Meetings at 9 East 71st StreetBooked repeatedly from 2015 to 2019. A booking is not an attendance. One sheet records an arrival: on June 16, 2017 Lesley Groff wrote to Epstein under the subject “Nick Ribis is here!”13
Findings of wrongdoing recorded hereNone. No document cited on this page records any court finding against him14

Nicholas L. Ribis is an American casino and gaming executive who corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein from at least 2007 until the summer of 2019. No roster, guest list or flight manifest in this release names him, so far as this page has found. He writes, and he is written to: he pitches transactions, asks for introductions, reports on meetings he has attended, forwards political news, borrows money and is chased for its repayment.

This page sets out four things the documents support: that Epstein referred him to a bank as a prospective client in January 2007; that between 2010 and 2016 he went to Epstein repeatedly for a route to Leon Black, and that on one occasion the whole of that route survives in the files and ends in a refusal; that in December 2016 Epstein lent money to a company of his, that the loan went wrong, and that the paper of it runs from a bank compliance file to a dishonoured cheque to a clause in Epstein’s own trust; and that from 2017 he was one of the correspondents to whom Epstein talked about Donald Trump.

One of those strands is already set out elsewhere on this wiki and is not repeated here. The March 2016 introduction Epstein made between Ribis and Marc Rowan, including Epstein’s own caveat about it, is on Rowan’s page. Ribis’s October 2017 message about Colony and the Weinstein Company is on Harvey Weinstein. His March 2018 message naming “Ivanka and Jar=ed” is on Ivanka Trump. Each is cited below only where the sequence needs it.

Who he is, in his own signature blocks

The correspondence dates his employers without any outside source. From February 2010 to late 2011 his messages close with a confidentiality notice reading “This message is being sent by Resorts International Casinos.”1 In April 2012 the same notice reads “This message is being sent by Atlantic Club Casino Hotel.”5 From late 2012 it reads “Resorts International Management.”6 From 2015 the block reads “Nicholas Ribis / President/CEO / NLR Ventures” above a New Jersey business address, and the notice reads “This message is being sent by NLR Ventures.”7 By 2017 the footer on his messages names no company at all: it reads “This message is being sent by Nicholas L Ribis.”4

Two documents in the release describe his career rather than carrying it. A 2007 e-mail inside JPMorgan, quoted in a federal filing, calls him “principal in Colony Capital, $6billion [sic] private equity fund, specializing in ownership of casinos (Resorts Int’l,etc. [sic])”.2 A 2019 Deutsche Bank presentation to federal prosecutors names him as a former president and chief executive of Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc.1415 Both are other people’s descriptions of him, written for other purposes, and this page carries them as that.

Every hit on the surname in this release is this man. No other Ribis appears in the correspondence, under any forename, and no document cited here suggests a second one. The only class of document that names him outside the correspondence is a set of bulk Palm Beach County property records held in the congressional production. This page does not use them and does not cite them: they are machine dumps of whole assessment tables rather than sheets, nothing on them can be checked at a page image, and what they carry about him is a private residence held with a co-owner. No address, parcel reference or assessed value from them is printed here, and the co-owner is not named.

January 2007: the referral

The earliest document naming Ribis is a memorandum inside JPMorgan’s private bank, produced in the U.S. Virgin Islands’ suit against the bank and quoted in a statement of facts filed by the Government of the United States Virgin Islands. Dated January 9, 2007, under the heading “Special Situations”, it reads:

As to Jeff Epstein related initiatives, again you can give verbal update in view of recent telephone conversations you have had with Jes and Mary and I with Jeff. Also, as you know, earlier today, Jeff called me to say he has asked two potential new clients in 200M range (Nick Ribis and Ben Jacobson) to call me directly.

That is the whole of the entry.8 Two days later, according to the same filing, a banker called Barry Berger e-mailed a colleague under the subject “Jeffrey E. referrals!” and reported the call: “just got call from one of Jeff’s referrals, Nick Ribis … (he is principal in Colony Capital, $6billion [sic] private equity fund, specializing in ownership of casinos (Resorts Int’l,etc. [sic]))… . He also thought unnecessary to invite Jeffrey, but I will call Jeff and let him know Nick called me… .”2 The bracketed “[sic]” and the spaced ellipses are the filing’s own.

In every commercial sequence set out below, and across the twelve years they span, what Epstein supplies is an introduction.

2010 to 2014: Harrah’s, Caesars, and a route to Leon Black

The first document in Epstein’s own files to name Ribis is an office note sent late on February 12, 2010, listing the next day’s callers: “Joey P. will come tomorrow around 11am, Nick Ribis at 11:30am Tommy and Jonathan Farkas are coming at 4pm. Steve Hanson isn’t sure yet if he can make 4pm, but will call in the morning.”9 Eleven days later Ribis sent Epstein a “Resorts Summary” and offered “a complete Due Diligence Package if u need”.16

On March 29, 2010 he forwarded an analyst report with a line that fixes the relationship early:

Jeffrey – here’s a new analyst reports on Harrahs’— ur pal Leon is in a dream world – hope ur ok – btw nothing from Russia — Nick

The message carries no terminal mark.1 “ur pal Leon” puts the man on Epstein’s side of the acquaintance rather than Ribis’s. This page does not identify him. Epstein’s own instruction of February 2012 names Leon Black, but nothing read here establishes that the Leon of this 2010 message is the same man.17

In July 2011 Epstein wrote a single line, “loved the gay club idea”, and Ribis answered: “Not mine I’m outta Resorts honestly nothing works in AC -I don’t think the silver hair crowd will like - I think its limiting failed in LV”.18

The clearest single sequence in the whole correspondence runs three weeks in early 2012, and it can be followed end to end. On February 13, 2012 Ribis sent Epstein a structured proposal:

Jeffrey – recent public reports indicated that Caesars intends to auction 10 or more of their smaller regional casinos to focus on larger jurisdiction casinos, foreign properties and substantial debt reduction – my idea is to have Caesars spin off the properties to a company controlled by me for a higher purchase price by allocating a substantial amount of Caesar current debt( thereby reducing Caesars overall debt load ) and having a higher multiple on ebitda from those casinos than Caesars would achieve in an auction process – this would allow Caesars to quickly announce a sale of these properties at a very high price to a licensed entity without having licensing or financial outs in contract to sell the properties—I thought this was an interesting idea for Leon what do u think – call me — Nick

That message also carries no terminal mark.19 Read past the commercial language and the operative claim is a regulatory one: that a company he controlled would be a “licensed entity”, so a buyer could sign without “licensing or financial outs”. That is his own assertion about his own standing, made to sell a transaction. Casino ownership is licensed everywhere it exists and nothing follows from the existence of a licence.

That evening Epstein forwarded it to his assistant with the words “Remind me with Leon”. The next morning she returned it to him under the subject line “Speak to LEon about this!” Eleven days later, on February 24, he sent it back to her with an instruction: “forward to leon black,, with an note that says any interest??”17 The same afternoon a message went out to a correspondent addressed as “Melanie”: “Melanie, can you please forward or print the below for leon and ask if he has any interest? Jeffrey is wondering and would like to know! Thanks,”. The sheet bars the writer’s name and the signature beneath it, and neither is supplied here.20

On March 2 Epstein told Ribis “leon has been traveling and will be back monday”; Ribis replied the next morning, “I’m around all day thanks for getting back to me not calling about Leon new stuff”.21 And on the evening of March 6, 2012, Epstein sent one line, exactly as the sheet prints it, with no capital and no full stop:

leon said no interest

22

Three weeks passed between the proposal and the answer, and it moved through two intermediaries on the way. Nothing cited here shows that Black saw it. What the documents show is that Epstein twice directed that it be put to him, and then reported a refusal.

The same years carry the rest of Ribis’s book. In January 2013: “Jeffrey - do u know David Tepper? I do I am close to deal with him - can we talk - Nick”.23 In July 2014 Epstein asked him, “what do you know about the revel. where and how are your?”24

December 2015 and 2016: Caesars again

Caesars Entertainment Operating Company filed for Chapter 11 protection in January 2015. In December 2015 Ribis came back to Epstein on the same subject and, for the first time, offered himself as an adviser rather than a buyer. Epstein proposed a meeting for the following morning, “tomoroow 11 my house?”; Ribis asked “Ok — address”; Epstein answered “9 east 71 st”.25 The next day Ribis wrote:

Jeffrey - thanks - for Leon I think what I can add is a new look at work out theory, asset sales, and dealing with 2nd lien holders like David Tepper ( who I know ) - also with my workout experience and success I can take a fresh look at situation and advise him - certainly he needs it the way things have gone since the company’s Ch 11 filing - Nick

No terminal mark.26 Later the same day he added: “Jeffrey - I did some digging on Caesars I will call u in AM -Nick”.25 The documents give the first name “Leon” and nothing more, and this page does not identify him from them; what it can say is that Ribis had used the same first name for Black since 2010 in the same commercial context.1

Through 2016 the pattern continues and the subject narrows to Apollo. On April 11 Ribis wrote “Spoke to Marc seemed to go ok”, and on April 13, “Sent email to Marc waiting for response”.2728 The introduction those messages report on was made by Epstein the previous month and is set out, with Epstein’s caveat about it, on Marc Rowan. On May 6 Ribis reported, “Meeting went well yesterday”.7 That message names nobody and does not place Epstein at the meeting; the writer is Ribis, reporting on his own attendance to a man who was not there.

On May 12, 2016 Epstein sent a one-word message, “delicate”, and Ribis answered, “Agree very delicate maybe it’s best left between us”.29 Nothing cited here shows what the conversation was about. On September 6, Ribis asked, “Anything new from discussion with L ?” and Epstein replied “not yet tonite”.30

The loan, 2016 to 2019

On December 8, 2016 Epstein sent an outgoing wire of $75,000 to NLR Ventures LLC at TD Bank. Seven weeks later Deutsche Bank’s anti-money-laundering unit picked the transaction for review and asked what it was. The answer came back on January 31, 2017 from an assistant vice president at Deutsche Bank Trust Company Americas, in the form the enquiry had used:

  1. What is the purpose of the Outgoing wire to NLR VENTURES LLC?

This is a personal loan from Mr Epstein to Nick Ribis

  1. What is the Beneficiary NLR VENTURES LLC's line of business? Nick Ribis is in the hotel/entertainment business

  2. What is the relationship between the client and the Beneficiary NLR VENTURES LLC? Nick Ribis is a personal friend of Mr. Epstein.

11

Thirteen months later the same unit asked about money going the other way, and got a different answer to the same question about the same man. On February 6, 2018, asked to explain an incoming wire of $50,000 from NLR Resorts International LLC, the same officer answered: “1. Please explain the purpose of this Incoming Wire. REPAYMENT OF LOAN”; “2. Please explain the relationship between the Client and Counterparty. FRIENDS”; “3. Please explain the business activities of the Counterparty. LEGAL”.31 In January 2017 the bank was told he was in the hotel and entertainment business. In February 2018 it was told his business activities were legal work. Nothing cited here reconciles the two.

Between those two answers the loan went bad, and it is documented almost day by day.

On June 24, 2017 Epstein wrote to Ribis and to his accountant Richard Kahn together: “When you get s chance please deliver to rich the 200k of jewelry and the paintings to be returned on payment . Glad it worked for you”.32 On July 11 Kahn pressed for “timing for jewelry delivery today along with list detailing what will be delivered” under the subject line “Promissory Note”; Ribis answered, “I have jewelry it will be delivered tomorrow”.33 On August 7 Epstein wrote to Ribis: “news? rich is drying me crazy. I h=ve told him a story a day. . we need to be p=rfect”. The ”=” characters are quoted-printable damage printed on the sheet, where a single character has been replaced.34 On October 29 Epstein wrote to Kahn and Ribis together, “rich, lay off of nick. he said he will be able to pay back at the end of two weeks. . thnx”; Ribis replied, “Thank u my friend-talk in AM - hope ur feeling better”.3536

On December 20, 2017 Ribis wrote four words, “50 k wire today”.37 Epstein asked, “and i assume the balance before the end of year as promised ? yes ?”; Ribis answered “Yes working on it”; and Epstein wrote back a line whose second half is not explained anywhere in the release:

thkx . we are filling out our regulatory reports this fri. and leaving you off .

Kahn confirmed receipt the same afternoon: “wire just received in the amount of 50,000”, above a bank notice reading “12/20/2017 01:06 PM (ET) INCOMING MONEY TRANSFER $50,000.00”.38 Nothing in the release says what reports Epstein meant, which body they were for, or what being “left off” one would have consisted of. The sentence is quoted because it was written, and it is not interpreted here.

Wires were promised again on January 16, 2018 (“Wire will be sent to u today - thank u”), chased on January 17 (“Did u get wire?”), promised again on January 22 (“Wire tomorrow”) and again on January 23, when Ribis wrote that his assistant was at the bank sending it.394041

On January 31, 2018 Ribis wrote a cheque. It is in the release as a photograph: a TD Bank cheque numbered 1148, the maker’s printed name “NICHOLAS RIBIS”, dated 1/31/18, payable to “Jeffrey Epstein”, for “One hundred fifty eight thousand twenty five 02/100 DOLLARS”, figured “$158,025.02”, signed in ink.42 The text layer of that sheet transcribes the payee line as “NICHOLAS RIBIS” and so reverses the direction of the payment; the image does not.

On April 3 Epstein wrote: “sorry , nick , we had on the calendar a full r=payment by march 31. . I have not bothered=C2 . status?” The “r=payment” and the “=C2” are quoted-printable damage printed on the sheet.43 On April 18 Kahn sent “wiring instructions along with calculation of amount due: 137,072.70”; on April 24 he wrote, “Nick as you know we have to deposit your check before the end of the month. I hopethat is not a problem.”, and Ribis answered, “Please do not deposit. I will talk to Jeffrey”.44 He asked Kahn not to deposit it again on June 8 and again on June 28.45

On July 6, 2018 a dishonoured-items listing was generated. Its heading reads “DISHONORED ITEMS LISTING, CHECKS CASHED/DEPOSITED - RETURNED UNPAID”, it prints a code table whose fifth entry is “5 - Payment Stopped”, and its single data row names JEFFREY EPSTEIN and NICHOLAS RIBIS, carries the figure 5 and the amount 158025.02, and runs on to “Check #1148”.46 The sheet is a flat rendering of a spreadsheet and carries no column rules, so this page does not assert which column the figure 5 occupies. The same day Epstein wrote to Ribis, “the bank said that you put a stop payment on the check, ?/ when?”; Ribis answered, “What no I will check”; and that evening Epstein wrote to Kahn: “ribis said the bank called them and his sec said stop it.=C2◆ . one more story”. The “=C2” and the diamond are printed on the sheet.474849

On July 24, 2018 Epstein wrote “office did not receive check” and Ribis replied, ”> It was fedexed I will check”.50 Nothing cited here shows that the debt was ever settled.

Six months later Epstein provided for it to be forgiven on his death. The Amended and Restated Jeffrey E. Epstein 2019 Trust, dated February 4, 2019, contains within the article headed “After My Death” a clause reading “I forgive any loans which I made to the following individuals or entities:”, followed by a lettered list. One of the entries reads “NLR VENTURES, LLC”.51 The same clause and the same entry stand in The 1953 Trust, made as of August 8, 2019, two days before Epstein died.52 Nothing is taken from the other entries in either list; they are not reproduced, not counted and not described.

Meetings at the house

Epstein’s office booked Ribis into 9 East 71st Street repeatedly. A booking is not an attendance, and most of what survives is booking: a May 2016 sequence in which Groff offered noon, then 12:30, then gave the address, and Ribis wrote “Running 15 late should we do by phone”; a September 2016 note asking “Reminder Nick Ribis is asking if he could come see you at 12:30 today. Shall we schedule in?”, to which Epstein replied “yes”; a May 2017 confirmation that “Nick Ribis is confirmed to come see you 12:30-1pm on Tuesday May 30th.”535455

One sheet is different. At 2:54 p.m. UTC on Friday June 16, 2017, which is 10:53 a.m. in New York on the sheet’s own property-list timestamp, Groff wrote to Epstein under the subject line “Nick Ribis is here!” and the body read: “Nick Ribis is here…he is aware you won’t be here until =round 11:15am”.13 That is a record of Ribis in the building, and of Epstein not yet being in it.

The February 2019 sequence is the fullest. Groff’s schedule for Thursday February 14, 2019 opens “11:00am Appt w/Nick Ribis”.56 At 7:58 a.m. she wrote, “Good morning Nick. Reconfirming you will come see Jeffrey today at 11am at his home: 9 East 71st Street between 5th and Madison. Thank you! Lesley”; Ribis answered “Ok” at 8:45; at 10:49 he wrote, “I may be a few minutes late traffic”, and the office answered “ok, I will let Jeffrey know”.5758 That evening Ribis wrote “Thank u”, and Epstein wrote back “always”.5960 The lateness message places him travelling and the thank-you closes the day; neither states in terms that the meeting happened.

Donald Trump

From 2017 Ribis is one of the correspondents with whom Epstein discusses Trump, and the traffic runs both ways.

Epstein asked him a direct question about his own standing with Trump. On the evening of Friday June 2, 2017 he wrote:

Nick , Donald has recently said that I betrayed him 15 years ago , he =aid there was a lawsuit that he asked me to get involved and help and I re=used . Do you have any insight ??

The ”=” characters are quoted-printable damage on the sheet, replacing one letter each in “said” and “refused”.61 Six days earlier Epstein had written “getting hotter” and Ribis had answered, “Wow I wonder what Jarred did u know DJT knew!”62 Nothing cited here records an answer to the question about the lawsuit.

Epstein described Ribis to Steve Bannon in terms of that relationship. On February 28, 2018, in a thread in which Bannon had just written that he had been “pulled into a meeting in the city”, Epstein wrote, unprompted:

Nick Ribis loyal , lawyer . Knows Donald 25 years , and shares kasowitz Expertise-

Bannon answered with two words, “What firm”. Epstein’s next message does not answer it.12 That is Epstein’s characterisation of Ribis, offered to a third party. No other statement of how long the two men had known each other was found in the name forms searched for this page.

Ribis’s own side of the traffic is a stream of political read-outs, most of them one line. “I think DJT has big issues” (November 24, 2017).63 “He is going crazy!!” (January 4, 2018), sent the same day he forwarded a trade-press piece on Michael Wolff’s book about the White House.6465 “It is -”, agreeing with Epstein’s observation that “brillaint the way the russia news took the air out of the =tormy news” (April 1, 2018).66 “Looks like Mick Mulvaney is out before he starts - knew it after his comments about DJT came public-”, to which Epstein answered “i have not seen , is he out?” and Ribis came back, “Not yet but DJT not speaking to him with family that’s why I cannt talk” (December 23, 2018).67

On February 15, 2019 the exchange is longer and Ribis claims personal knowledge. At 10:55 a.m. he wrote: “Watching him at his announcement on his emergency declaration he Looks and sounds totally unhinged and incoherent- I know him something is up”. Epstein answered “agree 100%”. Ribis: “Very troubled -”. Epstein: “Panic”. Ribis: “Yup - Barr must have told him something”.68 “I know him something is up” is Ribis’s claim about himself, made to one correspondent, and no document cited here corroborates it.

In March 2019 he forwarded a New York Times report on a state attorney general’s inquiry into Trump projects with the line “This is the start of big problem for him!”69 Epstein sent traffic the other way as well, including reports on the Trump Organization’s bank lending in February and March 2019.70 In August 2018 Ribis forwarded a gossip site’s report about Trump with the words “In Europe saw this it will drive him crazy!!”; that headline is not reproduced here, by editorial choice, and nothing else is taken from the message.71

June 1, 2019: two lines, twice, inside three minutes

The last dated exchange between the two men in this release runs for eleven minutes on a Saturday evening, five weeks before Epstein’s arrest, and it is worth setting out to the second because a second document overlaps it.

At 6:46 p.m. in New York Epstein sent Ribis a link to a report that the White House counsel Emmet Flood was leaving. At 6:53:32 p.m. Ribis answered: “They r all jumping ship - its totally crazy - it’s time to worry”. At 6:55 p.m. Epstein wrote back one word, “yup”. At 6:57:12 p.m. Ribis wrote: “I hear Kelly Ann Conway next”.7210

A device extraction in Epstein’s own files carries a message thread with Steve Bannon running across the same evening, stamped in UTC. Epstein had sent Bannon the same link at 2:33 p.m. New York time, just over four hours before he sent it to Ribis. Then, at 6:55:55 p.m., he wrote to Bannon: “My guys saying rats jumping ship”. At 6:57:35 p.m. he wrote: “Kelly Anne next?” Bannon answered at 7:47:51 p.m., “She has nowhere to go”.73

The two lines Epstein sent Bannon are the two lines Ribis had just sent him, in the same order, two minutes and twenty-three seconds and then twenty-three seconds after Ribis sent them. Nothing on either sheet says who “My guys” were. What the sequence does establish is the traffic pattern: Epstein took political read-outs from Ribis and passed them on the same minute, unattributed and in the plural.

The Deutsche Bank presentation, September 2019

On September 12, 2019, a month after Epstein’s death, Deutsche Bank presented to the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York a deck breaking down his accounts. The exhibit headed “EXHIBIT Q: POTENTIALLY NOTABLE PAYMENTS” opens three sheets earlier; on the fourth of its sheets it carries a row for NLR Resorts International, LLC, which reads in full:

In a 2018 court filing, Nicholas L. Ribis is identified as the principal of NLR Resorts International LLC.53 That lawsuit is ongoing and contains allegations that Ribis perpetrated a $2.5 million fraud on the plaintiff, Churchill Downs, Inc. Ribis has connections to the Trump Organization.

The row’s next sentence begins on that sheet and is completed on the one after it, which is not quoted here; between them the two sheets name him as a former president and chief executive of Trump Entertainment Resorts, Inc. The footnote marker on the first sheet reads “See Churchill Downs, Inc. v. NLR Entertainment, LLC, 2:14-cv-03342 (D.N.J. Sept. 25, 2018), ECF No. 95.” The row records one payment of $125,000 to that company at TD Bank from an Epstein account, and an adjacent row records one payment of $75,000 to NLR Ventures LLC.1415

Three things about that passage, and they matter more than it does. It is a bank’s own summary of allegations in a civil pleading, written for prosecutors; it is not a finding, and this page has not read the pleading it cites. The filing it names is a civil action, and a civil complaint is an assertion by a plaintiff. No document cited anywhere on this page records any court finding of wrongdoing against Nicholas Ribis, and none is asserted here. The $75,000 figure in the adjacent row is the same wire Deutsche Bank’s own compliance unit had been told in January 2017 was “a personal loan from Mr Epstein to Nick Ribis”.11

What the documents do not show

  • They do not show that Ribis knew anything about Epstein’s offending. Nothing cited on this page records him being told about it, asking about it, or acting on it.
  • They do not show any finding against him. The only allegation in the release is a bank’s one-sentence summary of a civil pleading, and this page has not seen the pleading.
  • They do not establish what “we are filling out our regulatory reports this fri. and leaving you off .” refers to. No document names the reports, the body, or the consequence.
  • They do not show that Leon Black ever saw the February 2012 proposal, only that Epstein twice instructed that it be put in front of him and later reported a refusal.
  • They do not identify “Leon” in the December 2015 message, and do not identify “Marc” in the April 2016 messages; the page names neither from those sheets.
  • They do not show the loan being repaid. The last document on it is a chase in July 2018 and the next is a clause forgiving it in February 2019.
  • They do not show what the May 2016 “delicate” exchange was about, or what the September 2016 “discussion with L” was.
  • They do not establish attendance at most of the meetings booked, only that the office booked them. Two sheets go further: an arrival note in June 2017 and a lateness message in February 2019.
  • They contain no roster, guest list, flight manifest or telephone directory entry naming him that this page has found.
  • They do not resolve the two accounts Epstein’s side gave Deutsche Bank of what business Ribis was in.

What this page withholds, and why

This page prints no telephone number, no e-mail address, no home address and no bank account or routing number from any document cited on it, whatever the state of the sheet it appears on. It does not print the dial-in credentials carried by the office’s 2019 conference-call notes. It does not print the headline of the August 2018 article Ribis forwarded, which is an editorial choice and not a necessity. The Deutsche Bank officer who answered the two compliance inquiries is named on both sheets and is not named here, by the same choice: she is a salaried bank employee and her name adds nothing to the account.

Two dates on this page are matters of public record and are sourced to no document cited here: Epstein was arrested on July 6, 2019 and died on August 10, 2019. Everything else on this page is sourced.

Three financial figures are printed here and the distinction is deliberate. The amount of a wire, the amount due on a schedule, and the face of a dishonoured cheque are the substance of the instruments quoted, and a reader cannot check the account of the loan without them. The bank identifiers that travel beside them are not the substance of anything and are not printed, and their contents are not characterised.

One document is described without being quoted or cited. In March 2011 Epstein wrote to Ribis about press coverage of an accuser and about how Donald Trump might respond to an approach. That message concerns a complainant. Nothing is taken from it beyond the fact that it was sent to Ribis and that it names Donald; it is not quoted, and its identifier is not printed: a withholding that hands the reader the route back to it has withheld nothing. That is the treatment this desk has given the same class of document before, and it is given here for the same reason.

A note on the shape of the footprint

The release holds the same message many times over under different numbers, so a count of documents would not be a count of messages, and this page publishes no count.

What can be said, and is a judgement of the writer’s rather than a measurement, comes from reading forty documents drawn at random across the whole run and sorting them into four buckets. Nineteen were written by Ribis. Nine were addressed to him by Epstein. Eleven named him in somebody else’s prose, almost all of it Epstein’s office arranging or reporting his movements. One was a financial instrument bearing his name. None was a roster or a list of names. A reader who samples differently may sort differently, and the buckets are printed so that they can.
