Mark Middleton was an Arkansas businessman who worked in Bill Clinton’s White House as a special assistant to the president and as an assistant to the chief of staff, and who in the years afterwards appears intermittently in Jeffrey Epstein’s correspondence. He died in May 2022 in circumstances that an Arkansas sheriff described as a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the chest, with the body suspended from a tree by an extension cord, and that the authorities ruled a suicide.18
This page is built the other way round from most pages on this wiki. The documentary core of his public significance, the White House visitor records, is not in this release, and the desk declined to write him once on that basis. What the release does hold is narrower and is set out below in full: it is a handful of exchanges and one passage of sworn-adjacent testimony. The biographical and death material comes from the public record and is marked as such.
What the release actually holds
Ghislaine Maxwell was asked about him, under a Department of Justice proffer
The strongest release material about Middleton is not a document he wrote. It is an answer Ghislaine Maxwell gave when a Justice Department questioner put his name to her. The transcript exists in the production in three distinct forms across five document numbers; the quotation below is taken from a paginated copy carrying the speaker labels, at printed page 198.3
TODD BLANCHE: Did - someone named Mark Middleton —
GHISLAINE MAXWELL: Yes, I remember him.
TODD BLANCHE: Who was that?
GHISLAINE MAXWELL: He was in the -Mr. Clinton’s administration — President Clinton’s administration, I think.
TODD BLANCHE: And how do you — do you know him?
GHISLAINE MAXWELL: Well, I met him and that is —I met him through Mr. Epstein.
Asked whether Middleton was “a friend or business acquaintance of Mr. Epstein”, she answered: “I mean, I only saw him a handful of times, but I did see him with him. I mean, he seemed friendly. I don’t know if I would characterize — I mean, only having seen him briefly, I don’t know how to characterize that.” Asked whether he flew on Epstein’s aircraft or visited the island, her answer begins “I never I don’t” and completes on the following printed page: “have any recollection of seeing Mark Middleton at the island.”3
What that passage does and does not do. It places the introduction on Epstein’s side, since she says she met Middleton through Epstein rather than the reverse, and it puts her own sight of him at “a handful of times.” It is also a denial of the island. It is testimony, not a record of an event, and the page treats it as what one witness said when asked.
A message from Maxwell to Middleton, 2001
One document in the release is correspondence between the two of them directly. Under the subject “Re: catching up”, a message from an account signing itself “Gx” replies to a message of 24 May 2001: “What have you been reading now. I thought that I had dropped out of sight - at least I have had no reports of any press sightings recently. Plse let me know what you have seen. Regardless, as you know I am a saint and anything you read is rot!”4
This is twelve years earlier than the next exchange on this page, and it is the only document here in which the two correspond.
1 July 2009: a telephone message
Epstein’s assistant Lesley Groff wrote to him under the subject “Mark Middleton”: “Mark Middleton Called to see how you were and would like you to call him if it is possible”. Epstein forwarded the message to a recipient whose address the production bars, at 2:01 the following morning.5
July 2013: a photograph, and a request for contact details
On 18 July 2013 Groff sent Middleton a message under the subject “Photograph from Jeffrey Epstein”, carrying two attachments.9 On 19 July Middleton replied: “Thanks for the photograph. Can you send me Jeffrey’s contact detail, I want to be in touch with him. Thanks. Mark”, over a signature block reading “Mark Middleton” and “Middleton, Inc.”6 On 22 July Groff put the request to Epstein, “Did you want me to give Mark any of your contact info?”, and Epstein answered, in full: “yes”.10
That is the whole of the Epstein correspondence in this release.
The seventeen White House visits, and why this page does not state a number
The figure most often attached to Middleton is that he signed Epstein into the White House seventeen
times. No such figure is supported by anything in this release, and a search that appears to produce
it does not. The string "17 visits" returns eight documents and every one of them is a deposition
transcript in which a numbered line 16 ends and line 17 begins with the word “visits”; the number is an
artefact of how transcripts are typeset.7
The underlying records would be White House visitor logs. They are not in this production. The visitor system’s full name returns nothing, and its acronym returns runs about ocean waves, sound waves, gravitational waves and a day spa.7
⚠ Three documents in the release do carry a sentence saying Epstein “met with President Clinton’s aide Mark Middleton on at least three occasions at the White House.” All three are printouts of the Wikipedia article on Epstein, filed into the production. They are not a record of anything and this page does not rely on them.11
His death
This section rests on the public record. No document in this release concerns it.12
Middleton was found dead on 7 May 2022 at a ranch in Perry County, Arkansas. Perry County Sheriff Scott Montgomery is reported to have said that the death was the result of a self-inflicted shotgun blast to the chest and that the body was hanging from a tree by an extension cord.8 The Encyclopedia of Arkansas records that early reporting said no gun was found at the scene despite the gunshot, and that later accounts said a shotgun was found not far from the body; the coroner’s office noted that Middleton had a history of depression, and the death was ruled a suicide.1
The discrepancy between the early and later accounts of whether a weapon was at the scene is on the public record, and this page states it without resolving it. Nothing read for this page establishes which account is correct, and the question of what the combination of findings means is not one the documents answer.
On 23 May 2022 his widow and his brother Larry Middleton, as representatives of his estate, filed suit in Arkansas to prevent the release of photographs and video from the scene, asserting a privacy interest under the state Freedom of Information Act. The filing says the family had been “harassed by outlandish, hurtful, unsupported, and offensive online articles” and should not have to endure “internet conspiracy theorists.”8
What this page does not establish
- How many times Epstein entered the White House, or on whose signature. The records that would answer it are not in this release, and the figure in circulation is a typesetting artefact.7
- Whether Middleton and Epstein had any relationship beyond the exchanges above. The release holds four episodes across twenty-one years and one witness’s recollection of “a handful of times.”
- Anything about his death. No document read for this page is about it; the account here is the public record’s, attributed.12
- That the man named in two January 6 reports is this man. He is not:
EFTA00149760andEFTA00160882concern a North Texas defendant of the same name.2

Recorded proffer of Ghislaine Maxwell, Thursday 24 July. The passage exists in the production in three distinct transcripts across five document numbers: a 103-sheet transcript at https://epstein-data.com/EFTA02846943 p.51 and https://epstein-data.com/DOJ-OGR-00022656 p.51, carrying the exchange at printed page 198; a 263-sheet transcript at https://epstein-data.com/EFTA02846680 p.199 and https://epstein-data.com/DOJ-OGR-00022393 p.199, carrying the completion of the island answer at printed page 199; and a 6-sheet running transcript at https://epstein-data.com/DOJ-OGR-00022990. The quotation is taken from the paginated, speaker-labelled copies and not from the 6-sheet one, whose first sheet is a single undivided block of about 18,470 characters: a container rather than a page, and not a safe thing to read a quotation from. ⚠ That distinction changed the text. The container row renders the answer as “We saw him a handful of times”; the paginated transcripts render it “I mean, I only saw him a handful of times”, which is a narrower statement, and they also print “Yes, I remember him” and “Who was that?” where the container prints “Yes. I remember him” and “Who’s that?”. The dashes and the run-on
-Mr.are as the paginated sheet prints them and are not repaired. ⚠ The two 103-sheet copies differ from each other at one dash (-Mr.against-- Mr.), so neither extraction is treated as the sheet. UNVERIFIED, from the text layer: none of the five was rendered for this page. ↩ ↩2 ↩3 -

“Family seeks to shield images of Mark Middleton’s death in Perry County”, Arkansas Times, 8 June 2022. Reports the suit filed 23 May 2022 by the widow and brother as representatives of the estate, before Judge Alice Gray, seeking to prevent release of visual depictions from the scene under an Arkansas FOIA privacy interest, and quotes the filing’s language about harassment. It attributes to Perry County Sheriff Scott Montgomery the statements that the death resulted from a self-inflicted shotgun blast to the chest and that the body was hanging from a tree by an extension cord; that attribution is the newspaper’s report of what the sheriff told another outlet, and is given here at that remove.
