John Caudwell (born October 7, 1952) is a British businessman who built the mobile telephone retailer Phones 4u and sold the Caudwell Group in 2006, and who has since concentrated on philanthropy.12 The High Court recorded the sale price as “around £1.5 billion”; a 2012 email in the released files gives £1.46 billion.25 He appears in documents released by the Department of Justice chiefly because a proposal was attributed to him in two emails sent to Jeffrey Epstein by other people in 2009: that Caudwell would pay Sarah, Duchess of York £10 million towards her debts in return for half her profits for life.67 Neither email was written by Caudwell.67 A spokesman for Caudwell said in February 2026 that Caudwell “has never met or had any association or correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein,” that he had not known the Duchess was consulting Epstein about the proposal, and that he did not proceed with the transaction.89 No document cited on this page is correspondence between Caudwell and Epstein; in every one of them he is discussed by other people.67105

Background

Caudwell developed and then sold the mobile telephone retailer Phones 4u; the High Court recorded in 2018 that he sold it “for around £1.5 billion” and that “[s]ince 2006, when Phones 4U was sold, Mr. Caudwell has focussed on charitable and philanthropic activities, but he has retained interests in various businesses, including Signia.”2 He established the charity Caudwell Children in 2000.1

One of those retained interests was Signia Wealth Limited, a London wealth-management firm incorporated on October 15, 2009 as True Wealth Limited and renamed five days later.311 The venture was put to Caudwell in 2009 by a private banker who had managed part of his assets at Coutts and who became the new company’s chief executive; Caudwell was to supply assets for it to manage and to fund its early costs.12 Its equity was owned 51 per cent by Caudwell and 49 per cent by the chief executive, though Caudwell preferred to fund the company by loans rather than equity.4 These facts were recorded by the High Court in litigation between the company and its former chief executive, decided in May 2018.3

The 2009 proposal attributed to Caudwell

On July 13, 2009 an email reached Epstein’s Gmail account from a sender given in the header as “Sarah.” It introduced Caudwell to Epstein, described his wealth from Phones 4u, and reported, in two separate sentences, that he had decided he would like to give the sender £10 million, but for that wanted “50% of my net profits for life,” and that the sender’s debts stood at approximately £6 million; it then asked Epstein’s opinion. The email itself does not say the £10 million was to pay the £6 million in debts; that framing appears only in the November 6 email below.6

Epstein replied at 3:14 pm Eastern the same day: “have him put the deal in writing.”13

On the afternoon of November 6, 2009 Epstein wrote, “fergie will be in in an hour.”7 Half an hour later a reply reached him, from a sender whose name is redacted on the page, setting out two courses for her: bankruptcy, or a deal with Caudwell described as wanting “50% of her life earnings going forward for 10m, meaning paying off her debt,” a proposal the writer flagged with its own caveat: “this offer needs to be verified if its real!”7

The two accounts of the proposal differ: the July email describes a share of “net profits,” the November email a share of “life earnings.”67

After the emails were reported in February 2026, a spokesman for Caudwell said that he and the Duchess were long-standing acquaintances who had met through his support for her charity work, that she later approached him about a transaction to help clear her debt, and that:89

To be absolutely clear, until now, John Caudwell was unaware that Sarah Ferguson was consulting Jeffrey Epstein or anyone else on this matter. John Caudwell has never met or had any association or correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein. John Caudwell ultimately decided not to go through with the business transaction at the time.

The statement says Caudwell did not proceed with the transaction. It does not address the terms attributed to him in the two emails.8967

A newspaper article sent to Epstein, 2010

On November 27, 2010 David Stern emailed Epstein a Daily Mail article by Richard Kay and Geoffrey Levy about the Duchess of York’s settlement offer to her creditors.10 The article named Caudwell among friends who “continue to ride to her rescue,” describing him as “the mobile phone tycoon and one of Britain’s richest men.”10

Signia Wealth in Epstein’s correspondence, 2012

On June 9, 2012 Stern emailed Epstein a link to Signia Wealth’s website, describing the firm as a “Wealth Management boutique set up by Caudwell who sold his mobile phone retail chain for £1.46 billion in cash in 2006.”5
