Kenneth W. Starr acted for Jeffrey Epstein in 2007-08, and was still corresponding with him in 2019. In December 2018 he discussed with Epstein who should publicly answer the Miami Herald investigation into Epstein’s crimes. No allegation against him was found anywhere in the release, and none is made here. ⚠⚠ A different Kenneth Starr also appears in this corpus and is not this man; the page explains how they were separated.

Kenneth W. Starr is in the released files for twelve years. He joined Epstein’s criminal defence in 2007 while the federal investigation in Florida was live, and he was still writing to Epstein four months before Epstein’s last arrest. The heaviest year is not the defence period. It is 2018.
December 2018: answering the Miami Herald
The Miami Herald published “Perversion of Justice” on 28 November 2018. Twelve days later Epstein sent Starr a link to it.2

What the sheet documents. A response to a newspaper investigation into Epstein’s sex offences was being drafted, with Darren Indyke editing; Starr asked whether Alan Dershowitz should co-author and said he would clear his own participation with his firm; Epstein reported Dershowitz’s view that Martin Weinberg and Jack Goldberger should be added because Starr and Dershowitz were “lightening rods”.

The 2018 year, and why it is the peak
2018 is his heaviest year in the release, and the desk tested whether that was real. Measured against how much the release itself holds for each year, 2018 is his highest rate; the traffic is 97 distinct messages spread across the whole year, not one cluster counted many times.1 It runs on four threads: his memoir Contempt, published 11 September 2018, whose rollout Epstein was advising on from January; Epstein introducing him to Michael Wolff and pressing a meeting with Steve Bannon; the Kavanaugh confirmation; and a joint opinion piece on whether a president can be indicted.3
The two Kenneth Starrs

Epstein separated them himself. On 27 May 2010 he wrote, of the arrest:
another big one in new york with a guy named kenneth starr„ ( not my ken starr )
and, in the same afternoon, “andrew stein and the other ken starr indicted for fraud” and “Kenneth Starr , a different one.”1
The split, measured across the whole surname population: Kenneth W. Starr 1,883 documents;
the business manager 32, all in a single 27-31 May 2010 thread, none written by him and none
recording any transaction with Epstein. ⚠ A trap the desk would otherwise have walked into: the
only literal string Kenneth I. Starr in the entire corpus is not the business manager at all,
but an OCR corruption of a Kenneth W. Starr / Kirkland & Ellis signature block. The middle
initial does not discriminate here.1
What this page does not say
No allegation against him was found anywhere in the release.4
Nothing here says he knew of Epstein’s offences beyond what was public, or that he did anything a defence lawyer may not do. ⚠ Acting for an unpopular client is not misconduct, and the 2007-08 work is the ordinary work of counsel. What the December 2018 exchange documents is different in kind from a retainer: it is a former independent counsel, then out of that case for a decade, weighing publicly defending Epstein against a newspaper investigation, and checking with his firm.
