J. Epstein & Company, Inc. was Jeffrey Epstein’s New York investment management firm. It operated from 457 Madison Avenue.2 A Dun & Bradstreet record gives its incorporation as October 18, 1982 in New York;2 a LexisNexis corporate-records extract gives a different date, 11/18/1988, and gives the firm’s status as inactive on a dissolution filing date of April 4, 2001.1 It is the predecessor of the entities that carried his business afterwards, and the firm he named when banks asked him where his money came from.6
What the record of this firm actually is
Almost everything this page reports about the corporation comes from commercial database printouts that JPMorgan Chase pulled while running due diligence on Epstein, and which the bank produced under a request for confidential treatment.1245 They are a Dun & Bradstreet market identifier record, a LexisNexis corporate-records extract, and two LexisNexis civil-suit extracts, each stamped in the bank’s own production series.
This matters for how the page reads them. The LexisNexis corporate extract is not a filing from the New York Department of State. Its first lines say so: “THIS DATA IS FOR INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY. THIS DATA IS NOT AN OFFICIAL RECORD OF THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE OR THE STATE OF NEW YORK.”1 The civil-suit extracts carry the same disclaimer.45 They are a search vendor’s summary of a public register, filed inside a bank’s client file, and nothing here is quoted as though it were the register itself.
Incorporation, name and address
Dun & Bradstreet records the firm at 457 Madison Avenue, New York, gives its year started as 1982 and its incorporation as October 18, 1982 in New York, and classifies it under “Investment Consultants.”2 The address is the Villard Houses, on the corner of Madison Avenue and 50th Street.
The LexisNexis corporate extract gives the company name as J. Epstein & Company, Inc., its type as domestic business, its duration as perpetual, and its county as New York.1 It records a prior name of Jeffrey E. Epstein, Inc.1 Its process address is a law firm rather than the company’s own.1 It gives the date of incorporation/qualification as 11/18/1988.1 That does not agree with the October 18, 1982 incorporation date on the Dun & Bradstreet record.2 Neither extract is a filed corporate instrument, and nothing cited on this page settles which date is right.
Dissolution, and an account that outlived it
The same extract gives the firm’s status as inactive, with the status comment “DISSOLUTION” and a filing date of April 4, 2001.1
A JPMorgan Private Bank statement for the period October 1 to October 31, 2008 is addressed to Epstein Interests, care of J Epstein & Co Inc, at the Villard House, 457 Madison Avenue.3 The account is a JPMorgan Classic Business Checking account.3 Two further statements in the same run carry the same account title.7
The figures on the statement are deliberately not given here. Its summary is a column of counts beside a column of amounts, and in the machine-read text the two interleave, so which amount belongs to which line cannot be settled without reading the page image, which has not been done.3 What the statements establish does not depend on any figure: the corporate name went on titling a bank account for at least seven years after the corporation was dissolved. What the account was for is not stated on any document cited here.
The firm in Epstein’s account of himself
Deutsche Bank’s compliance file reproduces the narrative Epstein gave the bank about where his money came from: that he “began his financial career in the mid 70s as an options trader at Bear Stearns and became a partner in early 80s,” and that “[e]arly thereafter, Epstein founded his own financial management firm, J. Epstein & Co., managing the assets of clients with more than a billion in net worth.”6 A second Deutsche Bank compliance document carries the same account.8
This is Epstein’s self-representation to a bank, recorded by the bank, and it is cited here as that and not as a history of the firm. No document cited on this page independently establishes the Bear Stearns partnership, the founding date implied by “early thereafter,” or the client net-worth threshold.
Two lawsuits
In 1993 the firm was a defendant. Dickerson & Reilly v. Parcor, Inc., J. Epstein & Co., Inc., and Jeffrey E. Epstein was a contract action in the Supreme Court of the State of New York, New York County, index number 1044121993, with a request for judicial intervention dated April 2, 1993 before Justice Ira Gammerman.4 It was disposed of on September 16, 1998.4 The defendants’ attorneys were Wachtel & Masyr.4
In 1995 the firm was a plaintiff, and it sued its own building. J. Epstein & Company, Inc. and Jeffrey Epstein v. 457 Madison Avenue Corp. was a real property action in the same court, index number 1213851995, with a request for judicial intervention dated August 30, 1995 before Justice Louise Gruner Gans.5 It was disposed of on April 24, 1997.5 The plaintiffs’ attorneys were again Wachtel & Masyr.5
Neither extract gives the substance of either case, and no pleading from either is in the released files as cited here.
The name after the company
An internal email chain of October 2013 carries Epstein on its copy line as “Jeffrey Epstein - J. Epstein & Company ([email protected]).”9 A second chain in the same series carries the same form.10 The firm had then been dissolved for twelve years; what the copy line records is the display name attached to his address in a correspondent’s contact list, not a subsisting company.
