⚠ what this page is about, and what it is not

A financier and philanthropist who corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein from 2008 to 2013, and who forwarded him the internal reports of a scholar-rescue charity he chaired. The charity’s own covering letter restricted those reports to its committee and the institute’s leadership. No allegation against him was found anywhere in the release, and none is made here. ⚠ A second Jarecki in the release is a different person and is his son.

In the released files Henry Jarecki appears as a correspondent of Jeffrey Epstein’s across five and a half years, as the person who kept Epstein supplied with the internal paperwork of a charity that rescues academics from countries where their work has put them in danger, and, seven years before any of that, as a name on two travel invoices charged to Epstein’s agency account.

The Scholar Rescue Fund reports

The Institute of International Education runs a Scholar Rescue Fund, and within it an Iraq project for academics under threat. On 25 January 2012 the project circulated its Fall 2011 activities report to its committee. The covering letter is explicit about who may read it:

We hope that the information in this report is of interest to you; please note that these quarterly SRF activities reports (both the Iraq and Global reports) contain confidential grantee and program information which is intended for IIE’s Scholar Rescue Fund Committee Members and the IIE Leadership only. If you would like to share some of this information with associates outside of IIE and SRF, please contact the SRF staff and we will provide you with an executive summary of this report that is suitable for distribution to external contacts.

The next evening Jarecki forwarded it to Jeffrey Epstein, above his own note:

Dear Jeffrey:

I know these reports interest you and that you appreciate my regularly keeping you in touch.

And where have you disappeared to?

⚠⚠ THE SENTENCE THAT MATTERS IS “REGULARLY”. The forward is not presented as an exception; it is presented as a standing arrangement between the two men. ⚠ What the sheet does not say is whether Epstein was ever offered the executive summary the covering letter describes, or whether anyone at the institute knew.4

⚠ The report itself is not in the release. The e-mail is; its attachment is not, so nothing about any individual scholar is in this corpus by way of this document, and nothing of the kind is reproduced here.4

This was not the only such forward. Jarecki and "Scholar Rescue" co-occur in 36 documents, and the fund is named in 83.4

The correspondence

323 messages across 293 documents, from 21 January 2008 to 26 June 2013, heaviest in 2010. Much of it is ordinary: forwarded press about himself, institutional material from the institute, and in October 2009, refusing Epstein a photograph a third party wanted for a brochure, “Sorry. You cant have one, much though you may beg.”5

⚠⚠ ONE EXCHANGE IS NOT ORDINARY, AND THE PAGE STATES WHAT IT IS AND STOPS. On 12 September 2009, at 15:00, Epstein sent him the text of a judicial opinion. The passage is from a tax appeal about whether money and property a woman received from a man were gifts or taxable income, and the part Epstein sent is the separate opinion, which argues against a rule that would “tax only the most base type of cash-for-sex exchange and categorically exempt from tax liability all other transfers of money and property to so-called mistresses or companions”, and against treating payments as gifts “as long as the relationship consists of something more than specific payments for specific sessions of sex.” Two hours and sixteen minutes later Jarecki replied, in full: “should I pass this to wilens?” Epstein’s answer was “your call„ its just funny”.5

⚠ What the sheet establishes is the sending, the reply and the timing. It does not say why Epstein sent it, what either man understood by it, or who “wilens” is, and this page asserts none of those. ⚠ Epstein had pleaded guilty in Florida in June 2008; the page records that the exchange post-dates it and draws no further connection.5

What the counts are, and the trap in them

A count this size has been an artefact three times on this wiki, so it was measured first.2

  • 678 pages across 643 documents, 1.05 pages per document. Not a running head and not a photographed book. The corpus types 595 of them as e-mail header pages.
  • ⚠⚠ THE SURNAME IS TWO MEN, AND THE OLDER DATES BELONG TO THE SON. Counting the surname alone gives a correspondence beginning in 2003. Henry Jarecki’s own messages begin in 2008. The 2003 to 2012 traffic under the surname is Nicholas Jarecki, a film director, with 177 rows across 130 documents. A page written from the surname figure would have given this subject five extra years he had nothing to do with.2

What this page does not say

No allegation against him was found anywhere in the release.6

Nothing here says Epstein funded the Scholar Rescue Fund, or that he sat on any of its bodies, or that he asked for the reports. ⚠ The documents show one man sending and describing a habit of sending. They do not show what the other did with them.

⚠ Nor does this page treat the forward as unlawful. It was a charity’s internal report, not a government one, and the covering letter states a policy rather than an obligation. What it documents is a confidence, extended by the person who chaired the committee it belonged to.
