Mine had ugly cancerous growth on first half, but not bad kind of cancer. 3. Thyroid surgery does not necessarily remove all the thyroid tissue... there are always some fragments left. 4. It is good to get rid of all of it, since fragments may contain cancerous tissues. 5. Turns out, thyroid is the only tissue in the body that has an affinity for iodine. 6. The endocrinologist plans the dose, and then you go to the hospital nuclear medicine department and take a radioactive iodine pill that comes in a lead box. 7. You are in isolation for three days... can't be in the same room with anyone else. No sex. 8. The radioactivity in the Iodine kills all the thyroid tissue in your body and there is never any more problem. 9. Several friends have been through this, some many years ago. 10. There are additional details in preparation, like salt free diet for week or so, but basically, that's the story. I I.
