Named on the documents asMichael Baden, Dr. Baden, Dr Baden, the inverted agency form Dr. Baden Michael, and, in the Chief Medical Examiner’s own internal case notes, the damaged Dr. Mchael Baden. ⚠ Michael M. Baden and M. Baden return nothing in this release. The middle-initial form is not used here1
⛔ The bare surname is not himOf 158 sheets in this release carrying the token baden, the desk’s triage classified 68 — 43% — as this man. The largest single bearer of the rest is a court reporter of the same surname whose per-sheet certification line repeats 21 times down one transcript; a lawyer surnamed Boden whom the extraction renders “Baden” accounts for about as many again; the remainder are German and Austrian place names, other people, and misreadings. ⛔ No figure on this page is taken from a bare-surname search1
⛔ Nothing in this release was written by himdocuments.sender matching baden returns 0 rows. There is no report, affidavit, declaration or sworn statement of his anywhere in it. Every opinion attributed to him on this page reaches the record through a press account, a press digest, or somebody else’s paraphrase, and is written here as such2
⭐ Who arranged it, in the government’s own words11 August 2019, 03:40 UTC. A Southern District of New York prosecutor to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner: As discussed, defense counsel has arranged for an individual to join the autopsy; his name is Michael Baden. He is confirmed for 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.3
⭐ Who paid is not establishedEight documents in this release say who engaged him, and they give four different principals — defence counsel, the brother, those representing the decedent, and the family. ⛔ No engagement letter, retainer, invoice or fee record appears anywhere in the set. The contemporaneous primaries name counsel; the earliest press account names the attorneys; hired by Jeffrey Epstein's brother enters the record 80 days later. Who paid him is a question this release does not answer4356789
⭐ He was swabbed before he was let in11 August 2019. OCME internal case notes: DNA swabs collected on 08/11/19 from autopsy observer, Dr. Michael Baden. submitted to OCME HR for processing. A second note the same morning: he presented to our office with the Decedent's brother to watch the autopsy. He was given an observer form to complete and wet swabbed before he went to observe the autopsy5
⭐ On autopsy day the ligature had not been examined11 August 2019, evening. A supplemental note in the OCME case file records a request to a detective for the decedent’s clothing and a full investigation, and then: I told him that the ligature is at OCME. but is at the DNA building and it veil not be brought to me until tomorrow. so I have not examined it yet. ⚠ veil is the extraction’s rendering and is not mended here5
⭐⭐ The question was asked, and it was answered30 October 2019, hours after his broadcast. An internal FBI message log: ADIC getting questions as expected after the Fox interview. Did we test the ligature for DNA? — and three minutes later, on the same sheet on the same clock: No. The only people that had access to Epstein were the guards. They for sure touched the noose. so no need to have it tested. and then Additionally, BOP did not secure it prior to us taking custody, s0 we dis not know who all touched it. ⚠ The desk’s own triage recorded that no document in this set answers that question. It is answered, twice, on the sheet below the question10
⭐ The fracture was in the record on day one11 August 2019, 14:55. A joint NYPD/FBI task-force summary circulated the same afternoon lists Ligature marks around the neck, petechia hemorrhage in the eyes, fractured hyoid bone-All the injuries noted are consistent with the circumstances surrounding the death. ➡ The hyoid fracture he discussed publicly in October was recorded on autopsy day — and characterised there as consistent with the manner of death. The dispute in this release is over the reading of findings, not over whether they existed79
⭐ The sharper challenge is not hisUndated DOJ OIG interview. The Inspector General put to an OCME witness that she actually moved forward and made a determination anyway as suicide without the correctional officer’s information. Her answer records a refusal: I wanted to go and see the cell. They wouldn't allow that. And, two sheets on, about the item she was given: was this thing that they gave me the actual ligature? So, I still don't think we really know that, or at least I'm not as convinced as I would like to be.11
The official finding stands30 October 2019. The Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Barbara Sampson, in a written statement: Our investigation concluded that the cause of Mr. Epstein's death was hanging and the manner of death was suicide. We stand by that determination... The original medical investigation was thorough and complete. There is no reason for a second medical investigation by our office. Nothing in this release shows that position changing129

What the record does not containAny document authored by him; any engagement letter, retainer, invoice or fee record; any announcement by OCME of the suicide determination itself; any record of what access he had during the examination, how long he was present, or what he was shown; any DNA result on the ligature; and any document dated between 21 August and 30 October 2019 in the whole of his file2

Michael Baden is a forensic pathologist, described in a 2011 New York Times article inside this release as a former New York City medical examiner, who on 11 August 2019 observed the Office of Chief Medical Examiner’s autopsy of Jeffrey Epstein as a privately retained observer, and who on 30 October 2019 said publicly that the autopsy findings were more consistent with homicidal strangulation than with suicide.149

⛔ This page settles nothing about how Jeffrey Epstein died, and it does not try. A contested cause of death is the exact place where a desk invents a conclusion. What this release can establish is who asked for what, on which day, in whose words, and what each institution said afterwards. It cannot establish whether the determination was right, and it cannot establish who paid the man who disputed it. Both are written below as questions and are left as questions.

⛔⛔ The single most important constraint on reading this page: there is not one document in this release that he wrote. No report, no affidavit, no declaration, no sworn statement, no letter. documents.sender matching baden returns 0 rows. Everything he is said to have concluded reaches this record as a press account of a television interview, or as a government reader’s summary of a press account. ⚠ So every sentence below that touches his opinion names who said it. Where this page says a press digest reported that he said, that is not hedging; it is the whole of what the record carries.

⛔ And the premise this page was commissioned on does not survive its own documents. The familiar formulation is that he was hired by Epstein’s brother. That phrasing is in this release — in press copy, dated 30 October 2019, eighty days after the autopsy. The contemporaneous primaries say something else, the earliest press account in this release says something else, and eight documents between them give four different principals. The sequence is set out below and is left to stand.

The name, and why a surname search cannot be used

The full-name phrase is clean and the bare surname is not. Measured for this page against the full-text index of this release, with invented controls, counts in sheets and documents:

form of the namesheetsdocuments
"michael baden"3932
"dr. baden"1716
"dr baden"1716 — ⚠ identical to the row above, not additive; the tokenizer discards the full stop
"baden michael" (the inverted agency form)55
"baden, michael"55 — ⚠ identical to the row above; the tokenizer discards the comma. It is not a surname-first index form
"michael m. baden"00
"m. baden"00
union of the three distinct attributable phrase forms5041
bare token baden158105
invented controls zzqbaden, "michael zzqbaden", "zzqmichael baden"00

➡ 50 sheets across 41 documents name him in a phrase that cannot be anyone else. That figure is measured here and it is certain on its own terms. ⚠ The desk’s triage of this subject went further, classifying every one of the 158 bare-surname sheets by hand and putting his union floor at 68 sheets across 48 documents. That classification is inherited on this page and was not re-derived sheet by sheet; the 18 additional sheets and 7 additional documents it adds are not load-bearing for anything written here.1

⛔ Why the bare surname is unusable, in one figure: it is only 43% him. Two other bearers each account for about 21 of the 158 sheets. One is a court reporter of the same surname, whose certification line repeats once per sheet down a single transcript — ⛔ that transcript is a deposition in survivors’ proceedings, it is not cited on this page, and its identifier is recorded only in the desk report. The other is a lawyer whose surname is Boden and which the extraction renders Baden. The rest are Baden-Württemberg and its misreadings, Baden-Baden, Baden in Austria and in Pennsylvania, a musician, a physician of a different name, and plain OCR noise in bank statements and phone logs. ➡ A desk that searched baden and did not classify would be wrong more than half the time.1

⚠ And 68 is a floor, not a count. The release demonstrably mis-OCRs this surname in both directions — it produces Mchael on the most important sheet in the set and it turns another man’s Boden into Baden — so sheets that name him as something this page cannot predict are unreachable by any query run for it. No search was run for him by role phrase alone, so an unnamed private pathologist or their pathology consultant is outside every figure above.12

10 August 2019: the brother asks, and OCME does not yet know who for

Tier: documented fact, from the Chief Medical Examiner’s own internal case file. At 17:14 on 10 August an OCME investigator logged arrival at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, and at 17:29 the same investigator logged this:

He has no objection to autopsy; however, he has requested that Ns privately retained pathologist (unknown wto at this time) be allowed to be present to observe the autopsy

⚠ Ns and wto are the extraction’s renderings of what reads as his and who, and they are not mended here. The entry continues, as the extraction gives it, that the investigator contacted Dr. Graham and he approved this request as a courtesy to the farnlly, that the pathologist needs to be at the office at 9am tomorrow morning for security processing, swabbing and observer document completion, and that the medico-legal investigator would call back the brother and update me With Re name of the private pathologist.5

➡ Read that last clause. At 17:29 on 10 August the Office of Chief Medical Examiner expected the name of the private pathologist to come back from the brother. ⚠ It did not. It came from defence counsel, six hours later.

Two hours after that log entry, defence counsel asked the government for time. On an e-mail thread headed Re: US v Epstein, a lawyer identifying himself as part of Jeffrey Epstein's legal team wrote at 19:35:

On a related note, we are hearing that Jeffrey’s autopsy may occur tomorrow morning. We would like to have a pathologist present for his autopsy and cannot line up someone on such short notice. Is there any way to push the autopsy off until Tuesday to give us time to do that?4

At 23:04 a prosecutor relayed the medical examiner’s answer, having spoken moments ago with Dr. Jason Graham at OCME. The relay records that Graham said his office was in touch with the family today — I believe Mark — and he had the understanding a pathologist was lined up for tomorrow, that the office was prepared to delay tomorrow the autopsy, and then the sentence that matters most:

Hey conveyed that permitting a pathologist is a courtesy they extend in this type of situation, and that an additional day or two will not have an effect in their ability to evaluate the cause and manner of death.

⚠ Hey is the extraction’s rendering of what reads as They and is not mended. The relay adds that as of that night Graham has instructed his staff not to proceed tomorrow morning, pending being in touch with you for further coordination.4

➡ Documented fact: the admission of a private pathologist was characterised by OCME as a courtesy, and that characterisation was made on 10 August — before any dispute existed, and therefore not defensively. ⚠ Courtesy is nonetheless OCME’s own word for its own act, and this page does not adopt it as a neutral description.

11 August 2019, between 03:15 and 03:42 UTC: counsel names him, three times in twenty-seven minutes

Tier: documented fact. This is the earliest naming of him in the entire release, and it is in defence counsel’s hand. At 03:15:25 +0000 the same lawyer replied on the Re: US v Epstein thread:

M. The pathologist we have lined up for tomorrow is Michael Baden. We are confirmed for 9 am unless traffic delays his arrival. Many thanks for reconfirming the start time. Mike4

Three minutes later he wrote directly to OCME, in a message whose body is a single paragraph:

My name is Mike Miller and I am part of Jeffrey Epstein’s legal team. Just a quick note to confirm that we have lined up Michael Baden to observe the autopsy tomorrow and barring any traffic delays he will be there b 9 am tomorrow.15

⚠ b 9 am is the extraction’s rendering and is not mended. ⛔ The telephone and mail fields on that sheet are not reproduced, described or located here.

And at 03:40:42 +0000 a Southern District prosecutor told OCME the same thing in the government’s own words, quoting a message sent at 11:20 PM:

Following up on our conversation a few minutes ago, thank you for giving me a call and for your assistance. As discussed, defense counsel has arranged for an individual to join the autopsy; his name is Michael Baden. He is confirmed for 9:00 a.m. tomorrow.3

Two confirmations came back from the medical examiner’s side within seventy-one seconds of each other. One, at 03:40:42 +0000: Thanks. Understood. Will make arrangements. The other, at 03:41:53 +0000: Thanks. We will make arrangements and expect Baden tomorrow morning. ⛔ The producer withheld the sender on both of those replies. This page does not supply either from context, and states nothing about what the withholding covers.316

The attribution question, and why it has to stay a question

Eight documents in this release say who engaged him, and they do not agree. Set out in the order the documents themselves carry:

whenwhat it sayswhose words
10 Aug, 17:29the next of kin has requested that Ns privately retained pathologist (unknown wto at this time) be allowed to be presentOCME internal case notes5

30 OctA forensic pathologist hired by Jeffrey Epstein's brother disputed the official findingThe New York Times, in the FBI Director’s morning news briefing9
30 Octa forensic pathologist hired by the disgraced financier's brother told Fox & Friendsa news summary in a government mailbox17

➡ The sequence resolves what the count cannot, and only the timeline makes it visible. On the evening of 10 August the brother asked OCME to admit a privately retained pathologist whose identity OCME recorded as unknown, and OCME expected the brother to supply the name. Six hours later it was defence counsel who named him, fixed the hour, and notified the prosecutors and the medical examiner directly. Three days after the autopsy the earliest press account in this release also said attorneys. The hired by his brother formulation arrives on 30 October 2019 — in press copy, eighty days after the event it describes.

⛔⛔ What the documents establish is who asked and who arranged. They do not establish who paid. No engagement letter, retainer, invoice, fee record or billing reference appears anywhere in the attributable set, and none was found by any search run for this page. Tier: question. The only word in the release that touches payment is a characterisation, not a record: an internal FBI message of 30 October calling him his paid pathologist.182

⚠ And the most-repeated attribution in this release is the latest and the least sourced. A fifth principal — the Epstein estate — stands in a web-encyclopaedia print-out inside this production. ⛔ That sheet is deliberately not cited on this page, and its identifier is recorded only in the desk report for it.19

11 August 2019: the swab, the observer form, and a ligature nobody had looked at

Tier: documented fact, and this is the only genuinely primary record of his attendance in the whole release. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner’s internal case notes for the decedent — ⚠ filed in this corpus under the document type property.lease — carry four entries that matter.

At 08:20 the case file logs a whole-body X-ray. At 08:58:

Dr. Mchael Baden presented to our office with the Decedent’s brother to watch the autopsy. He was given an observer form to complete and wet swabbed before he went to observe the autopsy

⚠ Mchael is the extraction’s rendering of his forename on the most important sheet in the set, and it is not mended. A further entry records the examination itself as Exam: Autopsy, and another, filed under Investigations:

DNA swabs collected on 08/11/19 from autopsy observer, Dr. Michael Baden. submitted to OCME HR for processing.

➡ He was swabbed as a contamination control before he was admitted. That is a procedural fact of real weight and it is available nowhere in the press material.5

And then, filed as a ME Supplemental Note under Pathology, a note written the same evening:

Before the autopsy and this evening. I spoke to Detective from the FBI liason unit at NYPD. I explained to him what information I need (lull Investigation) and asked that the decedent’s clothing be brought to me for examination. I told him that the ligature is at OCME. but is at the DNA building and it veil not be brought to me until tomorrow. so I have not examined it yet

⚠⚠ The extraction of this sheet is visibly damaged and the damage is left exactly as it stands. lull reads as full, liason is the sheet’s own spelling, veil reads as will, and the sentence breaks are full stops where a comma is the sense. ⛔ Nothing here is repaired inside the quotation marks. ⚠ The extraction returns no name after the word Detective, and this page adds nothing there and says nothing about it. ⚠⚠ And a second caution, which is the extraction’s and not the document’s: the body of each note and the DateTime / Entered By columns are interleaved out of sequence in the text layer of this sheet. This page therefore states no author for this note beyond what the note’s own filing line says — Pathology — and does not attribute it to any named person.513

➡ Documented fact: on the day of the autopsy the ligature had not been examined, and the office said so in its own internal file. ⚠ Nothing on this sheet or any other read for this page records who, if anyone, examined it afterwards, or what he was permitted to see while he was in the room.

11 to 14 August 2019: pending, and a fracture already on the record

At 14:55 on autopsy day a lieutenant commanding an NYPD/FBI joint task force circulated a preliminary summary headed The following is a brief update as it relates to the Epstein Autopsy. ⛔ The producer withheld the sender and the recipients of that message and this page does not supply them. Its substance, in full as it bears on this page:

Ligature marks around the neck, petechia hemorrhage in the eyes, fractured hyoid bone-All the injuries noted are consistent with the circumstances surrounding the death.

Deep tissue bleeding to left shoulder/scapula area, which is believed to be caused from the position he hung himself.

Dr. Roman would not provide a Cause & Manner of Death at this time and will be pending this case for additional studies (histology, neuropathology, toxicology)

In addition, the family hired private pathologist, Dr. Baden Michael, who was present for the autopsy.7

⭐⭐ This is the single most consequential document on the page for reading the dispute, and the desk’s triage did not report it. ➡ A fractured hyoid bone is in a law-enforcement summary on autopsy day, eighty days before he discussed a hyoid fracture publicly — and in that summary the injuries are characterised as consistent with the circumstances surrounding the death. ⚠ The October press account describes three fractures where this summary records one. This page does not reconcile the two. Neither document is a pathology report, both are characterisations, and each is attributed above to whoever made it. ➡ What the pair does establish, at the tier of documented fact, is that the disagreement in this release is about how findings were read and not about whether they existed.

That evening OCME issued a public statement, and the determination was pending. Its text, as circulated on the office’s press list at 18:51 ET:

Today, a medical examiner performed the autopsy of Jeffrey Epstein. The ME’s determination is pending further information at this time. At the request of those representing the decedent, and with the awareness of the federal prosecutor, I allowed a private pathologist (Dr. Michael Baden) to observe the autopsy examination. This is routine practice.

My office defers to the involved law enforcement agencies regarding other investigations around this death.6

➡ Documented fact: OCME called his presence routine practice on the day, before anyone disputed anything. ⚠ His presence was therefore neither irregular nor a concession extracted under pressure — and routine practice is still OCME’s characterisation of its own conduct.

⚠ The container that carries that statement in this release is itself worth a sentence, under the access-and-power layer rather than the forensic one: it is a journalist’s forward. The sheet shows the OCME press release reaching an NBC News reporter at 18:51 ET, being passed inside the newsroom at 18:52 and 18:53, and then forwarded at 22:56:07 +0000 to a Bureau of Prisons recipient with two words: Just FYI. ⛔ No address on that sheet is reproduced, and the producer’s treatment of parts of it is not described, located or characterised here.6

Three days later the determination was still open. A press report inside the Southern District’s own 14 August news-clip compilation states that New York City Medical Examiner Barbara Sampson has not yet completed her report, and, in the same paragraph, gives the earliest press attribution in this release:

Epstein’s attorneys meanwhile have tapped a storied pathologist for their own investigation: Dr. Michael Baden, who testified in O.J. Simpson’s defense and helped investigate the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King Jr.8

⚠ That last sentence is a press characterisation of his standing and is quoted as one. ⛔ This page makes no claim about his career beyond quoting what documents in this release say about it.

21 August to 30 October 2019: the hole in the middle of the file

⚠⚠ A seventy-day gap sits in this subject’s record, and the event the whole dispute turns on falls inside it.

Measured for this page over the 41 documents reached by a phrase form, documents.email_date gives 4 documents on 10 August, 8 on 11 August, 2 on 14 August, 1 on 21 August — and then nothing at all until 30 October, when 3 appear, with 2 more on 31 October and 1 on 6 November, and 20 of the 41 carrying no date field at all. ⚠ The desk’s triage reports the same shape over its larger 48-document set, with 7 on 30 October; that figure is inherited and was not re-derived here. The gap itself reproduces exactly on both denominators. ⚠ The triage also reports that in-text dates across the usable name-sheets agree, with no in-text date between 28 August and 30 October 2019; that too is inherited.2

⛔⛔ CORRECTED 2026-10-01. THIS PASSAGE PREVIOUSLY SAID THIS RELEASE WAS SILENT ON THE DETERMINATION. IT IS NOT, AND THE ERROR WAS THIS PAGE’S METHOD RATHER THAN ITS READING. The signed determination stands in this release, on a document that carries no occurrence of the subject’s name on any of its 84 sheets — so every search that built this page was blind to it by construction. The record is given below and the paragraph that follows it is what this page now says.

The REPORT OF AUTOPSY of the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Case 19-019432, Date of Autopsy: 08/11/2019. From page_number 12: CAUSE OF DEATH: HANGING and MANNER OF DEATH: SUICIDE (HANGED SELF). From page_number 17: This report is reviewed by Dr. … First Deputy Chief Medical Examiner., then Electronically signed by … on Aug 27, 2019 07:38:00 AM — the ellipses marking where the extraction returns nothing, with no claim made about the printed sheet. From page_number 11, under FINAL DIAGNOSES: I. HANGING:, the enumerated findings include E. FRACTURES OF BILATERAL THYROID CARTILAGE CORNUAE AND LEFT HYOID CORNUA WITH ACCOMPANYING SOFT TISSUE hemorrhage.20

➡ So the determination is dated by a primary record: the report was signed 27 August 2019.

⛔⛔ CORRECTED A SECOND TIME, 2026-10-01T1600Z. THE FIRST CORRECTION SAID THIS RELEASE CARRIED NO ANNOUNCEMENT OF THE FINDING. IT CARRIES ONE, AND THE DESK MADE THE SAME CLASS OF ERROR TWICE IN AN HOUR. The Inspector General’s chronology records, on a marker-free sheet: The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, City of New York, releases its findings publicly that the cause of Epstein's death was hanging and that the manner of death was suicide.21 And a contemporaneous press item in the release dates it in running prose: New York's chief medical examiner, Barbara Sampson, ruled Epstein's cause of death a suicide on Aug. 16. The ruling came five days after the medical examiner's office conducted an autopsy.22

⚠ THE DATE IS TAKEN FROM THE PRESS ITEM AND NOT FROM THE CHRONOLOGY, DELIBERATELY. In the chronology’s extraction the date column and the entry column are returned as separate runs, so pairing a date with an entry there would be a reconstruction rather than a reading. The press item is continuous prose and carries the date inside the sentence.

So the sequence this release documents is: the determination pending (11 August) · the autopsy (11 August) · the findings released publicly (16 August) · three further studies dated 20, 21 and 22 August · the report signed (27 August) · the determination defended after it was challenged (30 and 31 October).

⚠ The public release of findings therefore precedes the signing of the report by eleven days, with three dated studies falling between them. ⛔ This page records that sequence and draws NO conclusion from it — not about prematurity, not about procedure, and not about cause of death. A reference layer can show a reader the order of dated events; it cannot tell them what the order means.

⚠ AND THE ENUMERATION ABOVE BEARS ON A DISPUTE THIS PAGE DECLINES TO RESOLVE. The report lists fractures at three sites — both thyroid cartilage cornuae and the left hyoid cornu. This page records what the report enumerates and draws no conclusion from it about cause of death, which remains outside what a reference layer can settle.

⛔ This page still does not patch the interval with an outside date, and a reader should not read it as an absence of events. The honest formulation is now narrower and stronger: the release documents the arrangement, the signed determination and the dispute; what it does not document is how or when the finding was made public.

30 October 2019: the broadcast, and four institutions reacting in one day

At 11:23:51 an internal message warned that it was coming:

Baden is going to discuss Ns opinion c4 Epstein autopsy on Fox News at 0730.

⚠ Ns and c4 are the extraction’s renderings of his and of and are not mended. ⚠⚠ Note that the log prints 11:23:51 while the message refers to a broadcast at 0730. Two clocks are on that one line. ⛔ No interval, offset or mapping is derived from it on this page, and none should be.23

What he is reported to have said reaches this release through the FBI Director’s own morning news briefing, a compilation headed FBI PUBLIC AFFAIRS - DIRECTOR'S AM NEWS BRIEFING, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 31, 2019 5:00 AM EDT. ⚠ Filed in this corpus under the document type blank.photo. Its summary of the New York Times report:

A forensic pathologist hired by Jeffrey Epstein’s brother disputed the official finding in the autopsy of his death, claiming on Wednesday that the evidence suggested that he did not take his own life but may have been strangled.

and of the interview itself, as the Times rendered it, that he said Epstein

experienced a number of injuries — among them a broken bone in his neck — that ‘are extremely unusual in suicidal hangings and could occur much more commonly in homicidal strangulation.’

and, from the Fox News report on the same sheet, that

he described three fractures that were noted in the autopsy: one each on the left and right sides of his larynx, specifically the thyroid cartilage or Adam’s apple, and one on the left hyoid bone above the Adam’s apple.9

⚠⚠ Tier: documented fact that these words were printed as his. Credible allegation as to the facts they assert — and nothing more than that, because there is no document in this release in which he states any of it himself. ⚠ Read the modal verbs in the one sentence the press gives in quotation marks: extremely unusual, could occur much more commonly. They are comparative statements about likelihood, not a determination. ⛔ The anatomical detail above concerns the deceased and is the subject matter of the page. No clinical or anatomical detail about any living person appears anywhere in this release’s attributable set, and none would be reproduced here if it did.

The Chief Medical Examiner answered the same day, twice. Directly, on the same briefing sheet: I stand firmly behind our determination of the cause and manner of death in this case. And in a written statement circulated inside the Department of Justice:

Our investigation concluded that the cause of Mr. Epstein’s death was hanging and the manner of death was suicide. We stand by that determination. We continue to share information around the medical investigation with Mr. Epstein’s family, their representatives, and their pathology consultant. The original medical investigation was thorough and complete. There is no reason for a second medical investigation by our office.129

⭐ Read the third sentence of that statement, which the desk’s triage omitted. OCME says it was continuing to share information with the family, their representatives, and their pathology consultant. ⚠ It does not name the consultant, and this page does not supply the name from context. ➡ What the sentence does establish, at the tier of documented fact, is that OCME’s public position on 30 October was not that the family’s pathologist had been shut out. ⚠ What he was given, and when, is not recorded anywhere in this release.

The Southern District’s press officer circulated the story to colleagues at 12:22:50 +0000 under the subject line Pathologist Michael Baden says Jeffrey Epstein was homicide victim, over a body of one word: FYI. The signature block is James Margolin, Chief Public Information Officer, U.S. Attorney's Office, SDNY. The same morning the New York Times piece was circulating inside a Southern District mailbox at 11:50 under the subject Epstein article. ⛔ The sender and recipient of that second message are withheld by the producer and are not supplied here.24

And the FBI’s Office of Public Affairs logged a media inquiry and declined it. Its daily internal digest The Horizon for Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019 carries the item:

Jeffreapstein Autopsy: OPA - Inside Edition asked for comment on Dr. Michael Baden’s interview on FOX & Friends today suggesting that Jeffrey Epstein’s autopsy was more consistent with homicidal strangulation than with suicide. OPA declined to comment.

⚠ The heading is quoted exactly as the extraction returns it. Jeffreapstein reads as Jeffrey Epstein and is NOT mended inside the quotation marks. ⛔ Nothing else on that sheet, which is a daily digest of unrelated media business, is reproduced or characterised here.25

Internally, the same afternoon, the characterisation was not neutral. An FBI message log records, at 13:16:54:

Mark Epstein and his paid pathologist have gone public with their conspiracy theory.

answered at 13:16:58: Yeah, I was waiting till you got in for that one. Very funny stuff. And at 13:19:04: SDNY had a planned meeting with Mark Epstein on Monday but he didn't show. I'm sure that's why. SONY will no longer support a meeting with him until after the guards are charged. ⚠ SONY is the extraction’s rendering of SDNY and is not mended.18

⚠⚠ Tier: credible record of attitude inside the investigation, and nothing more. ⛔ The producer left the party columns of this log empty. This page does not supply them, does not characterise them, and says nothing about what is covered. It is one party’s internal view of two other people. It is not evidence about the merits, and the word paid in it is a characterisation, not a record of payment.

Did we test the ligature for DNA? — and the answer the triage missed

⛔⛔ The desk’s triage of this subject reported, twice, that no document in the attributable set answers this question, and commissioned the page to say so. That is wrong. The answer is on the sheet, below the question, on the same clock. It is recorded here as a correction and the desk report for this page records it as one.

At 19:10:46 on 30 October 2019, hours after the broadcast, an FBI message log carries:

ADIC getting questions as expected after the Fox interview. Did we test the ligature for DNA?

At 19:13:17:

No. The only people that had access to Epstein were the guards. They for sure touched the noose. so no need to have it tested.

At 19:14:13:

Additionally, BOP did not secure it prior to us taking custody, s0 we dis not know who all touched it.

And at 19:19:35, apparently to a different correspondent, the same answer in fuller form:

Negative. The COs were only ones to have access to JE and theywere known to have touched it (removal). Additionally, it was not secured before we took custody So unknown who all may have touched it.

⚠ s0, dis and theywere are the extraction’s renderings and are not mended. dis reads as did, s0 as so. ⛔ The producer left the party columns of this log empty. This page does not supply them. ⚠ The whole run above stands on one sheet on one clock, which is why it is quoted together. The log carries this day’s traffic more than once in the same document and the printed times are not identical across those renderings; ⛔ no interval, offset or mapping is derived here from any pair of times that is not printed on the single sheet cited.10

➡ Documented fact, and it is a hard one: the ligature was not DNA-tested, and the reason given internally was that the only people with access had handled it in the course of taking the body down.

⚠⚠ And read the second sentence against the first, because they do not sit easily together. The first answer is that testing was unnecessary because it is known who touched it. The follow-up is that the item was not secured before we took custody so it is unknown who all may have touched it. ➡ Tier: question, and it is the right place for the page to stop. The sequence raises the question of how both propositions were held at once, and no document in this release answers it. ⛔ This page does not assert that the ligature should have been tested, does not assert that the decision was wrong, and does not treat either message as a forensic determination. They are two lines of internal text written in minutes under press pressure.

⚠ Set the three dates side by side and the shape of the thing is visible without anybody embellishing it. 11 August: the office’s own file records that the ligature was at the DNA building and had not been examined. 30 October, 19:10: the Bureau is asking itself by text message whether it was ever tested. 30 October, 19:13: the answer is no, on a rationale its own next sentence undercuts. ⛔ Each of those three is a quotation above, each is attributed to its own document, and no fourth sentence is added to join them into a conclusion.

The challenge that is not his: the Department of Justice Inspector General

⭐ The strongest institutional challenge to the determination in this release does not come from him. It comes from the Inspector General, and it is put to the medical examiner’s office directly. ⛔ The producer withheld the speaker designations throughout this transcript. This page does not reproduce them and does not supply either of them from context. The exchange, in an undated DOJ OIG interview of an OCME witness under oath:

The questioner asks whether she recalls that Epstein’s brother hired his own medical examiner to be also present for the autopsy, and then for the name. The witness answers: Yeah. So, that was Dr. Michael Baden. ⚠ The text layer of this sheet prints the intervening lines out of sequence; the two exchanges above are given in the order the transcript’s own line numbering establishes and the disordered lines are not reconstructed into anything else.11

Then the Inspector General puts the real question:

And they mentioned, they told the OIG that, when they spoke with you, that you needed information from the correctional officer who found Jeffrey Epstein, before you could make the determination on cause of death, and instead of waiting on that information, you actually moved forward and made a determination anyway as suicide.

⚠⚠ Tier, and three distinct tiers have to be kept apart here. That question is the OIG’s characterisation of what other people told the OIG — a report of a report. It is documented fact that the question was asked and put squarely to the witness. It is not evidence that the determination was premature.

Her answer is the part this release had not previously surfaced:

So, what I did was, we attempted to get the information from the correctional officer, and I also, I wanted to go and see the cell. They wouldn’t allow that. I wanted to see some film footage. I was allowed to do that.

➡ Documented fact: the medical examiner’s office sought access to the cell and was refused. ⚠ The transcript does not record who refused, and this page does not supply it. ⛔ A refusal recorded from inside an investigation is evidence about the investigation, and it is logged here as carefully as any produced document — and it is not evidence about the cause of death.

She goes on to describe the decision in her own words:

You know, and mostly, in this case, it was being thorough. If he had been a less high-profile person who there weren’t people wanting to kill, I would have probably called it a hanging on the day of autopsy. But this was thoroughness that made me look for these things before I called it a suicide.

and, asked what she had wanted from the correctional officers:

So, what I ideally would have liked to know was, how was he hanging? And was this thing that they gave me the actual ligature? So, I still don’t think we really know that, or at least I’m not as convinced as I would like to be.11

⭐⭐ That is testimony, under oath, from the medical examiner’s own side, that she was not satisfied the item she was given was the ligature. ➡ Tier: documented fact as to what she said; credible allegation as to the doubt it reports. ⚠⚠ Set beside the internal FBI answer of 30 October — that the item was not secured before we took custody so it is unknown who all may have touched it — the two documents are about custody of the same object and they were produced by different institutions. ⛔ This page states that and stops. It does not combine them into a finding, it does not assert that the item was not the ligature, and it does not assert that any of it bears on the cause of death.

⚠ Proportion, stated plainly, because it is easy to get backwards. A page built around a television interview while omitting this exchange would be the wrong page. An Inspector General putting the prematurity question to the medical examiner on the record, and the medical examiner answering that she was refused access to the cell and is still not certain she was given the right object, is institutionally weightier than a broadcast — and it is entirely independent of the subject of this page.

Elsewhere in this release

He appears in the production in two other capacities, neither of which bears on the Epstein autopsy.

As a press commentator on a different death. A 2011 New York Times article in this release reports him examining photographs of Colonel Muammar Qaddafi’s body and saying there were as many as two bullet wounds and possibly four, fired at fairly close range, and: It looks more like an execution than something that happened during a struggle. The article describes him as a forensic pathologist in New York and a former New York City medical examiner.14

➡ That is the only description of his former office anywhere in this release that this page will use. ⛔ One other document in the set states a length of tenure. It is press copy in an article adverse to him, it is a claim about his standing rather than about the case, and it is not repeated here from this corpus alone.19

As a colleague, in somebody’s memoir. A legal memoir in the House Oversight production, discussing a 1998 Las Vegas death in which he had consulted, calls him one of the world's leading forensic pathologists (and a friend of mine). ⛔ The author is not named on that sheet and this page does not supply a name. Nothing about that other case is reproduced or characterised here. ⚠ Tier: a self-published characterisation in a draft manuscript. It is the lowest-weight statement cited on this page and it is cited only because an apparently independent assessment of his standing, in this release, turns out to come from somebody who describes himself as his friend.26

Two traps in this record, disarmed

⛔⛔ There is an apparent professional endorsement of him in a Department of Justice mailbox, and it is nothing of the kind. A message in the set reads I, of course, heard Dr. Baden's conclusions today. I have the utmost respect for Dr. Baden. Will your office address why the medical examiner is refusing to take a second look at this case.... Read from a snippet in a government mailbox that looks like institutional support. It is an unsolicited e-mail from a private member of the public with no role in the case, sent at 02:34 on 31 October, and the covering Department of Justice message forwarding it inside the office calls it, in terms, a lunatic email. ⛔ The sender is a private individual with no investigative bearing on this subject and is not named here. ➡ Any page that cited this as official support would have invented a finding. It is recorded here only so that the trap is disarmed for the next reader.27

⛔ And the second trap is the production’s own filing. ⚠⚠ The document types recorded in this corpus are not reliable and must never be used to scope a search on this subject. Measured on this set: the Office of Chief Medical Examiner’s case notes — the single most probative document on this page — are filed as property.lease, and their recorded sender is Correctional Officer. The FBI text-message log is filed as phone.cdr. The FBI Director’s news briefing is filed as blank.photo. The NBC journalist’s forward that carries the OCME press statement is recorded with a sender of Jeffrey Epstein and an email_date of 6 November 2019, while the message it contains is stamped 11 August 2019. ➡ Documented fact about the production itself, and it is a finding, not a grumble: a desk that filtered this subject by document type would have lost the best evidence in the set and kept the press clippings.13

What this page does not establish

⛔ This page is about documents. Where they stop, it stops.

  • It does not establish who paid him. No engagement letter, retainer, invoice or fee record appears anywhere in the attributable set. Four different principals are named across eight documents; the contemporaneous primaries name counsel and the best-known formulation arrives eighty days later in press copy. The question is open.2
  • It does not establish his conclusions as pathological findings. Nothing in this release was written by him. His position reaches this record only through press accounts of a television interview and through government readers’ summaries of those accounts, and it is written that way throughout.2
  • ⛔ CORRECTED TWICE ON 2026-10-01, AND BOTH EARLIER VERSIONS OF THIS LINE WERE FALSE. It first said no primary record of the determination appears in the set; the signed REPORT OF AUTOPSY is in the set, dated Aug 27, 2019 07:38:00 AM. It then said no record of the finding being made public appears in the set; the Inspector General’s chronology records the office releasing its findings publicly, and a press item dates that to 16 August 2019. ✅ What this release still does not establish is the MANNER of the announcement — no statement issued by the office declaring the finding stands on any sheet this page is permitted to use.92
  • It does not establish what access he had during the examination, how long he was present, what he was shown, or what OCME later shared with the family’s pathology consultant. All of that is unmeasured, which is not the same as negative.2
  • It does not establish anything about the ligature beyond the two documents quoted. That it had not been examined on autopsy day, and that an internal FBI exchange three months later said it had not been DNA-tested and gave two reasons that sit in tension. ⛔ No conclusion about the cause or manner of death follows from either, and none is drawn.510
  • It does not adopt anybody’s characterisation as a fact. Courtesy, routine practice, conspiracy theory, paid pathologist, storied pathologist, thorough and complete: each is quoted above and each is attributed to whoever used it.
  • It does not treat a bare surname as an attribution, and no figure on this page comes from one. The union floor of 68 sheets and 48 documents is inherited from the desk’s triage and was not re-derived here; the 50 sheets and 41 documents reached by a phrase form were measured for this page.1
  • It establishes nothing from one container in the set. One sheet of this subject’s file is a single database row of 1,142,451 characters — on its own, 89.8% of the set’s entire text, and 235 times larger than the next largest sheet. ⛔ With one row, no sheet inside it can be identified, so no pin into it is possible and nothing on this page cites it.19
  • It says nothing whatever about the condition of any sheet cited here beyond the words quoted from it. ⛔ No statement anywhere on this page describes, locates, counts, or characterises any mark applied to any sheet in the course of its production, says what any such mark covers, compares one copy of a document with another, or supplies any withheld value from context. ⚠ Where this page says a sender or a speaker designation is withheld, that is a statement that this page does not have it and will not go and get it.
  • It is not verified at the image. ⚠⚠ Every quotation on this page is read from the text layer of the extracted corpus and every one is marked UNVERIFIED in its footnote. The local image store holds no file for these identifiers and this pass did not go to the site server. For the OCME case notes in particular the extraction is visibly damaged, and every damaged string quoted from them is flagged where it appears.13

Footnotes

  1. Name-form measurement run for this page on 2026-10-01 against the full-text index of this release (pages_fts), counts in sheets (rows in pages) and documents (distinct identifiers). Counted: "michael baden" 39 sheets / 32 documents; "dr. baden" 17/16; "dr baden" 17/16 — the same query, because the tokenizer discards the full stop, so these two rows are not additive; "baden michael" 5/5; "baden, michael" 5/5 — again the same query, the comma being discarded, which is why this is not a surname-first index form but the inverted agency rendering Dr. Baden Michael; "michael m. baden" 0/0; "m. baden" 0/0; bare token baden 158/105. Union of the three distinct attributable phrase forms: 50 sheets / 41 documents. Invented controls, all returning 0/0: zzqbaden, "michael zzqbaden", "zzqmichael baden". Document-level check on the homograph: of the 158 bare-surname sheets, 21 stand in one single document, a transcript on which a court reporter of the same surname signs a certification line once per sheet — ⛔ that document is a deposition in survivors’ proceedings, it is not cited, quoted or pinned anywhere on this page, and its identifier is recorded only in the desk report; the reporter is not named here. ⚠ The attribution of all 158 sheets, and the union floor of 68 sheets across 48 documents that follows from it, is the desk triage’s hand classification dated 2026-10-01 and was NOT re-derived sheet by sheet for this page. It is quoted here as a floor, not a count, for the triage’s three stated reasons and one of this page’s own: the release mis-OCRs this surname in both directions, at least two spelling variants were found only by reading sheets, no search was run for him by role phrase without his name, and the one search that would reach a sheet calling him their pathology consultant was not run. ⚠ A method note that cost the desk a figure and is recorded so it is not repeated: a bare FTS token for a truncated stem returns a confident zero. autops returns 13 sheets corpus-wide and 0 over this subject’s name-sheets, where autops* returns 41. And MATCH '"autops*"' returns 0 because inside double quotes the asterisk is a literal character. Every stem query run for this page was an unquoted prefix. ↩ ↩2 ↩3 ↩4 ↩5 ↩6

  2. What was searched for and not found, stated as unmeasured or as negative, and labelled. NEGATIVE, measured: documents.sender matching baden returns 0 rows across 1,425,573 documents. No affidavit, declaration, sworn statement or report of his stands anywhere in the attributable set, and no engagement letter, retainer, invoice or fee record for him appears in it; both were searched for by the desk’s triage and by this pass and neither returned anything. No announcement of the suicide determination appears as a primary record on any sheet carrying his name. The dated record of his file runs 10, 11, 14 and 21 August 2019, then nothing until 30 October 2019. ⚠ Measured for this page over the 41 documents reached by a phrase form: 4 documents dated 10 August, 8 on 11 August, 2 on 14 August, 1 on 21 August, then NOTHING until 3 on 30 October, 2 on 31 October and 1 on 6 November, with 20 of the 41 carrying no date field at all. The desk’s triage reports the same shape over its larger 48-document set, with 7 on 30 October and 23 undated; that larger figure is inherited and was not re-derived here. The gap itself reproduces exactly on both denominators: no document in either set is dated between 21 August and 30 October 2019. ⚠ The triage further reports that in-text dates across the usable name-sheets agree, with no in-text date between 28 August and 30 October 2019; that is inherited and was not re-derived here. ⛔ That seventy-day hole is reported as a gap and is NOT patched with any date from outside this release. UNMEASURED, and therefore not negative: whether he appears in this release under a role phrase that never spells his name, including their pathology consultant; whether any spelling variant beyond those enumerated exists; what access he had during the examination, how long he was present, or what he was shown; whether the ligature was ever tested by anyone after 30 October 2019; who paid him, and on what terms; and whether the determination was correct. ⚠ Each of those is unmeasured. None of them is a finding of absence. ↩ ↩2 ↩3 ↩4 ↩5 ↩6 ↩7 ↩8 ↩9

Stamp EFTA00024361. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. From this sheet this page takes the subject and date lines, the three sentences of the 11:20 PM message quoted in the body, and the three-word reply Thanks. Understood. Will make arrangements. The 20:19 message, from which nothing is quoted, is a prosecutor’s request for a telephone call. ⛔⛔ The producer withheld the sender, the recipient and the copy line of the reply. This page does NOT supply any of them from context, states no class or position for any withheld value, and says nothing about what is covered — although the sender is the Southern District of New York’s own side of the exchange on the face of the quoted text. ⛔ Two cellular numbers and a mail address field stand on this sheet and none is reproduced. From this sheet this page takes: the three header lines; the whole of the 03:15 message body; the 23:04 relay as far as the sentence ending pending being in touch with you for further coordination; and the whole of the 19:35 message as quoted. ⛔⛔ A SYNTHETIC ANNOTATION HAZARD, and it governs this citation. Appended below the OCR text layer of this sheet is a block headed [═══ TRANSCRIPT ═══] in which withheld values are rendered as the uniform literal token [REDACTED]. That block is an ADDED LAYER, not a producing party’s mark, and the OCR layer above it does not carry that token. ⛔ Every quotation taken from this document is taken from ABOVE that line, and nothing below it is quoted, counted, characterised or treated as evidence of anything. ⚠ Two further earlier messages, timed 11:57 and 14:14 on 10 August, stand ONLY inside that synthetic block. The desk’s triage placed both of them in its master timeline from this identifier. They are NOT used on this page, and that is a correction. ⚠ Measured for this page, this marker is not confined to one sheet: it stands on page_number 0 and 1 of this document and on 114 rows of one other document in the attributable set, which is not cited here. The triage put the count at one sheet. ⛔ The mail and telephone fields on this sheet, and the line stating where a named official’s address was given, are not reproduced, described or located here. **Block S over all 3 rows: every term ↩ ↩2 ↩3 ↩4 ↩5

Both numbers are given above and no arithmetic relates them. ⚠⚠ TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. No page image was opened; the local image store holds no file for this identifier and this pass did not go to the site server. ⚠⚠ The extraction of these two sheets is visibly damaged — it returns upp emen a and Hospita or edical eco s elsewhere on page_number 31 — and every damaged string quoted on this page from them (Mchael, Ns, wto, farnlly, lull, veil, b 9 am) is flagged at the point of quotation and is NOT mended inside the quotation marks. ⚠⚠ The note bodies and the DateTime / Entered By columns are interleaved out of sequence in this text layer, so no note quoted here is attributed to any named person; the supplemental note is identified only by its own filing line, ME Supplemental Note / Department: Pathology. From page_number 2 this page takes: the item headline Forensic Pathologist Says Epstein May Have Been Murdered.; the New York Times sentence beginning A forensic pathologist hired by Jeffrey Epstein's brother; the clause attributed to him beginning experienced a number of injuries; the Fox News sentence beginning he described three fractures; and the Chief Medical Examiner’s sentence I stand firmly behind our determination of the cause and manner of death in this case. From page_number 3 this page takes one clause only: that the determination had been ruled in August. ⚠ The quotation marks in the source are mismatched at Baden's findings 'were strongly disputed", and the extraction renders one dateline as (10130, Leon, 27.59M). Both are quoted or paraphrased as they stand and neither is mended. ⚠ The parenthetical audience figures printed beside each outlet are the digest’s own and are not relied on for anything. ⚠ doc_type for this document is recorded as blank.photo; it carries press-summary text on every text-bearing row and the type was not used as a filter. 10. The same FBI text-message extract, https://epstein-data.com/EFTA01227447 , at page_number 232 (0-based, as found, located by string); the sheet prints its own stamp as EFTA01227679. No served page number is asserted. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. ⚠⚠ A QUOTING DISCLOSURE THAT APPLIES TO EVERY MESSAGE BODY TAKEN FROM THIS LOG. The extraction interleaves the log’s time field into the MIDDLE of each message body, so none of the message bodies quoted on this page is a contiguous run of characters on the sheet: the interleaved time field has been lifted out and the words are otherwise exactly as the extraction returns them, damage included. The lift is this page’s and is declared here, and nothing else whatever is altered. ⛔ No character-level claim is made about any of these rows. From this sheet this page takes four rows in full, and nothing else: the question at 19:10:46 (ADIC getting questions as expected after the Fox interview. Did we test the ligature for DNA?); the answer at 19:13:17 (No. The only people that had access to Epstein were the guards. They for sure touched the noose. so no need to have it tested.); the follow-up at 19:14:13 (Additionally, BOP did not secure it prior to us taking custody, s0 we dis not know who all touched it.); and the fuller answer at 19:19:35 (Negative. The COs were only ones to have access to JE and theywere known to have touched it (removal). Additionally, it was not secured before we took custody So unknown who all may have touched it.). ⚠ s0, dis, theywere and the full stop after noose are the extraction’s renderings and are NOT mended inside the quotation marks. ⛔⛔ The producer left the party columns of this log empty. This page does NOT supply any party to any of these four messages, does not state a class or position for any empty column, and says nothing about what is covered. ⚠ This sheet is NOT one of the sheets carrying the subject’s name; it is cited because it stands inside a document that is in the attributable set, and this page says so rather than implying the quotation was reached by a name search. ⚠⚠ The whole run quoted above stands on this ONE sheet on ONE clock, which is why it is quoted together. The same document carries this day’s traffic in more than one place and the printed times are not identical across those renderings. ⛔ No interval, offset or clock mapping is derived from any pair of times that is not printed on this single sheet, and no two renderings are set beside each other, compared or characterised anywhere on this page. ⛔⛔ CORRECTION OF RECORD: the desk’s triage of this subject reported, at two places, that no document in the attributable set answers the question Did we test the ligature for DNA?, and the commission for this page carried that forward as a binding instruction to write the question as unanswered. It is answered, twice, on the sheet below the question. The triage’s statement is a claim and this page measured it. The desk report for this page records the correction and the search that found it. Block S on this sheet: victim 0, complainant 0, massage 0, underage 0, minor 0, jane doe 0, traffick 0, girl 0; [VISION] 0. ⭐⭐ AND THE CORRECTION WAS CHECKED AT THE WIDEST DENOMINATOR THERE IS. Measured by case-insensitive SUBSTRING over ALL 2,925,025 rows of pages — not over this subject’s name-sheets, and not by FTS token: the phrase need to have it tested returns exactly 2 sheets in the whole corpus, both of them in this one document; test the ligature returns 3 sheets, all three in this one document; touched the noose returns 2 sheets, both in this one document. Invented control zzqnoose returns 0. ➡ So the answer to the question is not summarised, quoted, reported or carried forward anywhere else in this release. It exists in the production only as these raw log rows. ⚠ That is a bounded measurement of this release and nothing more: it says where the text is, NOT that no such record was ever made elsewhere. ⚠ It also explains how a name-scoped search missed it — the sheets that carry the answer do not carry his name. ↩ ↩2 ↩3

  11. Department of Justice Office of the Inspector General, transcript of an interview of a witness from the Office of Chief Medical Examiner, undated, every sheet marked LIMITED OFFICIAL USE, 61 rows in pages. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00113220 . This page cites page_number 42 and 43 (0-based, as found, located by string); those sheets print their own internal transcript page numbers as 43 and 44 and their own stamps as EFTA00113262 and EFTA00113263. ⚠⚠ Four numbers name each of these sheets and NO MAPPING between them is derived. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. ⚠⚠ A QUOTING DISCLOSURE THAT APPLIES TO EVERY PASSAGE TAKEN FROM THIS TRANSCRIPT. The transcript prints a line number at the head of every line, so none of the passages quoted on this page is a contiguous run of characters on the sheet: the line numbers have been lifted out and the words are otherwise exactly as the extraction returns them. The lift is this page’s and is declared here, and nothing else whatever is altered. ⛔ The withheld speaker-prefix lines are not reproduced at all, in whole or in part. From page_number 42 this page takes: the question about whether the brother hired his own medical examiner to be also present for the autopsy; the question asking for the name; the answer Yeah. So, that was Dr. Michael Baden.; the question beginning And they mentioned, they told the OIG that, in full; and the answer beginning So, what I did was, we attempted to get the information, in full. From page_number 43 this page takes: the passage beginning You know, and mostly, in this case, it was being thorough, in full as quoted; and the answer beginning So, what I ideally would have liked to know, in full as quoted. ⛔⛔ THE PRODUCER WITHHELD THE SPEAKER DESIGNATIONS THROUGHOUT THIS TRANSCRIPT. This page does NOT reproduce the transcript’s speaker-prefix lines, does NOT supply any designation from context, states no class or position for any withheld value, and says nothing whatever about what is covered. It refers to the parties only as the OIG questioner and the OCME witness, which is what the exchange itself establishes about their roles. ⚠⚠ The text layer of page_number 42 prints two lines out of sequence — the question asking for the name and its short affirmative answer appear at the foot of the sheet rather than in position. This page gives them in the order the transcript’s own line numbering establishes, says that the extraction disorders them, and reconstructs nothing else. ⛔ Nothing is taken from any other sheet of this transcript, including adjacent clinical questioning about the deceased. ⛔⛔ Two further copies of this interview content stand in the attributable set at the same internal page and their text layers are not identical. Under the desk’s copy rule this page cites ONE copy only, does not set any copy beside another, characterises no difference between them, and builds no claim on the fact that they differ. Block S over all 61 rows: victim 2, every other term 0; on the two sheets cited, every term 0. [VISION] sheets 0. ↩ ↩2 ↩3

  12. E-mail carrying the Chief Medical Examiner’s written statement of 30 October 2019, one row in pages. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00165534 . page_number 0, 0-based as found. Stamp EFTA00165534. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. From this sheet this page takes the covering line This is the NYC ME statement as quoted by Fox News in a follow up to Baden's appearance:, the attribution clause naming New York City Chief Medical Examiner, Dr. Barbara Sampson, and the whole of the quoted statement from Our investigation concluded to by our office. ⛔⛔ The producer withheld the sender, recipients, copy line and date fields of this message. This page does NOT supply any of them, states no class or position for any of them, and says nothing about what is covered. The statement is dated in the body of this page only to 30 October 2019, from the surrounding documents’ own dates and from the covering line’s reference to the appearance, and no more precise time is asserted. 13. Statement about this release’s own records, offered because it changes how every sheet above must be read. ⚠⚠ (1) NO IMAGE VERIFICATION WAS POSSIBLE FOR THIS PAGE AND EVERY QUOTATION ON IT IS A TEXT-LAYER READING. documents.file_path for these identifiers points into an image store that holds no file on this desk — checked, and the files are absent — and this pass did not go to the site server. Every footnote above says TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE, and no character-level claim is made anywhere on this page about the ink of any sheet. ⚠ Where a quotation is damaged, the damage is reproduced and flagged, and NOTHING is mended inside quotation marks. ⚠⚠ (2) doc_type IS NOT USABLE AND WAS NOT USED. Measured on this set, with the four misses the desk had already recorded and two fresh ones from this pass: the OCME case notes are typed property.lease and their sender is recorded as Correctional Officer; the FBI text log is typed phone.cdr; the FBI Director’s news briefing is typed blank.photo; a 406-row manuscript is typed memo; a 104-row document is typed resume; and the NBC mail container carrying the OCME press statement has a recorded sender of Jeffrey Epstein and an email_date of 2019-11-06 against content stamped 11 Aug 2019. ➡ A search scoped by document type would have lost the best evidence on this page. ⚠⚠ (3) documents.total_pages WAS NOT RELIED ON. Every run length stated on this page is a count of rows in pages. ⚠⚠ (4) page_number IS 0-BASED AND NO MAPPING TO ANY SERVED PAGE NUMBER IS DERIVED ANYWHERE ON THIS PAGE. Up to five different numbers can name one sheet in this production — the extraction row, the sheet’s own printed page marking, its own stamp, a second production stamp, and the document identifier — and the footnotes above print every number they have and relate none of them by arithmetic. Every sheet cited on this page was located by STRING. ⚠⚠ (5) A SYNTHETIC ANNOTATION LAYER EXISTS IN THIS CORPUS AND IS NOT A PRODUCING PARTY’S MARK. One document cited here carries, appended below its OCR text layer, a block headed [═══ TRANSCRIPT ═══] in which withheld values are rendered as the uniform literal token [REDACTED]. That is an added layer. ⛔ Quotation is taken only from above that line, and the block is treated exactly as a [VISION] description is treated — as not evidence of anything about any sheet. ⚠ Measured for this page, the marker stands on 2 rows of that document and on 114 rows of one other document in the attributable set. The desk’s triage put the count at one sheet. ⚠⚠ (6) [VISION] sheets: ZERO across every document cited on this page, measured per document. ⚠⚠ (7) A TRUNCATED STEM RETURNS A CONFIDENT ZERO AS A BARE FTS TOKEN, and every stem query run for this page was an unquoted prefix. Over this subject’s name-sheets autops returns 0 where autops* returns 41, and MATCH '"autops*"' returns 0 because inside double quotes the asterisk is a literal character. ⚠⚠ (8) EVERY DENOMINATOR ON THIS PAGE IS STATED. Where a figure is over sheets it says sheets, where it is over documents it says documents, and where a vocabulary screen is reported both the whole-document and the cited-sheet figures are given, because they answer different questions. ↩ ↩2 ↩3 ↩4

  14. A 2011 New York Times article in this production, 4 rows in pages. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA02694259 . This page cites page_number 3 (0-based, as found, located by string); the sheet’s own stamp is EFTA02694262. No served page number is asserted. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. From this sheet this page takes: the sentence beginning A forensic pathologist in New York, Dr. Michael Baden. as far as fired at fairly close range.; the quotation It looks more like an execution than something that happened during a struggle; and the appositive a former New York City medical examiner. ⚠ The full stop after his name in the first sentence is the extraction’s and is not mended. ⛔⛔ This document is in the release for reasons unconnected with this subject and NOTHING else on the sheet is reproduced or characterised. It is cited for two things only: that he gave forensic readings to the press on high-profile deaths before 2019, and that a source other than the article adverse to him describes his former office. ⚠ It establishes nothing about the Epstein autopsy and is not used for anything about it. Block S: every term 0; [VISION] 0. ↩ ↩2

  15. E-mail from "Miller, Michael", Subject: Epstein Autopsy, Date: Sun, 11 Aug 2019 03:18:07 +0000, addressed to a named official at the Office of Chief Medical Examiner. One row in pages. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00103882 . page_number 0, 0-based as found; no served page number asserted. The sheet’s own stamp is EFTA00103882. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. From this sheet this page takes the two header fields quoted and the body as far as he will be there b 9 am tomorrow, and nothing after it. ⛔⛔ The recipient address line and the sender’s cellular number are on this sheet and NEITHER is reproduced, described or located here. Block S: every term 0. ↩

  16. E-mail, Subject: Re: Epstein Autopsy, Date: Sun, 11 Aug 2019 03:41:53 +0000, one row in pages, quoting a message of On Aug 10, 2019, at 11:18 PM from Miller, Michael. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00103878 . page_number 0, 0-based as found. Stamp EFTA00103878. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. From this sheet this page takes one sentence: Thanks. We will make arrangements and expect Baden tomorrow morning. ⛔⛔ The producer withheld the sender of this reply. This page does NOT supply it from context, and the fact that another document in this set would permit a reader to do so is not a licence and is not acted on. ⛔ A cellular number stands on this sheet and is not reproduced. Block S: every term 0. ↩

  17. A news-summary newsletter in a government mailbox, 5 rows in pages. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00083661 . This page cites page_number 3 (0-based, as found, located by string); the sheet’s own stamp is EFTA00083664. No served page number is asserted. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. 18. FBI text-message extract, 289 rows in pages. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA01227447 . ⚠ doc_type for this document is recorded as phone.cdr; it carries message bodies and the type was not used as a filter. This page cites page_number 138 and 139 (0-based, as found, located by string); those sheets print their own stamps as EFTA01227585 and EFTA01227586. No served page numbers are asserted and no mapping is derived. From page_number 138 this page takes nothing but the fact that the Fox News story headline is logged OUTBOX at 13:16:19. From page_number 139 this page takes four rows: 13:16:54 Mark Epstein and his paid pathologist have gone public with their conspiracy theory.; 13:16:58 Yeah, I was waiting till you got in for that one. Very funny stuff.; 13:19:04 the SDNY had a planned meeting with Mark Epstein message in full; and nothing else. ⛔⛔ The producer left the phone-number, address and recipient columns of this log empty throughout. This page does NOT supply any party, does not state a class or position for any empty column, and says nothing about what any of them would contain. ⚠ The log records each message twice, once OUTBOX and once INBOX, which is the log’s own structure; the times on the two renderings of one message differ by a second or two as the log prints them and this page quotes the OUTBOX time in each case and derives no interval. ⚠ SONY for SDNY, conspiracy theOiy and theMy are the extraction’s renderings and are not mended. ⛔⛔ Other sheets of this 289-row container carry survivors’ vocabulary and material about other matters entirely. NOTHING is taken from any of them. Block S over the whole document returns victim on 31 sheets, traffick on 10, minor on 4 and underage on 2; measured on the three sheets this page cites — 138, 139 and 232 — every one of those terms returns 0, and [VISION] returns 0 across the whole document. ⚠ The denominator matters and is stated: the aggregate figures above are over 289 sheets the subject does not appear on, and the sheet-level figures are the ones this citation rests on. ↩ ↩2

  19. Documents deliberately NOT cited on this page, recorded so that the omissions are not mistaken for absences. ⛔ A single-row container in the attributable set holds 1,142,451 characters — 89.8% of the set’s entire text, and 235 times the next largest sheet. With one row, no sheet inside it can be identified, so no pin into it is possible; it is also the sole source of two vocabulary hits that fall to zero without it. It is excluded from every measurement on this page and nothing cites it. ⛔ A web-encyclopaedia print-out in the production carries a fifth attribution of his engagement, to the Epstein estate. It is not cited: it is a 2022 capture rather than a contemporaneous record, and a sheet-level screen of the document it stands in returns survivors’ vocabulary across much of it. Its identifier is recorded only in the desk report for this page. ⛔ Three sheets in the attributable set carry a bibliography page from a curriculum vitae, one line of which is a 1992 conference-presentation title. NOTHING is taken from those sheets, they are not quoted, pinned or linked, and the three documents that carry them are a copy family whose treatment this page does not compare. ⛔ One document in the set states a length of his tenure as New York City medical examiner. It is press copy in an article adverse to him, it is one of three copies of the same fax, and it is not repeated from this corpus alone; a writer who wants that figure must source it elsewhere. ⛔ Four 1,000-row press-digest containers in the set are not used for anything load-bearing. ⛔ A deposition transcript accounts for 21 of the 158 bare-surname sheets through a court reporter’s certification line. It is a proceeding brought by survivors, it is not cited, quoted or pinned here, and the reporter is not named. ⛔ Two identifiers under standing desk bars, and one topic page under a standing bar, were not approached, opened or queried; they are not in the attributable set. One name under a standing hold was not named, researched or looked up, and no material concerning a cellmate was queried. ↩ ↩2 ↩3

  20. REPORT OF AUTOPSY of the New York City Office of Chief Medical Examiner, Case 19-019432, Date of Autopsy: 08/11/2019, inside a larger production. 84 rows in pages, counted directly; documents.doc_type records this run as court.exhibit_list, which it is not — a documented fact about the production, not about the document. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00130065 p.12 (and pp.11, 17). This page cites page_number 11, 12 and 17 (0-based, as found, located by string); no served page number is asserted and NO MAPPING between the two is derived. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE; documents.pdf_url is empty for this identifier, and a populated pdf_url would not mean fetchable — one returned HTTP 200 with an Access Denied body. [VISION] 0 and appended-transcript markers 0 across all 84 rows, measured with instr(). ⛔⛔ WHY THIS DOCUMENT WAS MISSED, STATED PLAINLY BECAUSE IT IS THE POINT: not one of its 84 sheets carries the subject’s surname. This page was built from the sheets that name him, which is the correct denominator for what sits near a name and the wrong one for whether the record contains a thing. The document was recovered by a later pass that re-ran the question with every name removed from the query. ⚠ The extraction on page_number 17 does not carry the names the quoted lines would otherwise hold. This page supplies none of them, asserts nothing about why, and makes no claim whatever about what the printed sheet carries — that is an image question and no image is openable on this desk. ↩

  21. The Inspector General’s review, its dated chronology. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00039025 p.27 . This page cites page_number 26 (0-based, as found, located by string); the sheet prints its own stamp as EFTA00039051. NO MAPPING between those numbers is derived. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE; documents.pdf_url is empty. Marker-free: instr() for an appended-transcript block returns 0 on this sheet. From this sheet this page takes exactly one sentence: The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, City of New York, releases its findings publicly that the cause of Epstein's death was hanging and that the manner of death was suicide. ⛔⛔ NO DATE IS TAKEN FROM THIS SHEET. In this extraction the chronology’s date column and its entry column are returned as separate runs, so attaching a date to an entry here would be a reconstruction and not a reading. The date on this page comes from a continuous-prose source instead. ⚠ This sentence stands on five documents in this release. Under the desk’s copy rule this page cites ONE, sets no copy beside another, and characterises no difference between them. ↩

  22. A press item preserved in the release, two rows in pages. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00018870 p.2 . This page cites page_number 1 (0-based, as found, located by string). No served page number is asserted and NO MAPPING is derived. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE; marker-free by instr(). From this sheet this page takes exactly one passage, continuous on the sheet: New York's chief medical examiner, Barbara Sampson, ruled Epstein's cause of death a suicide on Aug. 16. The ruling came five days after the medical examiner's office conducted an autopsy. ⚠ It is a press account and is attributed as one; it is used for the DATE, which it carries inside the sentence, and for nothing else. ↩

  23. FBI message-log extract, 22 rows in pages. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA01227736 . This page cites page_number 16 (0-based, as found, located by string); the sheet’s own stamp is EFTA01227752. No served page number is asserted. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. From this sheet this page takes ONE row: the message of 2019 10 30 11-23:51, INBOX, Baden is going to discuss Ns opinion c4 Epstein autopsy on Fox News at 0730. ⛔⛔ NOTHING ELSE on this sheet is reproduced, paraphrased or characterised; the other rows concern unrelated Bureau business and a different matter entirely. ⛔ The producer left the party columns of this log empty and this page does not supply them, state any class or position for them, or say what is covered. ⚠ Ns and c4 are the extraction’s renderings and are not mended; the extraction also renders the time field 11-23:51. On this sheet the log’s date, direction and time fields are printed BEFORE the message body rather than inside it, so the row quoted above is a contiguous run of characters on the sheet apart from a line break. ⚠⚠ The row prints a log time of 11-23:51 and a broadcast time of 0730 in the same line. ⛔ No offset, interval or clock mapping is derived from this and none should be. Block S over all 22 rows: every term 0. [VISION] sheets 0. ↩

  24. Two sheets, each showing the 30 October story circulating inside the Southern District of New York. (1) E-mail from "Margolin, James (USANYS) [Contractor]", Chief Public Information Officer, U.S. Attorney's Office, SDNY, Subject: Pathologist Michael Baden says Jeffrey Epstein was homicide victim, Date: Wed, 30 Oct 2019 12:22:50 +0000, body FYI., one row in pages. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00031392 , page_number 0, 0-based as found, stamp EFTA00031392. From this sheet this page takes the subject line, the date, the one-word body and the three signature lines. ⚠ The sheet also carries a news URL which the extraction has damaged; it is not reproduced. Block S: victim 1 — it is the word homicide victim in the subject line, of Jeffrey Epstein — and every other term 0. (2) A mailbox sheet headed Epstein article., timed 2019/10/30 11:50, carrying a New York Times link, in a 200-row container. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00138065 , page_number 70, 0-based as found. ⚠⚠ FOUR NUMBERS NAME THAT SHEET AND NO MAPPING IS DERIVED: extraction row 70; the sheet’s own printed marking Page 153; its stamp EFTA00138135; and a second production stamp SDNY_00014453. From that sheet this page takes only the heading, the timestamp and the fact of circulation. ⛔⛔ The producer withheld the sender, recipient and date fields of that second message and this page does NOT supply them. Both sheets: TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. Block S on page_number 70: every term 0. ↩

  25. FBI Office of Public Affairs, The Horizon, Wednesday, Oct. 30, 2019, marked UNCLASSIFIED//FOR OFFICIAL USE ONLY, inside a mail forward of Date: Wed, 30 Oct 2019 22:54:15 +0000, 2 rows in pages. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00162722 . page_number 0, 0-based as found. Stamp EFTA00162722. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. From this sheet this page takes the three heading lines, the date line, and ONE bulleted item in full — the one concerning the autopsy, down to OPA declined to comment. ⛔⛔ NOTHING ELSE on this sheet is reproduced, paraphrased, characterised or counted. The remaining items concern unrelated media inquiries, and the three non-autopsy items that a vocabulary screen flags on this sheet — an interagency task force, a consumer fraud interview and a malware inquiry — were each read and none concerns a complainant in this matter. ⛔ The producer withheld the sender and recipients of the forward and this page does not supply them; a Bureau mail handle stands on the sheet and is not reproduced. ⚠ The heading is quoted in the body exactly as the extraction returns it: Jeffreapstein, which reads as Jeffrey Epstein and is NOT mended inside the quotation marks. Block S at the sheet level: victim 1 and traffick 1, both read in context and neither concerning a complainant in this matter; every other term 0. ↩

  26. A legal memoir in the House Oversight production, one row in pages of 3,291 characters, headed with a chapter reference and a word count. https://epstein-data.com/HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_017275 . page_number 0, 0-based as found. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE; the site’s document store is known to refuse HOUSE_OVERSIGHT_* identifiers, so no image route was available even had this pass gone to it. From this sheet this page takes ELEVEN WORDS: one of the world's leading forensic pathologists (and a friend of mine). ⛔⛔ The author is not named on this sheet and this page does not supply a name from context. ⛔⛔ NOTHING ELSE on this sheet is reproduced, paraphrased or characterised. It concerns a 1998 death in Nevada in which the subject consulted; that matter is not this page’s subject, the deceased and the accused in it are not named here, and no finding, conclusion or anatomical detail from it is reproduced. Block S: victim 1 — read in context, it is nineteenth-century murder victims cited as a historical analogy — and every other term 0. ⚠ Tier: a self-published characterisation in a draft manuscript, and the lowest-weight statement on this page. ↩

  27. An unsolicited e-mail from a private member of the public to a Department of Justice mailbox, timed Thursday, October 31, 2019 2:34 AM, under the case-captioned subject line, and a Department of Justice reply forwarding it internally at Date: Thu, 31 Oct 2019 16:10:26 +0000, 2 rows in pages. https://epstein-data.com/EFTA00019687 . page_number 0, 0-based as found. Stamp EFTA00019687. TEXT LAYER ONLY — UNVERIFIED AT THE IMAGE. From this sheet this page takes: the three sentences beginning I, of course, heard Dr. Baden's conclusions today. as far as refusing to take a second look at this case; the two timestamps; and from the covering Department of Justice message the two words lunatic email as the characterisation it applies to what it is forwarding. ⛔⛔ The sender is a private individual with no role in this matter and NO investigative bearing on this subject. She is NOT named here, is not described beyond being a member of the public, and nothing else she wrote is reproduced, paraphrased or characterised — including her remarks about other people, which are not touched. ⛔ No mail address is reproduced. The producer withheld the recipient fields of both messages and this page does not supply them. ➡ This note exists for one reason: read from a snippet in a government mailbox the phrase I have the utmost respect for Dr. Baden looks like institutional endorsement, and it is nothing of the kind. ⛔ Any page citing it as official support would have invented a finding. Block S: every term 0. ↩
