Edge Foundation, Inc. is the New York non-profit through which John Brockman published edge.org and ran the conferences, master classes and annual dinner of the circle he called the third culture. The released files contain no instrument of its own: not a certificate of incorporation, not a tax return, not a bank statement. What they do contain is the Foundation described in its own words in the footer of its own mailings, and its money described in somebody else’s books, because between 2001 and 2018 Jeffrey Epstein’s charitable vehicles paid it repeatedly and those payments were written down.11219 Six entries in the C.O.U.Q. Foundation’s Form 990-PF contribution statements record $330,000 to it between August 2001 and June 2005; later office ledgers, instructions and one valuation report record further sums in 2010, 2011, 2014 and 2018.12131415161719 The Foundation’s annual dinner is the activity the correspondence records most fully, and the record of it is a record of invitations, acceptances and refusals rather than of attendance.7621

Nothing set out here is an allegation against the Foundation or against anyone invited to its dinner. Publishing a website, holding a dinner and accepting a charitable cheque are ordinary acts. What the documents carry is an unusually complete picture of who paid for one of them.

Several of the emails quoted below come from productions whose printed pages carry transmission damage, so that a character is replaced by ”=” or a word runs into its neighbour. Damage is reproduced as printed and identified in the footnote. No character inside a quotation has been mended, and no value the production withholds has been supplied from another copy.

What the documents say it is

The Foundation’s own account of its legal status is a single sentence at the foot of its mailings. A 2005 mailing preserved in the release closes: “Copyright © 2005 by EDGE Foundation, Inc. All Rights Reserved. Published by EDGE Foundation, Inc., 5 East 59th Street, New York, NY 10022 EDGE Foundation, Inc. is a nonprofit private operating foundation under Section 501(c) (3) of the Internal Revenue Code.”1 A 2010 mailing repeats it with the section number unbroken, gives the same street address, and prints a masthead of three: Brockman as “Editor and Publisher,” Russell Weinberger as “AssociatePublisher” and an editorial assistant not named here.2 A 2006 printout of the Foundation’s own dinner page carries the same two-line masthead above a copyright notice whose rendering has collapsed to “Copyright C 2006 by Edoe_fogn_d_ation,inc”.5

Brockman’s own signature block describes him as “President” over “Edge Foundation, Inc.” at 5 East 59th Street in 2012 and at 260 Fifth Avenue in 2016 and 2018.4622 No document read for this page names any other officer, director or trustee, states the Foundation’s state of incorporation, gives its employer identification number, or reports its assets, income or expenditure.

Two file indexes of Epstein’s charitable entities record that his own organisations kept folders on it. The index of the C.O.U.Q. Foundation’s “Charitable Contributions/Consulting Agreements” lists “Edge Foundation Inc.” as its second item; the index of Enhanced Education’s papers lists “Edge Foundation/John Brockman” as its thirteenth.2324 Neither index shows what either folder contained, and neither folder is in the release.

Money from Epstein’s charities

The tax returns, 2001 to 2005

The Foundation appears by name in four of the C.O.U.Q. Foundation’s Form 990-PF contribution statements, filed under that charity’s own employer identification number. Every entry that carries a purpose column is marked unrestricted:

12131415

These are the most solid figures on this page, because a Form 990-PF statement of contributions paid is the payer’s own return to the Internal Revenue Service rather than a mention in a letter. The $150,000 of June 2005 is the largest single sum the released files attach to the Foundation, and it falls in the same return year as the $50,000 of April 2005. No statement read here records a contribution to it in the years ending February 2001, 2004 or 2007, and the C.O.U.Q. returns after 2007 are not among the documents cited here. The C.O.U.Q. Foundation page records the February 2003 entry; the other five are added here.

2010 and 2011: an instruction, a lost address and a ledger line

On the morning of June 30, 2010 Epstein wrote to his accountant Richard Kahn: “send ‘ohn brockman 50k from foundation for edge..” followed by a second, unrelated instruction.25 Kahn asked which vehicle to use, noting that one of them “only has 47,000 in checking account”; Epstein answered, “enhanced ed”.25 Later the same day the payment stalled on a signature, and Epstein’s answer to that was one word: “wait”.26 What happened next is not shown by the documents cited here. See John Brockman, where this exchange is set out in full.

On June 3, 2011 Epstein sent Kahn a one-line message with an empty subject field: “send 50k to edge/ brockman 501 c3”.3 Five days later Kahn wrote to Lesley Groff under the subject “Brickman - Edge Foundation”: “I have a $50,000 check Jeffrey asked to send to Brickman / Can you arrange or give me instructions to fed ex or messenger to him”. Groff first produced the details of a different man of a similar name; Kahn corrected himself, “i made mistake it is john brockman”; and Groff replied, “Ah brockman makes sense! Here are his detAils: / Well o don’t seem to have an address for him. Let me email him and ask where he wants it sent. I will get back to you”.27 The following day a calendar alarm in Epstein’s office read “Need address from Brockman to send check”.28

A summary of charitable giving for 2011, transmitted in January 2012 by Cecile de Jongh with Darren Indyke copied, carries a line dated June 7, 2011 for “Edge Foundation. Inc.” in the sum of $50,000, classified “C” for charitable general.1629 The ledger dates the payment to June 7 and the office did not know where to send it until June 9 or later, which is the difference between the date a cheque is written and the date it goes out. The sheet does not name the entity whose giving it summarises, although its transmitting email attaches a file named “2011_Summary_of Charitable_Giving.pdf” and its other lines are dominated by Virgin Islands recipients.1629

The three-year summary and the 2014 list

An undated “SUMMARY OF ENHANCED EDUCATION,” which describes that foundation as “incorporated over 13 years ago in the U.S. Virgin Islands on July 13, 2000” and names Epstein, Indyke and Erika Kellerhals as its trustees, lists “Edge Foundation, Inc. $75,000” among the not-for-profit entities supported “over the past three years.”18 The document does not break that figure into payments or give any date within the three years, and it may overlap the 2011 and 2014 entries rather than add to them.

On April 14, 2015 a correspondent whose name the production withholds sent Epstein what the covering message calls “the Foundation’s 2014 recipients,” a list of recipients and sums that includes “Edge Foundation, Inc. 50,000.00.”17 The sheet does not say which of his foundations the list belongs to.

August 2018: one promise, two charities, and a reconciliation

The August 2018 sequence is the most completely documented payment to the Foundation in the release, because every step of it is on a separate sheet.

On August 21, 2018, shortly after noon Eastern time, Groff wrote to Kahn and to Epstein, copying Bella Klein, under the subject “John Brockman”:

John Brockman received a check for $25,000. He says jeffrey had promised $60,000. John says he will hold on to the $25,000 and not deposit. He is hoping it was just an error.

30

Twenty-five minutes later Epstein replied to her in five words: “Tell him two different charities”.31 Groff forwarded that to Kahn with the single word “FYI”, and Kahn answered “thanks”.3233

Six days later, on August 27, Kahn wrote to Groff and Klein: “jee just instructed me to send brockman (edge foundation) 35,000 from Gratitude”, and asked that the cheque be processed and Brockman informed.34 Groff then wrote to Brockman: “Hello John… I wanted to let you know you will receive a check for $35,000 from “Gratitude” entity from Jeffrey…check will be cut today! Please advise what address is best to send to…”35 Brockman answered, “Send to the office please, below,” above his Edge Foundation signature block at 260 Fifth Avenue.22 On August 28 Klein wrote to him, “John, / Check will be mailed today.”36

Three days after that the arithmetic closes in Epstein’s own books. His valuation report as at August 31, 2018 lists, under cash activity in items over $50,000, a single line reading “Edge Foundation - Enhanced 25k & Gratitude 35k” against a figure of 60,000 shown as a deduction.19 A promise of $60,000 was met with two cheques of $25,000 and $35,000 drawn on two different charities, and Epstein’s own asset summary books both of them to one payee. The two vehicles named on that line are Enhanced Education and a “Gratitude” entity; the entity of that name in the release is Gratitude America, Ltd, and no sheet read here states that the two are the same body. Brockman’s own acknowledgement of receipt, eleven days later, is recorded on his page.37

On August 29 and 30, 2018, the day after the office said the second cheque would be posted and two days before the balance-sheet date on which the $60,000 was booked, Epstein sent the New York Times reporter Landon Thomas Jr. the address of the Foundation’s own dinner page. Those dates are set out here in order because a chronology is a chronology, and nothing cited on this page establishes any connection between the payment and the approach to the reporter. The exchange itself is described below.

The annual dinner

The dinner is the Foundation’s best-documented activity, and the documents that record it are invitations.

Brockman’s invitation of February 25, 2014 gives the event’s own history of its own names:

Please join Katinka Matson and myself for the sixteenth annual EDGE dinner. The “Dinner” actually began 29 years ago at a Mexican restaurant during the 1985 Comdex in Las Vegas as “The Millionaires’ Dinner” (branded by the WSJ in a front page article). It became an annual event beginning in 1998 with our first dinner in Monterey, and then, in 2010, we moved it to Long Beach. It’s been called “The Digerati Dinner”, “The Billionaires’ Dinner” (thanks to the WSJ again in 1999), “The EDGE Science Dinner”, “The Last Digerati Dinner”, and our favorite iteration, “The New Age of Wonder Dinner”, characterized by Freeman Dyson as the new era dominated by computational biology.

7

The same invitation sets the 2014 dinner for 7:30 in the evening on Monday, March 17, in Vancouver, with the place “To Be Announced” and an RSVP deadline of Monday, March 10, and closes: “Confidential, please. We will book a private room for a dinner limited to about 20 people. For this dinner, less is more, so please keep this invitation, which is for you only, under the radar, as well as our presence in Vancouver.”8

That invitation was sent as one email to a single addressee line naming twenty-five people, Epstein among them, each of whom was told the invitation was “for you only.” The addressee line is not reproduced on this page. A name on an invitation records that an invitation was sent and nothing else: not that the person accepted, not that the person attended, and not that the person knew who else had been asked. The same circular is produced repeatedly in the release, and a roster of names who did nothing is not a finding.

Four years later Brockman put a figure on the same dinner in a private note to Epstein: “An interesting ancillary benefit: The net worth of the 40 guests at my 2014 “billionaires dinner” was equal to combined wealth of 60% of all Americans.”38 Epstein’s reply was one word: “Ok.”38 The two statements do not agree with each other: the invitation limited the table to “about 20 people” and the note four years later counts forty guests. Neither figure is corroborated by any attendance record in the release.

Epstein’s invitations, acceptances and refusals

The release records Epstein being invited to the Foundation’s dinners repeatedly, and records what he said each time.

In 2014 he forwarded the invitation to Groff, who asked, “Do you wish me to RSVP with an “unfortunately no” reply?”39 Nine days later his office wrote to Brockman instead: “Hi John! Jeffrey would like to attend your dinner! He will come alone…Has the place for dinner announced as of yet!?”40 The next day another message from the office reported to a third party, “Jeffrey will be attending John Brockman’s dinner party in Vancouver March 17th…once John send more details I will pass along to you…”41 Three days after the dinner date Brockman wrote to Epstein under the subject “Edge dinner!” with nothing but a link to the Foundation’s page for that year.42

For 2015 Brockman wrote on February 28 under the subject “Confidential - The Annual Dinner,” inviting him to Vancouver on Wednesday, March 18.43 Epstein declined four minutes later: “how are you. I wont be there this year. = will be in santa fe, with chomsky and group”.44

For 2016 Brockman wrote on January 22, “Please join Katinka and myself for this year’s dinner in Vancouver, which marks the 20th anniversary of EDGE,” naming the Blue Water Cafe and its private dining room “The Oceans,” and repeating the confidentiality line.6 Epstein answered, “great thanks”.45 On February 9 Groff asked him, “Shall I RSVP YES for you?” and he answered, “Yes”; she then told Brockman, “Hello John…I wanted to let you know Jeffrey WILL attend your dinner! thank you!”4621 Brockman replied, “Excellent. When does he get in and where is he staying??”, and Groff answered that she was working on it.47

Epstein’s printed schedule for that week sets out the plan. It records TED in Vancouver from February 15 to 19 with a conference room at the Fairmont Waterfront “Booked under ENHANCED EDUCATION,” a dinner with Brockman and sixteen friends on February 16, and on Wednesday February 17 a “Pre Dinner Reception in your Conference Room” at 5:30 followed at 7:30 by “THE EDGE DINNER w/John Brockman & Katinka” at the Blue Water Cafe.4849 A schedule is a plan and not a record of attendance, and the surrounding entries for that week carry the same form.

Two messages from the same week show what the pre-dinner reception was for. On February 16 Epstein wrote to Joi Ito, “The cheakamus conference room is ours. Listed under enhanced education”.50 Ito’s reply ended, ” … we’re going to Brockman’s dinner right?”, and Epstein answered, “Yes and you can invite anyone smart to conference room for pre dinner snack= talk etc”; Ito’s answer was “Roger.”5152 The hotel room in which guests gathered before the Foundation’s dinner was booked in the name of Epstein’s charity, and he was inviting people into it.

What Epstein said about the dinner

On February 9, 2014 a correspondent asked him about it. Epstein’s first answer was that he did not know of it: “sorry, steve has no interest, in one off restaurants. I asked and thought i had responded, / dnt / know of any billionaire dinner , or are you refereing to ted conference”.53 She replied, “I was referring to the Edge ‘Billionaire’s dinner …sounds like your crowd”, with a link.54 Fourteen minutes after his first answer, he sent a second: “These dinenrs were at Ted , don’t you remember. i funded. … ”55

Within a quarter of an hour Epstein wrote that he knew of no such dinner and that he had funded it. This page does not resolve which statement is true. Both are quoted as printed, and the spellings “refereing” and “dinenrs” are the sheets’ own. No document read for this page records a payment described as being for a dinner; what the returns and ledgers record are contributions to the Foundation itself.

On November 15, 2016 he wrote to David Stern, “I met carlos salinas with john brockman at the billionaire dinner … ”56 The message continues into other matters, and the remainder of that thread is not reproduced here. The name as he printed it is not the name on the 2014 addressee line.

In August 2018 he offered the dinner to a reporter. Writing to Landon Thomas Jr. of the New York Times on August 15, he named the man he called “The real master of ceremonies” as “SAUL ( ricky ) Warman,” dated the occasion to “Ted conference in 1996,” listed seven technology figures whose names are not reproduced here, and continued: “later same evening- John Brockman s billionaire dinner. With all the above in one restaurant.” He added, “You might want to talk on background with either or both . I can arrange”.57 Thomas answered, “Wow. That is fucking it. Amazing. I knew it was Brockman. What a super cool story.”57 Epstein’s date conflicts with the Foundation’s own account, which puts the first annual dinner in Monterey in 1998, and no document read for this page records who attended any 1996 event.7 A second copy of his message prints the surname as “Wurman.”58

Two weeks later, on August 29, he sent Thomas the Foundation’s dinner page and nothing else.59 Thomas asked, “Are they still going on? The Edge dinners?” Epstein answered: “no. but more private now. but i thought you d like seeing all the players”.60 Thomas replied the next day: “I know — I went back to 1999. I am surprised no one has done a big piece on this; how these dinners launched so many influential brains. Should be a major part of your memoir:)“61

Brockman’s own difficulty with it

On January 3, 2012 Brockman wrote to Epstein about the event at length, and asked him for advice:

Don’t know what to do about the Billionaires’ Dinner. I like seeing this crowd, and this is the opportunity, but I find attending TED and being in Long Beach too painful.

62

He went on that “Anderson is now inviting lots and lots of my clients,” that “[m]ixing the academics up with the moguls doesn’t work … ” and that “Hence last year I had to do the dinner in absolute secret, which was a real strain since I have a business and its not a good idea to insult the people who make money for you. What to do? … Any feedback appreciated.”62 Epstein’s reply was: “im here in ny.. yes come to ted.. we can do lunches and dinners fuck Chris”.63

The dinner Brockman describes holding “in absolute secret” is the one for which he had circulated final details on February 28, 2011 in an email headed “Edge Dinner - Tuesday Night - Final Details,” whose body begins, “Re: the annual dinner Tuesday Night, EDGE doesn’t do SWAG (Stuff We All Get), but there are benefits!” and goes on to offer its addressees first access to a redesigned edge.org and the manuscript of a forthcoming book.64 Epstein was among its addressees; as with the 2014 circular, that line is not reproduced here.

Other recorded activities

The Annual Question. On November 6, 2009 Brockman told Epstein he had approached the deputy director for policy of the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, and enclosed his own letter of November 4, describing it as “proposing that President Obama ask this year’s EDGE question.”9 The letter itself reads: “I invite President Obama to ask this year’s question, toward the goal of renewing a national discussion to “restore science to its rightful place.""65 It describes the Foundation’s work in institutional terms: “In a similar fashion, EDGE, through its Master Classes, its dinners and special events, gathers together intellectuals and technology pioneers.” It lists the Annual Question, the Master Classes and “THE ANNUAL “BILLIONAIRES” DINNER[1998-2009]” among its programmes.65 Brockman closed, “Please give me a call to discuss,” and told Epstein, “I await his reply.”965 The sheet spells the official’s surname two ways. Whether he replied is not shown by the documents cited here.

Master Classes and special events. The same letter lists master classes in synthetic genomics, behavioural economics and thinking, held in Los Angeles, Sonoma and Rutherford between 2007 and 2009, and special events at Eastover Farm in 2001, 2002 and 2007.65 In July 2010 Brockman told Epstein of a forthcoming event, “The scientists and press. None of the usual Billionaires Dinner crowd. Just as well because this is the real deal science-wise … ” and named its speakers and the journalists who had confirmed.66

Smaller dinners. The Foundation also held dinners in London and New York, which Brockman distinguished from the annual one. Inviting Epstein to a London dinner in April 2014 he wrote, “We’re having our our annual EDGE London dinner on Tuesday night. It would be great if you could come. This is usually a fun dinner, in contrast to the better-known annual “Billionaires’ Dinner""; Epstein answered, “Unfortunatley cannot make it .”6768 A second London invitation followed in October 2017, in a message whose last paragraph also suggested that Epstein consider providing support for a book project and the meetings Brockman was convening for it; Epstein replied, “im always willing to support anything you think is fun”.6970 In May 2012 Brockman wrote, in a postscript, ” … that’s what we had at The EDGE dinner at II Buco last Thursday. It=was scintillating.” above a heading reading “EDGE DINNER @ IL BUCO - MAY 24, 2012.”11

The Foundation as a route of access

Two documents show the Foundation’s membership and its dinner being used to open doors.

In June 2011 Brockman sent a cold pitch to Gavin Andresen, whose work on Bitcoin the letter says he had been following, offering to represent a book, describing his literary agency and its clients, and mentioning that “Among our other activities is Edge Foundation, Inc, a nonprofit foundation, which publishes “Edge” … a website which, although not related to the business, is a good indicator of our network and range of interests.”, with links to the master classes and “the EDGE Annual “Billionaires” Dinner, which began, much more humbly as the “digerati” dinner at Comdex in 1985.”71 The letter ends with a postscript: “Finally, speaking of the billionaires at the EDGE dinner, Jeffrey Epstein, (“International Moneyman of Mystery”, NY Ma azine , has expressed an interest in talking to you about a business matter. You can email him, if interested, at … It’s probably worth doing so.”72 Brockman forwarded the pitch to Epstein the same day with the note, “This is the guy: / Gavin Andresen / No one has his number that I know. So, here’s my best shot (I mention you in the ps).”73

In March 2012 Brockman wrote to Ian Osborne: “Nice to see you at Jeffrey’s house last week. It occurs to me that =iven the various connections you might be interested in being part of =he very loosely affiliated Edge community which is run under my =onprofit Edge Foundation, Inc.” He offered a place on a private mailing list and added, “In addition, we run private Master =lassed … and the annual billionaires dinner … ”10 Osborne answered, “It was a pleasure to see you again at Jeffrey’s,” and, “Many thanks for the kind invitation. I would be delighted to be part of =he Edge community.”74 The membership was offered off the back of a meeting at Epstein’s house, and the dinner was named as one of its benefits.

What the documents do not show

  • Nothing about the Foundation’s own affairs. No certificate of incorporation, no state of incorporation, no employer identification number, no Form 990, no balance sheet, no bank account, no officer other than its president, and no board.20
  • No payment tied to a dinner. Every recorded sum is a contribution to the Foundation, and the four tax-return entries that carry a purpose column are expressly unrestricted. No document read here earmarks money for a dinner, a venue or a guest.1415
  • No record of anyone attending anything. The release carries invitations, acceptances, refusals, a schedule and a photograph gallery reproduced from the Foundation’s own website. It carries no attendance list, no signed register and no bill. Whether Epstein was present at any Edge dinner is not established by the documents cited here, and his office’s “Jeffrey WILL attend your dinner” is a statement of intention made eight days beforehand.21
  • No corroboration of “i funded.” Epstein wrote in February 2014 that he had funded the dinners. The returns and ledgers show him funding the Foundation. No document read here connects the two, and no document read here contradicts him either.55
  • No receipts from anyone else. Every payment to the Foundation in the documents cited here comes from an Epstein vehicle. That is a fact about this release, which is a production of Epstein’s papers, and not a fact about the Foundation’s funding.
  • No acknowledgement, agreement or bank record. No gift acknowledgement, grant agreement, cancelled cheque, wire confirmation or bank statement naming the Foundation is among the documents cited here.20
  • What became of it. No document read here records the Foundation being dissolved, ceasing to publish, or ending the dinner. The last word on the dinner in the release is Epstein’s: “more private now.”60

The leading ellipsis marks a cut: the sentence begins “I want the real thing a=d”. “It=was” and “II Buco” are the sheet’s renderings of “It was” and “Il Buco” and are reproduced as printed. 68. The standalone copy of the same invitation, which renders “contrast” with a character lost. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA02712678 p.1. ↩ ↩2

  69. Email, John Brockman to Jeffrey Epstein, copied to Lesley Groff, September 30, 2017, subject “check in, please - Edge London dinner,” inviting him to The Red Fort on Thursday October 5 and, in a later paragraph, suggesting he consider providing support for a book project and its meetings. That sentence is not quoted because both produced copies lose a character inside it, one in “think” and the other in “providing.” The sheet carries heavy transmission damage and also reports a family bereavement, which is not reproduced here. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA02365431 p.1. ↩ ↩2

  70. Email, Jeffrey Epstein to John Brockman, September 30, 2017, 7:26 PM, body quoted here in full; the trailing markup on the sheet is not reproduced. The support he answers is the book project named in the preceding message and not the dinner. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA02591321 p.1. ↩ ↩2

  71. Email, John Brockman to Gavin Andresen, June 11, 2011, as forwarded to Epstein the same day. The quoted sentence is from the paragraph describing the Foundation; the client list that follows it is not reproduced here. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00629471 p.1. ↩

  72. The same letter, continuation sheet, postscript, quoted here in full. The spaced ellipsis stands where an email address is barred on the sheet. “NY Ma azine ,” with no closing parenthesis before the comma, is the sheet’s rendering and is reproduced as printed. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00629471 p.2. ↩ ↩2

  73. The covering note to Epstein at the head of the same run, quoted here in full. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00629471 p.1. ↩

  74. Email, Ian Osborne to John Brockman, copied to Jeffrey Epstein, March 21, 2012, 17:57, quoted as printed; one value in the first sentence is barred on the sheet and the clause containing it is not reproduced. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA02551254 p.1. ↩
