I have a POC in the Nashville area that is a retired LA County Sheriff's Deputy. He spent several years as a homicide detective and worked a few cases that involved inmates hanging themselves with bedding. He said that one piece of evidence that they found helpful was examining the fibers of the bedding under a high powered microscope. He said that if the fibers were all laying the same direction, the most probable explanation was suicide b/c the sheet only moved one direction over whatever object provided the anchored point. If the sheet fibers were laying both directions, it was more likely that a 30d party was involved in some way b/c the sheet would have been pulled over the anchor point by someone else and then shifted forward from the weight of the individual. Full disclosure — I have no clue if this is helpful or not. Although I spent my first 12 years on VCMO squad, I have never processed a homicide scene. If this is a waste of your time, very sorry. If this is something you think is worth discussing more, reach out to me and I will provide you with a name and number and you can go direct with the source.
