Morgan, Ph.D., and Alexandra Thompson, BIS Statisticians F rom 2019 to 2020, the total violent victimization rate declined 22%, from 21.0 to 16.4 victimization per 1,000 persons age 12 or older (figure 1). Violent victimization indudes rape or sexual assault, robbery, aggravated assault, and simple assault. Based on data from the National Crime Victimization Survey (NCVS), the decrease in violent victimization was driven primarily by a decline in assault. The rate of simple assault declined from 13.7 per 1,000 in 2019 to 10.7 per 1,000 in 2020, and the rate of aggravated assault declined from 3.7 to 2.9 per 1,000. The decline in aggravated assault drove the decrease in violent crime, excluding simple assault, from 2019 (7.3 per 1,000) to 2020 (5.6 per 1,000).
