To: Will Ford Bcc: From: Jenny Rogers Sent: Tue 2/17/2015 7:45:22 PM Subject: Sitka, Alaska We've had several people ask about activities to enjoy while in Sitka. Below is a brief list of some ideas: Fishing - Great halibut and salmon fishing exists in Sitka! There are many many charter options available in Sitka. I don't have a lead on who is best, but yelp/tripadvisor can help with recommendations. If you are interested in fishing, please book soon as many charters are already at capacity for the summer! Hiking - Harbor Mountain Trail is a great start for hiking in Sitka! One of my favorite hikes in town, when my family lived in Sitka we would do this hike often. There are tons of other trails to hike on the island as well, Mt. Verstovia Trail and Gavin Hill Trail are other popular hikes. Float Plane tours and Glacier tours - Float plane tours range from 40 minutes to 3 hours. and can accommodate a short flight just around Baranof Island (the Russian name for Sitka), or 3 hours of a tour of entire Southeast Alaska. Also there are several bike and kayak rental locations exist throughout the island. Sitka has tremendous history, with a beautiful blend of Russian and Tlinglit (pronounced KLINKIT) influences. Throughout town you can visit churches, tribal houses, totem pole parks, museums, and historical monuments that share and outline these influences. www.sitka.orq is a good place to start for more information on historical adventures in Sitka. Sitka also has some hidden treasures from its involvement in World War II (a Naval air base was opened on Japonski island, the small island next to Sitka - you can drive across a bridge to get there). There are hidden WWII bunkers throughout the island... Will and I took a short walk to a few bunkers last fall, happy to share how to get there for whoever is interested! The Sitka Music Festival will be going on June 5-28, you can visit www.sitkamusicfestival.orq for more details. This festival brin
