The structures have no walls, therefore the panels are somewhat exposed to the worst of the elements. The pigments are natural earth pigments which can be sealed with an acrylic matte sealer. For long term preservation the back side of the stripped and flattened frond should probably be treated with an insecticide and/or a sealer for strength. (They will be fumigated before they leave New Guinea.) In the Washkuk, panels are sewn together as they are never perfectly flat or the same size, nor do they have nails.
