Eric H. Roth was the president of International Jet Interiors, the Long Island firm that was engaged to refurbish the insides of Jeffrey Epstein’s aircraft. He is one of the plainest correspondents in this record to place, because his signature block gives his name, his title, his company and its street address at Long Island MacArthur Airport, and it is reproduced at the foot of message after message.125 He appears here in two forms. Most of the material is e-mail, the greater part of it written by him. A smaller part is Epstein’s office schedules, where he is an appointment; a schedule entry records what was planned, and this page says so each time one is used.
This page is about a commercial relationship that runs in this record from a 2006 bank entry to a June 2019 appointment, and that in its later years stopped being only commercial.1711 Nothing here is a finding of wrongdoing. Roth is not charged, named as a defendant or named as a witness in any document cited on this page.
What the relationship was
The work was aircraft interiors: foam, leather, wool carpet, veneer, window shades, galley counters, lavatory fittings, seat certification.1422 The paperwork is explicit about it, because Roth wrote in specification language and priced line by line.2324
Its earliest dated appearance is not Epstein writing to Roth but the chief pilot of Epstein’s flight department, Larry Visoski, reporting to Epstein on September 23, 2009, under the forwarded subject line “Fwd: FW: Air Ghislaine Headset Hooks”: “Jeffrey, I have several meetings in NY next week with Sikorsky and Eric Roth, I will visit the S76C++ in Pennsylvania on Wednesday, then four of Sikorksy’s engineers are meeting me at Eric’s shop in Islip on Thursday to discuss our interior completion.”8 Two weeks earlier a message in the same project had gone out under the subject “Seating Foam for S76C++ Air Ghislaine”.9 Air Ghislaine, Inc. is one of the companies J.P. Morgan’s private bank listed against Epstein as decision maker in its own due diligence records.25
Through the autumn of 2009 and into 2010 Roth’s messages to Epstein are about that helicopter, and his own subject lines are the shortest description of them: “S76 with Rolls Royce Influence”, “RE: FW: Headset hook positions”, “Vibration Tetsing”, “The fwd divan”, “S76 headrests”.26 By mid-2011 the subject had changed to a fixed-wing aeroplane. On June 27, 2011 Roth opened with a disclaimer, “I need to start off by stating that it is not my intent to go around Shawn Lancaster on this -”, and then reported:
I called a close friend of mine inquiring about the GV market and aircraft that are “not published”.
Epstein had asked him three days earlier for “eric„ price for a rc-rag , new scats , g-v , paint and interior, plus approx time after choosing fabrics etc.”12 A month later he sent a formal letter, whose opening line the extraction prints as:
The =ttached letter identifies budgetary costs to refurbish a =#8220;general” GIVsp.
The = characters are the extraction’s: the first stands where a letter has been dropped, and the second where the ampersand introducing an HTML entity for an opening quotation mark has been lost.27 He set out why the choice of airframe mattered to the price: floor plan changes on a Gulfstream IVSP fall under a less demanding certification standard than on a Gulfstream V.27
The Gulfstream IV, and a proposal with a number on it
On March 8, 2013 a J.P. Morgan funds transfer request for $350,000.00 was drawn on an account titled “Jeffrey E. Epstein” in favour of an aircraft title and escrow company in Laredo, Texas. Its payment detail reads: “Purchase and Sale of 1988 Gulfstream G-IV Aircraft, Serial No. 1085, U.S, Registration No, N423TT”.13
Five weeks later, on April 13, 2013, Roth issued a thirteen-page proposal on International Jet letterhead. It is addressed to “Mr. Larry Visosky” at JEGE, LLC, numbered Proposal ER013007, and captioned for the Gulfstream IV serial 1085, registration N423TT. Its covering letter begins: “The enclosed proposal reflects the various conversations and correspondence with both you and Jeffrey.” Of Epstein’s taste it reports:
In Jeffrey’s last e-mail he described the wood as “bland and somewhat vulgar”.
The pitch ends: “We look forward to being of service to you by providing extraordinary personal service and quality workmanship at an exceptional value.” One further line offering to take questions, and the signature, follow it on the sheet.14 The body specifies work cockpit by cabin by lavatory, including fire-blocking of the belted cushions to a named Federal Aviation Regulation and engineering approval by an FAA Designated Engineering Representative.22 Against the line “Refurbishment cost as outlined within:” it prints ”$ 336,820”, over a signature space for JEGE, LLC, with five priced options beneath it.23 The general conditions open: “These specifications are for the anticipated work to be performed in the refurbishment of an executive interior of a Gulfstream IV aircraft.”28
The record does not contain a countersigned copy. What it does contain is money moving on that airframe. A funds transfer request effective July 3, 2013 sends $65,000.00 to International Jet Interiors Inc. under the payment detail “JEGE LLC: GIV Serial #: 1085 - additional deposit to 50%”.4
Payments to the company predate all of this. Epstein’s J.P. Morgan private bank statements record a wire of 102,190.03 dollars on October 5, 2006 referenced “REF: INVOICE NO 1761 PROJECT 06246”; one of 169,960.00 dollars on February 20, 2007; and one of $40,110.00 on July 25, 2007 referenced “REF: INVOICE 1927 FINAL PAYMENT”. The extraction prints the first two figures with a capital S in place of the dollar sign and they are not given one here.171819 Eleven years later a Deutsche Bank business checking statement in the name of Plan D, LLC records an outgoing transfer of $100,000.00 on April 25, 2018 to International Jet Interiors Inc.20
Islip
Roth’s shop was at Long Island MacArthur Airport, in the town of Islip, and the pattern in Epstein’s office schedules is Epstein going there. These are schedule entries: each records what the office planned. A sheet for April 2017 plans “10:00am JOJO to drive JE to meet with Eric Roth in Islip to discuss interior fabrics again” for Saturday April 15.29 Another for the end of that month carries, under Sunday April 30, “Meet w/Eric Roth to discuss interior material selection”.30 A May 2017 sheet plans a Paris departure and then “6:10pm Arrive NY (Islip-Meet with Eric Roth upon arrival)”.31 A September 2017 sheet plans a Paris departure and “9:00am Meet with Eric Roth” on arrival at Islip.32
One of these can be followed all the way through, and it is worth following because it shows what a schedule line stood for. A sheet for June 2017 plans, under “Sat June 3, 2017 PB”, the line “8:30am Meet w/Eric Roth’s Team at Islip”.21 The day before, Roth wrote to Epstein: “Jay and the team look forward to seeing you tomorrow morning around 8:30am to finalize the foam so that we can move forward on the seating.”33 Earlier in the same exchange he had written, “Since I am going to be at your place today, you should go to my place today!”34 On the evening of June 3 he wrote: “Glad to hear that all went well this morning and that you were happy!”35 So the plan was made and something happened on the morning it was made for. ⚠ But that last message is second-hand: Roth is relaying what he was told, he had written the day before that “Jay and the team” would be the ones there, and nothing cited here places Roth himself in the room. It is closer to an attendance than a booking, and it is not a record of who attended.
Two copies of the February 2018 schedule disagree about the same meeting. One prints, under “Sat. Feb. 17, 2018 NY-Bedford-PB”, the line “8:00am Appt w/Eric Roth in !slit,” where the extraction has mangled the place name; another prints “8:30am Appt w/Eric Roth in Islip”.3637 Roth’s own message of February 8 had asked for “Saturday morning the 17th. — Preferably at 8:00am.”38
Plan D, LLC and the G550
From 2017 the work was on a Gulfstream G550, serial 5173, and the client of record was Plan D, LLC. On New Year’s Day 2018 Roth wrote from India under the subject “G550 Plan D LLC”: “I leave Mumbai tomorrow and will be back in the office on Wednesday.”7 Epstein’s message in the same thread reads, in full, “hope all well. / time to focus on divan. ?”7
The scale of the open work is on the face of Roth’s own lists. On April 21, 2018 he sent an itemised estimate headed “Plan D, LLC”, which opens:
Many of the items below require your d=finition / confirmation. We have done our best to provide a financia= “feel” for these items.
The = signs are the extraction’s, standing where a letter has been dropped.15 Among the twenty-seven items, printed with the extraction’s stray markup: “9. = New carpet - $39,800</=:p>” and “22. Replace cabin upwash / down=ash lights with new LED lighting $46,700”.24 In November 2018 he consolidated the outstanding items again, writing: “In order to properly schedule and for everyone to be on the same page, below is the consolidated list of items that we have discussed.”39 That message links a three-dimensional interior walkthrough of the aircraft; the link is not reproduced here.
The work ran on schedule pressure. In September 2017 Roth and Massar were working out what could be finished before a departure date, and the sheet reads: “The yellow highlighted items can be accomplished prior to your departure on September 29th.” Roth added: “Obviously we are doing our best to accommodate you and we are moving other clients around.”40 In January 2019 he was still tracking fabric through flame treatment and fire-block testing: “We received confirmation that the divan fabric is expected to ship to us for receipt by January 30th.”41
Two Boeing Business Jets
Twice Roth was brought in on a Boeing Business Jet, and neither appears in the documents cited here as work he went on to do. In January 2015, on a thread headed “Re: BBJ”, he replied to Epstein with a question rather than an answer: “Are you informing me; asking me my advice; give me a little more of what your thoughts are here…”42
In October 2016 Visoski wrote to him: “Jeffrey would like to meet with you Monday / tomorrow at Sam at his home.” The word “Sam” is the extraction’s rendering of the subject line’s “8am”, and the address is given in the next line as Epstein’s East 71st Street house. Visoski signed off: “Exciting road ahead,. With BBJ in sight,”43 Lesley Groff circulated the confirmation the same evening, writing “Eric Roth is confirmed to come see you tomorrow at 8am.” with the schedule line “8:00am Appt w/Eric Roth” beneath it.44 Over the following fortnight Roth was pricing window shade replacement and taking direction on palette, replying to a grey-and-cashmere instruction from Epstein: “Very couture, modem, stylish. Hermes has a beautiful grey palate like this.”45 He was doing it from a trade show: “I am Florida at the NBAA annual convention this week.”46
In September 2018 a third airframe was put to him, and he answered with a figure in the millions. Asked for a rough number on refurbishing an existing Boeing Business Jet interior, he wrote that the client would never be satisfied with a straight recover, “The reality is you will never want to =ust simply recover what is there.”, and put the cost “somewhere between $3.75M to $5.0M.” The = is the extraction’s.16
What the relationship became
By the second half of the decade the correspondence is no longer only about aircraft.
In October 2009 Roth asked Epstein to help a young man he was close to get into Harvard. “I am not sure what the next step is and if you would be so kind, where do you feel that you may be of assistance / influence?” he wrote, and added: “Max is like a son to me.”47 Epstein had replied earlier that evening, of the same young man, that “he is remarkable„ the essay and interview, will be decisive”.48 The young man’s surname is on the sheet and is not reproduced here. The record does not show what, if anything, Epstein then did.
In April 2014 Roth wrote to Epstein about his own daughter’s choice of university, setting out a comparison of two programmes and closing: “I know that you are not a College Advisor, but your thoughts, guidance and opinion would very much be appreciated.”49 Her first name is on the sheet and is not reproduced here.
In May 2013 the traffic ran the other way. Epstein wrote to Debra Black, copying Roth, “dcbra , cric is copied on this maill he is the guy to re do the g5”, and Roth followed up the next afternoon: “I appreciate Jeffrey’s introduction and would like to send you a portfolio on our company.”5051 Debra Black appears elsewhere in this record beside Leon Black.
In September 2018 Roth thanked Epstein’s office for the use of an apartment. The sheet does not name the building or its address, and none is supplied here. He had just moved his daughter out of it, he wrote, and went on: “Thank you so much for helping us as a one months rental is impossible.” Epstein replied: “im glad it worked out.”52 Her first name is on that sheet too and is not repeated.
In November 2018 Epstein’s office asked Roth to specify an Apple Watch that Epstein wished to buy him for the holidays. Roth answered: “This holiday gift is very thoughtful of Jeffrey…Thank you!”, gave the size, case and band, and gave his business address for delivery.53 A list headed “2018 Apple Watch List” carries “-Eric Roth-DONE” among more than thirty other names, and further into the same document the line “21.Eric Roth-M2842672831-$622.43-” with his specification beneath it.5455 This is a list, not an event: it records what the office recorded.
In February 2019 Epstein introduced Roth to a contact in Marrakesh for a family holiday. Roth wrote to the contact: “We (Myself, my wife, my oldest daughter and her boyfriend) are going to visit our daughter who is currently studying abroad in Barcelona.” He went on to report that when he had asked Epstein about safety, sightseeing, hotels and restaurants, Epstein had named Mark Lloyd as, in Roth’s rendering, “the guy” for all things Marrakesh.56 Epstein’s own message to Roth had read, among restaurant recommendations, “my friend mark lloyd will help you around.”57
June 2019
The last dated engagement in this record is a month before Epstein’s arrest.
On June 10, 2019 Visoski arranged a Sikorsky S-76D demonstration flight for Wednesday June 12 from the East 34th Street heli pad in Manhattan to Hawthorne Aviation at Islip, with Epstein as lead passenger. Of what would follow the landing he wrote: “He’ll meet with Eric Roth approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, and return to NYC at approximately 1:30pm to 2pm ish”.10 The schedule sheet for that day, from Lesley Groff, plans the demonstration flight and the line “11:30am Arrive Islip and meet with Eric Roth”.11 That is a plan; this record does not show whether the meeting took place. Earlier in the year Roth had been circulating photographs of an S-76D interior, on a thread where Visoski observed: “Nobody is using Sheep Skin for the pilot seats, most are fabric or Leather,”58
Three weeks earlier, on May 17, 2019, Epstein’s office had set up a three o’clock conference call with Roth, Massar and McDowell; Roth replied with the number to reach him on.59 The office schedule for that week plans “1:00pm Appt w/Eric Roth” for May 7 and “3:00pm Conf. Call with Eileen, Jay and Eric Roth” for May 17.6061
What the documents cited here do not show
- No engagement with Epstein’s conduct. Nothing in the correspondence read for this page touches the allegations against Epstein, his 2008 plea, his registration obligations or his 2019 arrest. The subject matter is aircraft interiors, schedules, invoices and, latterly, favours.
- No countersigned contract. The April 2013 proposal prints a signature space for JEGE, LLC and the copy in this record is not signed. That work was paid for is shown by the wires; the instrument that authorised it is not in hand.
- No completion record. For the Gulfstream IV, the G550 and both Boeing Business Jets, the documents cited here are proposals, estimates, open-item lists and schedule pressure. None is a delivery certificate, a final invoice or a closing statement. Two of the 2006 and 2007 bank entries carry the words “FINAL PAYMENT” against an invoice number, which is the only thing on this page that speaks to a job being closed out, and neither names an airframe.
- No acquisition record for either Boeing Business Jet. Roth priced work on two of them. Nothing cited here shows whether Epstein or any of his companies bought either, and the absence of such a document on this page is not evidence that he did not.
- No total. Five payments to International Jet Interiors Inc. are named above because each is printed on a bank record in this set. They are not a total of what Epstein’s entities paid the company, and nothing here supports one.
- No travel. Roth does not appear as a passenger on any flight record read for this page.
- No answer on Harvard. The record shows the request and Epstein’s assessment of the applicant. It does not show any approach to the university, any intervention, or any outcome.
- No evidence about the apartment’s terms. The correspondence shows the use of an apartment and thanks for it. It does not show a lease, a rent, a waiver or who authorised it.
- Whether the June 12, 2019 meeting happened. The flight was arranged and the day was scheduled. Nothing read here reports back on it.
Values withheld
Contact details for non-survivors are ordinarily publishable at this desk. Several classes are nonetheless withheld on this page. Telephone and mobile numbers printed in signature blocks and schedule lines are not reproduced. A bank account number for the company is not reproduced. A numeric access credential of the kind a producer might have covered and did not is not reproduced, and nothing here indicates where it stands. The unit designation of the apartment is not reproduced. A three-dimensional walkthrough link to the interior of the aircraft is not reproduced. The surname of the Harvard applicant, and the first name of Roth’s daughter, are on the sheets cited and are withheld here; so is the passenger list of the June 2019 demonstration flight beyond Epstein himself. Where a producer has covered a value, nothing on this page reaches it and no other copy has been used to complete one.
