Riley began his professional investigative experience in 1966 when he joined the City of Miami Police Department. He spent eight years working undercover investigating drug smuggling and money laundering cases throughout the United States, Central and South America. In 1968 he was named Officer of the Year and awarded a Gold Medal for Valor, the. department's highest honor, for his undercover work as a Special Investigator for three Dade County Grand Juries, in Mexico and South America.
