richard Kahn with an equity trading colleague and with
Stewart Oldfield copied.23 Her last dated message in the release is 7 December 2017 at
9:25:25 am, and it is not about Epstein at all: it pitches a structured note to an unrelated
client.24
June 2018: a title this page does not settle
Six months after her last message, an internal exchange about account coverage prints this sentence:
Just the person in KCP that is responsible to follow up, not ACO. ACOs are only MDs Dan, Xavi, Tazia, but Dan and I discussed and we feel that when it comes to the “PIC” Sales&Trading accounts (not GM Lending relationships), the ACO should generally be only Xavi.
⚠⚠ The sentence lists her among three people it calls MDs, and every signature block of hers read for this page says Director. The desk does not conclude that she was promoted. The sentence is compressed, the forenames are bare, “ACO” is never expanded on the sheet, and no document read for this page records any change in her title. What can be said is that in June 2018 a colleague writing about who covers which account named her in a class he called MDs.25
The shape of the record, and it is a judgement
⚠ The desk hand classified a random sample of forty documents that carry her forename or her full name, reading the passage around the name in each. The buckets, so a reader can overrule them:
- She is the sender (her message, or her message quoted inside a chain): twenty one
- She is addressed (To, Cc, or greeted by name in a salutation): twelve
- She is described in someone else’s prose: four
- She is a name on a roster (an automated statement distribution, a diary entry, an auto-reply carried in a subject line): three
⚠⚠ This overturns an earlier desk estimate that had her mostly on rosters. She is the sender in twenty one of the forty, which is more than any other bucket and, by two documents, more than the other three combined. The margin is thin and is printed rather than rounded up. The roster class is real and large in absolute terms, because the Southern Financial valuation statement went out on a standing list for years, but it does not dominate the record.
On the name itself. She appears as Tazia Smith, as Tazia alone in internal traffic, in
the bank’s internal mail form as Tazia Smith/db/dbcom@DBAMERICAS, and behind a corporate
address and a market terminal handle that this page withholds. The scanning of this release
damages her forename in a recurring way: the leading T is dropped, giving azia Smith, and the
forename is also broken as Tazi a Smith and misread as Tazla, Tatia, raZIA and Taxia.
⚠ These damaged forms are worth naming because a reader searching the release for her will
otherwise miss sheets.26
Three negative results on the name, each a real answer. No middle name or initial appears anywhere. No married, maiden or alternative surname appears anywhere, and no sheet read for this page carries a “nee”, “formerly” or “f/k/a” form for her. And a different Deutsche Bank employee named Smith, with a different forename, appears on an unrelated mass distribution list; she is not an OCR variant of this subject and nothing on this page rests on her.26
⚠⚠ The bare surname is useless as a key. “Smith” matches unrelated people across the whole release, including on pages about matters that have nothing to do with her. Nothing on this page was built from the surname alone.26
What the documents do not show
Each of the following is an absence in the material read for this page, and each is scoped.
- No allegation against her was found anywhere in the release read for this page. She is a markets officer at a bank and every document read here treats her as one.27
- Nothing connects her to the bank’s later compliance history. No document read for this page places her in the 2018 negative media review, the Southern Financial know your customer remediation, or the 2019 closing of the accounts. Her record stops before that story starts.27
- No document read for this page places her in a room with the client. She is listed among those the bank meant to bring on 6 September 2013; she refers afterwards to “Friday’s meeting”; and a managing director wrote in January 2014 that she had reviewed holdings “at the client meeting”. ⚠ A plan to attend is not an attendance and a colleague’s report is not a record made in the room. The desk states what each sheet says and draws no attendance.27
- Nothing read for this page records what was decided about the notes she warned on, whether any Metropolitan Opera nomination was made for the client or approved, what “it” was to be called “southern trust company”, or why her record ends where it does.27
- No document read for this page states where she worked before Deutsche Bank or after 2018, and none records a departure.27
Privacy, and what this page withholds on purpose
✅ The desk reproduces no telephone number, fax number, mobile number or e-mail address for her, in any form, from any sheet of this release. That is a decision, not a gap, and the page prints it so the record shows the decision. The producer’s own handling of those four fields is not uniform across this release; nothing here completes a redaction from any other copy, and this page nowhere says which sheets carry which state.28
⚠ Account balances, account numbers, transfer amounts and statement identifiers appear in this part of the release. None is reproduced here, none is characterised, and the page does not say where any of them is printed. Trade prices and share counts that a message states as the content of the message itself are printed, because the message is the document.28
⚠ Several people named on the sheets read for this page are left unnamed here, because nothing on this page turns on them: the other bank’s client in the September 2014 allocation dispute, the support staff who typed and circulated documents, and the recipients of her last message.28

Extent and shape of the record. ⚠ The desk did not read in full the released material that names her, and does not characterise it here; this page rests on the documents cited in these footnotes. Name forms, and three negative results. Confirmed forms:
Tazia Smith;Taziastanding alone in internal traffic; the bank’s internal mail formTazia Smith/db/dbcom@DBAMERICAS; a corporate e-mail address and a market terminal handle, both withheld here. Scanning damage observed on the forename:azia Smithwith the leading T dropped,Tazi a Smithwith the forename split, andTazla,Tatia,raZIA,laziaandTaxia; on the surname,Smit,Smi,Smitland a family of mangled Lotus Notes strings. ⚠ Adding every damaged form to the clean ones enlarges the set of documents by well under one per cent, because a sheet that damages her name in one place almost always prints it correctly in another. Negative results, each checked and each a real answer: no middle name or initial anywhere; no married, maiden or alternative surname anywhere; no “nee”, “formerly” or “f/k/a” form anywhere. ⚠⚠ A different Deutsche Bank employee sharing the surname and having a different forename appears on an unrelated internal distribution list at EFTA01426543 p.1 [text layer only]; she is a distinct person, not a variant of this subject, and nothing on this page rests on her. ⚠⚠ The bare surname matches unrelated people across the whole release and is not used as a key anywhere on this page. ↩ ↩2 ↩3 -
Absences, each scoped. No allegation against her was found in the release read for this page. ⚠⚠ This is a narrow check against a population the desk did not read in full, and is stated as one. The desk ran a screen for complainant and victim vocabulary against the documents carrying her name and found none; it ran no systematic adverse sweep and searched no derived store. The compliance absence was checked the same way: the desk found no document carrying her name together with the vocabulary of the bank’s 2018 negative media review, the know your customer remediation, or the 2019 account closures, and states that as an absence in a checked population rather than as proof she had no part in them. ⚠ On attendance: EFTA01350658 p.1 records an intention to bring her; EFTA01362440 p.1 records her own later reference to
Friday's meeting; EFTA01351728 p.1 records a colleague’s account of a client meeting. No document read for this page is a record made in a room with her and the client in it. ⚠ A deeper pass is owed and this page records the debt rather than implying it does not exist. ↩ ↩2 ↩3 ↩4 ↩5 -
Privacy decisions, recorded as decisions. ✅ The desk reproduces no telephone number, fax number, mobile number or e-mail address for her, in any form, from any sheet. The producer’s own treatment of those four fields is not uniform across this release, and this page does not describe that treatment sheet by sheet. This is an editorial choice within the editor’s standing ruling that contact values of non-survivors may be published; the page prints the choice so that the record shows a decision and not an oversight. ⚠⚠ Nothing on this page completes a redaction from another copy of any document, and the page does not state which sheets carry a value in the clear and which carry it covered. ⚠ Account numbers, account balances, transfer amounts, statement request identifiers and the sizes of proposed allocations appear on sheets in this part of the release. None is reproduced, none is described, and the page nowhere indicates where any of them is printed. Share counts and execution prices that form the substance of a quoted message are printed, because in those messages the number is the message. ⚠ People left unnamed by choice: the other bank’s client in the September 2014 allocation dispute, who is identified on the sheet by forename only; two support staff named on the October 2013 agenda run; an equity trading colleague on the 2017 threads; and the recipient of her last message, who has no connection to any matter on this page. ↩ ↩2 ↩3
