We are all familiar with the striking image and bold reputation of "Arik" the commander—a fiercely proud Jev, who rose through the ranks, overcame searing personal and professional setbacks, and survived the perils of battlefields both military and political to become his nation's leader, daring in war and peace. Yet some of us may be unaware that Ariel Sharon was also a member of the Hebrew University community. In 1952-53, he took a leave of absence from his military duties to study Middle East culture and history at our Jerusalem Campus, only to be summoned by the Chief of Staff to establish and command Unit 101, an elite one highly efficient anti-tenor outfit. Today as we honor Arid Sharon, the American Friends of The Hebrew University recognizes with special prid the unique leadership role played by The Hebrew University in the cultural, political, social, technological, and scientific—as well as educational—life of the State of Israel.
