Robert Trivers is the evolutionary biologist who, in his own name or in that of his research foundation, was paid by three separate Jeffrey Epstein vehicles between 2010 and 2017, and whose own e-mail to Epstein carries header dates, across the documents the surname search returns, running from April 2009 to April 2019.¹²¹⁵¹⁶ The release records the money in an unusually complete form: the request, the promise, the instruction to the administrator, the approval, the bank’s own record of the wire, the cheque image, the recipient’s acknowledgement of receipt, and, a year after the last payment, the question of whether to file an information return on it, and the answer.^41776219518 In April 2023 his name stands in the clear on a list of ten names circulated inside the FBI so that the bureau could say whether it objected to the Financial Crimes Enforcement Network releasing information about the people and entities on it.¹⁴¹⁹

Nothing on this page is a finding of wrongdoing. Where the record holds his own words about Epstein, they are set out below in his own wording.

The approach, 2009–2010

The earliest sheet opened for this page that concerns him is not his. On 10 November 2009 John Brockman of the Edge Foundation wrote to Epstein under the subject “trivers in Nature”, forwarding a journal editor’s summary, and added a paragraph of his own marked “CONFIDENTIAL”: “Btw, I forgot to mention when I told you he had called me…He needs some support for research, i.e. a budget to hire people to help with his book, etc. but he’s embarrassed to ask you. I told him to write up a proposal and send it to you which he’ll do or not do.”¹³

The proposal arrived four months later. On 25 March 2010, under the subject “Biosocial Research Foundation”, Trivers wrote to Epstein: “at an earlier meeting you suggested the possibility of supporting my work and said you preferred supporting people to projects; that was music to my ears since no one has lost in intellectual value/dollar spent while investing in me but the same can not be said for all my projects”. He then set out his position: “i am ineligible for whatever reasons to receive federal support of any sort and have been for over 30 years; even large foundations like the templeton which solicited a proposal, turn me down, yet if others write me into their grants as window dressing, they often get their grants and i get a little something on the side”. He described the vehicle he wanted funded: “as a result i set up the Biosocial Research Foundation in 1992 (tax id # and date of incorporation per the attached) to support my work by getting interested individuals to donate (chiefly gordon getty when i was in california); in more recent years, it is my own money that goes into the foundation, at least escaping taxes. when i got $250,000 for my foundation from my crafoord prize, this was a real sum of money and supported my research for three years. it is now exhausted”. The ask was scaled, and it named an endpoint: “i would be most grateful if you would consider a donation to my foundation of any amount, 25 would get me through my current shortfall, although 50 or 100 thousand would guarantee solvency for a year or two, and would in any case take me through until my self-deception book was earning enough to contribute to the foundation”. He closed: “i don’t want this request to be a burden to you in any way and value our friendship more than financial support; nevertheless, i would be most grateful for any support you could give”. The foundation’s tax identification number is referred to on the sheet but is not printed on it, and no identifier is reproduced here; the mailing address beneath his name is barred by the producing party.⁴

The first payment: 28 March to 8 April 2010

Three days later, at 01:11:46 +0000 on Sunday 28 March 2010, Epstein answered a different message of Trivers’, one attaching three paper summaries and signed “robert”, with a single line: “i am starting you off with 25k”.¹⁷ At 18:52:01 +0000 the same day the reply came back: “many thanks indeed”.²⁰

The money is on a bank statement. The J.P. Morgan statement of THE C O U Q FOUNDATION INC for the period 4/1/10 to 4/30/10 carries, under “Payments & Transfers”, a single wire dated 04/08: “Fedwire Debit Via: West Corp Fcu Sdim/▮ A/C: Bay Federal Credit Union Scotts Valley CA 95066 Ben: Biosocial Research Foundation”, $25,000.00. Under “Deposits & Credits” the same statement carries one entry, dated 04/09, the following day: a book transfer credit of $50,000.00 whose originator line reads ”▮ Enhanced Education”. The account number, routing detail and transaction references printed on that sheet are not reproduced here.⁷

So the order on the C.O.U.Q. Foundation’s own statement is the payment out first and the Enhanced Education credit second, by one day.⁷

Who paid, and who administered it

Three payers appear in these documents, and a fourth name, HBRK Associates Inc., is where the administrator sat rather than a payer.

Richard Kahn wrote from HBRK Associates on Epstein’s accounting side throughout. On 3 April 2014, under the subject “Robert Trivers”, he told Epstein: “FYI - =rant agreement was signed yesterday and check went out yesterday as =ell”. The = characters are quoted-printable soft breaks carried onto the face of that sheet and are printed here as the sheet prints them.²¹ On 11 January 2016 he set out a two-line ledger for Epstein under the line “Regarding Trivers R=1; Please advise”: “May 2015 – 20k from Enhance=” and “April 2014 – 30k from Enhanced”.⁸

The pattern of approval is visible in a single May 2015 thread. Trivers wrote: “i wonder if i can ask your Enhanced Education Foundation to send along the<=r> promised 20óas you can see from the attached, i am eager to “buy&=uot; a set of data it would be either impossible or very expensive to get”. Epstein replied “yes of course”, addressed to Trivers and to Kahn together. That sheet carries quoted-printable damage and character corruption throughout the quoted message, and neither is repaired here.²²

Two grant instruments are among the documents opened for this page, and both name the payer as the Enhanced Learning Foundation rather than Enhanced Education. The first is a one-sheet application headed “PROPOSAL: Enhanced Learning Foundation $30,000 Biosocial Research 2016”, carrying at its foot the typed name “Dr Robert Trivers” over “Biosocial Research Foundation” and two barred address lines. There is no signature: the name is printed in the document’s own body face, with no rule beneath it and no ink. It sets out five numbered research headings under “Evolutionary Theory applied to Social World”, in order: “Species selection”, “Heterogamety”, “The evolutionary logic of honor killings”, “Homosexuality” and “Human evolutionary genetics”. The fourth ends: “Transexuality is a brand new phenomenon made possible by advances in controlling phenotypic expression, so that some children are already receiving hormone therapy to adjust their external phenotype to their inferred internal one. Crucial topic ripe for a review.” The bold headings are on the sheet, and “Transexuality” is a sentence inside the fourth heading rather than a heading of its own.¹⁰

2017: one week in January

On Wednesday 11 January 2017 Epstein’s day sheet reads, in italic type, “10:30am Bob Trivers’ stopped by (▮)”. The same day’s entries include a breakfast and an afternoon appointment with Leon Black and a 3:30pm “Appt w/Rich and Darren”. A contact value in parentheses after the Trivers entry is barred.³ Writing to Epstein more than two years later, Trivers dated that meeting to the same day but put it at a different hour: “going over my calendar for 2017 i see a meeting in NYC on January 11—ten days earlier you said, you don’t need to meet with me to get support, just tell me you need some—i said, many thanks, but i enjoy seeing you if you have the time, so we had a typical meeting on the 11th, 12:25 at your Central Park home”.²³

Five days after that meeting, on Monday 16 January 2017 at a time the sheet gives as 4:33 PM with no zone marked, Trivers wrote to Epstein: “many thanks for another warm and fun visit to your home, love your staff as usual”, and then: “regarding the 30 grand you kindly promised i know you prefer to mail checks”. Two lines of his address beneath his name are barred on that sheet.⁶

Epstein forwarded that message to Kahn. The sheet gives the forward as sent at 3:41 PM on January 16 and the message inside it as sent at 4:33 PM the same day; neither clock carries a zone and the two do not reconcile on one, so no order is asserted between them here. At 16:02:13 +0000 on Tuesday 17 January 2017, under the subject line “Trivers”, Kahn wrote back: “please confirm ok to send drivers 30k from gratitude”. The sheet prints “drivers”, with a lower-case d; it is not repaired here. Thirteen minutes later, at 16:15:51 +0000, Epstein answered with one lower-case word: “yes”.⁶²⁴

Gratitude America, Ltd. cheque no. 305 is dated 1/17/2017. It is drawn on Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas, made out to “Dr. Robert Trivers”, and reads “Thirty Thousand and 00/100” against a figure of “**30,000.00”. A manuscript signature in ink runs over the AUTHORIZED SIGNATURE rule, and a manuscript annotation crosses the face of the instrument. No address value from that sheet is reproduced here. The extraction of that sheet reads the figure as “10,000.00”; the image prints “**30,000.00”, and the written amount on the same line reads “Thirty Thousand and 00/100”.²

A second copy of the same cheque is produced inside the bank’s own exception record for it. That record gives “Exception Type: High dollar pull”, “Previous Decision: Refer”, “Previous Reason: Signature not on file”, “Amount 30,000.00” and “Check # 305”, and prints across the middle of the sheet, in bold, ”*** Signature not on file ***”. Account, routing and sequence values on that sheet are not reproduced here.²⁵ This is the payment Gratitude America, Ltd.’s own page lists as cheque no. 305.

Nine days later, on 26 January 2017, Kahn wrote to Epstein under the subject “Gratitude 1099’s”: “please advise if ok to request Social Security numbers from Trivers, Rubin and Bottstein thank you”. No number is printed on that sheet, and none is reproduced here.²⁶

August 2017, and the answer about the 1099s

The unlabelled clock fields on the 25 August 2017 sheets are Eastern time, and the sheets themselves fix it twice. The forward that Kahn quotes as sent “at 7:28 AM” carries its own RFC header Fri, 25 Aug 2017 11:28:05 +0000; and Kahn’s reply, quoted on the next sheet as sent “at 12:11 PM”, carries the header Fri, 25 Aug 2017 16:11:32 +0000. Four hours in both cases, so the unlabelled fields in this run are Eastern Daylight Time. The two clock times below are given on that basis: 7:28 AM is the field the header directly anchors, and 7:27 AM is the forwarded message’s own date line on the sheet whose header fixes 7:28. No zone is asserted for any sheet outside this run.²⁷¹²⁸

At 7:27 AM Eastern on Friday 25 August 2017 Trivers wrote to Epstein, above his own message of the night before (“great talking to you start to finish / most grateful for the 25”), a postscript about where to send the money: “check should be sent, as it was last time, to me at ▮ that way my ex can deposit it directly in the foundation’s account, Biosocial Research Foundation”, and “check can be made out to the Foundation”. The address is barred.²⁷

Epstein forwarded it to Kahn at 7:28 AM Eastern. At 16:11:32 +0000 Kahn answered: “Confirming 25k from enhanced as we have done in the past / I will have Darren draft agreement / Ok for check to go out today before agreement returned / Please advise / Thank you”. At 16:13:15 +0000, two minutes later, Epstein replied with one lower-case word: “yes”.¹²⁸

Six days after that, on 31 August 2017, Trivers wrote: “Jeffrey / many thanks for the 25, check safely arrived and deposited in my Foundation”.⁹

The second grant instrument is the report back. A one-sheet document headed “Accounting—for Richard Kahn—04/22/18—Robert Trivers” opens: “Enhanced Learning Foundation Grant to Biosocial Research Foundation ~08/27/2017.” It states that “The Grant was spent almost entirely on research related to theoretical topics: Honor killings and Lynchings in modern America”, and itemises five lines and a total: $18,000 for “Research by Dr Amy Jacobson”, whom the sheet describes as having worked on case studies of honour killings and on the history of lynching in the United States; $4900 for computer work, “including editing and U-Tubing of talk on Honor Killing and, separately, on the Lynching of Lennon Lacy in North Carolina in 2014”; $5800 for a consultation with the mother of the victim in that case; $850 for taxis and $640 for airfare. The last line reads “$30,190 TOTAL”.¹¹

Eleven days after that accounting, in a long letter of 3 May 2018 headed “PERSONAL AND CONFIDENTIAL-GUARDED BY MUTUAL CLIENT-ADVISOR RELATIONSHIP”, he recalled the same payment as a larger one: “i did the accounting early the other day for the 30 grand you kindly gave the BRF in August 2017”. Four figures for that one grant are printed in the record and this page states all four: 25 in Kahn’s confirmation of 25 August 2017, 25 in Trivers’ own acknowledgement six days later, a spending total of $30,190 in his April 2018 accounting to Kahn, and 30 in his May 2018 description of what he was given.¹⁹¹¹²⁹

On 31 January 2018 Kahn put a five-line list to Epstein under the subject “gratitude 1099’s”: “plea=e advise if you would like to file for any of the following for 2017 payme=ts:”, followed by “Krassner 20k / Drivers 30k / charlie albright 50k / peter fenwich 15k / noam 20k”. Epstein replied the same day: “no”.⁵¹⁸

The entry reading “Drivers 30k” is not spelled as Trivers spells his name. What supports reading it as him is on the documents rather than in this page’s judgement: the writer is the same correspondent who a year earlier wrote “please confirm ok to send drivers 30k from gratitude” under a subject line reading “Trivers”, above a forwarded message from Robert Trivers about “the 30 grand you kindly promised”; three of the four other names on the list (Krassner, charlie albright, noam) correspond to payees in Gratitude America’s cheque series as set out on that entity’s page; and every one of the five entries on the list is a personal name and not an institution’s, under a subject line reading “gratitude 1099’s”. Of the eighteen 2017-dated Gratitude America cheques in the Deutsche Bank production run, five are payable to a natural person, and those five go to four people: Dr. Robert Trivers at $30,000, Charlie Albright at $50,000, Noam Chomsky at $20,000 and Paul Krassner at $5,000 twice. Among those eighteen cheques, Robert Trivers is the only individual payee of $30,000, and the amount reaches him only in that company. The list and the cheque run do not agree on amounts in every case: the list reads “Krassner 20k” where the two 2017 Krassner cheques in the run total $10,000, so the correspondence relied on here is between names and not between amounts.⁶²⁵³⁰

The amount by itself does not distinguish him, and this page does not rest on it. A second Gratitude America cheque of exactly $30,000 was written in 2017: no. 314, dated 8/2/2017, payable to The O’Gorman Garden, an institution and not one of the personal names on Kahn’s list, and it is printed in the same cheque table on the entity’s page that the sentence above cites. What the amount does is agree with an identification the 1099 list and the January 2017 exchange make on their own.³¹

What Epstein said he would and would not fund

The last request for money in the documents opened for this page is dated 24 June 2018, and it follows a retraction. It stands at the head of the sheet, above both the retraction and Epstein’s reply to it. In the innermost message of that thread Trivers wrote: “you had nothing to do with how Chapman acted and i apologise for suggesting it might be otherwise”, and “it was entirely against me, partly motivated by a spiteful ex-friend”. He set his position in a wider frame: “the basic problem is simple—i am going against a strong national trend—well-known man after well-known man is being brought low for alleged his misbehaviour toward women—in some case well-deserved prison time (Cosby and perhaps Weinstein) in many other cases, simply being run out of institutions—exactly my fate”. Epstein answered, “trump ok, lets concentrate on you. trade war maybe good. shakes things up”, and Trivers came back, in the message at the head of the sheet: “Many thanks. By all means let’s concentrate on me and not Trump. If Enhanced Learning can make its annual gift of 30 that would have a huge positive effect on me and my future. Let the market take care of itself.” The order is taken from the nesting of the quoted headers: the two inner clocks carry no zone, only the outermost header is +0000, and the three do not reconcile on one clock, so no interval is asserted.³²

By March 2019 the payments had stopped and Trivers asked why. On Friday 15 March 2019 at 11:05 PM he wrote:

short answer to your question—after 7 years of continuous support, you seemed to flip, no support at all for past two years nor response to requests

He described a failed appointment in the same message, “hey said they loved me but offered me “monkey money”, as we call it in Jamaica, $5500/semseter—my God, Jeffrey, rent is 8 grand, i would like to eat, have a modest social life and an occasional psychosexual experience—i would return to Jamaica $15,000 in debt”, and asked, in bold on the sheet, “can you name a time/date when i can reach you by phone?” The misspellings are as printed.³³

Epstein answered at 7:30 AM on Saturday 16 March 2019, and the answer is printed in full here because parts of it have circulated cut:

i can call you today if you like. my recollection is that we sat together . I thought that you might want to focus on transgender biology . people would be interestsesd and i would fund. I am a true beileiver in your talents. my understanding and of course it could be incorrect. was that honor killing work was detrimental for you. as was the knee hip ratio in sprinters etc. . little public interest where the genetics of exceptional and transgender would be helpful. I m always o f the view that i should do no harm. and said I wouldnt give you drugs. if you asked because it was bad for you. giving you money for subjects that would be in my strong view detrimental to your future. creates a problem. you said you would get back to me and then told me that chapman had offered you work. In my view. you were telling me that others would support your honor killing etc. you then asked about the markets and i said sit tight. we can talk at anytime³³

The spacing and the misspellings are on the face of the sheet and are not repaired.³³

That message treats three subjects, not two, and gives them two treatments. One is offered funding: “you might want to focus on transgender biology . people would be interestsesd and i would fund.” Two are set against it: “was that honor killing work was detrimental for you. as was the knee hip ratio in sprinters etc. .” Of the three, only honour killings is a heading of the 2016 proposal set out above. “Transexuality” stands in that proposal as a sentence inside the “Homosexuality” heading, and the knee-hip ratio in sprinters does not appear in the proposal at all; the sprinting work is the subject of a separate 2015 thread.³³¹⁰²²

Trivers replied later the same day: “not quite sure why you thought Honour killing would be detrimental”, traced his own reasoning on the genetics of male homosexuality back forty-five years (“my reasoning goes way back to when i was first working on basic theory 45 years ago”), and wrote of the honour-killings work: “i have spent 18 months with David Haig solving this problem—including the factor of inheritance you stressed a while ago—i have also mastered the literature, both data and socio-cultural solutions, and they are nowhere near the truth—would writing up my best version of the truth be ‘detrimental’?—might subject me to some abuse but i could not care less—this is a ghastly problem someone has to solve this problem in theory, might as well be me”. He also wrote: “yes i agree it is time to write up my thoughts on transsexuality—i don’t think they would take long but we shall see”.³⁴

Two days earlier, at 02:06:01 +0000 on 14 March 2019, he had sent the letter that itemises the money. Five lines of it are barred by the producing party. What prints reads: “i want to make it clear to you / you have supported me most generously over the years / i have recently revised the facts / 2011 25 grand COUG / 2013–2017 between 20 and 30 grand a year ELF / with the exception of 2016 when it was 40,000 because you slapped a 10,000 “late fee” on yourself for forgetting to send 30 grand, as promised early in January”. The bold is on the sheet.³⁵

The same letter is the source for the standing offer to universities: “another example of your extreme generosity—you called me once when i was waiting outside a CUNY building waiting for an interview for a possible job—when you heard that, you said, if it comes up and would be useful tell them you have a friend who will donate 100 grand to them, 80 to be put in a research fund under my control”. He continued: “well they had no job worth discussing and later i asked if i could use the same ploy should a University have a plausible job—yes, you said—but that did not happen until Chapman, where the President was most eager to make contact with you”.³⁵

That offer is not only his recollection. On 4 January 2018 he wrote to Epstein: “attached a message i just sent to President Struppa of Chapman—i am certain that your gift will do the trick—and that the West Coast is indeed more convivial and supportive than the East”. Epstein’s reply on the same sheet is one word: “Nice”.³⁶ The searches set out below, which include the university president’s surname, return no document recording a payment by Epstein or by any of his vehicles to that university; what these sheets show is the sentence Trivers wrote and the answer he got.¹⁶

In the May 2018 letter he set out what the offer had been worth to him and what he now wanted instead: “i had taken it for granted that i would get a worthwhile position and that your kind offer of 100 grand would come into play, so i would have access to 80 grand almost at once—so i could relax (and not trouble you for any for at least 2 years)”, and then, in bold, “hence i am now asking if you would be kind enough to give the BRF 45 for 18 months, or 30 for 12 months if you prefer”.²⁹

Trivers in the house

The March 2019 letter is also the fullest description in the record of what the visits were like, and it is his own:

so we had a typical meeting on the 11th, 12:25 at your Central Park home, pleasant lunch with a glass of wine for me though you do not drink, always a woman or two present, 25+, and your driver taking me straight to Penn Station²³

He described a second meeting in the same letter:

the second meeting was on December 28th in Palm Beach, one of the most pleasant with anyone ever—i asked you why you liked white women, when you asked me about black, and we both laughed, you explained ‘Bella Russians”, i told you about “two pants Trivers”

The unbalanced quotation mark is on the sheet.²³ He summarised: “i could give you other examples of your extreme generosity but let me just summarise by saying you have been of enormous benefit to me in my life”, and “when you once said, perhaps in Palm Beach, that there would never be a time when you would not support me, i joked to friends this was better than social security—tax free and you invested your money more wisely than did the US government, so they might go under but you never would”. The letter ends: “the point to me is that i enjoy you as an organism, a very bright and far-ranging mind, with personal integrity”.²³

Trivers on Epstein, and Epstein on Trivers

On 20 October 2015 Epstein and Noam Chomsky exchanged short messages about a personal matter, in the course of which Epstein wrote at 8:50 AM “reciprocal altruism at work”. Chomsky answered at 8:52: “Hah. One for Bob Trivers.” At 9:00 Epstein wrote: “i am his major funder. he got thrown out of rutgers for good this time”. Chomsky replied at 10:10: “Good choice. He’s a great scientist and fine guy. Thrown out of Rutgers? I didn’t hear anything about that. Was just down there for talks. Should have asked.” The clocks inside that thread carry no zone; the sheet’s own header date is Tue, 20 Oct 2015 19:22:39 +0000, and the order above is taken from the nesting of the quoted headers rather than from the clocks.³⁷

In the long letter of 3 May 2018 Trivers described telling a third party what he thought of the case against Epstein: “i said that i thought you had acted with integrity, both in the protection the young women received from you and your woman friend whom i knew well, having met her through you several times, that most were not in fact under age of consent (17), almost always massages, you had served your time for the crime and then, if i have this correct, paid several additional young women circa a million a piece—not to silence them but rather to minimise any harm caused by the publicity—i also mentioned your regret that you brought in Derschoswein with his aggressive tactic—private investigator etc instead of using a local lawyer to talk calm sense with the DA, at which point you probably would not have received any time at all”. The name “Derschoswein” is as the sheet prints it; the letter does not identify the person it refers to, and this page supplies no identification.²⁹

His own qualification of that position is in the record, ten months later. On 8 March 2019 he wrote to Epstein about a newspaper article: “yes that is a strong NY Times piece in your favour—a couple of minor errors—it was not prison but county jail and it was a bit more than massages—but the piece is convincing that it would be a long haul to prove federal charges against you and it should quiet down much of the press frenzy”. He went on: “meanwhile i am suffering some whiplash from the unwise comment i made that your behaviour was not “so heinous” because of later sexual maturation in the past—my host at East Carolina University told me right after picking me up at the Raleigh/Durham airport that someone had seen my comments on the internet and reported them to the Department Chair and it climbed up to the Provost who insisted that i meet with the Department Chair and the Dean to be questioned before i would be permitted to lecture”. He added: “the meeting went well and so did my two talks—though i heard the original complainer had hooked in 6 more biology faculty who then skipped the talks—so i may put something on the internet myself to protect me from this in the future”.³⁸

In the same message he addressed the end of the funding: “am still perplexed about your flipping regarding me—it started with the Chapman debacle so i wondered if you thought i had raised your name with others—i raised it with no one, not at Chapman, nor anywhere else—your name came up only once when Gordon raised it”.³⁸

April 2023: a name on a deconfliction list

Four years after Epstein’s death his name appears on an internal FBI list. The chain is preserved whole in one document.

On Tuesday 28 March 2023 at 3:21 PM a supervisory special agent described as the FBI FinCEN Liaison Officer wrote to colleagues in the New York Field Office under the subject “URGENT - Deconfliction request”: “As way of background, there is a civil lawsuit in the Federal District Court for the SDNY against banks based on the banks’ provision of financial services to sex offender Jeffrey Epstein. Specifically, an unnamed Epstein victim (and a claimed class of victims, “Doe”) are suing both JP Morgan Chase and Deutsche Bank. The government of the U.S. Virgin Islands is separately suing JP Morgan. Both the USVI and JP Morgan are seeking disclosure of the SARs in that matter, and all parties are seeking disclosure in the Doe matters.” The message continues: “FinCEN has been asked to release several SARs related to Epstein”, and: “As a result, FinCEN reached out to the FBI to deconflict. Attached you will find a file with names of individuals and entities referenced in your investigation (NY-3027571). Please review the names and let me know if you object the release of information related to any of the names indicated.”³⁹

The next afternoon the request was sent again. On Wednesday 29 March 2023 at 4:13 PM, forwarding the same chain under the subject “FW: URGENT - Deconfliction request”, the liaison officer wrote: “I am following up on this request. If you need additional time, let me know. If no response is received, we will have to respond, “no objection”.” The paragraph is in regular type throughout; what carries the point is the wording, which states what silence would produce: on no answer, the answer given would be no objection. It prints on the same sheet as the list below.¹⁴

On Tuesday 4 April 2023 at 8:17 AM the same officer sent a further list: “Here are 10 additional names provided by FinCEN to deconflict. Provide your response by COB tomorrow, 4/5/2023.” A ten-row table follows. Seven of the ten rows are barred by the producing party. The three that print in the clear read “Nautilus Inc”, “Sothebys” and “Trivers, Robert”.¹⁴

The answer that day came in stages, and it changed. At 10:16 AM a special agent of the New York Field Office wrote: “I apologize for the delay. USAO has not been releasing information due to an appeal pending regarding Ghislaine Maxwell. However, we don’t necessarily have an objection to release.” At 10:26 AM the liaison officer asked, “Just to confirm, there is no objection, including those mentioning Ghislaine Maxwell, correct?”, and at 10:30 AM was told: “No, however keep in mind that USAO has not been releasing anything related to her or Epstein due to a pending appeal.” At 11:39 AM the position reversed: “After consultation with the NY CDC office, the FBI objects to the release of information as it pertains to an ongoing matter, specifically the appeal of the Ghislaine Maxwell conviction. Please relay this to FinCen.” The liaison officer then asked back, in a message whose own header is timed Tue, 04 Apr 2023 15:48:51 +0000: “Another question, the objection is just for Maxwell or for all the 45 names submitted?” The Sent: fields on the messages beneath it carry no zone and are given here as the sheets print them; the four-hour gap between the outermost header and the last of them is consistent with those fields being Eastern time, and no interval is asserted from them.¹⁹⁴⁰

What the sheets say about the list is what the sheets say: the names are of “individuals and entities referenced in your investigation”, and the question put to the FBI was whether it objected to information about them being released in the bank litigation.³⁹ The sheets read for this page do not state that any suspicious activity report names him, and the search run to test that is set out below and was built so that it could return one.¹⁶

What the search returned

The corpus of released files was searched with the FTS5 index on 2026-09-10 in the following forms, and returned the following. Counts are documents unless a page count is given beside them.

The surname alone reaches 404 documents the full name does not, so the full-name figure is not the record.¹⁶

Damaged spellings were then probed, and six forms reached documents that no correct spelling of the surname reaches: "Trivets" (17 pages, 17 documents, of which 11 are outside the surname set and 9 of those 11 are genuinely this subject; the other two are a FedEx shipping record and a passage about kitchen trivets); "Trivet" (37 pages, 33 documents, of which 5 outside the surname set are genuinely this subject; the rest are OCR noise on brokerage statements, FedEx invoices and printed forms, where the string stands for “Invoice”, “Private”, “Travel”, “Instructions” and the like, plus one unrelated surname on a Virgin Islands permit); "Travers" (130 pages, 84 documents, of which 2 outside the surname set are genuinely this subject; the great majority are other subjects entirely, among them a bank employee in the Southern Trust account-opening correspondence, a limited partner of that surname, a Palm Beach cross-street and French à travers); "Triver" (16 pages, 15 documents, 6 outside the set, 4 of them genuine, the trailing s lost to a quoted-printable break); "Tnvers" (1 document, genuine, a 2011 dinner list); "Trivera" (1 document, genuine, an address field). The phrase "drivers 30k" returns 7 documents, 3 of them outside the surname set: the January 2018 1099 exchange discussed above, where the misspelling is on the face of the sheet and not in the extraction.⁵¹⁶

Twenty-five documents are therefore reachable through one of those damaged or mistyped forms and through none of the correct-spelling queries listed above. Every one of the seven "Trivet" and "Travers" documents was rendered for this page, and on every one the sheet prints “Trivers” or “trivers” correctly and it is the extraction that damages it, which is the same fault the rest of this section describes and not a different subject: an Epstein day sheet for 4 December 2013 reading “12:30pm Lunch w/Robert Trivers” (twice, under two Bates numbers); a 2016 day-sheet entry, “TBD Evening Lecture by Robert Trivers at the U of Kentucky on Evolution and Logic of Self-Deception”; a message of 5 April 2015 from Lesley Groff whose subject line and attachment are both “Bob Trivers”; a 2009 message from Epstein whose To: field reads “trivers”; and two copies of an Epstein schedule for Monday 6 April 2015 carrying the line “Reminder: Robert Trivers” in a reminder list between “Reminder : Jabor Y” and a barred entry.^4142434445 These returned nothing: "Trivors", "Trivere", "Trlvers", "Tdvers", "Trivars", "Triviers", "Trivcs", "Ttivers", "Trivrs", "Trlvcrs", "Trwers", "Tuvers", "Trivees", "Tnvcrs", "Trivais", "Trivrrs", "Ttrivers". "Trivcrs" returns one page, already inside the surname set.¹⁶

Act against mention. Every one of the 1,056 pages returned by the surname was classified mechanically, and each of the 969 documents was assigned its strongest page class:

A random sample of thirty documents from the last row was read in the extraction and hand-classified: one is authored by him with the From: line missing from the extraction; two record a payment or a payment instruction to him; one carries him on a Cc: line the classifier missed; four are scheduling records; five are bibliographic citations sitting inside longer documents; five are news or promotional texts about him; three are invitations naming him as an expected guest; one is a contact list; one is a government name list; and eight are messages between other people discussing him.¹⁶

So a little under a quarter of the returned documents carry an act of his in the strict sense, meaning a message he wrote, and rather more than three quarters are documents in which he is addressed, scheduled, cited or discussed. The duplication is heavy: the same message recurs under many production numbers, and several of the exchanges cited on this page were opened at more than one Bates number before one copy was chosen.¹⁶

Two further searches were run so that this page’s two negative statements could be falsified rather than merely repeated. (Trivers OR Trivets OR Triver) AND (SAR OR SARs OR "suspicious activity") returns one page in one document, which is another copy of the same April 2023 deconfliction chain; no document it returns links a suspicious activity report to him by name. "Struppa", the surname of the university president named in the January 2018 message, returns 12 pages in 12 documents, and Chapman AND (Epstein OR Gratitude OR Enhanced) AND (donation OR gift OR pledge OR contribution OR check) returns 28 pages in 28 documents, none of which records a payment by Epstein or by any of his vehicles to that university. That conjunction requires a payment word, and the extraction of a cheque front need not carry one, so the payees of the eighteen 2017-dated Gratitude America cheques enumerated at [^grat2017] were checked as well, at the image for five of them and, for the other thirteen, from the extraction and the cheque table on the entity page, with the limits that footnote states. None is that university.¹⁶

Note on the documents

Forty-seven sheets across forty-one documents were read at the image at 400 dpi for this page; one line and two further sheets were re-read at 600 dpi; the quotations above are taken from the page images. Four footnotes cite a sheet that was not rendered; each says so in those words and says what verifying it would cost.

Four faults in the text layer matter to anyone re-deriving this page. The extraction of the cheque at [^cheque] reads the amount as “10,000.00” where the image prints “**30,000.00” and the written line reads “Thirty Thousand and 00/100”: a checker that measures agreement with the extraction would score the wrong figure as correct.² The extraction damages the surname in at least six ways that put twenty-five documents beyond the reach of any correct spelling.¹⁶ The extraction of the sheet at [^majorfunder] reads “i am his major binder” where the image prints “funder”; the f carries a crossbar and a full ascender, and the sheet was read against the extraction character by character before this page quoted it. The line was legible at 400 dpi and the 600 dpi re-read added nothing: the embedded raster on that sheet is 816×1056 at 96 ppi, so a higher render magnifies it and resolves no further detail. And several sheets in this correspondence carry quoted-printable soft breaks on their face, among them “=rant agreement”, “Enhance=”, “Th=nk you”, “plea=e advise” and ”&=uot;”, which are what the documents print and are reproduced unrepaired.²¹⁸²²⁵

Field states, since a rule is not a signature and a blank is not a bar: the cheque at [^cheque] is signed in ink over the AUTHORIZED SIGNATURE rule, and carries a further manuscript annotation across its face; the Subject fields on the sheets at [^accounting1] and [^kahn17] print the label with nothing after it, which is an empty printed field and not a redaction; the five lines in the middle of the letter at [^accounting1], the seven table rows at [^fincen1], and the address lines at [^proposal], [^kahn17] and [^aug2017fwd] are barred by the producing party.

Identity numbers, account numbers, telephone and fax numbers, e-mail addresses and residential addresses printed on these sheets are not reproduced on this page. Telephone-shaped values were checked by hand across the page as well as by the desk sweep.
