From: Nathan Myhrvold • To: jeffrey E. <[email protected]> Subject: RE: Re: Date: Tue, 24 Jun 2014 22:40:33 +0000 OK, so this is complicated.... It is easy to print fantastic quality photos that are 4 feet and as long as you want (up to 100 feet, but I generally do 12-16 feet). You saw murals like that at my office. This uses an Epson wide bed inkjet printer. I have one like this (and we could print for you) but shipping the photo without creases is hard so best to have it done locally. With a bit more trouble you can print 60" wide (5 feet). There are similar inkjet printers that can do this. Mounting prints this size is a real problem. There are a couple approaches and you will have to look to find somebody who can do it. Going wider (i.e. taller when mounted sideways) than 48" or 60" is a problem. One approach is to print multiple swaths that are say 48" high. three of those get you 12 feet. The trick is mounting them so the seams between the paper pieces don't show. This can be done reasonably well, but not perfectly. Another approach is to go to a company that prints billboards. They can easily do it — it will be multiple swaths from an inkjet printer. The difference is that the high quality photo inkjet printers that I am talking about above have very fine resolution (1440 dots per inch). Billboard printers are not as good because you can't get very close to them. All of that is about mounting on paper — high quality, but still paper. For my photo show (I am in San Jose, our show opens at a museum here — there is a party tonight), we use a special printer in CA who makes the prints directly on aluminum. It looks fantastic, is easy to mount and is way more resilient. They made some big prints for us but as big as you are talking about. I bet you can get 4 feet by 12 feet maybe bigger. You could take several of these and mount them together carefully so the seams don't show. Nathan From: jeffrey E. [mailto:[email protected]] Sent
